Dear members of the Terrace Family,

Last night the College hosted our newest Terracians and their parents at the Year 5 Orientation evening.  The Orientation is always a wonderful evening as the enthusiasm, raw emotion and excitement set the scene for the night.  Coupled with this, our Years 10 and 11 students begin their leadership journey as Buddies.  My thanks to the staff, TLG and others who ensured the evening was a success. 

Last Friday, the decision was made to cancel the Inter-House Track and Field Carnival.  The decision was not taken lightly, however, based on the information from the Bureau of Meteorology, the College needed to make a decision.  With 1700 students at Tennyson in the rain, and a possible morning thunderstorm (BOM Report), the safety of the students was paramount.  I am aware that many people were disappointed with the carnival being cancelled, myself included; however safety, practicality and current BOM information must inform the decision.  The busyness of Term 4 will, unfortunately, preclude the rescheduling of the carnival.

Over the past weeks, the process of selecting the College Leaders for 2020 has been occurring.  It is my pleasure to announce the following young men as our College Leaders for 2020.  They are fine young men both individually and as a group and will continue the legacy of strong student leadership that we have become accustomed to over the years.

Today the College participated in the Edmund Rice Foundation sponsored activity, the ‘Best Foot Forward Campaign’.  The program is designed to raise awareness about women’s rights to equal education and will be symbolised by the wearing of ‘pink shoelaces’.  It is incredibly important that as young men, Terrace Gentlemen are proactive in addressing all issues faced by women and are aware of these issues.  As brothers, sons, future husbands and fathers, the Terrace Gentlemen have a responsibility to help empower women through education. 

Finally this week, the Term 4 Assessment Calendars have been distributed to all students.  It is important that students across all year levels use this information to organise their assessment schedule for the term successfully.  The Assessment Calendars are also available via the College App.

Staff News

This week we have welcomed Mr Mark Chisholm to the staff as a member of our Sports Leadership Team. As one of our Activities Coordinators, Mr Chisholm will focus on athlete development across all programs and also oversee our strength and conditioning schedules.

Ms Helen Power will finish at the College this year as she has gained a teaching position at Somerville House. We will have the opportunity to thank and farewell her formally at the end of the year. 

Mrs Natalie Berndt will also take a year of leave next year as her family is relocating to Japan for a period. We wish Mrs Berndt well in this adventure.

Mr Andrew Ball will take Semester 1 as leave from the College next year. We wish Mr Ball well for this time also.

The College will advertise for several full-time continuing teaching positions this Saturday and is presently recruiting for a number of contract positions as indicated above.  This weekend will see positions advertised for teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and Design Technology and Economics and Business.

Finally, but most importantly, I was delighted to meet with Mr Mark Shori last week. Families of Years 11 and 12 students and Old Boys would particularly know Mr Shori as a member of our Waterford Place staff. Mr Shori has been acutely unwell for a year now. I can happily report that he has been out of hospital and at home for three weeks. He has a long way to go and some further procedures, but his positivity and resilience are shining through and we were meeting to begin to plan his transition back to some work in 2020. This discussion is a step by step and conservative one, but it is very pleasing to share this news about this good man and wonderful teacher.

One of the most important lessons I learnt as a young teacher was the importance of being prepared. Former Terrace parent, Mr Cliff Mallett, was my teaching supervisor when I completed my third year Physical Education practicum at St. Peter’s College, Indooroopilly. As well as being very nervous for my first secondary practical I had broken my ankle a few weeks prior and was on crutches for the entire six weeks. I made many mistakes, as student teachers do. However, I very quickly learnt that in order to be effective, I had to be prepared. Prepared with equipment, prepared with knowledge to answer student questions and prepared to adapt my lessons as I responded to student needs. An acronym that many adults are aware of is the 5Ps – Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

For students, this term’s challenge is its shortness. We are already at the end of the second week. Week 3 is also a four day week with the student free day on Monday. Consequently, it is imperative for students to be prepared and have set their academic goals for the term. In order to prevent poor performance at assessment time student will need to:

• Prepare their study timetable
• Plan how to use their study time effectively
• Plan how they will work toward their assignment due dates
• Set their academic goals for the term
• Prepare to work hard

Ultimately, it is up to each student to take responsibility for their own learning. However, the College is here to work with each student on their academic journey. There are a number of initiatives that students can access to assist with their study:
• Assessment calendars have been distributed to students to assist with their planning.

• Staff tutoring is offered to students by our generous staff. The staff tutoring list can be found on the College App.

• Study Group is available to Years 11 and 12 students only every afternoon in room 5.15 from 3.15-5.30pm. 

Much of the feedback we receive from past students who have achieved well academically is that academic success comes about through consistent work over a long period of time. It does not happen by chance.  Embrace the 5Ps!

Thank you for the way in which the boys returned for the start of Term 4. It was obvious that you played a significant role in making sure they returned to school for the final term well-presented and in the right frame of mind. It is a partnership that ensures we continue to work together to attain the best outcomes for your son/s. 

