Term 2 has been another busy time and I thank families for their valuable contributions during the term.
Dear Members of the Terrace Family,
It is hard to believe that Term 2 is at an end and the well-deserved holidays commence tomorrow. Our students have been engaged in exams over the last week or so and I wish to commend them on their effort and application during this time. I am confident that their hard work will produce the results they deserve.
This term we will continue to send reports in an electronic format only. An end of term letter from myself will also be emailed to all families. The reports will then be available in the Parent Lounge later that day, Tuesday 27 June. This method of distribution is different to previous terms. By posting the reports in Parent Lounge you will be able to retrieve them at any stage in the future. The College is also in the process of uploading ‘historical reports’. This will mean that all of your sons reports over his time at Terrace will be accessible through the Parent Lounge into the future.
For parents of students in Years 7, 8 and 9 there will be an additional letter emailed to families over the holidays. This letter will detail information regarding the new senior schooling ATAR system, and an invitation to a Parent Information Evening to be held on Wednesday 2August. I encourage families to review the information in my letter and to attend the Parent Information Evening.
As the term concludes I take this opportunity to outline some of the staff changes for Term 3. Ms Christene Clark, a member of the Learning Enrichment Team since 2015, is finishing at Terrace. I thank Christene for her efforts and dedication and wish her all the best with her future endeavours. Some staff are taking periods of leave during Term 3 and these include Mr Damien Fall, Ms Loren Serafin-Huey, Mr Michael Wooldridge, Mr David Giles and Mrs Mary Meadows. I wish each of these staff members all the best for their period of leave.
Although the holidays are about to commence, there are many staff, students and parents involved in a range of activities over the holidays including the USA Music tour, the NZ Rugby tour, Basketball clinics and Rugby clinics. My thanks to those involved in these activities and I hope they all go well.
Finally, Term 2 has been another busy time and I thank families for their valuable contributions during the term. I hope that the holidays provide an opportunity to recharge and I look forward to reconnection in Term 3.

School Officers' Day
During this week, we joined schools throughout Queensland in celebrating School Officers Day. The non-teaching component of our staff faculty is a highly skilled and generous group of people who contribute significantly to many aspects of school life. Their expertise, commitment and collaboration assist in the safe, efficient and productive running of Terrace on a daily basis and we thank them most sincerely for their contribution to this, and every year at Terrace.
This week we have welcomed back Mrs Marie Allen, Assistant to the College Principal from her long service leave. I hope she was as happy to see us! Thank you to Mrs Cath Gooley for her contribution in acting in Mrs Allen’s role. Her presence in the Treacy Building will be missed but no doubt she will be back in her many voluntary roles within the Terrace Family.
As the term comes to a close, I take this opportunity to wish staff commencing some long service leave or leave after the break well for their time away. Best wishes to Mr Damien Fall, Mr David Giles, Mrs Mary Meadows, Mrs Loren Serafin-Huey and Mr Michael Wooldridge.
A reminder that Mr Damien Cuddihy will act as Dean of Students for Term 3 and Mr Mason Hellyer will lead Waterford for this time while Mr Rob Sweeper will act as Head of Faculty: Human Movement. Mrs Sian Graham will facilitate Mr Giles’s classes at Waterford for Semester 2 and Mrs Susie Cooper returns to lead Mrs Meadow’s classes for the first half of Term 3. Mr James Turner will act as Head of Faculty: Business and Technology and Mrs Natalie Berndt will join us in Term 3 to teach Year 11 Accounting and Year 9 Business. Mr Matthew Shields will move to facilitate Mr Wooldridge’s classes for Semester 2 and Mrs Megan Montaner and Mrs Bronwyn Platz join the Exceptional Learners Faculty working with Years 5 to 9 in particular and Mr Patrick Collins will join the HPE team for Term 3 with Mr Alex Berry continuing in Term 3 in HPE and as the Faculty Aide as well.
We look forward to welcoming back Head of Science Faculty, Mr Andrew Ball, Dean of Windsor House, Mr Anthony Hayward and Art/RE teacher, Mrs Janine Sulzer after their Term 2 leave. I thank Mrs Jamie Newnham for her work as Acting Head of Science and Mr Peter Finch for his contribution as Acting Co-ordinator of Physics while Mr Ball has been on leave. Thank you also to Ms Maia Calci and Mr Liam Herne for assisting with Mrs Sulzer’s leave and thank you to Mr Anthony Baruksopulo for his care of Windsor House as Acting Dean.

