Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Welcome back. I trust that the Easter break provided an opportunity for you and your family to recharge and spend some time together.

While we continue to navigate our way through a COVID impacted world, I will refrain from making any predictions regarding normality for this term. However, one message I offered students at the various year level assemblies this week highlighted routine and the need to establish some momentum from the start of the term. The ever-changing landscape of Term 1 made developing a routine challenging, hence my focus on establishing practices and processes that assist with establishing a routine – in and out of the classroom.

With the start of any new term, there are staffing changes to report as people return from leave or take planned leave during Term 2. Below is a list of staff changes for this term.

  • Mrs Emma Hatchett – returning from maternity leave and resuming as Xavier House Dean
  • Mr Adam Read – taking long service leave during Term 2
  • Mr Anthony Baruksopulo – taking long service leave during Term 2
  • Mrs Anne Caune – continuing leave during Term 2
  • Mr Charles Brauer – Acting Dean of Business Operations during Term 2
  • Mr Glenn Cameron – Acting Dean of Administration during Term 2
  • Ms Annabelle Kumar – Acting Barrett House Dean during Term 2
  • Mr Innes Harriman - Acting Buckley House Dean during Term 2
  • Ms Danielle O’Dwyer – Acting Subject Coordinator: Drama
  • Ms Ashley Naude – English Teacher Term 2
  • Mrs Jan Cameron – Maths Teacher Term 2
  • Ms Angela Smith – Maths Teacher Term 2
  • Mr Justin Reedy - Year 6 Teacher Term 2
  • Mrs Karen Lalic – Student Services Assistant

The first session of our Parent /Teacher Interviews was conducted this week, with another online session planned for next week. These meetings provide an important opportunity for parents/caregivers, teachers and students to connect and follow up on results from Term 1. The College conducted these interviews online following the overwhelmingly positive feedback from previous years. I thank all staff and parents/caregivers for their efforts regarding these interviews. I particularly want to acknowledge our IT staff, who have worked so diligently to set up these online interviews. A reminder, school will finish for students at the start of lunchtime (12.51pm) next Wednesday to allow teaching staff to prepare for the final Parent/Teacher Interviews.

Over the last few weeks, restoration work has continued on the Tennyson fields. It is hoped that this work on the fields will be completed by 13 May, with training recommencing at Tennyson from the beginning of Week 5. The building works required at Tennyson will take significantly longer. It is anticipated that some changeroom and toilet facilities will be available for games scheduled at Tennyson on Saturday 28 May. However, the majority of building work, including the Canteen and BBQ areas, will not be completed by this date. I will keep the Terrace Family updated on progress over the coming weeks.

I would like to congratulate the following students who have been elected as leaders of the Football and Tennis programs for 2022.

Football
  • Elijah Eustace – Captain
  • Will Dent – Vice Captain
Tennis
  • Tom Campbell – Captain
  • Harry Dutton – Vice Captain

I am confident these young men will represent the College with distinction, and I wish them every success this season.

Finally, this week, I draw your attention to a piece of College history created in today’s edition of the Terrace News, which will be the last to be published in this format. From next week, an alternative communication will be published highlighting the many stories and activities within the Terrace Family. The new communication will be more succinct and not contain information such as events and co-curricular activities that are already accessible via the College App and other social media platforms. I trust that you will enjoy this evolution of the Terrace News format.

Have a great week and Term 2.

God Bless.

Deputy Principal | Mr Damien Fall

As we commence the new term, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to school. I hope that the Easter break allowed our families to spend quality time together while getting some much-needed rest and recovery. As I reflect on the unusual events of Term 1, I do not dare to predict what might lie ahead for us this term. However, I hope we can have an uninterrupted nine weeks; the term is brief enough without further issues. Our students are always at their best when things are consistent and predictable.

My sincere thanks to parents and caregivers for the way they embraced the Parent/Teacher Interviews this week. It is always pleasing to hear feedback from teachers about the number of positive, constructive conversations that take place. As educators, we are always delighted to work in partnership with parents and caregivers, and I thank our families for the spirit in which these interviews are invariably conducted. A reminder that the second round of interviews will be held next Wednesday, 27 April from 1.30-7.30pm. Bookings for these interviews are now open. There are still interview times available for those wishing to take the opportunity. Please note that school will finish for students at the start of lunchtime (12.51pm) on this day.

