Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

I was very proud to be part of the Terrace Family last Saturday at Tennyson. The sea of red and black that flooded the grounds was complemented by the tinge of green supporting spinal awareness.  My thanks to all who were involved in making the day so successful.  My thanks also to the ‘Green Army’ who coordinated the spinal awareness and Para START campaign. The day was an extraordinary display of Terrace Spirit.  Thank you and well done.

This week is a significant week with House Choir being staged on Friday night at the Pat Rafter Arena.  This will be another great display of community spirit.  Communications have been sent regarding various aspects of the night, so I do ask that you make yourself familiar with this information.  There will be food outlets available before the concert with the show beginning at 6.30pm.  As this is a public venue, issues such as parking become more significant.  As previously communicated, the main parking areas will be the Brisbane Golf Club Carpark, via Walker Street, and our own parking area at Tennyson, as well as on-street parking.  There will be shuttle services from both parking venues and they will be doing return shuttles for one hour after the conclusion of the show.  Shuttles will commence at both parking venues from 4.30pm with the last leaving the King Arthur Terrace bus stop at approximately 9.30pm.  There is very limited parking at the Tennis Centre due to public access and some reserved parking. There will be signs and traffic management staff coordinating the parking.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and I look forward to a wonderful evening.

The first week of Parent/Teacher/Student interviews took place on Wednesday.  Again, a strong sense of partnership was very evident.  I wish to acknowledge and thank our dedicated teaching staff for the way they nurture your sons’ learning and work so closely with you.  They are a special group of teachers.

Next week Winterfest will be launched and will showcase many aspects of the College’s Arts Program.  The official opening will be staged in College Hall on Friday 10 August at 6pm.  I would encourage you to come along to view the range of talent that exists in this area of the College.

The term is now in full swing, so it is important that all students have settled into a consistent homework and study routine.  There is a lot happening for the students and the temptation is to get ‘caught up’ in the busyness.  Organisation and focus are key.

Finally this week, I ask that you keep Br Fergus Gagen in your thoughts and prayers.  Br Gagen was a former staff member at Terrace and lived at Terrace for many years.  He is unwell at the moment.

Thank you for all that you do.

God Bless,
Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

Supporting Conor Tweedy

As you are aware, Conor Tweedy (Year 11, Kearney House) was injured in a scrum collapse during a recent GPS Rugby match.  The collapse caused a fracture dislocation and spinal cord injury at C4-C5, resulting in weakness and paralysis of the muscles in the arms and legs as well as those required for breathing.  Conor is a talented 16 year-old sportsman whose life has changed forever.

Conor, his parents Bec and Sean Tweedy, and his siblings Georgina and Seamus, are all extraordinarily grateful for the support received from the Terrace Family. The prayers, kind words, meals, donations and other kindnesses have helped them through the hardest time of their lives.

Conor’s injury is very serious. His youth, strength and determination have helped him to cope with the injury and will be critical for recovery.  But that will not be enough.  The best management and optimal outcomes require significant funding for equipment, therapy, and personal support.

Asking for support like this doesn’t come easily or naturally for us, but Conor is our boy and, as we cannot take away the tough journey that’s in front of him, we want to do everything that we can to help him be as good as he can be - Sean Tweedy (Conor’s Dad)

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

This week is Catholic Education Week. Every Monday, the teaching staff gathers for a brief meeting to prepare for the week. Ms Emma Hatchett, our Drama Coordinator, led prayer and this is what she shared, which I thought was a great way to start the week.

Plant three rows of peas:
Peace of mind
Peace of heart
Peace of soul
Plant three rows of squash:
Squash indifference
Squash selfishness
Squash hate
Plant three rows of lettuce:
Lettuce be kind
Lettuce love one another
Lettuce grow our own food
Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.
There is so much fruit in your garden because you reap what you sow.

