Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the Terrace Family.

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Term 2 continues to progress very quickly. An alarming statistic, but one we all need to act on, is that there are 18 school teaching days before the Term 2 exam block commences. Whilst your initial reaction may be one of alarm, it is important that all students focus and plan for the coming weeks. Importantly, assignment planning, study/revision and homework must be more focussed during this time. I remind parents that staff tutoring occurs each week and is an excellent way for students to reinforce what they are doing in class.

I had the opportunity to attend the Junior Musical ‘Shrek’, last Saturday night. It was outstanding. Congratulations to all involved in this production – the actors, sets, costumes, music and sound/lighting were all extraordinary. The talent that exists within the terrace Family continues to amaze me. Well done to all involved.

Last Saturday at Tennyson, a Terrace student walking home after football was approached by a person in a car offering him a lift. This is a significant issue and the police have been notified. The purpose of mentioning this is to ask parents to reinforce the ‘Stranger Danger’ message to their sons. I am aware that students wait at the front gates at Tennyson and walk home after training or games. Consequently, it is important that a clear message is delivered to the students. Please assist by having a conversation with your son.

This week has seen our Years 5, 7 and 9 students involved in the Naplan testing program. Whilst the results will not be available for some time, I wish to congratulate the students on the way they approached the testing program. Thank you to the staff involved in preparing the students. I am confident the results will reflect this strong application and preparation.

This Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day. Importantly, this day provides us with an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to our mothers. The support, guidance, direction and love from our mothers is why we are who we are. Tomorrow, the Year 10 students host their Mother’s Day breakfast at Waterford. TTN will also have their Mother’s Day stall this week.

There are many poems and reflections focused on mothers, however, the poem below, ‘Thank God for Mother's Love’, is one of my favourites.

There is no love, like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother, when she gives birth.
A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.
God bless these special mothers,
God bless them everyone...
for all the tears and heartache, a
nd for the special work they've done.
When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.
Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the Terrace Family.

Finally this week, I remind students and parents about a couple of areas that need ongoing focus and attention.

College Uniform

The winter uniform, including blazer, must be worn each day. Whilst I have seen some improvement in the wearing of the College uniform, there remains room for further improvement. Students also need to wear theirs socks pulled up and ensure that Akubra hats are worn to and from school

Road Safety

The roads around the College and those leading to the City and the Valley are busy. Students must obey the road rules and cross at pedestrian crossings or lights. Support from parents in reinforcing these practices is essential. Our boys need to be careful and safe.

Pick up / Drop off

Thank you to all the parents who cooperate when driving around the College. Pease continue to show care and attention, particularly at afternoon pickup. Please avoid double parking, stopping on the road to collect your son and parking across driveways. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Have a great week and Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums.

God Bless.

Dr Michael Carroll

College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

Parking around the College remains an issue that needs your support.

Drop off and Parking

Please pardon my repetition of this message from last week but this is an ongoing and important safety issue.

One issue that continues to be of safety concern for students, staff and parents is the top drive way on Victoria Street. This is a key entry point on to the Campus for staff and an access point for students as well. Some parents dropping their sons off continue to park over the drive way and block the entry point for staff or park partially blocking off the driveway which makes the entry for staff difficult and dangerous as they cannot see students on the driveway. We would ask again that parents please refrain from stopping over or across the driveway. As always, your support on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Staff News

Congratulations to Mr Mason Hellyer who will act as Dean of Waterford during Term 3 and early Term 4 while Mr Damien Cuddihy acts as Dean of Students. Mr Hellyer brings a wealth of experience as Head of Faculty: Human Movements and Acting Dean of Studies to this role. The College will now facilitate a selection process for Acting Head of Faculty: Human Movements for this time.

Thank you to Mr Phil Elvery who has moved to the main campus for the past four weeks to look after Mrs Karyn Negus’s classes while she has been on long service leave. His support of the College has been greatly appreciated. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Negus back to the College. Thank you also to Mr Andrew King who has looked after Mr Elvery’s classes so capably for this time. We hope that Mr King may be able to return in another capacity on another occasion.