Unfortunately, we will not be rescheduling the Inter-House Track and Field Carnival this year due to the inclement weather last week. Many thanks to the parents who were prepared to assist with the running of the day. I realise this is the second year in a row that we have cancelled the event based on a forecast of rain. It is a decision that is not made lightly and will often result in conservative action taken for the wider community.  However, a group of students from Reidy House were able to go ahead with their annual “Rough Night In” at Waterford Place on Saturday night. Social workers from Brisbane Youth Services joined the boys during the evening to speak about the organisation. It was great to see a large number of Year 11 students assisting Mr Johnson with running the event. 

Dr Paul Gibney presented to Year 9 parents on Tuesday night on the topic Adolescent Boys, Parents and Families: Towards a Mature Masculinity. Paul has been presenting to our Year 9 cohorts for several years and provides a valuable insight into adolescent life. One aspect of the presentation focus is to embrace your son’s 'second family' - his friendship group. This could include the boys in his House group, rowing crew, debating team or handball group. I have shared this before but I find the following reflection from Jordan Peterson (2018) particularly insightful.

The infant is dependent on his parents for almost everything he needs. The child – the successful child – can leave his parents, at least temporarily, and make friends.  He gives up a little of himself to do that, but gains much in return.  The successful adolescent must take that process to its logical conclusion. He has to leave his parents and become like everyone else.  He has to integrate with the group so he can transcend his childhood dependency.  Once integrated, the successful adult then must learn how to be just the right amount different from everyone else.

Finally, a number of our Year 10 students had the opportunity to meet their new Buddies for 2020 at the Year 5 Orientation evening last night. As usual, I was immensely proud of the way in which the boys conducted themselves and engaged with the newest members of our community. Term 4 can sometimes be a term when boys lose focus as the end of the year draws near. If you are concerned about your son with regards to this, please make contact with his House Dean. 

This term, we continue our journey of understanding the line from Micah – to love tenderly, act justly, and walk humbly with our God. As members of the Terrace Family, we are called to be present in voice and action to all in our community and beyond.

The start of Term 4 has given us a chance, through the Edmund Rice Foundation, to connect to the Best Foot Forward project. Here in Australia, we take for granted the access to education afforded to us and the opportunities this education provides, such as the ability to reach our full potential as an individual or to gain meaningful employment to provide for ourselves. The Best Foot Forward project is centred around bringing awareness to the lack of education and training for women in developing nations. As part of this project, we have been selling pink shoelaces as a sign of solidarity, with the funds raised going towards education and training programs for women to assist them in creating employment and business opportunities. 

We hope that this small gesture of solidarity with other EREA schools raises necessary funds for these projects, we hope that our Terrace Gentlemen have a greater appreciation of the opportunities they have and hear the call to learn how to be agents of change in our local community.

At College Assembly on Tuesday, Thomas Musgrave (Year 9 Reidy) and Thomas Noonan (Year 9 Treacy) called on the Terrace community to support this important project and concluded with this prayer:

Dear God,
We ask for justice and dignity for those who are disadvantaged and unable to receive an opportunity to education that we are fortunate to receive.
As Catholics in the Edmund Rice tradition, we are called to challenge ourselves in putting our best foot forward to help, guide and act justly to all. Not just to those in our local communities, but also wider communities, that they too will not be forgotten. 
We ask that we stand together in solidarity to ensure that we continue to provide help to others who have not received the same opportunities as us.
We also give thanks to those special people in all of our lives, those whose decisions and actions have helped provide each of us an opportunity to learn and to help shape us into the people we are today.
Live Jesus in our hearts…forever.

Australian Honours Ensemble Program

Last week I had the honour of rehearsing and performing with the wind ensemble within the Australian Honours Ensemble Program.  The rehearsals ran for eight hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with conductor David Law keeping the long sessions interesting.  The pieces chosen for the final concert to be held at the Conservatorium Theatre were An Original Suite by Gordon Jacob, Gumsuckers March by Percy Grainger, and Paprikash by Julie Giroux.  The difficult repertoire proved to be a fantastic challenge for the wind ensemble, and the performance was very fulfilling and enjoyable.  Many thanks to the Terrace Music department for supporting my application for this wonderful experience.

Junior QDU Debating 

With the Junior QDU round for Year 5 and Year 6 moved to tonight, we wish these young debating Terracians all the very best for their last debate of the season and the year.  

Our results with the younger students are certainly proving we are on the right path with our Debating program.  We look forward to reporting a clean sweep for the 5.1 team who have thus far won all their debates.

Welcome to Week 2  

A perusal of the calendar dates below will show that we have a number of engagements in Term 4. Please consult the College App for more details as they come to hand, and please respond promptly to invites sent to the Parent Lounge.

A crucial component in managing performances and sending out information is through the Parent Lounge. Can I ask that families respond to requests in Parent Lounge promptly? This provides us with rolls and information so as to best manage equipment, personnel and transport.

Music Practice Hall

A new initiative, Music Practice Hall was rolled out for Wind, Brass, Percussion and Strings on Monday.  We have had a fair turnout this time around. This is held in the Music Centre, from 3.15-5pm on Mondays. Please note that next week is a pupil free day, so we will recommence on Monday 29 October. I ask that you actively support this so that we can roll it out more fully next year and support the boys in attaining quality practice habits.