EXAMS and REPORTING
As the final week of the term comes to a close, I do hope that boys are satisfied and feel proud of their efforts both across the term and also in their exams. This past week has been very busy and I am sure that the holiday break will be celebrated and appreciated by many boys and families. Next week our staff focus on marking exams and collating of results which will be reflected in reports. Electronic copies of reports will be sent at the conclusion of the week. Hard copies will not be posted home.
The semester report offers information on topics covered throughout the semester, a result for Term 2 and a semester result. This report will also show the tracking graph for each subject. This tracking allows students to view their own progress and the progress of the average of the cohort within the subject. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will also receive a “bubble” report which identifies their position in the subject relative to all other students.
Next term there is again the opportunity for parents and students to meet with teachers to discuss outcomes and strategies for the term ahead. Booking for these interviews will be via the Parent Lounge and information will be sent home within the reporting package to assist in the booking process. The interview opportunities are in week two and three of next term - Wednesday July 19 and July 26.
Year 11 and Year 12
Next term all students in Years 11 and 12 will receive an estimated OP score based upon their latest relevant results. These scores combine student results with the average Terrace QCS results over many past years. Scores are given within a band of two e.g. OP 4 to OP 6. These scores are given as part of a mentoring process to support and encourage boys to achieve their best possible outcomes.
Next term allows us to have final workshops in each of the papers within QCS. We will have a workshop on the Writing task that focuses on the responsiveness to the stimulus and workshops on the Short Response and Multiple choice papers. Many students will also receive individual feedback and advice on their most recent writing task. All being in preparation for the final papers on August 29 and 30. We are very proud of the achievements of our Seniors on their practice papers to date.
Finally, my thanks for all the support, commitment and encouragement that our families make to the education of their children. Your support is most appreciated and integral to allowing our boys to achieve their very best. I hope that the holidays allow for some relaxing family time.

As I reflect on Term 2, I am conscious that students are tired, having been pushed to meet their potential.
One aspect of a Terrace education that attracts parents is the fact that students are challenged and expectations are high. We know that we get the best out of young men when we ask a lot of them. As I reflect on Term 2, I am conscious that students are tired, having been pushed to meet their potential. In particular, students from Years 11 and 12 have experienced the most challenging term of their school lives. I trust they go into holidays content in the knowledge that they have performed in a way of which they can be proud. It is now time for a break before they come back to do it all again next term.
This Friday afternoon after school, the Term 2 sporting program concludes when our Firsts Football and Tennis teams are hosted by BBC. Despite the unusual timing, there is some enthusiasm amongst students about attending the event as spectators. It is wonderful that our students are keen to attend and give their support, especially as the Tennis players are chasing a premiership. We will run a bus to BBC after school on Friday, returning at full time of the Football; it is essential that students sign up for a seat on the bus at the College Sport Office. Those wishing to stay after this time to watch the Tennis will be required to find their own way home. Although the term will be finished, it is exceptionally important that spectators are dressed in full College uniform and that their conduct is exemplary – we need to see support that is positive and focussed on helping our players to perform at their best. All the very best to everyone involved.
As we come to the end of the term, I am excited by the fact that I will be taking some long-service leave for the first six weeks of Term 3. It will be a nice opportunity for my wife and I to do some travelling and attend to some neglected jobs around home. In my absence, Mr Damien Cuddihy will move from Waterford Place to act as Dean of Students. He will remain in the role for all of Term 3 and the first two weeks of Term 4 as I will be Acting College Dean on my return. I am very confident that Damien will do an excellent job and I encourage parents to contact him regarding any pastoral matters as the need arises during this time. His role at Waterford Place will be ably filled by Mr Mason Hellyer for this 12 week period. I wish these two important members of our pastoral team the very best as they take on these roles. Next term, we also welcome Mr Anthony Hayward back as Windsor House Dean. I thank Mr Anthony Baruksopulo for his efforts acting in this role; he did a wonderful job in leading the House. I look forward to my return in the second half of Term 3 and I wish all our families a restful time over the holidays.