Last Saturday in the Courier Mail and with a recruitment agency, we advertised three positions:

  • Outdoor Education Instructor for our program at Maroon
  • A Learning Support Teacher to work with our Years 5 to 7 students in Maths/Science support in particular
  • A six month contract for an English/Humanities/Drama teacher.

Applications for these positions close on Monday 15 May.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

This week is the half way mark in the teaching and learning part of the term.

NAPLAN

This week our Years 5, 7 and 9 students completed their Naplan testing. The program covered Language Conventions and Writing task on Tuesday, Reading (Comprehension) on Wednesday and Numeracy on Thursday. In the event of absence on the day due to illness, missed tests will be carried out tomorrow. The outcomes of these tests will, in the coming weeks, be forwarded to Terrace and results will be posted home to parents. The results from this testing are used in our in- house program of the “Hopemeter”. This data allows us to further track and support our students.

HALF WAY POINT

This week is our half way mark in the teaching and learning part of the term. I encourage all our boys ensure they are following their study plan. At school assembly last week we spoke about the need to make sure that even though we are blessed with many resources, we must ensure that the boys use these resources and they make a commitment. This term is often a term where boys can become very committed to assignments at the expense of their exam revision. The checklist details all topics and concepts required for this term’s exams. Consolidation of learning is essential for successful outcomes. This consolidation will not occur if revision is not done repetitively across the weeks leading into exams.

PAST PUPIL

As teachers, we have the privilege to share the journey of past pupils. Our boys are very generous in returning to Terrace and keeping in contact. One of the questions I often ask past pupils is how they are coping with tertiary studies and what we could have done to further support them into their entry to further education. Last week I had a conversation with one of our Seniors of last year. He has just received some grades on his first year studies at the University of Queensland. The wonderful news was that he had received grades of seven- the highest possible score achievable. One of the many challenges in the first year of tertiary students is around the standard required and the commitment required. To achieve this grade within the first six months is certainly a credit to this young man. When I enquired about his method for this achievement, he commented on how he was still logging hours and this allowed him to track and measure his progress. It is wonderful to hear that our boys move beyond our environment and use the key study strategies to further their success at university.

I wish all our mothers a very happy Mothers' day. All the love and care you have invested in your sons have made them the wonderful young men with whom we are blessed to share our days .

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

Our formation program provides multiple opportunities for students to get to know themselves better as people and as learners.

For three days this week, I have had the great privilege of attending a Kairos retreat with 44 of our Senior students and a number of staff. Kairos is the peak retreat experience for students on their Terrace journey, and is surrounded by a good deal of mystery; a key ingredient to its success. The three days were a wonderful example of the incredible depth of reflection that our students are capable of and I was immensely proud to see them fully embrace the opportunity. While taking time out from school always poses challenges to our busy young men, experiences such as Kairos set us apart from many other schools and contribute to the overall development of what we know as the Terrace Gentleman. I strongly recommend that every young man takes the opportunity to attend a Kairos retreat when the opportunity arises in his Senior year as it is one of a number of a number of experiences that contribute to building the man.

Our formation program provides multiple opportunities for students to get to know themselves better as people and as learners. This week, our Year 8 students attended a presentation by Mr Luke McKenna, from a company known as Unleashing Personal Potential. Luke explored the concept of growth mindsets and how the neuroplasticity of the brain helps us to set ourselves high expectations and go about achieving at higher levels than we have before. This has its applications in all aspects of life, particularly in the pursuit of academic excellence, where research clearly indicates that IQ is not the major contributor to success. The better young men can understand themselves, the better equipped they are to be the best they can be.

