Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Last week was a significant one for the College’s Music program with over 700 Terrace students performing in the Queensland Catholic Schools’ Music Festival. The Terrace musicians performed spectacularly with 9 Gold, 14 Silver and 6 Bronze medals awarded. Congratulations to all performers, the staff and music tutors and Terrace Performing Arts for their ongoing support of the Music program at Terrace.

We are now very much at the business end of the term with assignments due and Term 3 exams just around the corner. Good planning over the coming weeks will be essential as our students juggle assignments, study, co-curricular commitments, and family life.

The Year 10 students complete their exams this week and begin their Immersion Program next week. The Immersion Program is an important part of the journey at Terrace and I wish all Year 10 students and staff the very best as they participate in activities in Brisbane, Maroon, Northern Australia, Fiji, East Timor, and India. I am sure that over the coming weeks many photos of the various immersions will be circulated. Good luck to all Year 10 students.

Next week is also important for our Year 12 students who will sit the QCS test on Tuesday and Wednesday. Year 12 students across the State will sit the four exams that comprise the QCS test. Our Seniors have been working extremely hard throughout the year, including during public holidays and weekends, in preparation for the QCS test. They are well prepared and on behalf of all members of the Terrace Family I wish them all the best on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tonight, the Year 9 2018 Subject Selection Evening will be held. This is an important time for the students and their families as they prepare for their first subject selections in their educational journey. My thanks to the staff who guide and advise the students through this process.

As part of the communications strategy for the OP to ATAR process scheduled for 2020, QTAC is holding a series of information sessions for current Year 9 parents to summarise ATAR and how it works. They will be held at the QTAC offices at Level 4, 154 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane and are extending a series of invites to schools in the Brisbane area to see if their Year 9 parents would be interested in attending. The ’Parents' Power Hour’ sessions cover off on a range of topics relevant to the ATAR conversion in 2020 including eligibility, pathways, inter-subject scaling, subject choices and MTPATH – the new QTAC tool which assists students and schools in study planning. Year 9 parents can register for the session of their choice. There are four sessions and the dates and links to register can be accessed through the College App. Refreshments will be provided and the Power Hour is complimentary, however bookings are essential and each session will be limited to 50 attendees. A range of information and resources is also available of the QTAC website (qtac.edu.au) for parents who are unable to attend.

This weekend we travel to Brisbane Grammar School for Rugby and Basketball. I wish all teams the very best and remind all players that it is important to play with passion and competitiveness but it is even more important to compete with the highest level of sportsmanship. Good luck to all players.

Finally, this week I remind the Terrace Family that I am taking some Sabbatical Leave from the College commencing Friday 1 September 2017. During my four-week absence, Mr Chris Ryan will be the Acting Principal and Mr Damien Fall will assume the role of Acting College Dean. I know that both gentlemen will fulfil these roles admirably. I am looking forward to my time away which includes spending time with Edmund Rice International in Geneva and visiting the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Staff News

Best wishes to Mrs Jan Cameron who has now commenced her long service leave for the remainder of the term and is spending the time on some overseas travel. Thank you to Mrs Judy Ariotti who is both taking Mrs Cameron’s classes that she job shares with her and also also acting as Academic Administrator doing daily supervisions and exam timetables.

Welcome back to Mr Damien Fall this week who has returned from long service leave. Mr Fall is working with Dr Carroll and I for the next while until Dr Carroll goes on leave in Week 9 of this term and returns in Week 3 of Term 4. Mr Fall will act as College Dean during this time while Mr Cuddihy continues as Acting Dean of Students and Mr Hellyer continues as Acting Dean of Waterford.

Thank you to Mrs Lindsey Maher, Coordinator of French for her excellent care and organisation of our six exchange students from France in recent weeks. Thank you to all of the Terrace families who welcomed these boys into their homes. Thank you also to all of the families who recently assisted when our guests from Konan High in Japan came for a brief visit, your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mrs Mary Cassidy, Coordinator of Japanese for her excellent organisation and care as well.