Schools are increasingly dynamic workplaces, and a large place such as Terrace employs a significant number of teaching and non-teaching staff. This means that staffing changes regularly arise as teachers take leave or possibly move on to other professional opportunities. Late last term, we had several unexpected teaching staff changes, and recent days have seen us working to replace absent staff. Unfortunately, this means that some classes in the College will have a new teacher as we commence the term. I have written to parents and caregivers of those students affected to explain this, and I do apologise for the need to make changes at times. I acknowledge that a change of teacher is not preferred, but I am confident that we have engaged excellent staff as replacements and that students will not be adversely affected by the changes. I thank our families in anticipation of your understanding and support as we manage our large workforce. Best wishes to all for a productive term ahead.

Dean of Identity | Mr Terry Thompson

A warm welcome to Term 2. I hope you had a refreshing Easter break with family and friends. My parents recently sold the family home and have been doing some travelling in their motorhome. Currently, they are staying down the coast, so we travelled nice and early to see them on Easter morning. Before we set off, my four-year daughter Isabel was so excited to have “chocolate for breakfast”. We felt fortunate to spend the day with our loved ones after the last couple of years of not being able to get together for Easter. It was a nice reminder that chocolate sweetens things up, but Easter is so much more. It is a time of gratitude, love, hope, and peace.

Each week I receive a gospel reflection from Christian Brother Julian McDonald. I want to leave you with an excerpt from his Easter Sunday reflection.

When we work our way through all the events that led up to the death of Jesus and the confusion and doubt in those whose lives were turned upside down when God raised him from the grave, the ultimate message is that the compassion, generosity, selflessness, mercy and justice that Jesus lived and proclaimed are truly vindicated. The resurrection does not deny the reality of suffering, illness, violence, pain, loss and death. It really reminds us that things like bigotry, prejudice, hatred, injustice and death are really prerequisites for resurrection. The resurrection holds out to us, and to those to whom we reach out in times of loss and devastation, a message of hope that goodness will ultimately triumph. The resurrection of Jesus gives us reason to be agents of resurrection for those who are suffering loss, grief and disaster. If resurrection is something to which we give only notional assent, there can be no sense in getting out and fighting for justice, truth and integrity. It calls for action.

Live Jesus in our Hearts…Forever

St Joseph…Pray for us.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

Welcome to Term 2. I trust that all our families were able to take at least a small break over the Easter period, and I hope our young men have returned feeling rested and full of enthusiasm for the new term. There is rarely a dull moment at Terrace, and on Tuesday of next week (26 April), we hold our annual Inter-House Cross Country carnival. As with all such events, the focus is on participation, fun and House connection. All students are asked to wear their House sports uniform to school for the event. It is an expectation that every student who is physically able to do so completes the course for their House. This is an enjoyable, important and compulsory day for all students. I look forward to every student participating to the best of his ability.

With the start of the new term comes the commencement of Football, Tennis and Cross Country. We hope to attract large numbers to our premier team matches this term. All boys supporting the 1st XI Football team have been asked to ensure that they wear their formal College uniform (white shirt, blazar and red HPE cap) and sit in the grandstand for the match. I ask parents and caregivers to assist us by ensuring their sons are correctly dressed if they are attending. A further reminder that all students participating in any co-curricular activities need to wear the proper playing strip for each of the sports. Many thanks in anticipation for your support with this matter.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the formation of students while involving parents in the process, over the next few days, we are facilitating several high-quality presentations. This week, we host Mr Paul Dillon from Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA), who will address students from Years 10 to 12. Paul presents research-based information and advice about adolescents, alcohol and other drugs. Paul will speak with the students on Friday. High-quality information is available on the DARTA website if parents/caregivers want to view relevant resources. James Peterson from ‘Breaking Free’ will also address our Year 11 students on putting their mental health first.

A reminder that winter uniform commences on Tuesday of Week 3 (3 May). As previously communicated, all students must wear their blazers to and from school every day. Long trousers are compulsory for students from Years 11 and 12. I look forward to a positive and highly successful second term.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

Welcome to Term 2. I hope you had a restful and refreshing break from the busyness here at the College. Holidays are a time for all students to rest, reflect and reconnect with family and friends.

The reflection aspect of holidays is important. This reflection allows us to re-examine our achievements from the previous term and ask important questions about the next step forward. On Tuesday and next week, we will formalise this process through Parent /Teacher Interviews. These interviews provide the opportunity to discuss strategies that can be put in place for improvement.

It is important that students are part of these conversations. Ultimately, the student must implement the changes and do the work. However, more importantly, by being included in the conversation, the student/teacher relationship positively develops. Interviews for Wednesday can still be booked through Parent Lounge.