On Monday evening, we will host Year 7 mothers and sons in the Campbell Centre for an evening of conversation led by a company known as ‘Time & Space’. The event provides an opportunity for both students and parents to gain some insight into the world of the other. We look forward to a strong attendance at what promises to be a rewarding evening. On the subject, I would like to wish all of our mums a wonderful day on Sunday. While our pastoral system attempts to emulate the atmosphere of the home, there is no substitute for family and we are greatly appreciative of the efforts of our mums in ensuring their sons’ Terrace journey is as fulfilling as possible.

NAPLAN is now complete and we are more than half way through the teaching period of the term. I trust that routines are well-established at home as the term becomes even busier for all year levels. I challenge every one of our young men to be disciplined and self-motivated at this important time.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

The Good News of Terrace – Year 5 and 6 Launch their Blanket Drive for our Eddie’s Van Friends

From Terrace to Africa and Back

We’ve all encountered challenges that at first seem insurmountable. We’ve all struggled at some stage with knowing where to begin. Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya –home to 1.2 million displaced people – the place where I stood 28 days ago being overwhelmed with figuring out where to begin. Figuring out where to begin with finding a way to help those who are living in conditions that nobody deserves to be living in. Figuring out a way to make a difference.

Fortunately, the Christian Brothers of Africa have figured out a way to make a difference. The Mary Rice Centre of Kibera, comprising of Christian Brothers and lay teachers and therapists, educates 42 disabled children from the informal settlement of Kibera. Not only was I illuminated to the possibilities of where to begin with making a difference, it illuminated to me the extraordinary compassion, dedication and commitment of people of Edmund Rice communities from across the world. Then came Vincent.

Vincent is an eight-year-old boy who attends Br Beausang school in Nairobi, Kenya. He has two brothers and one sister, all being cared for by their mum. In 2014, they arrived in Nairobi with nothing other than hope for something better. With nowhere to turn, mum knocked on the local Catholic church’s door and was greeted by the priest. The priest and parish took care of the family and connected the family with the Christian Brothers, who are now educating Vincent and his siblings at Br Beausang School. Furthermore, the local parish sponsored Vincent’s mum with a mico-finance loan that has enabled here to start up a small business to make ends meet. Again, extraordinary compassion, dedication and commitment people working together to make a difference.

From Terrace to Africa and back. I knew it would be worth it, but I wasn’t expected to be gifted with so much.

Years 5 and 6 Program Leader | Mr Brendan Ganley

During Weeks 4-6, students and their families are invited to contribute to the Eddie’s Blanket Drive.

Firstly, congratulations to students in Years 5, 7 and 9 for their dedication and application to the NAPLAN preparation this week and we hope that their results will reflect their efforts. Results for NAPLAN generally arrive at school mid Term 3.

With this busy week completed, attention can focus solely on our academic studies. This is a short term which means that for Week 4, assignments should now be in their draft stage. Students are encouraged to check with their teachers for advice and direction for where improvements need to be made. Also, even though exams are a couple of weeks away, students are reminded to take time for some remote preparation. The willingness to put extra time in now will count in the late revision stages nearer to exam time.

In Term 2 there is another opportunity for our Years 5 and 6 students to engage in Terrace Ministry programs. With the winter months approaching, Terrace would like to support our friends of the Terrace Eddie’s Van program through an Eddie’s Blanket Drive.

During Weeks 4-6, students and their families are invited to contribute to the Eddie’s Blanket Drive by bringing in blankets and items of warm clothing (adult). The provision of a warm blanket or item of clothing will be a welcome addition to our ongoing daily commitment to our Eddie’s Van friends and to ourworking as a Terrace community to make a difference to others. Congratulations again on the wonderful contributions for our Lenten Fair and Lenten Appeal and we look forward to any contributions whichcan be deposited into your son’s classroom and will then be distributed to our Eddie’s Van friends via our Big Brekkie and Night Van ministry programs.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Damien Cuddihy

Waterford is looking forward to our Mother's Day breakfast on Friday.

