Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Over the last couple of weeks, the Year 11 students have been participating in their leadership program. Part of the process is the election of the College Captains and House Captains. It is my privilege to announce the following students as our 2018 Leaders:

College Captain: Jacob Montaner

College Vice Captains: Jack Boland, Thomas Dearlove, Thomas Pappalardo and William Roach

HOUSE CAPTAINS

The Year 12 students will next week commence their final block of exams and Friday week (17 November) will be their final day as Terrace students. The Valedictory Assembly along with Mass and the Graduation Dinner form an important part of their journey at Terrace. I congratulate our Year 12 students on the way they have upheld the traditions of a Terrace Gentleman. Well done Gentlemen.

Last Saturday I attended a ten-year Anniversary Mass for Vicki Sargent. There were a large number of people at the Mass and it was a special opportunity for all who knew Vicki to remember this special person.

Tomorrow the Terrace Ladies Group Thanksgiving Mass will be held in the Chapel of the Holy Family. Again, this is a way of gathering and saying thank you to the many people who form part of the Terrace Ladies Group. In particular, it is an opportunity to thank all of the Year 12 Mothers, some of whom will begin their journey from Terrace. My special thanks to Mrs Melissa Josephson and the TLG Committee for the extraordinary work and support they have given during 2017. Thank you very much.

Last week, Terrace was placed a creditable eighth place in the GPS Track and Field competition. The athletes competed very well, and we are proud of their efforts. My thanks to Mr Anthony Hayward, Ms Tatiana Grigorieva and all the coaches for their efforts throughout the season. Well done to all involved.

Last Sunday the Terrace Senior and Junior Theatresports Teams each won the State Finals. This is an outstanding effort and I congratulate all of the students involved and their coaches.

Finally, this week, I remind all students about the importance of preparing well for the upcoming exams. With only a couple of weeks before they commence, it is important to be focussing on study and revision.

Have a great week.

God bless,

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

Educator Impact

Earlier in the year, I outlined our trial process for our teaching staff engaging in a teacher appraisal process using an online tool called Educator Impact, which deploys the teacher standards developed by the Australian College of Educational Research. This trial process concludes this week and has involved numerous teaching staff and middle leaders, along with hundreds of your sons in providing feedback for growth to the participating teachers. Thank you to Mrs Jane Ellice, Mrs Susan Hinton, Ms Samantha Knott, Ms Suzanne Cook, Mrs Loren Serafin-Huey, Mr Luke Gribble, Mr Jim Allday, Mr Damien Coman, Mr James Turner, Mr Terry Thompson, Mr Rob Sweeper, Mr Noel Covill and Mr Mason Hellyer for their assistance with this process. From 2018, Educator Impact will be used to support professional growth for all our teaching staff and also used as a data collecting tool for appraisal processes with our middle leaders as House Deans, Heads of Faculty and Subject Coordinators.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

Exam Timetables

On Monday this week, timetables were issued to all students up to Year 11. These exam timetables are documents that should be used to strategically set the final revision program prior to exams. Study plans should have already allowed for revision to be well underway and as such, the exam timetable should be used to make the final preparations leading into the exams.

Spare copies of exam timetables can be obtained from Student Services. Parents can access these via the College App or in Parent Lounge (Links section).

Celebration of Excellence

Next Monday we celebrate the outstanding performances of many boys and groups across the College. Around 430 boys will be acknowledged for academic excellence. This represents 26% of the student population. This is the highest percentage that we have ever achieved. Again, I thank and congratulate our students and our staff for their dedication to learning.

All students receiving an award will be issued with a designated seat number that needs to be checked on the lists on the windows opposite Student Services.

Parent Resources

Parents may find the links below helpful. They are diverse in content, ranging from gaming addiction to numeracy and literacy resources.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

In schools, this time of year is often associated with the concept of transition, especially for students in our older year levels. Year 10 students are approaching their final exams at Waterford Place and preparing to return to main campus and Senior schooling. Our Year 12 students excitedly look to the future; in just over two weeks, they will become the newest Terrace Old Boys. We have spoken with them frequently about their legacy and the need to finish their journey well. As the Year 12 students prepare to depart, the Seniors of 2018 are accepting the challenge of leadership. They did an outstanding job of providing support for the team at GPS Track and Field on Friday night. I was proud of the way they maintained a high level of enthusiasm as they provided positive support for our athletes. Signs are very good that the student leadership at Terrace is in good hands.