Thank you to the wonderful Waterford staff for their preparation and organization for the upcoming Year 10 Immersion Program. These are truly incredible opportunities made possible through the expertise and dynamism of our Waterford Team. Thank you to the families of the staff who are travelling overseas and throughout Australia to make this opportunity possible.

Our prayers and thoughts are with Mr Geoff Ludlow who has recently been released from hospital after an operation on his back. Mr Ludlow is recovering well and we wish him all the best.

The College is presently advertising for two Year 5/6 teachers for the commencement of 2018. A fifth Year 5 class is being added in 2018 and subsequently a fifth Year 6 group in 2019. These applications close this Monday 28 August.

Exam Timetables

Exam timetables have been issued to all students. These documents are crucial in planning strategically for a student’s exam revision. I encourage all students to use this document wisely so that they are fully prepared for exam in the final weeks of this term. I remind boys that all learning required for each subject is listed on the Checklist in Moodle. I encourage boys to treat the checklist as an exam and to use pen and paper and answer each of the required learning facts. This strategy has proved to be most successful for many students. Where applicable, revision booklets and sheets have been issued to the boys which provides another source for targeted revision.

Queensland Core Skills test

Next Tuesday and Wednesday our Senior students will attempt two days of testing across four papers- the Writing Task, Multiple Choice 1 and 11 and the Short Response Item paper. We congratulate our boys on their dedication to their preparation for these exams and their willingness to give their best. We wish them well in these demanding days. A reminder that all Year 12 students need to be at school by 8am.

Immersion

We wish our Year 10 students all the very best as they embark upon their Immersion. My thanks also to the many staff who accompany the boys on these most fulfilling experiences and allow these wonderful opportunities to occur. Immersion units this year are – Beyond Borders, Cape York , India, Fiji, Timor Leste , ACU, Career Pathways , Outdoor Education, Photography and the US exchange. We look forward to hearing about these Immersion experiences when the boys present in the final week of the term.

Year 8 | Subject Selection

A reminder that this evening is our subject selection for students in Year 8. Boys will have presentations from each of the electives being offered- Business Education, Drama, French, Graphics, Technology A (workshop), Digital Technology, Japanese, Music and Visual Art. From these subjects, students will need to select two subjects that they wish to study next year. The selection will be made electronically and boys will be given instructions on how to complete their preferences.

Reflection

Below is a reflection from a current student when asked an opinion on what it is like being a student at Terrace:

A Terrace Gentleman is motivated by a cause, a purpose. He works hard for his cause and is willing to do everything for his cause, whether it be being the best Rugby player or getting that extra A on their report card. He also places himself in an environment where the people around him want to help him reach his goal. He is willing to work with ‘blood and sweat and tears’ for the result.

We are indeed blessed with the wonderful young men in our community.

As a teacher, but more importantly as a father of two teenagers, I find developmental literature on children an interesting topic. Every time I read an article, I can always identify ideas that could be reconsidered in my own context. It’s often things we already know and believe in but for one reason or another they have fallen off our parenting radars for a period of time. Recently, I read an article from The Gottman Institute called, 10Insights of Remarkable Parents from a Family Therapist (foundhere.) There were two insights that stood out to me.

Firstly, kids will act like kids. ‘Immature behaviour is normal for immature human beings with immature brains’. The part of the brain responsible for reason, logic, and impulse control is not fully developed until a person reaches their early 20s. As parents, we need to be patient and supportive in order to guide our children when they experience times of struggle. The focus needs to be on the learning opportunities that present as a result of these actions.

The second interesting insight was the concept of ‘setting the overall goal to shape the child’s heart and not just their behaviour’. Central to values that underpin our Pastoral Care program at the College is the need to develop right relationships within our community that that have the values of empathy and compassion at its core. The College aims to promote these values through a range of programs and activities such as the House system, Immersions and Retreat programs at Maroon.

Whilst the Jacaranda’s haven’t started to bloom yet, it is that time of the term when assignments are being submitted and the focus quickly shifts to exam preparation. The boys need be effective with their time management over the coming weeks especially if they are participating in Term 3 co-curricular programs. We wish our Year 10 students well as they commence their various Immersion journeys on Monday. It’s one of the highlights of the year at Waterford and we look forward to sharing their experiences in the coming weeks.