The Waterford community is looking forward to welcoming our mothers to the building for breakfast on Friday morning. I certainly hope that all the mums in our community have an enjoyable day on Sunday.

Your sons received notification this week of the Immersion program that they have been placed in for this year. You will also receive an invitation to “accept” this via Parent Lounge. This invitation will contain details of the contact staff and any initial information that is relevant at this point in time.

Mrs Suzanne Cook, Head of Faculty – Humanities, spoke to the cohort on Thursday to provide some insight into the History and Geography electives for Semester 2. Over the next two weeks the boys are required to select one of these subjects to continue with during the second half of the year.

A group of Year 10 students participated in the first homework club at St Mary’s of the Cross at Windsor during the week. They encountered a very enthusiastic group of P-5 students eager the spend time with the boys. This program will continue for the next four weeks and we thank the St Mary’s community for allowing us journey with them this term. We also welcome Edmund Rice Camps and Year 10 students from All Hallows’ to Waterford this weekend for our first combined Head to Heart program for the year.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Shrek was a sold out success - thank you to all involved.

Shrek-tastic success!

The Middle School Musical was held over the past weekend. From the costumes to the choreography, the singing to the makeup, our younger Gentlemen ‘did themselves proud’! Both shows were sold out within hours and so the boys played to a full house each night.

A successful show like this does not happen without the dedication of a great team. Thank you to all the parents and staff who played a vital role in ensuring the talent of our future musicals will have a great experience to draw from.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events are published.

Last weekend, the Red Peppers Pep Band performed for the half-time show at Tennyson for the football. Once again, these young men did an outstanding job and really had the crowd on side. This concludes this group’s athletics performance commitments for 2017 and we look forward to hearing them bigger and better in 2018. Congratulations also to the Terrace Jazz Combo for their performance at the Term 2 Sports Launch. I have received several positive emails from parents in the wider community commenting on the quality of performance and professionalism these young men displayed.

Next week sees a very busy performance schedule for Terrace Music. On Wednesday 17 May, we have students representing Terrace at the GPS Music Showcase. This will involve a day of rehearsals and workshops, followed by an evening concert in the QPAC Concert Hall at 7pm. Free tickets for the event are available for anyone in the community wishing to attend. Please contact music@terrace.qld.edu.au to reserve your tickets and they will be forwarded to you once they become available.

On Thursday evening, 18 May, we will be featuring our beginning and intermediate ensembles at our annual Winter Concert held in the Campbell Centre. Our premier ensembles will feature in the Norman Clarke Concert which will be held on Sunday 21 May at Villanova College. Full details for these events can be found on the Terrace App. under Culture | Music.

The Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is pleased to present the State Honours Ensemble Program Queensland (SHEP) from Thursday 28 September to Sunday 1 October to be held at Queensland Conservatorium's Southbank campus, South Brisbane. SHEP provides an opportunity for secondary school wind, brass, percussion, string and voice students to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with their peers, under the leadership of a team of eminent national and international conductors. If you would like to nominate your son, please do so by emailing bradesbensen@terrace.qld.edu.au by 3pm on Tuesday 16 May.

Registration for the Pemulwuy! National Male Voice Festival is now open. Pemulwuy! is a triennial event based in Brisbane, Queensland and we have always had a good representation from Terrace in previous years. It aims to encourage males throughout Australia to engage in singing at whatever level of experience they find themselves and to build networks between conductors and artists who work in this unique field. If you would like to register or find out more information, please visit http://www.pemulwuy.org.au/wspHome.aspx

Next week, College Assembly will feature the Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mr Jan Hewerdine.

For those of you who participate in our Premier Ensembles, the Terrace Shop now has a selection of black microfibre shirts available for $50. These will be required, along with black trousers, for the Norman Clarke Concert later this term.

