Director of Sport | Mr Tony McGahan

Term 4 Sport

Term 4 was a busy and action-packed period for Term 4 sport, from our GPS Track and Field Championship to the preseason programs for Term 1 2022. This summary outlines what has been happening and what awaits over the December/January period.

Track and Field

The annual GPS Track and Field Championship was held at QSAC in Week 2. Track and Field isn’t the easiest sport to coordinate or coach, being the final GPS competition in an enormously busy year. Both Coordinator Mr Anthony Hayward and Head Coach Mr Werner Botha have done a fabulous job this season. You don’t always get validation for the work you have put into a project, but the efforts for the season were rewarded with the Senior Squad finishing in sixth place, the best result in eight years. The Junior Squad achieved their best outcome for the last decade, in third place.

Congratulations to all competitors for your effort and the collective display of support for each other that was evident throughout the day. Special mention goes to Track and Field Captain Griffin Kelly (First 1500m and second 3000m Open), Vice Captain Oliver Casey-Ryan (First 400m Open), and Lachlan Kennedy (Second 100m and 200m Open). These young men ran brilliantly in their respective races, and it was inspirational for the Terrace supporters to watch.

Cricket

The theme for the Term 4 Terrace Cricket program is Learning and Developing the Basics. With over 270 students actively involved in the program, our fantastic coaches are working hard, providing energy and effort into shaping the Terrace Cricketers. Each area of the game has specialist coaches teaching the best practice for that skill, providing the best possible chance for individual and team success for the upcoming 2022 GPS season.

Preseason Cricket continues to provide excellent match play opportunities, from the annual Powder Finger Cup, which the College defended for a record fifth consecutive time, to the inaugural St Joseph’s College Cup. The Beginning of the Baggy Black program was also a huge success, with over 135 boys participating, giving them the opportunity to meet new friends. The Specialist Clinics, High-Performance Camps and Christian Brothers’ Cricket week will keep the boys busy during the summer.

Rowing

The Rowing preseason program has started well, with all age groups recently trialling to give a snapshot of the shed’s ability. These crews remained the same for the BBC / BGS time trial hosted at Tennyson last Saturday. This competition is a great way to sign off on the Term 4 training, leading into holiday clinics and camps for several invited crews. The standard of several age groups has been impressive to date - through their commitment, attitude, as well as general ability in day-to-day training. I know all Seniors, Captain of Boats Bayley Clarke, and Vice Captains Angus Munn and Sam Allen are excited by the challenge ahead.

Swimming

Terrace Swimming has made a determined and successful start to the 2022 season, with great numbers of students consistently in the pool preparing for 2022. Continuing with our efforts through the Christmas holidays is imperative to our success in the new year. Training times over the Christmas holiday period are as follows:

Congratulations to our Swimming Captains for the 2022 GPS Swimming season, Captain Felix Wilson and Vice Captains William Voltz and Ziggy Bickle. We wish them the very best for their final year representing Terrace Swimming in 2022.

The Terrace Swimming Support Group does an outstanding job supporting our swimmers to achieve their goals each season. Each Friday morning, the SSG prepares breakfast for our swimmers on the Mt Sion Rooftop, and they are always looking for parents/caregivers to volunteer to help with the breakfasts. If you would like to be involved with the SSG, please contact our Chairperson, Matthew Voltz (matthewvoltz@optusnet.com.au) or David Moore (davidmoore@remax.com.au) to register your interest.

Volleyball

The Volleyball preseason program has been in full swing since Week 2. With solid numbers in all age groups. We have had over 250 boys involved in Term 4 Volleyball, including 150 in our participation program, the first time we have offered this in Term 4 for several years. Volleyball Director Mr Slater Asnicar has done an outstanding job planning and implementing the program.

With clinics scheduled, there are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in Volleyball over the holidays. Registrations are now open via College Events. Our 1st VI training squad have been working hard under the guidance of Coaches Mr Ben Bell and Mr Cameron Young and now look forward to testing themselves against some of the best schools in the state at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast from 6-10 December. The program extends its thanks to all Age Group Coordinators who have worked tirelessly throughout Term 4 and will continue through the holidays to prepare the boys for the 2022 GPS Season.

Support Groups

I would like to thank the following Support Group Chairs for their time, professionalism and caring approach to their respective programs and wish them well as they step down from their roles. We are fortunate to have such people take on such important roles in our programs, alongside all our volunteer families. I know our directors, coaches and most of all, our boys, are thankful and appreciative.

  • Terrun – Mr Declan Kelly
  • Rugby – Mr Anthony Kirk
  • Basketball – Mr David Hayes

Staff

In 2022 we farewell some long-term staff from the Cross Country program, with Mr John Hinch and Mr Damien Coman stepping down. Thank you, John, for giving 25 years as Coordinator and Damien for giving 23 years as Head Coach. In that time, Cross Country achieved nine premiership wins and ten shield season wins in a row, an outstanding result. The professionalism and caring manner you have brought to your time coaching, organising and mentoring Terrace runners is appreciated. Thank you for also continuing to be available to help the new people in charge for 2022. We also say farewell to Mr Werner Botha, who will be taking a new role with Moreton Bay Boys' College in 2022. Werner has been a great addition to our Sports program in Cross Country and Track and Field whilst also serving as a teacher for the last three years at Terrace. We wish him and his family the best.

Mr Ben Forster – Rugby Program Lead Doctor

With the graduation of Ben’s youngest son Harry in Year 12 this year, we sadly say goodbye to a dedicated member of the Rugby program. Ben has given 16 years to Terrace Rugby, many of these as lead Doctor. The time, care and follow up support for our young men and their families in stressful situations has been most valued. Ben’s understated and friendly manner makes him a significant loss to the Terrace community, but we have been fortunate to have him involved along with his wife, Annie. We thank you, Ben and Annie, and wish you both well going forward.

Seniors 2021

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all Year 12 boys who took part in Terrace Sport in 2021 and thank them for their efforts playing their respective sports at Terrace. These young men have represented the College well, some since 2014. The Terrace community is very proud of you, and in your final year, we want to thank you for pulling on the red and black for the last time.

Have a great December/January period. See you on the sidelines in 2022.