A new tradition that we launched this week on assembly for Catholic Education Week is to thank and acknowledge teachers and school officers of Terrace who have worked within our community for 20 or more years. This extraordinary group of people have over 500 years of collective Terrace experience and wisdom and have contributed inside and outside of the classroom to the lives of thousands of Terracians and colleagues. I said on assembly that I think it is fair to say that it is getting harder and harder to be a teacher or school officer in our schools in Australia and perhaps even more challenging within a Catholic context. These people, along with our other staff, give generously to the building up of our mission to serve and form the young men of Terrace to know that living a life for love, justice and peace is indeed wise. We give thanks for our long serving staff this Catholic Education Week.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

Last week , Mr Coman, Program Leader for Years 7, 8 and 9, and I met with students who had made significant academic improvements across Term 1 to Term 2. It was a privilege to meet over lunch with these boys where we shared the strategies they used for their improvement. These strategies are listed below and reflect the determination and discipline that they committed to in making significant gains. Well done to these boys who have shown this initiative and now have these skills for life’s learnings.

Reflections from the most improved students in Years 7, 8 and 9

  • Extra effort
  • Use of diary
  • Use of term planner and put it on wall
  • More notes in class and revised these notes
  • Attended tutoring
  • More focused – withdrew distractors
  • Made sure understood topics
  • More attention in class
  • Focus on formation; moved to front of class
  • Peer group motivation
  • Use of study plan; used checklist
  • Started assignments early
  • Set out weekly routine; use of checklists
  • Checklist booklet – filled it all
  • Balanced time on subjects
  • Brother and sister asked questions; Friday roll call
  • Each night wrote down daily learnings
  • Paid more attention in class
  • Use of study planner
  • Use of checklist

Parent/Teacher/Student interviews

My thanks again to the substantial number of parents who attend the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews. With our final formal round of interviews concluding next week, many students have now been given information on how to sustain or enhance their outcomes. It is a wonderful opportunity to gain strategies for the term ahead and to revise strategies that were successful and strategies that need to be addressed moving forward into Term 3. This partnership between school and home is greatly valued by all our teaching staff.

Support for parents.

Parents are able to access the Checklists on Moodle by following this link (just in case your sons forgot to show you their checklist)- http://moodle.terrace.qld.edu....

Quarter time mark

As we approach the end of Week 3, I remind all boys that we are at the quarter time mark for teaching and learning for this term. With many boys having exams in Week 9, they need to be aware of the work that is to be completed prior to this time.
I offer the checklist below for students to complete to ensure that they are organised and making the most of their time.

  • Completed a study plan that outlines when my assignments are due and when I am going to do revision for my exams.
  • Noted on the study plan the time and topics/exercises that I am intending to spend on each subject for both assignments and revision, where applicable.
  • Completed Friday roll call for the past two weeks.
  • Logged my hours and they are consistent with the required hours to maximise my outcomes.
  • Asked my teacher questions to clarify concepts that I have not understood.
  • Downloaded from Moodle the checklist for every subject that outlines what I need to know for exams this term.
  • Pasted the checklist into a book and am pretending that the checklist is an exam and I am methodically working my way through the list and checking that I know what is listed.
  • Made use of the resources at Terrace and attended tutorials where required.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

Last week, I attended an EREA network day, which was an opportunity for pastoral leaders from across our schools to gather and share ideas about best practice in pastoral care.  I was taken by the opening presentation from Professor Denis McLaughlin, Australia’s clear authority on Edmund Rice’s story.  Professor McLaughlin shared a quote from an Irish school inspector who was commenting on the early Christian Brothers’ schools in 1854:

‘The superiority of these schools is, doubtless, in a great measure, to be ascribed to the extraordinary personal interest exerted by the teachers over the pupils….’

What a fitting quote in Catholic Education Week, a week in which we celebrate the enormous impact of the great privilege that is an education at a school such as ours.  At Terrace, we have in excess of 20 staff who have given more than 20 years of service to our school, an incredible example of the dedication so many show to this vocation.  Central to our pastoral care system are the teaching and non-teaching staff who devote themselves to the wellbeing of the students.