For those students who perform with our beginner and intermediate level ensembles, it is a requirement that they wear grey trousers for performances. This provides a more formal and unified look as opposed to a mix of trousers and shorts. The first big concert event for these groups will be the Winter Concert on Thursday 18 May. Trousers are available from the Uniform Shop in sizes from 8 to 18. Students who perform only as part of the Year 5 and 6 Band and Strings classes do not need to purchase trousers.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events (see the list below) are published. Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

Terrace Sport encompasses a wide range of activities and the opportunity to recognise, congratulate and affirm our young men in all their endeavours should always be enthusiastically embraced.

Thank you to all that attended the Term 2 launch on Saturday evening at Tennyson. It was a particularly enjoyable evening that provided the opportunity for boys and families to mingle and recognise members of our community involved in other activities.

Terrace Sport encompasses a wide range of activities and the opportunity to recognise, congratulate and affirm our young men in all their endeavours should always be enthusiastically embraced.

Special thanks to the organisers of the evening who put together a wonderful array of raffle prizes, not to mention the impressive light display. Thank you for all your efforts.

Round 3 v ACGS

Our neighbours at East Brisbane are a good yardstick to measure our performances against as both communities are extremely similar. In recognition of this, it was very pleasing to see how well the Terrace boys performed in both the Football and Tennis programs overall.

Tennis v ACGS

For Tennis, the day was exceptional with Terrace winning 17 fixtures to 12 victories for ACGS. This is a great result across the program, but just as pleasing is the level of enjoyment that many boys are experiencing in the competition.

For the “A” program, Terrace was successful in the Open 1st and Open 2nd as well as the Year 11A, Year 9A, Year 6A and Year 5A.

For the First IV of Dan Stoddart, Stephen Stoddart, Bryce Robinson, Andrew Fowler and Xavier Lim their performance dominating the opposition so comprehensively was the stand out feature of the match up.

After the tough round the previous week – where the Terrace boys held on to win by a set – the opening four singles matches were won by the boys in Red and Black 6-0, 6-0 / 6-0, 6-0 / 6-0, 6-2 / 6-0, 6-2. A very dominant and impressive performance. Well done.

This Saturday the Terrace program and the First IV will play their nearest neighbours in BGS. Over recent years this team has had the wood over the Terrace boys. It would be very pleasing for all involved to turn the tables this Saturday.

The First IV will be playing at Victoria Park courts this Saturday from 8.30am, so if your family would like to see some first-class action, please come to the school courts. There is plenty of parking available at Centenary Pool. Your support of the boys, who are currently undefeated on top of the ladder, would be appreciated.

Football v ACGS

It was an exceptionally full day at the Tennyson Playing Fields on Saturday with 39 games scheduled against ACGS and another nine games as supplementary against BBC, NC and internal trial games.

The ACGS round is a good round to gauge the progress of the program and the results were encouraging. Of the 38 v ACGS fixture, Terrace were successful in the majority winning 22 matches with 6 draws and 10 victories to ACGS.

The level of sportsmanship on display by both the Terrace boys and the Churchie boys needs to be recognised and rewarded. It was evident on all occasions that games were played in the right spirit – thank you to all the boys and families involved. It was a very enjoyable day.

First XI

Last week I wrote about the opportunities that are present in a game and the need as a team and as individuals, to grab them when they are present. After losing last week’s game, which they should have won easily – the First XI stepped up a few gears in intensity to dominate their opposition and lead into half time 2-0. The goals were representative of simple tenacity and pressure – not a lot of fancy footwork but simply a ‘never give in’ attitude. It was not always pretty but it was determined and focused

ACGS fought back strongly in the second half to eventually go down 2-1. Congratulations to the boys – well done – just rewards for your hard work so far this season.

Round 4 v BGS

It is interesting to note the modern version of the big round for many today is the round against Nudgee College. However, for others, those that were around in the 70s, 80s and 90s – it is the round against BGS which truly brings out the emotion.

The opportunity is available this weekend to gain the bragging rights for the Spring Hill supremacy and a chance to beat the boys in blue.

