Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

It seems a little difficult to believe that the end of Semester 1 is here already. During the last six months, much has occurred at Terrace, both in and out of the classrooms. My thanks to the staff, parents and students for their contributions throughout the term.

While a well-earned rest is part of the holiday routine, there are also many College activities occurring over the coming weeks. During the break, activities include a Rugby tour to New Zealand, musicians travelling to the USA, Rugby and Basketball clinics, Year 9 skiing in New Zealand and space explorers heading to NASA in the USA. I wish everyone involved in these activities safe travels and remind you that while being fortunate to attend, you are representing Terrace locally, nationally, and internationally.

The new building is nearing completion and will be handed over to the College on Monday 1 July. Over the holiday period, staff will shift into the building so that it is operational for the first day of Term 3, on Monday 15 July.

With the building works completed, the drop off and pick up processes will revert back to Rogers Street and we will no longer be using the Centenary Pool car park for the afternoon pick up. This temporary pick up process has worked well, and I thank parents for their support and cooperation when using this area.

With Rogers Street now becoming the major entrance and exit area, and therefore pick up area, I ask parents to continue to show great care and awareness when using this street. This is particularly important in the afternoon when nearly 1000 students will exit through this area. When picking up students, please avoid ‘double parking’ or doing U-turns in the street. I thank you in anticipation of your cooperation.

In the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours List, a number of Terrace Old Boys were recognised. Professor Peter Donnelly - GT 1976 was awarded a Knighthood for his contribution to genetic research, Mr Stephen Conry - GT 1981 and GTOBA President 2009-2010 was made a  Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contribution to the property industry and community work, Dr Bill Sultmann - GT 1969 was made a  Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contribution to education and the community and Mr Tony Shaw - GT 1970 was made a  Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contribution to the rugby community. Congratulations to all four Terracians.

As we journey towards the end of the term, I wanted to include some staff news. In recent times the College has been conducting interviews for some new staff in the Finance area. I am pleased to announce the following appointments:

  • Ms Clare Condon – Compliance and HR Officer
  • Mr Duncan Fairley – Fees Administrator

Also regarding staff news, I announce that Mr Phil Elvery and Ms Marissa Grant will finish at Terrace at the end of the term.  I thank Phil and Marissa for their valuable contributions to Terrace over the years. In particular, I wish to acknowledge the dedicated service of Marissa Grant, who has been a member of the Terrace staff for 29 years. I thank Marissa for this journey and acknowledge her contributions over the last 29 years. Mr Sam Mackinnon will be on leave for 12 months as he continues his coaching career with the Brisbane Bullets.

In the final piece of staff news, it is my pleasure to inform the Terrace Family that Mr Chris Ryan has been appointed as the Principal of Ambrose Treacy College from 2020. This is an excellent outcome for Chris and a reflection of his professionalism, dedication and expertise as an educator. I congratulate Chris on his appointment, and we will have the opportunity to more formally thank and farewell Chris later in the year. The process for the appointment of a new Deputy Principal will commence at the start of Term 3.

Finally this week, I again thank families for their engagement and support this term and hope all families have a restful break in preparation for what will be a busy Term 3.

Have a nice week.

God Bless,
Dr Michael Carroll College Principal

Deputy Principal | Mr Chris Ryan

Staff News

Best wishes to Ms Niamh McConnell, who finishes with us this week and commences a new contract position with Stuartholme after the break.

Thank you to Mr Derek Cameron, who has facilitated Mr Dwayne Hoy’s classes over the past few weeks.

Thank you to Mrs Susie Cooper and Mrs Kaylene Campbell as they also complete contracts for Mrs Mary Meadows and Mr Anthony Hayward. They will return for a time after the holidays, as explained last week and we look forward to welcoming back Mrs Meadows and Mr Hayward.

We wish Mrs Loren Serafin-Huey, our Program Leader, Years 11 and 12 the very best for her recovery following a recent operation. She will have some time for rest now leading into next term. We wish Loren well for this time and look forward to her return.

Best wishes to Mrs Suzanne Cook, who commences her long service leave and for the pending dads-to-be on staff: Mr Paul Antenucci and Mr Gavin Clements.

Sincere thanks to all families who have written to me to wish me well in my move to Ambrose Treacy College in 2020. These best wishes are greatly appreciated. Terrace is a wonderful community of staff, students, parents and Old Boys and I am blessed to be a part of a place where I have learned so much and have been supported so well. I look forward to the next six months of all things in the red and black.

