Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

As we move into the Lenten period, it is important to note that this is a time of preparation for Easter. Central to our Catholic Faith is the death and the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. Lent provides us with an opportunity to prepare and reflect on who we are as Catholics. As a College community we have mechanisms to facilitate this reflection including events such as the Lenten Appeal and the Lenten Fair. I encourage all families to support these activities.

This week has seen a number of important events take place including the Academic Medal Assembly and the Parent/Tutor interviews. There were 325 young men who received an academic medal on Tuesday and a very large number of parents at the Parent/Tutor interviews on Wednesday. My thanks and congratulations to all involved.

The last of the Parent Information evenings was held last night. I thank the College Leadership Team and other staff who attended the seven nights over the last two weeks. They create a busy start to the school year but are important. We would appreciate any feedback from families so that we can further enhance the value of these evenings.

The building program is gaining momentum. By now you will have noticed that further demolition work is occurring. I spoke to the students this week about safety and awareness as they move around the College grounds and I issue a similar warning to parents, particularly if you are visiting the College for an event. This current stage of demolition will continue for another two weeks.

Activities and events continue to occur. Information and reminders about these events is advertised via our various communication platforms. A special reminder about the Red and Black Cocktail Party - tickets are selling fast so I would encourage you to book your tickets soon.  I'd also remind people that tickets for the Terrace Rowing Race Day will soon go on sale.  These will also be quickly sold so be sure to purchase your tickets early.

As we approach the end of Week 4, I remind parents that the assessment period is well underway and that the exam block is only four weeks away. I know that many students are approaching their school work and study very well. However, academic success is only achieved with hard work and a consistent approach to homework, revision and study and it needs to be occurring now.

Finally this week, I congratulate our Sporting and Debating teams on an excellent start to their seasons. The results have been very encouraging, and I have been impressed with the way we have competed – positively and competitively. We need to maintain this high standard for the second half of the season.

Thank you to our non-teaching staff

At Terrace, it is relatively easy to spot the CLT, House Deans, Heads of Faculty and teachers but there are hundreds of people behind the scenes who play a vital role. After the Swimming Carnival, we see the school begin to settle into a routine and after all of the wonderful imagery and moments of the ‘first days’, it is important to recognise the staff who make sure things are in place, working and organised. There is a huge machine of people across our four campuses that bring everything together on time. Just this fortnight we have seen over 1000 boys participate in co-curricular activities, four parent information nights, dozens of committee meetings and the wonderful ritual of the Senior Induction Mass at the University of Queensland. It definitely takes a village to raise a Terrace Gentleman!

The Terrace Ladies Group

Sincere thanks to Mrs Mel Josephson and all of the volunteers who have assisted across the three welcome functions this month and the Year 12 Induction Mass and function at the University of Queensland. Thank you to the generous Year 11 families for their assistance.

The highlight of Week 4 was our acknowledgment at our full school assembly on Tuesday of the 325 students who were awarded medals based upon their Semester 2 results from last year.

This represents close to 25% of our community receiving medals. To receive a gold medal a student must achieve grades of A in all subjects; silver being a result of A in every subject less one and bronze in every subject less two. We often quote that it is more difficult to receive a gold medal than it is to achieve an OP score of One. A total of 91 students from Years 5 to 11 (we do not recognise Year 12 due to their graduation from the College in November) received gold medals. This assembly also recognises the student from each year level who has made significant improvement and who also exhibits a strong work ethic and is respectful of both his peers and his teachers. My congratulations to the recipients of these awards - Harvey Leach (Year 5, 2017), Charles Mills (Year 6, 2017), Arthur Arkinstall (Year 7, 2017), Dominic Cleary (Year 8, 2017) Zac Pennisi (Year 9, 2017), Patrick Meehan (Year 10, 2017) and Max Poteri (Year 11, 2017). Names of all students who were recognised at our assembly have been posted on the Parent Lounge.

My thanks to the many parents who attended our Parent Information evenings. Your continued interest and support strengthens our ability as a school to achieve the best possible outcomes for our boys. As requested, a summary of the presentations has been posted on the College App.