Adolescents’ sleeping habits are an increasing area of educational interest as there are direct links between sleep, wellbeing and performance, in and out of the classroom.  Last week, students from Years 7 and 10 were presented with information and tips about developing good sleeping habits.  Some of the tips shared were:

  • Make sleep a high priority by having a set bedtime and sticking to it.
  • Keep electronic devices out of the bedroom.
  • Have a 60 minute break between the use of screens and going to bed.  This helps to prepare for sleep.
  • Train yourself to use the bed for sleep only – if it is a place for screens and other activities, the brain doesn’t recognise that sleep is the priority.
  • Exercise regularly, but not too close to bed time as this can make it hard to settle.
  • Limit the weekend sleep in to one hour.  If more sleep is needed on the weekend, it is a sign that there is not enough sleep during the week.
  • If a nap is really required, limit it to 20 minutes so you can still sleep at night.

On Friday evening, the annual House Choir competition will make its first appearance at Pat Rafter Arena.  We are excited about this fantastic venue and we look forward to another amazing community event.  I would recommend allowing plenty of time to arrive and park as the roads will be busy.  Please see communication from the College regarding transport and parking.  Individual Houses have also communicated home about arrival times and any costume requirements.  We look forward to a strong attendance from students and the wider community at the biggest House event of the year.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

A Snapshot of Identity

They say a picture says a thousand words. Rather than sharing a written synopsis of the latest updates, challenges and future possibilities of our Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) network, I though I would enlighten you through an illustration. The below illustration was generated whilst Dr Wayne Tinsey – EREA Executive Director presented to our national Identity conference with respect to four key topics; A fully functioning EREA, the core mission of EREA, evolving the mission of EREA and embedding the mission of EREA into our school communities.

I encourage you to use the zoom function of your electronic device to explore the key messages of Wayne Tinsey. A key message within the illustration that continues to resonate with me is the need to being courageous with continually pushing the boundaries of exploring what is possible as a network of national school communities commited to being stewards of the Edmund Rice tradition.

  • What captures your attention in the below illustration?
  • What do you find energising?
  • What challenges you?

Years 7, 8 and 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman

Our Year 7s recently listened to Lisa Maltman from the ‘Sleep Connection’ who gave some very good information and advice that centred around a few main areas:

  • Students need 8-10 hours sleep.
  • Technology and exercise should be avoided 30-60min before sleep.
  • Phones should be off and not used as alarm due to students being woken by texts during important sleep cycles.

Across Years 7-9 Formation lessons we start each term with a reflection on previous results, goal setting for the term ahead and planning of the term’s weekly routine at home around assessment items. Whilst the bulk of this planning should be done in Formation students may need extra time to complete this themselves.  The important step from here is that these plans are transferred from school to home. Each student should have a planner with this information up in their room at home.

Our Formation program then starts to look at topics such as:

Year 7- Online safety, digital footprint, privacy online

Year 8 - Screen time and the issues associated with this

Years 7-9 - Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers (Stephen and Sean Covey’s work)

The three elements of homework/assignments/revision should be happening each week at home to complement what is learnt in the classroom. Revision should be written in the Checklist Booklet, so students can quantify the preparation that they have completed.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The careers course that the boys have been undertaking in Formation classes for the past six school weeks is drawing to a close with the upcoming Year 11 Subject Selection Evening and subsequent interviews with the College’s Head of Faculty staff over the next fortnight. A subject selection booklet has been given to each boy during the week. This booklet contains the relevant information about the subjects on offer in Years 11 and 12 for your son. It would be beneficial to spend some time reviewing the various course outlines prior to the information evening commencing at 6pm in the Campbell Centre on Monday night. The individual subject selection interviews start on Wednesday next week and all students need to have made their selections through the online link sent via email to each student’s school account. Parents are more than welcome to attend these meetings but the timing of this meeting is unfortunately not flexible.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

GPS Chess

Well done to the Chess team who again won this week in Round 2 vs Nudgee College. Our Premier Board had a strong win 2.5 – 1.5 with the rest of the teams reporting six wins, three draws and one loss.
Round 3 vs Brisbane State High School will be held on Thursday afternoon due to House Choir. Please look out for details from Chess Coordinator Mr Liam Herne.