The New Mt Sion building

As we come to the end of the term, I am mindful of the historical significance in the Terrace story of the completion of the Mt Sion building project. This magnificent building will provide community and play space, collaborative meeting and working spaces, administration and leadership spaces and teaching and learning spaces for this still new century. It has been a wonderful learning experience to be a part of the planning team with Dr Carroll and the leadership team, our College Board Master Planning sub-committee whose expertise and generosity are extraordinary, and in working with Mr Tony Macksey, our dedicated and talented College Architect and his team, and the Rohrig construction team. Many staff and students will benefit from this project for decades to come and as we move in and get settled, I congratulate Dr Carroll for his vision and commitment to the project and all of the people involved in the realisation of this vision. I acknowledge the patience, tolerance and good will of the entire staff and student community and thank them for their support of each other through some interesting times over the past couple of years!

End of semester

Along with this significant project, we are now a semester into the implementation of the new senior schooling model in Year 11 and halfway through the final year of the ‘OP system' in Queensland. Again, I acknowledge and celebrate the commitment, dedication and talent of our staff, both teaching and non-teaching for how they work together to give every boy the opportunity to be the best he can be in both academic and co-curricular pursuits. It is a busy and challenging time of change, and our staff are forging the way effectively and successfully. I thank them on your behalf and wish everyone a well-earned rest when it comes and time for self, friends and family.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

As we come to the end of the examination period, it is important to take time over the upcoming holiday break to reflect upon the term.

Your son’s Semester 1 report will be available on the Parent Lounge after 9am on Tuesday 2 July. The results contained within this report will provide point in time data to indicate your son’s progress. This data is the starting point for discussions and reflection to occur regarding a student’s progress.

Whilst the individual subject result is an important indicator, reflection on how the result was achieved is a much more powerful message. A strong result will reinforce a student’s work ethic or positive change to study habits. A disappointing result will highlight the need to modify existing work habits and work ethic. It is vitally important that these messages are explained and reinforced.

To support the discussion you have with your son, Parent/Teacher/Student interviews will be held on 24 July and 31 July. These interviews are an opportunity to reflect on the Semester 1 result and to work with teaching staff to develop strategies to enhance academic performance. Booking times for these interviews will occur through Parent Lounge. Further information regarding this process will be available with your son’s report.

Additionally, there are a number of key academic information evenings during the first half of Term 3. Semester 1 Academic Medal Assembly will be held on 6 August and will recognise students' academic success and improvement from Semester 1 results. There will be information evenings for the following groups:

• 5 August - Year 11 2020 Subject Selection Evening
• TBC - Year 11 English and Literature and Music Extension information evening
• 15 August - Year 12 Parent and Student QTAC evening
• 22 August - Year 9 2020 Subject Selection Evening

I trust that students and parents have a restful and enjoyable holiday period.

Acting Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

As the term draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the last nine weeks and wish you a safe and relaxing mid-year break.

The community looks forward to moving into the new Mt Sion building next term. No doubt, it has been a difficult 12 months at the College for the students managing the reduced space and putting up with the noise. Semester 2 will see a number of changes to the areas allocated to various year levels as we reoccupy Duhig Place and the new rooftop area. The Year 8s will move onto the rooftop space, leaving Treacy Court to our Year 7s. Year 9 will be brought up from the lower basketball court to the area outside the Sport and Culture Office. The Year 12s will return to Duhig Place and the Year 11s will maintain their current space but extend all the way across to under the Chapel. The Years 5 and 6 students have been enjoying the grass at Victoria Park and will remain in this space for the rest of the year.

This Friday afternoon, the Term 2 Sport program concludes when our 1st XI Football and 1st IV Tennis teams host IGS. Despite the unusual timing, there is some enthusiasm amongst Years 11 and 12 students about attending the event as spectators. It is wonderful that our students are keen to attend and give their support. Although the term will be finished, it is exceptionally important that spectators are dressed in full College uniform and that their conduct is exemplary – we need to see support that is positive and focussed on helping our players to perform at their best. All the very best to everyone involved.