In Tennis, they have been No 1or No 2 for the last decade and are very strong across their program. In Football, they have been the No 1 program and in the First XI, top 3 for the last decade.

Saturday is a chance to reclaim a little glory – peg them back a little and close the gap.

All fixtures in Tennis and Football will be closely contested – there will be no easy victories. Be focussed. Be ready to play. Saturday is a true test for all involved.

Cross Country

The Terrace program competed at the Queensland Athletics All School Cross Country Championships last Saturday at Kedron SHS. This was a significant step up in quality racing for the boys and provided an opportunity for boys to test themselves against the best individuals and teams across the state, it was a step up in intensity.

Overall, Terrace fielded 60 boys in numerous three-man teams.

The Open team of Nick Erzetic, Jeremy Davis and Dominic Walsh were outstanding coming first in the state teams event. Special note to Nick who finished third overall individually in the Open category. The Under 16 team of Oliver Seawright, Xavier Watson and Oscar Gallagher finished second overall in their team’s event.

Special mention to Oliver who finished first overall individually in the Under 16 category.

Both Nick and Oliver have recorded automatic qualifiers to the Athletics Australia National Cross Country Championships in Wollongong in August.

Football Wrap

Round 3 delivered a terrific result for Terrace Football, with the 1st XI celebrating a solid win against ACGS. Both teams displayed a senior style of football, with counter-attacking skills that impressed football supporters of all levels. James Leech repaid his coach and team mates for his start in the 1st XI by putting pressure on the Churchie goalkeeper, then pouncing on the keeper’s error to slot home our first goal. A set play for Terrace allowed Oscar Sullivan to beat the off side trap and, at the far post, pick up a loose ball which he slotted with confidence. Later in the game, Churchie clawed back one goal, but Terrace held out and played with control and discipline to bring home their first win of the season. We’re looking to repeat that performance this weekend against BGS at home. The enthusiastic support from the GT Army and other spectators helped to lift the team over the line and we hope to see more of that going forward.

The Senior teams had a fantastic weekend, with wins across the board.

  • 1st XI: 2-1 win
  • 2nds: 2-1 win
  • 3rds: 4-2 win
  • 4ths: 2-0 win
  • 5ths: 3-0 win
  • Year 11: 4 wins, 2 draws
  • Year 10: 3 wins, 3 losses
  • Year 9: 4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses
  • Year 8: 5 wins, 1 draw
  • Year 7: 4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses
  • Year 6: 2 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss
  • Year 5: 2 wins, 2 losses

Terrace finished with 22 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses against Churchie and 28 wins, 7 draws and 10 losses overall.

This sensational result was a fitting way to officially kick-off the season, with the Term 2 Sports Launch on Saturday night a resounding success. Students and their parents from Football, Cross Country, Tennis and Gymnastics enjoyed an evening of fine food and great entertainment, including the Terrace band whose swing numbers impressed the crowd.

The Football Support Group, which organised this year’s event, would like to thank the following sponsors who generously donated prizes for the raffle: Emporium Hotel, Roxanne Gorman photography, Brisbane City Football Club, Anderson's Treasure Store, Canterbury, Noller & Turner Travel Associates, Brisbane Centenary Pool, Domino’s Pizza Spring Hill, Brisbane Roar, Botanical Restaurant (James Street), Barber Girl.

This weekend marks the half-way point of the season so we’d like as many people as possible to come out and support our boys at home against Brisbane Grammar. Go the Red and Black!

Our Round 3 clash was another impressive result for both our 1st IV and 2ND IV tennis teams.

Our 1st IV boys swept through the Churchie team without dropping a set. All four boys were impressive in both their singles and double matches this week. Stephen Stoddart was almost flawless for the match dropping only 3 games in 6 sets of tennis. Xavier Lim on debut in the 1st team also performed extremely well winning all three of his match dropping only 6 games for the day.