Last Thursday our Year 12 students were engaged in a workshop on writing skills. Our guest facilitator for this workshop was Dr Ian Hunter who is recognised internationally for his expertise in this area. Our Seniors found this workshop most valuable.

As we conclude Week 4, we are at the halfway point of our teaching, leading into exams in Weeks 9 and 10. It is most important that every student has a study plan and that the study plan is followed. It is generally around Week 4 and Week 5 when the excitement and energy around the start of the term has passed and the distance from the end of term appears to be “far away". As such, some students can experience a decrease in commitment. I encourage all boys to continue to focus on their studies. I am most encouraged by the number of students who are successfully completing their Friday roll call. This simple exercise of recalling key points, concepts and rules from the week is a very powerful tool for both recall and understanding.

A reminder to our Years 11 and 12 students that the study group operates every day of the week from 3.15 to 5.15pm.

Year 12 students engaged in Dr Hunter’s workshop

A great feature of a Terrace education is the partnership that exists between home and school. If we are to raise our young men to be the best they can be, we have the best chance when we do it together. Hence, we invite parents to be part of the Terrace journey and they accept the invitation wholeheartedly. In recent weeks we have conducted Parent Information evenings for all year levels and the attendance at these events has been outstanding. Similarly, we were blessed with the usual fabulous response to our Parent/Tutor evening this week. At Tuesday’s Academic Medal assembly we again had a huge number of guests in attendance to celebrate the achievements of the 325 medal recipients. These three events are just a few examples of the school/home alliance in action and I thank parents for your ongoing commitment to be present for your son’s journey.

Inter-House events are the epitome of what the House system is all about and last Friday’s Swimming Carnival was no exception. I want to pay a particular tribute to our Senior students whose enthusiasm this year has been excellent. Days such as last Friday are a perfect opportunity to walk the walk of leadership and I know that House Deans were delighted with how well so many of our young men stepped up in a spirit of service. The Seniors of 2018 are working hard to leave a positive legacy and we thank them for their ongoing efforts.

With the year’s first four weeks now all but gone, we are coming to the end of what I consider to be the honeymoon period of the year. The early enthusiasm and good intentions can be tested at this time as the weekly grind hits home. One key to remaining focused and motivated is to have good routines in place and to work to a plan. It is important that every student has a weekly plan to ensure he meets all his study and co-curricular expectations, while staying well rested and as stress-free as possible. If there is no plan in place, this weekend would be a good time to develop one. It can be a good parent/son activity to put such a plan together and then monitor its implementation.

A final reminder that next Wednesday 21 February, we will host a Year 8 Father/Son Evening in the Campbell Centre. I have written home to relevant families with details, but feel free to be in contact if you have any questions or concerns. If dads are not available, another significant male mentor is most welcome. I look forward to a memorable evening for our young and not-so-young boys.

Our Lenten journey begins

Yesterday we commenced our Lenten journey. Lent is a season of being invited by God in a deeply personal way. “Come back to me, with all of your heart,” Jesus invites. “We will,” we respond, but we aren’t quite ready yet, our hearts are not always in it. We avoid Jesus, make up excuses and take the easy road. We are not ready for God to love us.

Our tradition invites us to do three things during Lent. Yesterday, we heard from St Matthew in the Gospel reading, Jesus told us about these three things. The first thing is called alms giving. It simply means that during Lent, in a special way we are called to give all we can to people in need. That can be by helping or by sharing or by giving generously without the thought of receiving anything in return. St Matthew uses a great saying in yesterday’s Gospel where Jesus reminds us not to ‘blow our own trumpet’ about what we give but to do it humbly and quietly. Our Lenten appeals where we celebrate our relationships with our House Friendship Groups and our partnership with the Christian Brothers' community in East Timor are great opportunities to give alms this Lent.

The second thing we are invited to do in a special way during Lent is to pray. St Matthew reminds us that prayer is not ‘for show’ but is a genuine time for reflection, for quiet and for connection with self, family, community and your spirituality.