Debating dinner

Thank you to the families and students who attended the 2018 Debating Dinner. It was a very fitting event to celebrate the success and participation of these students. This year the event was held at Victoria Park Golf Club and featured Most Improved awards for students in each year level. We look forward to handing out the awards for the most outstanding debaters at Celebration of Excellence.

Thank you to the staff and DSG members who were integral to the success of this event.

Theatresports

Congratulations to our Senior 1 team who progressed through the quarter finals of the Youth Theatresports competition.
This team - Luke Allen, Aidan Kelly, Max Schroder, Guy Stephen, Christopher Thorpe and Tom Woodrow – now progress to the semi finals.

Best of luck to our Senior 2 team who compete next Monday night at Padua College.

Upcoming performances

There are many performances, representation and competitions in the upcoming week. Good luck to the Red Thunder Drumline and First Percussion Ensemble who compete in the Australian Percussion and Drumline Eisteddfod, the 35 boys who will represent Terrace at the Junior Music Day of Excellence on Tuesday and our String Department who have a String Showcase on Wednesday.

Tours

As mentioned briefly last week, we have listed the upcoming tours on the App.  There will be opportunities for many of our students to participate in tours up to 2023!
We will be undertaking two tours in 2019 involving separate groups.  The Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Big Bands will tour to Singapore in the June/July College holiday.  The September holidays will see the Choir and Waterford Soloists touring to Europe.
The Music Department are currently working on the Ensembles for next year.  When these lists are finalised, students will be invited to participate in the tours.

House Choir

Please ensure you have read the information from the Communication office regarding car parking for Friday night’s House Choir event.  This information is available via the App and on the College Facebook page.  It is important you allow yourself plenty of time to park and move to the Pat Rafter Arena.  There will be a variety of food trucks at the venue – starting from 5pm.

We look forward to once again hosting this entire College event and encourage families to join us for the evening.
Please use our social media accounts to tag us when you post photos from the evening.

We urgently require volunteers to help on Friday night.  If you can please give 30 minutes of your time, follow this link and choose a time that suits your family:  https://www.volunteersignup.or...

Director of Music | Acting Director, Mr Jan Hewerdine

Congratulations to the Red Thunder Drumline and WWRY band and cast who performed an amazing reprise from the College musical at the Rugby last Saturday at Tennyson.

Congratulations also to the Terrace Youth Choir, under the direction of Mrs Bernadette Debattista, for their performance on Assembly this week. Next week, the Waterford String Quartet, under the direction of Ms Amy Phillips, will perform on College Assembly for the Academic Medals Assembly.

Tomorrow the College is holding its House Choir Night at Pat Rafter Arena. Traditionally held at the College, the Tennis Centre, with its tiered amphitheatre, corporate box seating options and state of the art audio/visual connectivity will certainly open up the production values of this great event.

On Tuesday 7 August, 33 of our younger musicians will be representing Terrace at the GPS Music Day of Excellence (Years 5-7) which will take place at Nudgee College. Music has been distributed to teachers, and students are encouraged to begin working on their music to ensure that they get the most out of this day. It is always an exciting and inspiring experience for our younger players. A bus will be departing from Terrace at 7.45am. The boys will need to be collected by parents from Nudgee College after the 6.00-7.15pm free concert. Please see the College App for more details.

Wednesday 8 August our String Showcase will be held in the Edmund Rice Theatre, Waterford Place. Arrival time is 5.30pm for a 6pm performance. Please see the College App for more details.