Remember those Easter eggs?
Remember those Easter eggs? Remember the extra-long holiday we were blessed with because of Easter Monday? Since then, we have shared another term together as a Terrace Family. We’ve enjoyed long weekends, shorter days, Mother’s Day and the onset of winter. Furthermore, behind these happenings has been our shared Easter journey. If we pause for a moment and ponder more deeply, we might find that we’ve also received wonderful gifts.
Wisdom. Understanding. Knowledge. Good Judgment. Courage. Reverence. Awe. You won’t find these gifts on Amazon - they are far too valuable. At tomorrow’s Term 2 Thanksgiving Liturgy our students will consider how their mates, their family and their teachers have gifted these to them this term. Most importantly, we will take time tomorrow to recognise that when these gifts were received, or gifted to others, we see the Holy Spirit at play.
There are three large feasts commemorated by the Church. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are well known to all, believers and non-believers alike. But it is possible that Christians are not always as familiar with the third great feast, the festival of Pentecost - the great feast that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. We celebrated Pentecost almost two weeks ago with great joy and thanksgiving knowing that Jesus Christ left us with many gifts.
Each of us who have been baptised and confirmed have received these gifts. A gift is useless unless someone uses it. Pentecost is a good time, as is our end of term thanksgiving, to encourage ourselves to ask the Holy Spirit to help us make these gifts an important part of our lives.
Before setting off on your holiday or holiday routines, I hope you’re able to find time to recognise the gifts with which you’ve been blessed. I wish all members of our Terrace Family a safe and joy filled break and leave you with a simple prayer:

Years 7, 8 and 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman
I hope the boys have a well deserved holiday.
Students will be completing their exams by the time this article goes online. Many boys have shared their thoughts on where they are currently at with their preparation for assignments and exams. Year 7 students have had a larger number of assignments and a smaller number of exams. This can be challenging as the work comes home rather than the exam being completed in one time slot at school. The fact that many boys have not had homework or assignments mean that it can be a massive shift quite suddenly. The Heads of Faculty, Program Leaders and Dean of Studies work together very closely and regularly monitor this. The shifting of the new senior school system (where information is being shared one stage at a time) will also have some implications down throughout the year levels for how to best prepare our students. This is looking like there may be some less numbers of assessment pieces in some subjects and public exams in some others. This may prove to be a very good change for our students.
On the other hand, Year 8s had their assignments completed in good time but have a large number of exams, so this final week has been a very big one for them. Regardless, it always comes down to two main points.
1. Preparation, revising consistently throughout the term.
2. Planning ahead, that is, using time in class very effectively for assignments and working on them as soon as they are distributed.
The Term 3 Formation Programs are finalised. Whilst we always have a solid core of studies topics such as memory, planning a weekly routine, planning the term’s assessment, Terrace strategies to revising effectively, we have also reviewed the pastoral topics. This is very valuable time once per week where we can equip Terrace students with practical examples, advice and information about how to navigate the difficult teenage years. Some of these areas across Years7-9 for Term 3 include:
Year 7 | Self-esteem, growth mindsets/positive thinking, concentration, organisation.
Year 8 | Working together/teamwork, making a difference (Orange Sky case study), screen time and issues with too much of this.
Year 9 | Sleep/an area with much more information relating to students and their performance at school, seven habits of effective teenagers, leadership.
I hope the boys have a well deserved holiday, reflect on results, listen to the feedback that is provided, plan their term well and then have another go at Term 3, giving their very best efforts.