The third opportunity to join the Lenten journey is to fast. Fasting means to go without and to let go of things that we do not need in our lives. It means to cleanse and to simplify. The trick is that like Jesus’ time in the desert, it has got to hurt a little, it has got to be a sacrifice that puts you out of your comfort zone. Jesus reminded us in yesterday’s reading that even if it is hurting or you are uncomfortable, don’t look sad or complain to your friends and family. Be positive and committed to the experience.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, we prepare ourselves for the 40 days of Lent by reflecting on our own struggles, mistakes and times we have not been our best selves. Yesterday, we were called to say 'sorry' and to begin a new journey. We were marked with the sign of Jesus, the cross on our forehead, and we were called to turn away from sin and all that tempts us and to follow the Gospel and the servant leadership of Jesus who came so that we could have life and have it to the full.

We now enter a spiritual time, letting go of the trappings and excess that we are accustomed to and the activities, sometimes seemingly good ones that consume us, so as to focus on God again. However, since we come from God, God is there with us, gently guiding us, as he did Jesus, through the most treacherous of wilderness experiences. In these next six weeks we will journey with Jesus. We will be tempted together, pray together, reveal our most inner thoughts and feelings to him, and finally share in his suffering and death on a cross; we will continue our journey knowing that in six weeks’ time, we will experience the joy of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Yesterday as a Catholic/Christian community, we started the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Lent is a significant time in the church calendar when we are called to reflect on the meaning of our faith journey. It is a season of prayer, repentance, fasting and connection.

Last Tuesday, we welcomed back our OP1 recipients and acknowledged not only their achievements, but the extraordinary work of the whole Year 12 class of 2017. The stories and strategies that were shared were there for all students to take on board. These strategies are the stepping stones or guidelines to keep in mind for Terrace students as they begin the period in the term where assessment takes centre stage.

The key words from the Scholars' Assembly were time, hard work and placing yourself in the best environment to succeed. These key areas can be worked on and achieved throughout 2018, not only for our current Year 12 students, but also for our newest members experiencing the Terrace culture for the first time.

These strategies would have been instilled in the minds of those young men who received academic medals on Tuesday when they embarked on their first years at Terrace.

Next week marks the half way point in our term. The settling into new classes and subjects has taken place and now it is time to establish that learning environment whether it be a study plan, a quiet space or a study group. These steps lead to greater success.

It was a busy week in Year 5 with a visit from Geckoes Wildlife to provide some examples of how animals adapt to their environment in order to survive. Today and tomorrow Year 5 will travel into the city as part of the Humanities and Religion unit of study and visit the Commissariat Store and St Stephen’s chapel. On Wednesday and Thursday next week, we travel to St Helena Island as another part of the experiential approach to learning for the young men. The guided study of St Helena gives students an insight into Brisbane’s colourful past.

It is important to begin planning for assessment to reduce the pressure and panic that go with last minute efforts when poor choices are made. Be prepared and plan.

The GPS reaches its centenary this year, providing a special opportunity to celebrate 100 years of the GPS spirit of fellowship. The GPS Centenary Music Showcase is a day of music making culminating in performances by students from all nine GPS schools in choir, symphony orchestra and concert band. Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) will host the Centenary Showcase featuring the hugely popular work, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, performed by a massed choir of 300 voices and an orchestra of 107 musicians, conducted by Maestro Andrew Mogrelia.

King of the Hill debate

Unfortunately GT was defeated in the annual King of the Hill debate with the Senior A going down by two points in the debate held at Grammar. Well done to the Year 7 teams and their coaches Mrs Suzanne Cook and Miss Bridget Clarke, with three of the four teams being victorious, our best results for the night.

In Round 3 this week, we host Brisbane Boys' College. We look forward to seeing you support your teams on Friday night.

Looking ahead to Rounds 4 and 5, we will be travelling to TSS and IGS. For both rounds, we will be departing straight after school by bus and all students participating must travel with the bus to the hosting school. We will be providing afternoon tea when we arrive. Parents are able to collect their son to return home after their debate. It is important to advise your son's coach before leaving the venue. Remaining students will travel by bus back to Terrace at the conclusion of the Senior A debate. Coaches will be in contact soon to collect information to assist in the collation of rolls and dietary requirements for these two rounds. I would appreciate your assistance in providing them the necessary information at your earliest opportunity.