Our Year 6 students are also in their final weeks as primary school students and are preparing to enter the next phase of their learning as they enter secondary school. Parents will be aware of the resource we provide known as SchoolTV (link available via both the College App and the College Facebook). This month’s edition deals with the topic of transitions and how best to minimise the stress on students that is often associated with these changes. I recommend this resource to parents of students of any age.

Periodically, I am consulted by parents about the topic of alcohol and other drugs in relation to their sons. There is a great deal of research to indicate that exposing the underdeveloped frontal lobes of adolescents to drugs and alcohol can have significant negative long and short-term effects. Medical advice is clear – exposure to even small amounts of alcohol should be delayed as long as possible, with the legal age of 18 the earliest starting point. Unfortunately, some young men will look for opportunities to push the boundaries with this, often attempting to justify their stance by arguing that ‘everyone else is allowed to…..’. Of course, this is far from the reality and, even if true, one's parenting standards should never be dictated by others. It can be a tough job, but the ability to say 'no' to our children when we know it is in their best interests, is of great importance and pays dividends in the long run.

Our Year 12 students enter their final exam period next Wednesday, and we wish them the very best at this important time. Houses will have the opportunity to farewell them at their final House Assembly next Tuesday and as a College, we will wish them well at our Valedictory Assembly. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Seniors as they prepare to transition to life after school. Their final days will cement their legacy at Terrace.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

Our wonderful tradition of honouring those who we have lost from our Terrace Family and own families, continued this week with our Commemorative Mass, aligning with the Feast Days of All Saint and All Souls of this week. Our College Captains each read names, each name that they read was a life lost and a light to be remembered. Each name resonated in the hearts of those gathered in the Chapel of The Holy Family on Tuesday morning.

We have all experienced the pain of loss and the burden it can place on our lives. Some would say that although we can grow to live with and carry the burden loss, we never completely fill the void that loss can place in our lives. What a somber thought! However, it does provide us with the opportunity to keep those who we’ve lost, alive in spirit through how we live our own lives. The spirit and memories of those we’ve lost can inspire us, protect us and guide us, just how a shepherd would tend to their flock.

One source of strength for me during times of loss has been the Psalm that can often be heard filling the atmosphere of those gathered to farewell a loved one – The Lord is My Shepherd. I love its gentle way of reminding us that although we may become physically separated from our loved ones, we can remain open to being guided by their spirit and the memories they have left:

The Lord is my Shepherd and I want to follow wherever he leads me, wherever he goes.Over the mountains, the waters and byways, valleys and highways, he’s waiting for me.
I want to go to meet him there, to lay myself down in his love.
The Lord is my Shepherd and I want to follow wherever he leads me, wherever he goes.
And while on the journey to where we are going he promised to be there to help us along.
And over the mountains we’ll walk on together, know all the wonders he’s given to me.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one and with those who continue to find ways to carry the burden of loss from times past.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman

Week 5 is no doubt a ‘fork in the road’ where boys need to ensure that they are taking the right path for the remainder of the year. It is a time where orals and assignments are being completed. Trying to find good chunks of time for these are essential and weekends can be very valuable in this way.

The problem of course is that homework is still being done to help boys prepare for their upcoming exams and this needs to be completed each night. The final challenge is then to concentrate on revising a subject or subjects as next week is Week 6 and exams are just around the corner. With just over three weeks of school left I encourage our boys to work as hard as they can to earn that wonderful big break over summer.

Recent research indicates that adolescents are spending more non-school related time on devices, which in turn is affecting the amount of sleep they are getting. A San Diego State University study found the number of teens getting less than seven hours sleep a night rose by 17% from 2009 and a staggering 58% from 1991! The data also showed the more time young people spent online, the less sleep they got.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Theatresports

Congratulations to our Junior B team, The Red Cravats, and our Senior A team, The Bretzfast Club, who competed in the Youth Theatresports Grand Finals at La Boite Theatre last Sunday. Both of our teams held the trophy high at the end of their competitions! Whilst The Red Cravats won outright, the Bretzfast Club shared the spoils with Padua College. What a great way for Terrace to finish the 2017 College year. We look forward to our Junior B team continuing together next year. Our thanks to Alex Cummins – Terrace’s most successful co-curricular Captain of 2017.