Our Terrace Stella Fellas

The following is a message from Ben Clark, Tom Dearlove, Tom Waldie and Alex Rice - our Year 11 Edmund Rice Advocacy students who are leading our College’s response to promoting Respectful Relationships.

Recently, seven Year 11s participated in a Social Justice Forum at Lourdes Hill, which focused on the issue of domestic violence.
One in three Australian women will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime, and for those who do, 9 in 10 will not report the incident. Violence against women and their children has a profound and long-term effect, on the victims physical and mental health and wellbeing, and has a flow on effect on their families and communities, and on society.
It is our innate human nature from when we are young to show respect for each other. Treating each other the way that we wish to be treated in not only a sign of who we are as a community, but more importantly who each of us are individually as men. Not all forms of abuse are physical. Emotional and psychological abuse are common and can cause as serious long term effects. What we say matters. Every word we use can either lift people up or bring people down.
Being aware of how we talk to each other every day in the yard and in the classroom, always speaking positively to and about each other, being respectful on the sporting field and to others outside the school grounds, not be a bystander when you hear people speaking disrespectfully, especially about women.
True Terrace Gentlemen always stand up for what is right – stepping up when we hear gender stereotypes being thrown around among friends and not making excuses like “Oh it’s just boys being boys” when we hear others speaking inappropriately about women.
At the end of the Social Justice Forum last week, the Terrace students had the opportunity to speak to Jason Demetriou, a member of the Broncos coaching team, who being a father, further highlighted the importance of being a gentleman and respecting women. He wisely used the quote; “Being male is a matter of birth, being a man is a matter of age, being a gentleman is a matter of choice”.
As a Terrace Family we stand together against all forms of abuse. We are committed to being men of honour and humility, treating everyone, both men and women, with respect and dignity.

This Friday at lunchtime we will be holding a special rugby Gorilla Gathering in line with our theme of Respectful Relationships. Each student at this gathering, including Gregory the Gorilla and others, will be wearing our special bow ties to show that we really are Stella Fellas – that we stand united as a community as true Terrace Gentlemen – that we know the importance of respecting each other, but especially women, and that we will not be bystanders; that we will speak up and be men of action when we are called to do so.

The Good News of Terrace – Our Year 5s exploring Positive Friendships and Models of Charity through the stories of Jesus and Edmund Rice.

Exam week has been progressing well at Waterford after what’s been a fairly fast paced academic term for the cohort. The individual Immersion groups will meet on Thursday to pass on any final details relevant to the immersions. Next Monday on 28 August, all Year 10 students will commence the Immersion with a Retreat day at Waterford, based around the leadership theme. The exception to this will be the Outdoor Education Immersion group who need to make a start on the Immersion programs proper that day. The final day of Immersion 2016 will be the Presentation Evening on Wednesday 13 September. Year 10 students will not be required at school on Thursday 14 of September (which is the final day of term for all Terrace students). I am looking forward to being away with the Cape York group for much of the Immersion program and all communication, as normal, can be made through Student Services at Waterford Place. The afterhours emergency contact number during this period is 0411 157 452. This number will be monitored by Mrs Quinn. I’m looking forward to seeing the boys grow from their experiences over the next few weeks.

Week 7 often sends the ‘alarm bells ringing’ once boys realise that every day counts and time is running out for Term 3. The mistake that can be made is that 100% is placed into assignments but the exams that are fast approaching are ignored. Students need to juggle the three academic areas each night:

1. Homework
2. Assignments
3. Revision

Students should be revising by using the checklist booklet that was provided to every Year 7-9 student in the first week of term. The Head of Faculty for each exam subject has highlighted very specifically what should be revised. This helps provide direction when students study these subject areas.

A variety of study techniques are taught directly in our Formation Program such as Roll Call, Work the Corridors, how to memorise effectively, mind maps, flash cards, flow charts, recite, re-read,

re- write highlighting, end of chapter reviews and setting self-tests.