During the week, I met with all year levels and reinforced the message of being prepared. This is a short term with many disruptions due to public holidays, school events and NAPLAN. Therefore, it is vitally important that students commence their preparation, planning, and revision. Furthermore, students should:

  • Prepare their study timetable
  • Plan how to use their study time effectively
  • Plan how they will work toward their assignment draft and due dates
  • Set their academic goals for the term
  • Prepare to work hard

Ultimately it is up to each student to take responsibility for their learning. The College is here to work with each student on their academic journey. There are several initiatives that students can access to assist with their studies:

  1. Assessment calendars have been distributed to students to assist with their planning. These can be found on SPIRE and the College App.
  2. Staff tutoring is offered to students by our generous staff. The staff tutoring list can be found on the College App.
  3. Study Group is available every day to Years 11 and 12 students only.
  • Morning sessions: From 7.30am in rooms 422 / 423.
  • Afternoon sessions: From 3.15-5.30pm in room 5.15

Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

Welcome to Term 2! The Year 10 cohort has returned refreshed from the Easter break and is already back into the Waterford routine. I would like to thank our teaching staff and the many parents, caregivers and boys who connected to share information via our Parent/Teacher Interviews on Tuesday. We hope this provided you with an opportunity to engage with your son’s teachers and receive feedback regarding their academic performance. Many of the boys have embraced the academic opportunities offered at Waterford and have achieved outstanding results. Some boys are still a work in progress, and with your support, we will continue to challenge them to be the best they can be.

Our boys have been introduced to a couple of volunteer opportunities for this term. The first is the St Mary’s of the Cross Homework Club. This experience involves the boys’ helping students with their homework at St Mary’s Catholic School. Homework Club is run during Weeks 2 to 5, every Tuesday from 3.15 to 4pm. School transport is included to and from the venue. Spaces are filling up, so if your son is interested, please ensure they see Miss Awabdy at Waterford Student Services to arrange this before Friday 22 April.

Head 2 Heart Camps is another opportunity from 13 to 14 May. Head 2 Heart is an initiative run by Edmund Rice Camps in partnership with All Hallows’ School. Together with All Hallows’, our students will assist in delivering an overnight camp at Waterford, hosting students from various ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, who would not usually get the opportunity to participate in camps away from home. It is a fun experience that helps our students build their leadership and teamwork skills. The camp will involve training on Thursday 5 May and Thursday 12 May. The camp is run from 13 to 14 May. Students are required by Edmund Rice Camps to be vaccinated to participate.

Regular classes for the Year 10 students will cease during Weeks 8 and 9 of this term so that all students can participate in an Immersion unit. We believe the Immersion experience plays an integral role in the development of our young men at Waterford. In June, they will embark on an experience that will spark their curiosity, inspire their desire to know more about their world and contribute to their growth and formation. In Term 1, your son was advised of their Immersion allocation via their student email. Over the coming weeks, you will begin to receive information from Immersion providers.

I look forward to another rewarding term with this cohort. I challenged the boys at our first assembly yesterday to grab all opportunities with both hands and make the most of them. This term will go quickly with six weeks of teaching and learning, a week of exams, and two weeks of Immersion to finish at Waterford.

Grease is the Word – tickets on sale

This year Terrace and All Hallows’ are proud to collaborate on the musical Grease. Over 100 students have worked very hard to stage this musical through hardships not faced before. I am pleased to say that the production will make you feel you are on Broadway before remembering it is a school production. Grease will be performed from 4-7 May at the Garden’s Point Theatre QUT. Tickets will be on sale late this week via College Events.

ABC television to feature the Red Thunder Drumline

This weekend members of the Red Thunder Drumline will join 90 other drum kit players to film ABC television's 90th birthday television commercial. While initial planning saw the drumline with a passing moment, rehearsal footage sent to the ABC saw a new direction where our drummers will now be featured in a 60-second edit. This campaign will also see a 90-second commercial featuring 90 drummers in Brisbane, 90 singers in Uluru, 90 dancers in Sydney and 90 school children. The commercial will start airing in July this year.

Holiday workshops

With a disrupted rehearsal schedule, the holidays proved even more essential for our annual workshops. The workshops held these holidays included our top Chess players taught by a Grand Master, Debating Years 8-12 workshops and skill development, Anzac Band practice, Pep Band practice for the upcoming Football season and the musical sizzle and workshops. It was great to see the staff and students having so much fun.

Queensland Music Awards recognition

Two in our Terrace Family received accolades at the recent Queensland Music Awards. We would like to acknowledge and congratulate Mr Adrian Head (Specialist Music Tutor) and Liam Keates-Ryley (GT 2020), currently studying at the Conservatorium of Music. Liam provided the keyboard for the Youth Artist of the Year winner, and Mr Head conducted his ensemble. The Ady Ensemble won the 2022 Contemporary Classical award in collaboration with Corrina Bonshek.