All our ensembles will be focusing on preparations for the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF), which will take place at Villanova College from Thursday 16 August through to Sunday 19 August. This is our “grand final” event for music and as such, it is expected that these performances take priority. Please ensure that music is being practised at home and that rehearsals are regularly attended. Parent Lounge notifications and Event Memos have been posted quite some time back. We would appreciate prompt responses to assist us in the logistical preparations for such a large event. A Music Presentation Assembly will take place at the College on Thursday 16 August, just prior to QCMF.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events (see the list below) will now be published. As events are approved and posted to the Parent Lounge, you will be sent an email advising the name of the event, including the Event Memo, to check and you will be required to give a response regarding attendance. Event Memos will also be available through the Terrace App in Culture| Music.

Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

Thank you to everybody that was part of the day last Saturday in Basketball and Rugby against Nudgee. It was an exceptionally busy day across all the courts and fields, with both the programs in full swing.

The performances of the boys were outstanding with great spirit and commitment shown. The palpable passion for representing the Red and Black heightened to fever pitch when facing our brother school Nudgee College. The contests bring out the best in both schools and observers walked away from both the main court at Spring Hill and the fields at Tennyson amazed at what they witnessed.

In Basketball the Terrace program was successful across the board winning 27 of the 39 fixtures – a dominant performance. The standard of Basketball played was outstanding – the level of competence and skill level has improved significantly over the years. Well done to all involved in this activity from the supporting parents to the hard working students and the committed coaches.  Special mention to the senior coaching staff, Mr Sam Mackinnon, Mr Henry Mahoney and Mr Matthew Hamilton-Smith.

The Terrace 1st V started slowly but rallied strongly to storm home victors by 30 points. This is a great victory by a very talented side that faces a strong challenge this weekend against BSHS.

In Rugby, the Tennyson facility was awash with colour as the facility was at full capacity hosting all the Terrace teams. Games were played in good spirit with all boys relishing the contest. The day recognises an Old Boys' Cup for the Rugby program and Nudgee were successful in winning 20 of the 36 games with Terrace winning 14 with 2 draws. That is a great result across all the teams – a winning percentage of 40% is the best result in recent years. There will be no greater challenge for the program than the Nudgee day and the results from that day are very pleasing. Thanks to the boys and their parents for their commitment and desire to represent the College, as well as the coaches who give so tirelessly investing their time and energy in improving the players.

The 1st XV played passionately to lead at the half time break by one point but gifting two intercepts and not converting a number of chances in that first half came back to bite them in the second half.  In the end, the Nudgee team ran out worthy winners with too much strike power across the board. The team should be very proud of their efforts - as should the ENORMOUS crowd that was on hand at the game.

Thank you to all that made the days at both the Basketball and Rugby so successful – the Terrace community was outstanding in their support. The number of boys in attendance that stayed behind or made an effort to travel to Tennyson was simply incredible, personally I have never seen so many boys in attendance.

This week the Terrace Basketball and Rugby programs will play BSHS who will turn out significantly fewer numbers of teams in both programs. Where last week was compact and smooth regarding a much smaller number of venues and locations, this week will see Basketball and Rugby players at multiple venues across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The driving factor at all times is to give boys the opportunity to play, therefore games are vitally important. Thank you to those families that will travel to various fields and courts this weekend.

Round 4 against ACGS is a Home fixture where all fixtures will again come together at Tennyson.  This coincides with our Back to Tennyson Old Boy round.

Good luck to all the boys this weekend in their fixtures and games – keep building on the good work achieved so far this year.

The Weekly Wrap

Basketball Wrap

Round 2 of the GPS season proved to be a dominant performance by Terrace Basketball against our old rival, Nudgee College. The program, as a whole, won more than 65% of its games. This was headlined by strong performances in year group A games where Terrace was 7 wins from 8 (87.5%) and additionally was 6 from 8 (75%) in age group B games. Through two weeks of the season Terrace teams have won a cumulative 64% of GPS games contested and have had winning percentages against both BBC and Nudgee.  Congratulations to the hard working students and coaches within the program who have made this success possible.