Finally, a reminder that any photographing or recording in a debate is not permitted under GPS and QDU Rules – unless approval has been given by the MICs of both schools. There were a number of supporters at the debates at BGS that were using devices to record and photograph during the debate. On behalf of GPS, we ask you to please delete these photographs and recordings as they breach the rules of the competition and, in some cases, privacy/child protection laws. Photographs may be taken before and after debates by supporters of their own school’s team with permission of those being photographed. We thank you for your support in this situation.

The Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is pleased to present the inaugural State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) Middle School - South-East Queensland from Friday 1 June to Sunday 3 June 2017, held at Queensland Conservatorium's South Bank campus in Brisbane. SHEP provides an opportunity for middle school (Years 5 - 8) wind, brass, percussion, string and voice students to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with their peers from South East Queensland, under the leadership of a team of eminent conductors from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Many thanks to all the boys who made the effort to support the 1^st XI and the 1^st VI at the respective fixtures of Cricket and Volleyball on the weekend.

The Campbell Centre witnessed good crowd numbers and the Terrace team stepped up their performance, taking the game to BSHS and easily recorded their most dominant victory of the season so far to currently be sitting 3 and 0. This weekend the Red and Black will face their toughest assignment of the season when they face Churchie in what will most likely be the toughest game of the year. It would be outstanding if the boys who were present in the Campbell Centre on Saturday also found time this weekend to support the team at Churchie. Your support makes the world of difference.

Good numbers of boys were also present supporting the 1^st XI at Tennyson to witness the team perform strongly with a bonus point victory over BSHS. Again, this result was based upon an overall team performance with all boys contributing. Terrace scored a good total of 269 and then defended stoutly to restrict the visitors to 176 in their 50 overs.

The College Age Swimming championships were completed on Saturday evening at Centenary Pool with significant numbers of boys in attendance. Boys competed in numerous events to record their best results across numerous strokes. Many thanks to the Swimming Support Group who worked tirelessly on Friday morning and Saturday evening supporting the program and the boys – your efforts are truly appreciated.

The rowers were met by hot conditions on Saturday at Wyaralong and the racing was very competitive for all year levels. The 1^st VIII came home fourth in both races, not that far off the pace for the day and many crews recorded strong placings in all the races.

This weekend’s sporting activities for Cricket and Volleyball will be away at Churchie. Rowing will again be at Wyaralong with BGS hosting and the Swimming program will engage in the Gregory Terrace hosted Swimming meet at Centenary Pool on Friday evening. A reminder that those cricket teams playing at Tennyson this weekend will have their team photo taken for the Yearbook.  Check the app for photo times.

GPS CRICKET | ROUND 3 | SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY

A capacity Tennyson was full of anticipation on Saturday as warm conditions greeted cricketers and their families for Round 3. Terrace faced Brisbane State High School in the A/B program, a College who are traditionally strong in their A teams, but the Terrace Cricket program’s strength is in its depth, which resulted in Terrace winning 12 of 17, punctuated by a 93-run win for the 1^st XI. Terrace were also able to get over the line in 16 of the 28 supplementary matches that were played by the majority of the program, outlining the incredible depth that the program has and closing out a successful round of cricket. Each week we recognise the individual efforts of players that take wickets and score runs, but on Saturday the difference in many of the matches were the small but considerable efforts that went unsung such as a diving save, hard running between wickets or excellent support from the sidelines. These team first plays are what the Terrace Cricket culture is built on and we congratulate those boys who meet this standard week in and week out.

GPS CRICKET | ROUND 4 | SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY

In Round 4 of GPS Cricket, Terrace will play Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in matches both home and away as well as a number of teams representing the College in supplementary matches. Traditionally, the Churchie round is always a very competitive weekend of cricket and we look forward to all matches being played in a great competitive spirit. Any opportunity to represent the College and play alongside school mates should be relished by all players and we look forward to seeing many of the Terrace Cricket community at Tennyson and Churchie again this Saturday.  A reminder that cricket teams playing at Tennyson this week will have their team photos taken for the Yearbook.  Please keep an eye on the App for photo times.  Boys should ensure they are on time for their team photo and wearing full cricket playing kit.