Debating

QDU debates continue this term, heading towards the finals. Due to the many changes to the original schedule, we encourage all students to check with their coaches to ensure they have the correct night and correct topic for their debate.

Theatresports

Theatresports start this term. Please register via the Parent Lounge if you would like to be involved.

Honour Pockets 2022

Honour Pockets are available for students in Years 11 and 12 to recognise their participation and/or performance in College activities in any year level, provided their character and conduct meet the standards expected of a Gentleman of Terrace.

If you have any queries regarding your son’s eligibility, please check the 2022 Student Diary, pages 133 and 134, to ensure that he has met the criteria.

A Symbol of Resilience and Hope - Music in times of war

As a Terrace Family, we pause to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms that we enjoy today. Given current global events, there is no question that war is one of the most difficult times for both nations and individuals.

Throughout history, music has played a prominent role in times of conflict, whether to assist soldiers in coping with the traumas and stress of war, for those at home worrying about their loved ones, or as a reminder of what they are fighting for and lifting morale.

The use of music in this manner dates back to biblical times. However, it was brought to the forefront during WWI and WWII. While the instruments of warfare are constantly changing, the message that music brings during wartime has remained the same.

We'll Meet Again was a song recorded and co-written by Dame Vera Lynn in 1939. Its lyrics provided connectedness to those separated by the war—simple words with a powerful message.

We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.

Lynn remarked in a speech in 2005 during the 60th Anniversary of VE Day.

We should always remember, we should never forget, and we should teach the children to remember.

Lest We Forget.

Anzac Day march

On Monday, the Terrace Marching Band will perform as part of this year’s Brisbane Anzac March. Due to COVID, there is a limit to the number of bands participating in the march. Terrace is fortunate to have been selected as one of the performing bands. The Terrace Marching Band will lead various Royal Australian Navy Associations in the march, commencing at approximately 10am. I warmly invite the Terrace Family to come and support the Terrace musicians as we honour the Spirit of the Anzacs.

Holiday workshops

The holiday break was a productive and busy time for many musicians within the Terrace Music program. Over two days, musicians from SWE, Red Thunder Drumline, Concert Band 2 and Percussion Ensemble 2 honed their skills in preparation for upcoming performances, most notable the Anzac Day March and Pep Band.

State Honours Ensemble Program

Congratulations to the 56 Terrace students who have been selected for the State Honours Ensemble Middle School Program (SHEP). This program connects the finest musicians from several schools into various ensembles, including Wind Orchestra, String Orchestra and Vocal Ensemble. Students are presented with the rare opportunity to work with national and international conductors.

Music Practice Hall

Music Practice Hall will return on Monday 9 May in the Music Centre located on level 3 from 3.15-5pm.

The Music Practice Hall program is open to all students from Years 5 to 12. The program is designed to assist boys in mastering the skills required on their respective instruments within the parameters of establishing effective and productive habits within their practice, assisting boys in succeeding.

Director of Sport | Mr Tony McGahan

Welcome back to Terrace Sport for Term 2. Our Tennis, Football and Cross Country programs start the GPS competition and preseason commences for Basketball and Rugby.

Terrace Sport has been busy over the Term 1 holidays, with activities spread across both weeks.

Cross Country

Cross Country had two days of preparation on the first two days of the school holidays. Day 1 started at the Gold Coast and finished at Terrace in the afternoon with guest speakers. Day 2 was at Limestone Park, familiarising the team with the GPS Cross Country course and then back to school for a history lesson on Terrace Cross Country. Well done to Mr Anthony Baruksopulo and Mr Damien Jefferies, and the coaches for their time over the holidays. Cross Country Meets resume this Friday. The GPS Cross Country will be held on Thursday 19 May.

Tennis

Mr Blair Copelin and Mr Graeme Brimblecombe ran the High-Performance Tennis camp at Caloundra beach from Sunday to Thursday on Week 1 of the holidays. Around 34 Tennis players from the 1st IV down attended the four days, which have become an important part of the Tennis program. Round 1 against ACGS is at home this Saturday and starts the Tennis season.

Football

Congratulations to Mr Mitch Edwards, who has been hard at work for the past two months running the forty plus team program around Brisbane with no home training facilities and no internal trials. The Football program ran camps in the first week of the holidays and was well attended. Week 2 consisted of the EREA tournament at Nudgee, which provided quality games before the season started. The 1st XI completed their preseason program at Twin Waters at the Gold Coast before Round 1 against ACGS this Saturday. Please note we will be away for Round 1 (ACGS) and Round 2 (BBC) for Football. Please make sure you read the App for game times and locations.