The 1st V faced a very determined and hardworking Nudgee College outfit. Nudgee came out firing early and after the hot start, took a 32-20 first quarter lead. Terrace fought their way back into the game by picking away at the lead, a staunch defensive effort on the second quarter left the Terrace 1st V down 45-39 at the half, but in with a good chance in the second half. A strong third quarter performance helped build a Terrace lead but it was the fourth quarter shooting and offensive performance that was most impressive, with the group scoring 40 points in the final exchange to run out 30 point victors 104-74.

We look forward to the upcoming round of games against Brisbane State High, a traditionally tough basketball opponent, and hope we can build on the success of the program so far.

Good luck to all in Rugby and Chess this weekend in their fixtures.

Rugby Wrap

Tennyson was at its very best last weekend in hosting Round 2 of the GPS Rugby competition against Nudgee. Thanks to everyone who made the day a success, and in particular our Tennyson Director Mr Alan Kennedy and his staff for preparing the fields. Special thanks to the Rugby Support Group and all the parents who generously gave up their time to assist in the BBQ Pit and Canteen. Without the help of these people, the best game day experience would not be possible. I encourage all families to assist when possible.

For a fourth year running Nudgee College won the St Joseph’s College Cup, recording 20 wins, two draws and 14 losses against us.  I think that it’s fair to say that both schools run two of the largest programs in the nation. Ensuring boys get regular games across all age groups requires a huge amount of time, effort and support from both schools.

A special thanks to Mr Cocking and the boys for the half time entertainment which was enjoyed by all.

Weekend results can be found by clicking on the GPS Rugby link below. This will give you access to all results across all school and age groups. Please note that the 1st XV competition is the only grade that plays for a premiership.

Our program is built upon a sound philosophy of educating and developing our coaches creating a standard of knowledge and understanding.  Our C – F teams are primarily coached by Old Boys who generously give up their time to coach our boys. Once again, this season we are fortunate to have the service of Mr Michael Broad, Mr Tom Johnson and Mr John Tabrett who are level 3 and 2 coaches respectively. The role of these three gentlemen is to support the young coaches while ensuring consistency of skill execution, terminology and performance leading to a whole school approach across all our C-F teams.

Congratulations to the following boys who represented Met Nth at the recent Under 15 State Carnival, Devin Pule’anga(Year 10), Riley Tillotson (Year 9) and Jonathan van Aswegen (Year 10).

From week to week our lower graded teams are drawn to play other schools higher graded teams and it is always very rewarding for these teams to outplay their opposition. On many occasions these teams are asked to travel away from where the rest of the school is playing so I would like to thank all boys and their families for their understanding.

A weekly Terrace Team Man is selected by the coaching staff during the GPS season. This is in recognition of any player who makes an outstanding contribution to their team both at training and in a game. Congratulations to the below boys on their selection.

All the very best to all teams heading into Round 3.

Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Tom Pappalardo

Opening my inbox yesterday afternoon (I'm a notoriously infrequent checker of emails), I was met with instantaneous panic, yet again familiar territory, of forgetting to send in my Captains’ Corner for the week. Apologies Ms Anderson, I will be more organised next time…

As Tom Dearlove would proudly quote:  every major sporting event requires the build up phase, and then the aftermath and reflection phase. If I was to stick true to Tom’s wise words, I would be beginning to reflect on what was a hard fought, but ultimately a losing game against Nudgee on the weekend. Tom, nothing personal, but I am going to venture into uncharted territory this week.

What could possibly be more exciting or relevant than a reflection of a Terrace Vs Nudgee Rugby game you may ask? Well, for those of you who have eagerly been waiting to read my latest contribution to the Terrace newsletter (Hi Mum!), I have a surprise in store for you. My story begins here:

In need of a few Senior students to complete the makeup of the Terrace Chess program, Harry Watt and I thought it would be a good idea to put our names down and give it a go. If I was to sugar coat our chess abilities, I would say we are bad – like really bad. Anyway, I began my game and four moves later (who knew a chess game could finish that quickly), I found myself a free man able to wander around the chess boards and attempt to fit in with the rest of the crowd - pretending to insightfully ponder the situation of the games at hand.