Well done to Terrace staff member, Ms Nicole Kirsch and GT Old Boy, Henry Bretz who coached our boys to victory.

Celebration of Excellence

As mentioned last week, it is important that all performers for the Celebration of Excellence attend each and every rehearsal. Please check the Terrace App for rehearsal times and venues. Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

Congratulations to all boys who were involved in Track and Field last Friday.

The Championships are a long day running from 11.30am through to presentations at 7.45pm. Thank you to all the boys who competed and to those boys and families who attended the post event function to celebrate.

For the record, the team recorded eigth place – down from sixth place in 2016. As a team, we did not perform as well as we wanted, but rather than being dejected about the final placing, the team and all involved should view and identify with what occurred as an opportunity to learn to improve. Identify what did not work – learn from it and strive for improvement both as individuals and as a team.

The Championship of 2017 is a learning opportunity. The GPS Championships in 2015 and 2016 were significant steps forward in performance. This year has been a reality check and a serious ‘wakeup call’. We will take stock and rebound in 2018.

Personally, I was exceptionally impressed by many boys who competed in events that were not necessarily their ‘pet’ event, but for the sake of the College tried to the best of their abilities. These athletes were outstanding, selfless and diligent.

Congratulations to all athletes who recorded personal bests. Performance under pressure was outstanding.

Hudson Seefeld (Under 13 100m), Oliver Seawright (Under 16 1500m) and Oscar Sullivan (Open Javelin) were victorious on the day, winning their events. The College celebrated their victories at assembly this week with the three boys ringing the “Championship Bell”. A special mention must go to Oscar Sullivan who recorded five victories in five years – an exceptional achievement.

The Year 11 students who supported the Track and Field team were outstanding in their enthusiasm and fervor. Their efforts all night long to lift the team was noticed and truly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you to the Support Group – Terrun for the support you provide to the athletes throughout the entire Track and Field season.

Finally, thank you to all the coaches involved and especially to Mr Anthony Hayward and Ms Tatiana Grigorieva for their leadership. Well done.

THIS WEEKEND

A reminder that this weekend is the annual Boat Christening community event, this is open to all parents (Commencing at 8.30am). Boys in the 2018 Year 10 – Open groups are required to attend in grey school uniform. All 2018 Year 8 and 9 boys will have regular training as scheduled.

LAST WEEKEND

Over the weekend, the red and black of Terrace oars flashed down the Tennyson reach during the first competition of the season.

The Churchie / BBC / Terrace Head Race was a great spectacle, with parents lining the banks at the various vantage points to watch the action.

Overall, Terrace had a promising regatta and finished second, only 3 points behind Churchie who very narrowly missed out on the Old Boys’ Cup GPS Premiership last season.

The next Head Race will be against GPS Premiers Nudgee and Spring Hill rivals Grammar on November 11 (DRAFT Draw Attached). The Open 1st VIII race will be live again on Twitter, so watch this space!

RUGBY NEWS

We are pleased to announce that Mr Tom Barker has been appointed as our 1st XV Head Coach for season 2018. He will work closely with the Terrace Director of Rugby, Mr Tyron Mandrusiak and will continue to ensure the consistency of skill execution, terminology and performance leading to a whole school approach and an exciting new era for Terrace Rugby.

I look forward to the opportunity to play a significant role in developing the obvious talent and enthusiasm of the young rugby playing men of Terrace.

The following is a brief overview to Tom’s coaching and playing background.

Mr Tom Barker is an experienced career rugby coach with coaching roles and success in Australian Rugby at National, Super Rugby, Queensland Representative, Club and Schoolboy levels. Highlights in Tom’s career include the following.