This July, 47 students and five staff from our Premier Ensembles will travel to the Ball State University to attend Summer workshops and clinics.
Terrace joining a 1300 Strong Music Camp in the USA
This July, 47 students and five staff from our Premier Ensembles will travel to the Ball State University to attend Summer workshops and clinics with 1300 of America's best high school musicians. This week long camp of 1300 students, 200 band directors and 150 faculty and is broken into different 'tracks' of study. Students will participate in Concert Band, Choral, Marching Band, Orchestral and Percussion workshops for the concert and marching idioms. The camp is facilitated by Music for All who are America's largest music advocate with a range of faculty who are undoubtedly the best of the best. Video auditions for this camp will be recorded next week to allow camp staff to place our musicians in the correct level of ensemble. The audition music is a level harder than we would be typically expect in Australia and we are looking forward to this challenge pushing us forward to our State Grand Finals – Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival.
After a challenging and educating week at the Music for All camp, the tour party heads to LA where our ensembles will do soundtrack workshops at Disneyland, the Marching Band will perform in a lunchtime parade at Disney and for the Huntington Beach 4th of July parade, the Choir will sing the national anthem at a LA Sparks game WNBA and a 4th of July community celebrations and the whole tour party performing at a stage in the Santa Monica precinct being the end of Route 66.

House Choir 2017
Friday 21 July will see the College come alive with House Choir 2017. This event will again feature an 'Eat Street' vibe outdoors with large screen and grass to kick back and watch the action. For those more intent on feeling the energy from the 1500 performers the inside precinct is your place. There are no reserving or booking seats so get in early for the best positions. The precinct will open from 5pm with the show beginning at 6.30pm. More information will be forthcoming in Term 3 | Week 1 Terrace News. See you there!

I hope the term is finishing off well for our musicians and I wish you all a restful holiday break before we launch into Term 3.
With exams out of the way, we will be spending the next week focusing on final preparations for the USA Music Tour. There have been some last-minute changes to the Holiday Rehearsal Schedule, due to a change in our Staff Week program, that will affect several of our holiday workshops and tour preparation activities. By the time of publication of this article, it is expected that all information will have been emailed out to parents and updated Event Memos will be available via the Terrace App. Please read through all the information carefully to ensure you are well acquainted with the latest schedule.
Of critical importance regarding the tour preparations is attendance for the Marching Band session on Monday. As indicated at the information evening and on the Event Memo, we are required to submit a new audition video to Disney as soon as possible. It is vital that we have all students involved arriving on time and well-prepared for this session on Monday. It will be a day of intense preparation and hard work but will reap great benefits.
Last week students and parents were sent information regarding audition requirements for the Music For All Summer Symposium to determine placements in the Concert Band and Orchestra. Students in the Marching Band and Percussion tracks will audition live at their first session on camp and students participating in the Choral track will not be required to audition. We will be having our music staff and some guest tutors in to assist with audition preparations. Again, filming needs to take place during this week and students are reminded to have all their correct gear to ensure this process runs smoothly.
Finally, I have posted two documents to the Terrace App outlining student involvement in the Music For All Summer Symposium (MFA) along with the groups they will be performing with post-MFA to clear up any confusion with boys performing in multiple ensembles.
I am looking forward to an exciting and awesome tour and know that our students are going to receive some excellent guidance and return to Terrace in Term 3 with a greater understanding and passion for their music studies.