We have traditionally had very close matches with Churchie but this year was different. Our boys are match hardened and have been a core group of players now for more than three seasons. They showed much better combinations in doubles and executed their singles plays with power and precision.

The Final score was 8 – 16 – 96 to 0 – 0 -12. Our boys now sit on top of the GPS ladder with 3 wins from 3 matches.

Our 2ND IV have also become a team to be reckoned with. They also sit on the top of the table at 3 and 0 for the season. The form of these boys has been just as impressive as the 1st IV boys. With Eddie Brockhurst coming into the team this week adding guile and maturity our boys dominated from the start of the match. Two of our younger boys Charlie Van Balen and Dominic Anderson have gone through the season barely dropping games in singles. Charlie won 1 and 1 while Dom was flawless in another 0 and 0 score line.

The final score was 5 – 11 – 73 to 1 – 2 – 34.

This week we play a much tougher team in BGS. My message to our entire program is, we need to focus on competing and trusting / executing the processes we have been putting in place in training. (PLAY YOUR GAME.)

This Sunday we celebrate Mother's Day, an important day to tell your mother how much you appreciate her.

This weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day. It is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and say thank you for all that our mothers do. This Sunday every single Terracian should be treating their mother to every possible luxury. A suggested guide would be: begin the morning with breakfast in bed, obviously. The breakfast should be accompanied by gifts, of course. If you are yet to make a purchase, this Saturday at Tennyson the Terrace Timor Network will be selling gifts. Treating your mother and helping Timorese communities, could there be a more perfect present? For the rest of the day make sure you are following her every command, without a disgruntled commentary. You are at her beck and call; her feet should not touch the floor. After all that is done, lastly, and most importantly, tell her how much you appreciate all that she does for you.

But when we celebrate our mothers this Sunday, do not sell them short. Do not reduce their contributions to the maternal field. Whilst you can thank them for driving you to footy, ironing your uniforms or helping you with homework, don’t thank them for only that. Do not forget the lives beyond your own that mothers lead. Mothers are not just cleaners, peacekeepers and tutors for your own personal use. Mothers are CEO’s, barristers, teachers, doctors, engineers. Mothers are researching cures to disease, campaigning for the protection of human rights, leading countries, and so much more. The point is, this Sunday do not simply thank your mothers for their maternal actions in your life, but also for their contributions to our wider society. Do not simply appreciate her value as a mother, appreciate her value as a woman.

It's your last chance to get the Terrace Cookbook Special..

Terrace Cookbook Special

The “High Tea Cookbook Special” will finish Friday, in time for last orders for Mothers’ Day. For $50 you will receive the Terrace Cookbook ($5 saving), a free GT Tea Towel and the Red and Black canvas carry bag. This is a total saving of $25. You can purchase the package at the Uniform Shop or via this link on the Colleege website. The response to the sale has been overwhelming. Thank you to everyone who has let us know how much their family is enjoying the lovely recipes. The Cookbook is also a lovely memento for your Senior boy, so maybe consider putting one away for him for the future (no more two minute noodle feasts!). Next Monday 15 May, the Cookbook returns to the normal price ($55 each) and will continue to be available at the Uniform Shop and via the link above.

Tennyson Canteen

Last Saturday we saw our football teams play against Churchie. It was a very busy day with games right up until the season launch. A big thanks to all who helped out in the canteen and congratulations to our 1st XI finishing off the day with an exciting win. There certainly was a buzz about Tennyson that we got to enjoy from the canteen. There is a live broadcast into the screen between the BBQ and the canteen so if you find yourself in the behind the counter during the big games – you don’t miss out on the action.

We back up with another home game this coming weekend against BGS so please drop in and help out in the canteen if you can. The volunteer sign on link will be sent out with this week’s football notice from the Sport Office, but feel free to drop by and help if you have some free time when you are at Tennyson – you don’t need to have signed up to come in and help. Home bake is always welcome to sell at the Canteen too.