At the College assembly last week, I reminded students that the College’s expectations about student conduct apply to all camps and tours that may be held on the holidays. I ask that if you have a son attending these activities, you take some time to remind him of both the College's and your expectations of his conduct when away on tours or camps.

Next term, we also welcome Mr Anthony Hayward back as Windsor House Dean. I thank Ms Jane Williams for her efforts acting in this role; she did a wonderful job in leading the House. Finally, I never take for granted how blessed we are in this community, especially after the holidays when all boys and staff return to the school safe and sound with an appropriate haircut.

Please enjoy this time together.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

Gifts of the heart

I love this time of term. It is not just for the approaching holiday break, rather it is the opportunity to reflect on how our hopes and intentions have been enlivened. Be it friendships, academic improvement, personal goals or overcoming struggles, each of us have journeyed from Easter Sunday carrying our hopes for this term, drawing on courage and determination to do our best.

We haven’t been alone on this journey. We have had our friends, our families and our school community supporting and encouraging us, particularly when things haven’t gone to plan. We have benefited from, as well being the benefactor of, wonderful gifts that can’t be seen, unwrapped or quantified. Rather, they are gifts of the heart that enliven our spirit as an individual and as a Terrace Family.

It has already been said and sung - ‘all we need is love’. Love enlivens our humanity. Love is forgiving. Love is empowering. When we treat others the way we would like to be treated, we love one another. Love strengthens our spirit.

When we grow weary tackling challenges, we may become frustrated. We are supported through these times with the gift of patience.  Patience strengthens our spirit.

Acts of kindness to each other grow an atmosphere of care. When we feel the embrace of care, we feel safe to take on new challenges, leaving behind self-doubt and fear. Kindness strengthens our spirit.

When we laugh with each other, we spread joy. Joy energises our youthful spirit and encourages us to see the best in each other.  Joy strengthens our spirit.

Faithfulness is our compass when we feel lost. Having faith that God will provide all that we need is far from easy. Trusting faithfully in the action of the Holy Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus strengthens our spirit.

Gentleness is being sensitive to our own fragility and walking with others in theirs. Gentleness respects each other’s shortcomings. Gentleness strengthens our spirit.

We can sometimes become confused and angered. By graciously embracing and sharing peace, we look towards a hope-filled future. Peace strengthens our spirit.

When we respect the stories of each other, we display understanding. By being a humble presence to others we are liberated from closed-mindedness. Understanding strengthens our spirit.

Wisdom helps us recognise the importance of others and of keeping God central in our lives. Knowing that God is the beginning and end of all things frees us from our fears. Wisdom strengthens our spirit.

May the upcoming holiday break be a time for you and your family to have your spirit strengthened and energised. Be it having a break from making lunches, a break from drop offs and pick-ups or a break from the hustle and bustle of school life, I hope breathing space is created for you so that you can renew your hopes and dreams.

I wish all members of our Terrace family a safe and happy holiday break.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Well done to the Chess team who have been competing in the Somerville House Chess Tournament over the past two weekends with pleasing results. Theatresports

Theatresports wrapped up for our Junior team after their competition at Mt St Michael’s earlier this month. The boys competed gallantly for their first time in the competition and will continue to train later this year, honing their skills ready to come back into the competition bigger and better next year. Next term will see the return of our Senior 1 and Senior 2 teams in their quarter final heats, competing at home in our very own Edmund Rice Theatre. Senior 2 will compete on 29 July, with Senior 1 on 5 August. The teams are looking forward to seeing as many supporters as possible. Well done to all involved. Special thanks must go to the coach of Senior 3 Ms Tilly Oddy-Black and Junior coach Mr Innes Harriman for their involvement this semester.

2019/2020 Entertainment Books

The Terrace Performing Arts Support Group is once again selling the 2019/2020 Entertainment Books as our major fundraiser. Those within our community who have used these books before will no doubt know their value for money and the scope of activities covered within their pages.

This year, we have decided to focus on the online 'digital book’.  The book can be downloaded via an App to your smartphone and away you go. This eliminates the need to carry the physical book with you and move it from vehicle to vehicle. Of course, if you prefer, the hard copy of the book is still available for purchase and collection from the Cultural office.

For those wishing to purchase the 2019/2020 Entertainment Book, please click: SUPPORT US NOW

The busy and fast-paced term of Terrace sport will finish this Friday, with games against Ipswich Grammar School.  The 1st XI Soccer and 1st IV Tennis will be at home with play beginning at 12.30pm at Tennyson and Victoria Park courts respectively.