1st IV TENNIS
The Premiership decider – the Terrace 1st IV are undefeated going into this final round playing at BBC this Friday evening.
After an outstanding season, the boys are well primed to display their talents against a strong opposition. The Terrace team is a very strong team, and regardless of their result on Friday night, have been outstanding ambassadors for the school this year. It has been a highlight all season to watch the way these boys have performed.
Well done boys on your season so far and good luck on Friday night.
1st XI FOOTBALL
This Friday afternoon at BBC, the 1st XI will play BBC in their final fixture of the season.
Thank you to all the Year 12 boys involved in the team for your efforts this season and the many years of service you have provided to the school, I am sure you have enjoyed your time.
Friday afternoon is an opportunity for the 1st XI to consolidate their season. A win on Friday evening will see them come equal 5th mid table. That is a step forward for the program and the College in this division. Good luck boys.
Congratulations to our young men who competed in the GPS Gymnastics Championships last weekend. It was a great way for the boys to finish off their season – with strong showings by all the boys involved.

Gymnastics works quietly behind the scenes, away from the fanfare, but with just as much effort, pride and commitment as all the other activities.
Thank you to all involved – I believe training for 2018 starts again in Term 3 – communication of this will be coming early Term 3 for all boys.
Terrace v TGS
Last weekend’s fixtures vs Toowoomba Gramma School, signalled the last opportunity for the full program of Football and Tennis to be in action for 2017.
The trip up the range to a brisk Toowoomba was successful for the majority of teams in Tennis with the Firsts and Seconds IV’s recording significantly strong victories.
The Football programs found the results a little more challenging with TGS providing strong opposition.
Regardless of results thank you to all boys and their families for participating in these two activities in 2017. I hope you have enjoyed your time.
Perhaps the only disappointing element to the Football season was the number of our young men who decided not to travel to Toowoomba on Saturday. Team mates were let down, the College was let down, the opposition was let down and I believe you let yourself down.
Representing the College is a privilege, not a right. Unfortunately, some young men did not see it that way on Saturday.

Term 2 | Tennis Wrap
The Terrace Tennis season of 2017 was completed on Saturday with an excellent day of tennis against Toowoomba Grammar School. The program, for the sixth occasion this year, had a winning day against the opposition. The sportsmanship on display was a credit to all involved.
The Terrace Tennis program caters for all abilities and the product of 2017 was definitely an improvement from the year before and we hope to continue this improvement in 2018. The aim is to continue to provide opportunities for those who either wish to play socially with their mates like this year’s 11D team in a participation program or to cater for those striving to be the best they can in the performance side of the program. Tennis is a game for all and a game for life.
Our traditional tennis end of season break-up BBQ, and trophy presentation at AMBI was held at the completion of the round on Saturday afternoon. This social event was well supported by the families involved with over 140 people in attendance. The award winners were for the following:

Term 2 A/B Program
Congratulations to all players and coaches involved in our Term 2 A/B program. It was pleasing to see a number of solid performances by our A/B squads against IGS last weekend. I am confident that our common approach to our core skill development, terminology and patterns of play across all age groups over the last nine weeks will lay a solid foundation for the boys to build from heading into the GPS competition.