Watching our premier team play, and many of the younger boys as well, I was amazed to see the level of concentration and intensity on display. Contemplating for periods of up to 10 minutes between moves, I had become exposed to a side of this school I had never seen. Wen Zhang, when he’s not achieving extraordinary mathematical achievements or more importantly, programming his newly designed website providing a precise countdown until the next ring of the school bell (invention of the century), he is taking it to his chess opponents and in this instance, narrowly beating his Nudgee counterpart with less than five minutes left on the clock. Whether it was merely a coincidence, or maybe even divine intervention, I am glad I have discovered a new community within the school and have been able to gain an appreciation for the talent and hard work of our Chess team.

I hope you have been able to relate to my message on some level. For those still reading, I would like to finish by firstly thanking all the parents who arranged lifts and gave up their Saturdays on the weekend to allow their sons to stay behind and watch the 1sts Rugby fixture. The huge crowd on the weekend was testament to the extensive support of the Terrace Family.  And secondly, being Catholic Education Week, I would like to extend my congratulations and appreciation to those teachers acknowledged on assembly for their 20 plus-year contribution to Terrace.

See you all at House Choir.

Winterfest

It is that time of the year when Terrace celebrates and acknowledges the talents of our Year 12 Drama, Music and Visual Art students.

Winterfest 2018 opens on Tuesday 7 August and concludes with the official opening on Friday 10 August in College Hall commencing at 5.30pm. The theme for this year’s festival is “Lens on the Arts”. Art work will be on display in College Hall each lunch break from Tuesday 7 August to Friday 10 August. Recordings of the Year 12 Music student performances will also be playing in the background. Year 12 Drama students will be performing “The Bacchae” on Thursday 9 August in the Billet St Studio commencing at 6pm and Friday 10 August at 6.30pm.

The official opening in College Hall on Friday 10 August includes food and wine to accompany the Art display and live performances from our Year 12 Music students, followed by the Year 12 Drama performance. I have never experienced a Tennyson game day like the day we had on Saturday - and many people I have spoken to agree.  It was a huge day in every way. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who helped make the day the success it was for the canteen, but I’ll have a go all the same.

Thank you:

  • To our many helpers (and there were scores) who served our hungry and thirsty customers all day with a smile.
  • To those very hard workers in the barbeque pit. The demand for the burgers did not let up until they were all sold out after 4pm. Our cooks were there for hours and hours at a time, with no relief. We are very grateful to you all. In total, there were 650 bacon and egg burgers served, 1290 of the delicious new Augustus cheese burgers and 2500 cups of hot chips. Everything else sold out too in the canteen – pies, salad rolls, rice paper rolls, home-bake, hot dogs … and so on.  We were still selling food after the 1st  XV game was finished.
  • To our amazing home-bakers. We had a bountiful variety of delicious treats on offer all day that were very carefully inspected and selected.
  • To the wonderfully mannered boys – the ladies behind the counter were frequently commenting on how polite all the boys were (from both schools, especially the grateful boarders from Nudgee).
  • To everyone on both sides of the counter for your patience with our new system. We believe the changes adopted are definitely worthwhile and will be in place for the remainder of the home games for the Rugby season. It was pleasing to see we could manage getting through the large crowds without people having to wait too long to be served. What we didn’t anticipate was the overwhelming demand on chips and the queue was understandably frustrating for all those waiting. We apologise to you for that and are looking at how we can overcome this for the home game against Churchie in two weeks.
  • To the Rugby Support Group committee members who are working as a team with the TLG in ensuring our combined efforts are providing a terrific game day experience in terms of hospitality and community; and finally,
  • To Mr Alan Kennedy, groundsman of Tennyson, and his crew of men, for trouble shooting a few hickups we encountered with the usual patience he shows us. It must be testing for him sometimes.

