‘Men of Faith and Learning’

Monday 5 July 1875. There they stood alongside their parents; hope-filled, nervous, excited, a little bemused. They were greeted warmly by Br Joseph Barrett, Br Stanislaus Nunan and Br Brendan Nugent. Their names were etched in history. Day one of St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace had begun. The sparks of 26 young men were lit. These 26 young men, who stood alongside their parents on the doorstep of the old Cathedral of St Stephen became the first Gentlemen of Terrace, ‘men of faith and learning’.

Tomorrow, we will gather on the very same steps to farewell our most recent graduating ‘men of faith and learning’, our Senior Class of 2017. We will farewell 236 Gentlemen of Terrace who have proudly worn the ‘Red and Black’. They have enthusiastically and sincerely enacted their role as Senior leaders. They have humbly enacted a spirit of service to others, aspiring to personal excellence in all that they have achieved. They have been blessed with a Terrace education that allows them to be the best they can be, an education where their hearts and minds are liberated, an education that has empowered them to make a difference to our world.

As soon to be Gregory Terrace Old Boys, they are about to join the light of the 18 000 ‘men of faith and learning’ who have gone before. They will take with them the gifts of love, patience, kindness, joy, faithfulness, gentleness, peace, understanding and wisdom. It’s with these gifts that they will hope to light a spark in others, leading and inviting them to join us in being bright lights for our world.