Term 3 Tennyson Training Schedule

It’s a been a great season for Terrace Football, with the last games for all teams (except the 1st XI), producing a mixed bag of results on the weekend.
From the 5As through to the 1st XI, the teams that made the trip to Toowoomba Grammar School showed great respect and spirit both in victory and in defeat.
The 1st XI have achieved a remarkable improvement on previous years, our lads showing courage in every game. This was attributed to the leadership of captain Sam Lang, and Vice-Captains Max Mikkola and Darcy McCluskey. These three boys gave their all, both on and off the field, in their final year. I also wish the other Year 12 boys James Leech, Oscar Sullivan and Liam Lynch all the best. Thank you all for the great service to the Terrace Football Community. Good luck in your final game against BBC in Toowong on Friday at 3.30pm. All students are encouraged to attend and support the lads.
Buses have been arranged for the final 1st XI game at BBC and we ask as many of you to attend and send off the Year 12 players in style. I look forward to seeing you all there.
A special thank you goes to the Terrace 4th XI. These lads have been together for the past four years and have lost only one game in that time. They have been there week-in and week out playing football, attending training and supporting the 1st XI whenever they can. They have been led by three outstanding lads in James Freemantle, Tom Lawrence and Liam O’Donnell. On the weekend, these and a few others helped the 3rds and 2nds by playing three games in a row. The 2nds game was one of the proudest moments in Terrace Football history that I have experienced. The six boys that made it to Toowoomba and the others that helped almost got up with a win but through fatigue they fought for a 1-1 draw.
In another great story, the 7Hs were undefeated coming into Saturday’s round against Nudgee. They were playing a team three levels above them and at 1-0 down, with seconds to play, it looked like their perfect season was slipping away. One of the boys slotted a screamer from outside the box and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The Terrace and Nudgee coaches decided a penalty shoot-out was an appropriate way to decide the winner. The mighty Terrace 7H boys took it out 3-2. Well done.
The 2017 season has ended very well for Terrace. Feedback has been positive and we will continue to improve the program going forward.
Final thanks go to: The Terrace Football Support Group, coaches and volunteers a who have all helped immensely in making the boys’ experience playing ‘the world game’ so enjoyable. As we wrap up Term 2, we are looking forward to Term 3 as there are a few wonderful things planned.
TLG Meeting | 17 July, 9am GT125 | Mrs Julie Quinn Dean of Studies our Guest Speaker
Our next TLG meeting is to be at 9am on 17 July in GT125 and we are fortunate to have Mrs Julie Quinn, Dean of Studies as our guest speaker. Julie is going to be focusing on Year 12 matters – University Applications, OPs, the QCS program and parenting our boys in their final stages of schooling. While this is primarily a Senior topic, it would also be useful for parents of boys in the higher grades looking forward – or perhaps you may have senior daughters at other schools and would benefit from this information too. All are welcome to join us for morning tea in the Founders’ Room afterwards. Please email email@example.com to let her know if you will be attending for catering purposes.
Save the Date | 7 August –| Mothers Retreat
Be sure to put this wonderful morning of tai chi into your diaries where you will relax and relieve stress and anxiety with calming meditation in motion. We have two instructors from the Australian Academy of Tai Chi in New Farm coming to guide us in a group session under the jacarandas at Tennyson. Afterwards we will be serving a delicious range of fresh produce and cold pressed juices from Kiss the Berry, a business based at Southbank. A link for registering your attendance will be forwarded via an email closer to the day and the cost of attending will be $30 for the morning. No need to wear your active wear for this. Just comfortable clothes and footwear will do so you can easily go about your day afterwards feeling rejuvenated and revived.
Spring Luncheon | 1 September | Hillstone, St Lucia
Plans are advancing for the Ladies Spring Luncheon for 1 September at Hillstone, St Lucia. This is shaping up be a wonderful celebration of our Terrace community all around a beautiful Spring theme. Tickets will be $125 and include a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne on arrival (sponsored by SSKB Strata Managers) with canapés on the terrace, a sit down two-course meal with Riddle Range Sauvignon Blanc and Chateau De Brique “83” Rose on the tables. There will also be special drink prices, including Veuve Clicquot at $75 per bottle (usually $115) at the cash bar, great entertainment and raffle tickets to win amazing prizes.
To continue the festivities, Gambaro’s have provided a host of generous offers for us to enjoy at the end of the day. We have arranged a private charter of Council buses to get us there safely and in a timely fashion.
McKinney’s Jewellers have kindly offered a $5000 voucher towards our fundraising for the event. Thank you once again to McKinney’s for their generosity towards our TLG functions. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.
There are many other terrific prizes on offer also. Details of these will be available closer to the event. The covering letter accompanying the invitation will include a link to Try-Booking for your convenience. Seating arrangements are in tables of 10, so it is a good idea to start planning your tables and nominate a table captain. Rest assured that if you are a smaller group or purchasing as an individual, we will accommodate you within your preferred year level. Everyone is sure to have a great time.