QDU Debating

Congratulations to our successful 10.1 team - George Bozikis, Declan Hackett, Cyril Mathews, Scott Moran and Alex Sullivan – on their win last in the Grand Final. After a long season, these young men ended their season in the best possible way.

With only Years 5-7 still debating in the QDU Junior competition, I would like to thank our staff and Old Boy coaches who have mentored our intermediate and Senior students throughout the year. We are very privileged to have our Senior students return to work with our younger students. If any of our Seniors would like to return to coach next year, please meet with Mr Stormonth before the end of term.

Theatresports

We have two teams through to the Youth Theatresports Grand Final after the win by our Senior team on Tuesday night. Best of luck to all our students who will compete in October in the final at La Boite Theatre. Tickets for the finals will be available soon.

Chess

Congratulations to Chess Champion Hughston Parle who has just been selected for the number 1 Board of the Australian U16 Chess team to compete in India.

Great Results from QCMF

Thank you to the 719 students who represented Terrace in 29 ensembles at the Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival this weekend and a special thanks to the parents who really make this happen behind the scenes. Your support and encouragement of your children makes a large part of the success of the program.

Our Support Groups play a very important role at Terrace – helping in numerous ways. One way that we support them to support us is by purchasing the 2017/2018 Entertainment Book (please see the link to the end of the edition or click here). Last weekend we had 29 ensembles participating in the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) at Villanova College. We had some very good results over the weekend and I would like to thank all the students and conductors for their hard work in preparing for this event, and thank all parents for the support of your sons’ musical endeavours.

The following students have achieved some great results in the Enoggera Eisteddfod. Gabriel Kolakowski (Year 7) performed an accompanied violin solo and was awarded Highly Commended in his Section (11-12 Years String Performers). Matthew Cho (Year 9) performed a flute solo and won his Wind/Brass Section (Performers of 11-14 Years). Matthew has been invited to perform at the Prizewinner’s Concert in September. Congratulations to the students, their accompanists and teachers.

Congratulations to the Terrace Guitar Ensemble, and their director Mr Toby Loveland, for their performance on College Assembly this week.

Applications for the 2018 Young Conservatorium programs have now opened. The closing date for the main 2018 intake is Saturday 9 September 2017, with applicable auditions being held between 3 - 21 October 2017.

Talkin’ Jazz will be holding a performance workshop, for interested students, at the Brisbane Jazz Club during the September school holidays. This is always an exciting opportunity for those who have a strong grasp of their instrument and are interested in learning more about jazz. More information can be found by clicking here.

There are three weeks left for Rugby and Basketball to complete their seasons. It is very important that the boys remain fully committed and focussed on finishing their respective seasons well.

BGS away, TGS home, BBC home – let’s aim for three from there and be proud of the season in full.

Supplementary Games

Some teams will have to travel this week – thank you for your commitment. Unfortunately, a number of our teams will now have a bye as during the week, two schools withdrew their teams from the supplementary draw due to their programs collapsing from lack of commitment and interest. This has resulted in some of our teams now having a bye and playing NC again.

Term 4 Sign On

Parents may now sign their son/s to the respective Term 4 activities via the Parent Lounge.

Competition Phase – Track and Field

The Term 4 priority is Track and Field for all boys. Throughout Term 3, Track and Field has co-existed with Rugby and Basketball, however, it has always had a much lower profile.

In Term 4, Track and Field is in the spotlight and finally takes the limelight over all other activities.

Both preseason Cricket and Rowing will be modified in the first two weeks of Term 4 to allow and provide a clear pathway for this in season sport.

If boys are confused or a clash is occurring then it needs to be clearly stated:

Track and field takes 100% priority

I will often hear that boys will consider that their selection in teams for Term 1 activities will be jeopardised if they don’t complete training session in Weeks 1 or 2 of Term 4. Putting it as strongly as I can – that is totally incorrect and no boy will be disadvantaged.