I would like to thank everyone involved in Terrace sport this term - the boys for their commitment to their teams, the parents for continuing to allow their sons to participate in what is a demanding sport schedule, and the coaches for their dedication to guiding and teaching young Terrace Gentlemen valuable life lessons, while participating in team and individual sports.

While our effort and commitment can’t be questioned in Cross Country, Gymnastics, Tennis and Football this term, Terrace will be seeking improvement across some key areas to complement the strong programs being run at the College.

Throughout the holidays, Term 3 in-season activities Basketball and Rugby (including the New Zealand Under 15 tour) will be putting the finishing touches to their pre-season preparation in anticipation of Round 1 against TGS.

During the clinics, all elements of the 'Smart Rugby' and 'Confidence in Contact' program will be delivered by experienced coaches leading into our trial games against Nudgee College on Saturday 13 July at Tennyson.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no need to register as it is an expectation that all boys attend.

Boys who are not participating in the Term 2 Rugby Development Program and are not available for the clinic will be required to complete the 'Smart Rugby' and 'Confidence in Contact' training during the first two weeks of Term 3 training, prior to being eligible to play in Round 2.

Parent Lounge

Participation in the College sport program is growing and will continue to do so, due to the quality of the programming that allows for all levels of participation, in addition to the quality of coaching across the individual sports.  The flow of communication to a large number of families is extremely important in keeping everybody well informed. It is vital to ensure that you sign on electronically via the Parent Lounge for in-season and pre-season activities offered each term.

Attendance at training

I would ask that all boys commit to their attendance at training twice a week and present ready for their games and lead-up meets, whether at home or away. Representing the College is something to be valued. Being a team member who can be depended on entails sacrifice and commitment, no matter what level or activity.

Uniform

Please be aware that all directors, coordinators and coaches have been asked to monitor training and playing uniform.  We want to ensure the highest standards both on and off the field when representing the College.

Communication

To remain up to date, please download the College App and select to receive notifications for your son's selected activities. You will find updates, training schedules, team lists, playing schedules, game/meet locations and further information under the individual sport. Please note we are moving away from ongoing email communication, with the College App as the main source of communication.

Thank you

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all Year 12 Tennis, Football, Gymnastics and Cross Country students and thank them for their efforts over the years at Terrace. These young men have represented the College in their respective sports, some since 2011. The Terrace Community is very proud of you, and in your final year at Terrace, we want to publicly thank you for pulling on the red and black for the last time.

Have a great Term 3 in Terrace Sport.

The Weekly Wrap

Tennis Wrap

The Terrace Tennis season ended last Saturday for the Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 teams with an excellent day of tennis against Brisbane Grammar School and internal challenge matches between Years 7 and 8. It was a good opportunity to be able to play the leaders in tennis in the primary teams, as this provided another opportunity to learn and be challenged.

The Tennis program caters for all abilities, and the product of 2019 was an improvement from the years before. We hope to continue this improvement in 2020. The aim is to continue to provide opportunities for those who either wish to play socially with their mates like this year’s 3rd IV team or to cater for those striving to be the best they can in the performance side of the program. Tennis is a game for all and a game for life.

The program would like to take this opportunity to thank a few groups who have been integral in the success of the season. Firstly, the Support Group who volunteer their time, and work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the program is well supported and continues to run in the right direction. The passion that this group shows for the game of tennis and the wellbeing of Terrace Tennis can’t be understated, and we thank them for this. Secondly, the program would like to acknowledge and thank Ms Cerene Hughes, who has been fantastic in helping the program behind the scenes. To Dr Carroll, the CLT and Tony McGahan, we extend our thanks for your continued support of tennis at the College and the countless hours you all contribute.

The program would also like to thank the students who represented the College in the Tennis program. The efforts this year, commitment to both training and match play, was described by those who know, as a significant improvement from years past.

A big thank you to all the College Coaches, led by Head Coach Mr Graeme Brimblecombe and well supported by Mr Leon Frost and Mr John Stoddard who have all been fantastic at training and game day, supporting the boys within the program. Their knowledge of the game is equal to their enthusiasm in ensuring each boy becomes the best tennis he can be, creating a great training environment at each session.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the parent group for their continued support of the program and their assistance during the season. Be it early morning starts at Victoria Park or away games, the support of your sons and flexibility with scheduling during the year has ensured that the boys can get the most out of the program.