1st XI MATCH REPORT

GT 8/269 (50 Overs) def. BSHS 10/176 (50 overs)

Round 3 of the GPS season saw Terrace host Brisbane State High School with both teams still chasing their first win after the first two rounds of competition. With Co-Captain Will Kirk missing through injury, Lachlan Marshall was presented with cap #776 ahead of his 1^st XI debut as Terrace won the toss and batted under bright blue skies.

Nick McGill and Michael Pease looked to start positively but the State High opening bowlers delivered a high-quality opening spell, which eventually claimed the wicket of Pease (10) as Terrace battled hard to gather some momentum. Tom Pappalardo joined McGill and together the pair wrestled the momentum Terrace’s way and took the score to 1/83 at the first drinks break. Just as the pair looked to break away Pappalardo (22) edged behind and McGill (49) followed in similar fashion a few overs later. This brought James Hurst and debutant Marshall together for a critical partnership in the context of the Terrace innings and the pair responded fantastically. Marshall brought up a debut 50 off just 38 ballsand was well supported by Hurst (35) as the partnership provided a good platform for the last 10 overs of the innings. Both batters were dismissed in quick succession; however Ryan Walker (37 not out), Riley Sela (12) and Cooper Simmonds (11 not out) all played aggressive cameos which pushed Terrace to 8/269 off 50 overs.

Despite posting a very competitive score, Terrace were well aware a polished bowling and fielding performance was required against an aggressive State High batting line-up in very good batting conditions. After some wayward bowling early on, the bowlers settled into a good rhythm and began to apply pressure from both ends, which resulted in a run out to Max Law. Nick Morton (2/21 off 9) bowled consistently throughout the opening 20 overs as State High battled to reach 2/45 with the required run rate climbing above 7 an over. McGill (1/21 off 10) and Walker (0/39 off 10) continued to apply dot ball pressure through the middle overs combined with two excellent run outs by Marshall and Ed Backstrom as State High slipped to 6/140 with 10 overs to go. The reintroduction of Law (1/18 off 5) and Backstrom (2/20 off 5) proved to be the icing on the cake as Terrace sealed a bonus point victory with Sela completing a fourth run out off the final ball of the innings.

The win was no less than Terrace deserved after battling hard in the first two rounds and the team will take great confidence from executing well against a State High outfit that applied pressure at various key periods in the match. The next assignment is a tough away trip to face a well drilled Churchie outfit on Saturday, in what shapes as another crucial match in the context of the season.

Representative Sport

Terrace students are eligible to trial for selection into District and Met Nth Regional representative teams in many sports. Our primary students nominate via City Dist. and our secondary students via Nth Independent or in some cases Met Nth directly depending on the sport. Boys will only be nominated if they are of a high standard and meet qualifying times in respective sports.

Friday Carnival

This coming Friday (16Febrauary) the carnival is at the Centenary Pool. This will start at 4.30pm. Boys will meet in Tracey Court at 3.15pm and will be supervised until 4pm when they will move over to Centenary Pool. This is a relay carnival with a trophy on the line so all boys are required to swim. There will be a BBQ during the carnival. Please find the program for Friday attached.

Volleyball

Ms Kaitlin Sullivan – Head Coach report

Round 3 of GPS Volleyball saw Terrace match up against Brisbane State High School. Results reflected the hard work from our preseason camps and training as most teams began to find rhythm and picked up some of their first wins of the season. Tobias Graham’s excellent communication and teamwork helped the 7As pick up their second win in a row and the 8As kept their winning streak alive with strong blocking and hitting from Joel Smith.  Jake Laherty’s smart setting decisions contributed to the 9As  2-0 win. Ben Weeden was dominant in the 10As. The 11As found themselves in a deciding third set and came out victorious with consistent passing and attack from Andrew Kimmins. The 2^nd VI won 2-0 and Richard Lindsay was very effective through the middle. A very successful day for Terrace Volleyball as 19 of our 24 teams were victorious. This Saturday we match up against Churchie, this is a very important round in our quest for premierships. Everyone is encouraged to support the 1^st VI and all other teams throughout the day.