For those students who are working towards AMEB exams, a reminder that Music Practice Hall on Monday afternoons 3.15-5pm is an excellent opportunity to work on your pieces and receive assistance with the aural component of the exam.

With only three weeks left in my Terrace journey, I have often found myself reflecting on my time at Terrace. I have found myself drifting off in class and thinking about some of the best moments I have had here. 

While some of the memories I have been reflecting upon have been big moments in my Terrace journey, such as Kairos or my very first day, most of the memories I have been looking back on have been much smaller. They have been the moments we see regularly, moments I had no idea I would cherish so much. They have been as simple as the final call of Terrace before running out through the tunnel to play a game or even sitting in class while everyone is in stitches laughing from a little comment someone made. To me, this is what makes Terrace great. A school that can create spontaneous memories like these is not just a school, but a home away from home. If I have one final piece of advice, it would be to treasure every single one of these moments. These are the moments that will shape the man you become and will have the greatest impact on who you are as you walk out the front gates for the last time. And, once you have walked out the gates, it will be those moments you miss the most. Your Terrace journey will not be defined by the mark you get at the end of Year 12 or a small number of large events. It will be defined by the little moments; the ones you might not think you will ever look back on. But I promise you, when you get to the position that the Senior cohort of 2019 is in right now, you will be looking back upon them fondly, and hoping to experience many more before you leave.

 I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me on my journey here at Terrace. Thank you to my teachers for the countless hours of effort you put in and your endless support. Terrace would not be the school it is without dedicated staff who are always looking to help every student be their best not just in academics but in every aspect of life. A huge thank you must also be given to all the parents at the College. We would all be lost without you and would not be able to do half of what we do if it not for your constant support. Finally, I would like to thank all of the young men who make up our student body. Every single one of you brings something unique to Terrace and makes it the inclusive, spirited and vibrant community it is. I am so grateful to have been a part of it.

TLG AGM – do you know someone who would love to join the team?

Monday 28 October will see the TLG AGM take place. This year, our Vice Presidents of Hospitality, Treasurer and Secretary will be retiring after two years of dedicated service. If you would like to consider taking on an official committee role or know someone who would be perfect, please read the role details below. If you have any questions, please send me an email. Please note: All retiring committee members will mentor the new office bearers through their first year. 

Vice President/s (Hospitality) 

This role is more suited to being shared by two or more people.

The VP (Hospitality) is the first port of call for all events requiring the traditional TLG hospitality. Assistance for larger events is supported by volunteers. Duties include: 

• Coordinate and manage all the hospitality at TLG functions (e.g. Masses, welcome morning teas, information evenings and orientation evenings).
• Order breakfasts for TLG meetings. 
• Coordinate, order and manage the Track and Field Carnival. 
• Coordinate and manage the Staff Christmas lunch.

Treasurer

The Treasurer ensures a familiarity with the TLG accounts, having regular communication with the relevant officer in the Finance Department. You do not have to be an accountant to fill this role. Duties include: 

• Oversee TLG Accounts. 
• Be familiar with the TLG accounts spreadsheet through the Finance Office and income/outcome.
• Approve all payments and invoices - with the joint endorsement of the President or the VP (Logistics). 
• Provide a report to the TLG meeting with a summary of income and expenses for the period leading up to then, and projected cost expectations. 
• Organise floats and banking for the Tennyson canteen and other events requiring these supplies.

Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for ensuring all formal communications are carried out in an efficient and timely manner. 

• Manage the TLG database. 
• Manage the TLG email account for Volunteer sign-on pages ensuring future access and a consistent approach. 
• Send out correspondence relating to TLG matters. 
• Record, manage and distribute the minutes of TLG meetings. 
• Assist the President with the Terrace News TLG segment. 
• Liaise with Dean of Communication. 

Girls Night Out – postponed until February 2020

Regrettably due to a calendar clash we have postponed the ‘Girls Night Out’ until Saturday 22 February 2020. Full refunds will be given to all those who have purchased tickets. They will be processed as soon as possible, but there will be some delay as the College retrieves the funds from Trybooking, then refunds you. Thank you in anticipation of your patience.

We do apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. The TLG is aware that networking and bonding is very important – it is a good way to share what is going on in each year with each child, and to learn from one another about how to parent boys. We have set the date for next year - please save it in your calendar as a date claimer now.

Parent Volunteering in the Terrace Shop

During Term 4 we are welcoming our newest students to the Terrace Family and we need your help! We would love the assistance of current parents in the shop as each new student is fitted out in his Terrace uniform.

It is a lovely tradition to have current parents volunteer in the shop during this time. It gives new families an opportunity to meet other parents and ask those everyday questions in a friendly and welcoming environment.

It doesn’t matter if you have not volunteered with us before – we warmly welcome everyone! We will be here to help you and will give you a quick cheat sheet for the fitting process.

We will attend to the uniform fittings from Week 1 Term 4 -  Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8.30am to 2.45pm. On 29 and 31 October, we will need assistance until 5pm. There are two families booked at a time, therefore we need two volunteers for each fitting.