We hope your son has had a positive experience playing tennis at the College and we look forward to seeing him involved again in 2020.

Head Coach wrap

Firstly, I would like to thank all of the boys who participated in the Tennis program. I would also like to congratulate all boys on the results they achieved and the effort they put in to represent Terrace.

This year, we achieved very strong performances across our program. Our 1st IV finished fourth for the season with many other Terrace teams finishing with a positive win/loss ratio. The results have highlighted the depth in the program.

We also achieved a record of 150 boys who represented Terrace this season in tennis. This included three year levels extending into F teams. A tremendous amount of work was put in by a number of the Tennis Directors ensuring the extra teams received high quality matches across the season.

I would also like to acknowledge the year 12 boys who are leaving us at the end of this year. Many of these boys have played tennis for the entire time they have been at Terrace. I would like to personally thank every team member for their efforts and commitment to Terrace Tennis.

Our Tennis Captains Xavier Lim, Charlie Van Balen and Bryce Robinson have led the program with dignity and humility and will leave in a very good position. This year, we have had a fantastic coaching group, with 13 coaches contributing to the growth of the program. This year, we have developed a good mix of professional tennis coaches alongside a large number of old boys recycling back into the program.

I would like to thank all the coaches for their efforts and dedication. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the parent support group for their support throughout this season. Through Mr Cameron Van Balen, we have had further growth with parent participation this year.

To wrap the season up, I would like to say that tennis is not a seasonal sport. However, GPS Tennis is. To continue your child’s development, I urge parents to try and find some time to continue with some form of tennis, whether that be fixtures, tournaments, coaching/training or social hits. For those who are interested, there are opportunities for year-round tennis at Terrace through the Lifetime commercial programs. Information has been emailed out on those programs and will be resent shortly.

Thanks again for all of your efforts and support.

Mr Graeme Brimblecombe | Head Coach Tennis

Terrace Ladies Group

Canteen

Football season is has now finished. Thank you to all those parents who were able to send in homebake or were able to help out either in the canteen or the barbeque pit.

Term 3 is Rugby season (four home games in 2019) and kicks off with the Nudgee trial matches at home this year on Saturday 13 July (last Saturday of the holidays). Look out for the volunteer signup in the third week of the holidays. Homebake is just as important as being able to give hands-on help in the canteen or barbeque pit. We will be calling on year groups to contribute to the homebake each week. We are constantly trying to improve our offerings at Tennyson. In light of this, the TLG has purchased new warmers for use in both the canteen and the barbeque pit. These, together with the use of line controls, will hopefully reduce wait times in peak periods.

Please feel welcome to come in and help out even if just for a short time. It is a way of meeting new friends and also of finding out about what is happening in the community. Many words of wisdom have been exchanged over the years. Please note that volunteers must be current parents.

Care and concern

This year, we are lucky to have very competent care and concern leaders. I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Chris Giust and Cathy Nash for their work on streamlining the processes. The TLG has recently purchased a larger freezer for Waterford for the storage of C and C meals. This will enable us to cater for families over the holidays and also have a bank of ready-made meals.
Thank you to those who have donated their Coles containers to C and C. We are still collecting them (you can never have too many). If you have some, please drop them to either student reception on Main Campus or at Waterford Place.

Debating Dinner

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets to this year’s event. It is by far the funniest event in the school calendar – yes, debating can be fun. There are limited tickets available, so book yours now to avoid missing out.

Students and parents are invited from Years 5-12. Students are seated at tables with their year level.

Coming up

7 September – Terrace Long Lunch Tennyson from 12.30pm. Bookings open 9am, 19 July $60 + booking fee. See College Events.
9 September – TLG Meeting - Light Breakfast during meeting in Founders’ Room

Have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you next term.

Community Information

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is a joint state and federal government initiative. The Data Collection is an annual national count of the number of students provided with educational adjustments as a result of their disability as defined broadly under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and reinforces the obligations that schools have towards students under the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

As a requirement under the legislation, St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace participates in the census.  The reference date for the NCCD census is 2 August 2019.

Please read the attached information sheet for further information and make contact with the Exceptional Learners Department at the College if you require additional information.