Terrace Volleyball 1^st VI completely outclassed BSHS in front of a packed Campbell Centre for the ‘Pride of Program’ day, in what can only be described as a clinical performance. It was always going to be a difficult game for the visiting team; however the level of focus and skill execution displayed by all members of the Terrace team proved an insurmountable task. Terrace used this game as an opportunity to build ahead of important games against ACGS and BGS in the coming weeks. While there were many strong individual performances, Oscar Dixon was named MVP for his leadership on and off the court in addition to his valuable contributions to the match itself.

7A with a great win and celebration after the game

Last Friday afternoon, the annual Great Debate was held at Brisbane Grammar and I was blown away by the outstanding support demonstrated by the men in white shirts. There were around 70 boys who stayed at school until 7pm, making the walk over to Grammar all in the good cause of supporting fellow Terracians. Although we lost, it was a truly riveting debate, with every boy in the room staying until the closing decision. The number of boys willing to give up their Friday afternoon gave a good indication of what the rest of the year has in store for us as a community.

As Week 4 draws to a close, it is essential that boys stay focused on the tasks at hand. It is easy to start strong, but the challenge comes with maintaining that pace all the way through to the end of term. We have had great effort from students in the classroom, in co-curricular activities and around the school in general. If we want to maintain these successes to make the most of Term 1, we need to make sure we are balancing our time effectively and putting in the effort.

Success does not just happen, it must be worked at. The most effective way to do this is by supporting your mates. Whatever facet of school life it may be, we must support and celebrate each person’s talents in order to make our school stronger, and to achieve these successes. Although not all of us can debate or play 1^st XI cricket, each person brings something unique to the College. However small it may be, these talents are what make up our school and by standing Shoulder to Shoulder this year and celebrating each other’s talents, Terrace will be a better place.

Red and Black Cocktail Party

I would like to give you all a friendly reminder that the tickets for the Red and Black Cocktail Party to be held on Saturday 3 March can be bought via this (Link) and on the College Events page . This is the only full school event for 2018 and is a social occasion, not a fundraiser. Tickets are $55 each, which include canapés and live entertainment with a cash bar. Out of the 700 tickets available, there are less than 30 left at this stage, so don’t delay in getting your tickets.

Years 5 – 9 Mothers' Morning Tea

Looking ahead, on Friday 27 April (Week 2, Term 2) we have the Years 5 – 9 Mothers’ Morning Tea in the Victoria Park Golf Club marquee. Last year was the first time an event like this was held. The 300 ladies who attended all agreed that it was a fabulous morning for connecting with other ladies in our sons’ year groups. The term “friendraiser” was the theme of the day and it certainly was all of that. Planning is well underway for this year’s event. More details will be coming over the following weeks with invitations being emailed before the end of term. Ticket sales will be via the Events page on the College website and of course it is always a good idea to get in early to avoid the disappointment of missing out. Ladies are seated in nominated year groups, so there is no urgency to organise groups to sit with. We also take a lot of care in the placing ladies on tables to ensure you have a wonderful time together.

Buddy Program

It is no accident that Terrace is known for our hospitality and close community, one way we foster this is through the TLG Parent Buddy Program. Almost 90 families were matched this year with current families in the same year level or suburb. Being a buddy is as easy as helping with public transport tips, uniform questions or coming along to meetings or events together. Thank you to everyone involved and if you would like a buddy or to be one, please email Mrs Leisa Low bllow@bigpond.com. Leisa is the Vice President of the TLG, in charge of logistics, and she would be very happy to assist.

There are still spaces throughout the electronic Parent Directory on the Parent Lounge, so I am sending out another reminder to parents yet to 'sign on'. Please log onto the Parent Lounge, update your details and “share” if you are happy for others in your various year levels to contact you if the need arises (e.g. accidental bag swap, lifts to training, invitations etc). This is also crucial for our year level coordinators.