  • Rugby Coordinator / Assistant Coach - ACT Brumbies, 2001 Super 12 Champions

Captain’s Corner | Vice Captain, Bill Bingham

On Saturday night Terrace won our first premiership of the year. Regardless of the sport (it was Theatresports) we were victorious. It also symbolised the last time I would be involved in a team representing Terrace.

Leaving the theatre after the victorious display from the Terrace Theatresports team had me thinking of all the times I had been involved in co-curricular activities here. Regardless of the activity, from the annual mathematics competitions to every Saturday morning spent watching or playing, but nonetheless representing Terrace at Tennyson, some of my fondest memories and greatest friendships have been made in these activities. Yet, it wasn’t just doing these activities that I managed to form a love for the boys and Terrace itself, it was also through living the everyday life of a Terrace Gentleman.

In 2012, a younger version of myself was distraught to leave my primary school – I hadn’t even heard the term 'Terrace Gentleman', though I had met a few. I thought I could never feel so at home at a place; of the hundreds of people that I knew at my old school, two were coming with me to Terrace. Coincidentally, those two were my best friends, but it was still a shock to my system nonetheless! During my first week at school I still felt out of it, the person I spoke to most was my buddy, Nic Given. However, this all changed when I went to camp at Maroon in Week 3 Term 1. After forming friendships with my House group on that camp I haven’t looked back. Five years after I was distraught leaving my old school, I think I will be even more distraught to leave my home at Terrace.

Everything I have done leading up to leaving has all been part of forming myself into the best possible Terrace Gentleman. The process set out for us at the school allows us to reach our full potential, you just have to trust it. At the conclusion of Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 watching the Seniors graduate always felt light years away. Yet, now that I am at the end, I wish I could do it all again. Thank you to everyone that read to the end and everyone else that has made my Terrace journey one I won’t forget. We are, and always will be, 18 000 Strong.

TLG Thanksgiving Mass – Friday 3 November 9.30am

Tomorrow, 3 November, is the end of year TLG Thanksgiving Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family, followed by Morning Tea in the Founders’ room. It is a very special event in our year. All are welcome to join us. Year 12 mothers have their annual lunch on afterwards at Gambaro restaurant.

College Staff Christmas Lunch – Wednesday 29 November

NB: please note a change to this day – originally scheduled for Tuesday 28 November, now Wednesday 29 November

The annual Staff Christmas Lunch is a wonderful celebration of our staff in appreciation for all their efforts and support of our boys throughout the year. The TLG hosts this through the generosity of our families with contributions of help on the day, food and monetary donations. More details on this will be distributed in the next couple of weeks along with links to volunteer sign-on pages.

Parent Directory

As the year is speeding towards its conclusion, I feel it timely to remind our families to ensure that their details are included on the Parent Directory. This is an opt-in situation – your contact details are not automatically included on the Parent Directory. To ensure you remain in touch with your year level cohort, please go to your Parent Directory listing on the Parent Lounge and select the details you wish to share. This is how you do it:

Parent Lounge | Parent Details | Parent Directory | then select “Maintain” at the “My Parent Listing”. Then you need to select to “Share” which aspect of your listing you want public – be sure to “Save Changes”.

More detailed instructions for this process are available via the College App.

There are still many blank spaces in the Directory across all year levels so if you notice friends without their details on the electronic version, please send them a reminder perhaps. The Parent Directory is a fundamental component of the College’s inclusive community so it is vital we have the information at hand.

Uniform Shop – help needed for 2018 new students

The Terrace Uniform Shop is currently fitting out our new Terracians with their uniforms to start school in 2018. Each year we send a call out on behalf of the Uniform Shop seeking assistance from mothers for this. Over the last couple of weeks sign-on links have been included in previous newsletters and I am delighted to see that all of the spaces on the Volunteer sign-on link are filled. Thank you to all who have put their hand up and rolled their sleeves up to get our new arrivals sorted with their uniforms. There is one space left and that is Tuesday November 7 after school. If you are able to assist at that time for a couple of hours please follow this link: https://www.volunteersignup.org/KAW3C

Impetigo is highly contagious and parents/guardians are asked to ensure that any skin infections are covered and treated as per the advice given by Queensland Health.

Thank you to those parents who update the College with health information. This allows us to keep the wider Terrace Family informed with relevant Queensland Health information.