Basketball

Basketball ran an Emerging Program in the first week of the holidays, which was well received by the players and staff. Alongside the on-court program, other off field activities included:

Basketball theory

  • Working through the characteristics of a good team, a good player and a good substitute.

Nutrition session

  • This session focused on pre/post training and game nutrition and the energy intake from food required for athletes to be at their best.

Flexibility/Recovery session

The objective for the post game recovery session held was to:

  • Provide an introductory experience to the different forms of active recovery methods
  • Promote muscle relaxation and post-game recovery
  • Enhance feelings of wellbeing and psychological balance

Rugby

Riverside Bulimba was the location for the preseason A/B Rugby camp in Week 1 of the holidays. A great venue and excellent attendance allowed the players a jump start on the preseason with an already disrupted Term 2 given conditions at Tennyson. The 1st XV Camp at Tallebudgera followed the two-day camp with 60 players. Mr Tyron Mandrusiak has been working hard with logistics for the preseason camps and training for the first part of the Rugby preseason. Again, please read the correspondence on the App around training times and venues as Tennyson is not available.

Congratulations

Terrace sport would like to congratulate Edward Ince (Year 10) for his selection in the Under 17 squad for Football Australia and Jack French (Year 11) for his selection in Water Polo Australia's Youth Squad. Congratulations also to Hunter and Phoenix Trego (Year 11) who have been selected to represent New Zealand in basketball at the FIBA 2021 U16 Asia Cup (postponed to 2022) and FIBA 2022 U17 World Cup. Both Hunter and Phoenix played 1st IV last year in Year 10.

Have a great Term 2 in Terrace Sport.

Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Harry Lane

As the first Captains’ Corner back from Term 1 holidays, I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved recharge with friends and family after the pressures of a busy Term 1. During this Easter break, I was fortunate enough to visit several different places throughout Queensland, ranging from the beach to rugby fields to the country. Over these two weeks, I spent time with my family, close mates, and some people I had never met. During this period, I had a small epiphany - change is constant in everyone’s lives. And the fear of change is also a constant. But we forget that change can be positive.

A young Terrace Gentleman’s life from Years 5 to 12 comprises enormous change, and typically this will include a reasonable mix of both good and bad. The work does get more challenging. Change permeates every student, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The annual school photos, and not to mention the increasing size of our lunches, provide ample evidence of the physical change. It is no surprise that schoolwork gets harder in both difficulty and volume over the years, but the fact that we move through the years with varying levels of success suggests that we have changed and continue to change mentally. And on the emotional front, friendships develop and evolve, family circumstances change, and we have all had to deal with the highs of success and lows of disappointment in various forms.

From my viewpoint, there have been times when I haven’t made a certain team, didn’t get an invite somewhere, received a disappointing school result, or merely just wasn’t considered good enough for something. If we don’t change, we remain the same. We can let life’s disappointments hold us down or accept that these will constantly happen throughout our lives. The recent holidays gave me perspective on the experiences and memories created contributing to positive change. It also reinforced how precious and short our journeys at Terrace truly are. The final point I make this week is that when change has us at our lowest, value how blessed we are to have all these people around us and how their presence in our life can make us feel special, even for just a few seconds. Change the way you look at things and embrace the change!

TLG

Welcome back to Term 2. It is going to be a jam-packed term with several large functions, year level social gatherings, Mothers' weekends away and Father/son camps. We hope you are able to join in the fun and festivities.

Mothers’ High Tea

We are looking forward to Friday 29 April, when the 2022 Years 5-9 High Tea will be held at Victoria Park. This event has coined the phrase #friendraising, with the day centred on connecting and reconnecting with fellow Terrace mothers. In our busy lives, this day offers time to sit, talk and meet new people.

There are no raffles on the day - just prizes. Our generous donors of prizes include:

  • La Roche Posay
  • Piper Heidsieck
  • Heart Space Beauty
  • Berkeley Interiors
  • King Street
  • Bagstrap Australia
  • Cosmetic and Fragrance Direct

The TLG has donated the main prize - a Crystalbrook Vincent Properties voucher and Howard Smith Wharves voucher.

Tennyson Canteen in Term 2

As you are aware, our Tennyson canteen and BBQ suffered damage due to the floods. The College is in the process of repairing these structures. Our home games at Tennyson will be delayed.

When the time comes though, volunteering during the sporting seasons is a terrific way to meet fellow parents and actively participate in the Terrace community! No skills are required. All you need is a sense of humour and a smile to greet the hungry customers.