We took some lovely photos early on before the crowds really hit but were too busy after that to think about photos. If you have any photos that show the crowd around the canteen during the day, I would love you to send them to me please, even if it is just in the background of your shots (melissa.a.jo@bigpond.net.au).

Saturday week we welcome Churchie to Tennyson. We are expecting another big day and so hope to get another great turn out of helpers.

Conor Tweedy

Conor and his family remain close in the thoughts and prayers of the Terrace Family. We saw that with the splash of green across Tennyson in support of the Para START program and the generous donations to the cause. Thank you to Dr Carroll for providing us with updates on Conor’s progress. We really do appreciate knowing how he is going.

Mothers’ Retreat

Please join us for a morning of #friendraising at our annual TLG Mothers’ Retreat.  Learn how to make your very own Kokedama – Japanese for ‘moss ball’. This stylish house plant is popping up in all the home décor magazines. Keep it for yourself or give it to someone special. Kokedama by Mirella will take us through all the steps to create your own decorative piece. Kiss the Berry will again provide our amazing brunch; a delicious selection of fruits, cheese, bliss balls, juices and other fresh produce.  Just bring along your green thumb, we’ll do the rest.  Bookings can be made via the College Events Page.

Terralicious 2018

Our wonderful biennial fashion parade – Terralicious – is coming up on Friday 7 September from 11.30am in the main ballroom of City Hall. Terralicious is all about coming together as a community and enjoying friendship, food, fashion and fun. But it’s not all frivolity, this year we are raising funds to support Conor Tweedy and his road to recovery as well as contributing towards a well appointed Wellbeing Centre for our boys.

Tickets for this fabulous event are $150 and go on sale Tuesday 7 August 2018 at 9am via this link on try booking or via the invitation found on the College Events page. Tables are strictly of 10 and you can book as a group or ask to sit with individual friends or ladies from your son’s year level. This event always sells out very quickly so be sure to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Included in the price of your ticket is: a drink on arrival; a delicious two-course meal and a glass of wine with lunch; the wonderful fashion parade from James Street boutiques featuring our beautiful mums and some of their lovely daughters as models; and bus transport to Cloudland for our sensational after party.

This year by buying a Terralicious ticket you automatically go into the inaugural Black Raffle draw for a Hyundai hatchback, valued at more than $17 000. You can boost your chances for this incredible prize by purchasing additional Black Raffle tickets when you make your ticket purchase.

We are also offering a Red Raffle with the premier prize being a $7500 South Sea Island Pearl necklace, courtesy of our very generous sponsors at McKinney’s Jewellers, alongside a host of other gorgeous prizes.

All tickets for the raffles cost $25 and can be purchased via the trybookings site and on the day of the Terralicious function. If you can’t attend the function but would still like to have a chance in the draw, you can buy tickets separately online via the College Events page.

For more information please contact Jo Evans on joevans4@bigpond.com or myself on melissa.a.jo@gmail.com .

The Terralicious ’18 Committee and the TLG are excited to be hosting Terralicious again this year and we look forward to seeing you on the day.

Year 12 etiquette classes

On Tuesday 7 August, we will be seeking assistance from Year 11 mothers with the formal etiquette classes for our Seniors. These sessions will be in House groups during the boys’ RE classes and are always a lot of fun. The important messages of how to behave for their formal are made clear through role playing, anecdotal stories and practical advice. An email to Year 11 mothers was sent last week. Please respond to advise if you are able to partake in this fun tutorial for our Seniors.

TLG correspondence

If you are not on our mailing list but would like to be, please email our Secretary, Mrs Rachel McGahon, on terrace_ladies@outlook.com. Please also ensure that you save this email address into your contacts as it may find its way to Junk Mail.