The Cricket program runs for 24 weeks in total; the Rowing program runs for 22 weeks. For anyone who has ever overseen a program or has had responsibility for the planning of a developmental skills acquisition, the common sense and balanced approach would recognise that missing the first two weeks of Term 4 to complete Track and Field training will have no effect on crew or team selections in Term 1.

In fact, it will enhance the overall movement development and athletic ability of a student.

Track and Field Meets – Term 4

There are two options available for boys to complete at lead up meets for Track and Field in Term 4:

• Friday evening, 25 August @ QSAC
• Friday evening 1 September @ QSAC

All disciplines are available for boys to be involved and I would highly encourage our young men to participate.

Football

The ISSA Cup Team (Under 14) was eliminated at the at the Quarter Finals stage of the competition – well done to these young men who competed so strongly to get this far.

The UHLSport Cup Team (Open) played last night in the Semi Final vs St Laurence’s at Annerley Football Club. Congratulations to these young men. As we go to print, the results are not in however if the boys were successful, the grand final will be held next week at the Annerley Football Club on Wednesday 30 August – playing the winner of the other semi final either BSHS or IGS.

Congratulations to our Terrace Gentlemen who have excelled in Sport outside of the Terrace GPS competition.

Lachlan Steains (Year 10) has just returned to Australia after representing the country in the Junior Youth Water Polo Team in a six-nation tournament in Montenegro, followed by the European Championships in Belgrade. Australia placed 11^th in the world.

Lachlan is now preparing for the Nationals to be held in September. Well done on an excellent and demanding past few weeks representing your country and doing Terrace proud.

Congratulations also to brothers, Liam Walsh (Year 11) and Finn Walsh (Year 9) for their placings in the State Time Trials at North Stradbroke last weekend. Liam won a gold medal in the Under 17 trails and Finn won bronze in the Under 15s.

Good luck to both boys as they go to Tasmania for the National Road Championships next week.

Last Tuesday the Year 12s experienced the excitement of the 2017 Terrace Formal. It was a great night and a well-deserved chance to relax and celebrate what has already been a great year for the Seniors of 2017. Already in the two and a half terms that have passed I have seen the incredible passion of those in the white shirts for Terrace and all it represents. This hasn’t just been the great support everyone has shown at each cultural or sporting event, it has been shown through every action undertaken by those in the white shirt during and after school hours. Whether it was making time for the younger students and their buddies or giving up time in the morning or afternoon to tutor their own peers, every Senior has undoubtedly contributed to the legacy of our cohort.

A lot of the hard work that has been done academically this year peaks next week with the QCS exams taking place. We have worked hard since Week 1 Term 1 in order to achieve our best in these exams not just for ourselves but for our cohort. It is the joint efforts of the entire grade that will determine how well we do this year and it is this determination to do well that has been demonstrated in every workshop and practise exam to date. Our own Dean of Studies, Mrs Quinn, has told us we deserve to do well, and this I whole heartedly agree with. All that is left for us now is to put into practise what we have learnt throughout this year and perform on the two days next week.

While this is all happening next week, at Waterford, the Year 10s are preparing to embark on Immersion, one of my own personal highlights during my time at Terrace. It was the experiences I had and memories I made during that three-week period that brought about some of the strongest and greatest friendships I have ever had. I can only hope the Year 10s this year have the great experiences they all deserve to have and get the most out of their chosen program.

Year 5 2018 Orientation

A reminder that the orientation afternoon for our 2018 Year 5 boys and their families is on Thursday 31 August from 5pm – 7pm. The TLG will be providing some light refreshments, (No helpers required).

Spring Luncheon | 1 September | Hillstone, St Lucia

The final preparations are under way for the TLG Spring Luncheon on Friday 1 September at Hillstone, St Lucia. We are really looking forward to the day, to spend some time catching up with old and new friends alike. Please remember if you missed out on a ticket to the luncheon, you are most welcome to attend the after party at Gambaro’s, Caxton St, Petrie Terrace, from around 3pm, with $10 cocktails (selected), hot canapés and entertainment.

Senior Formal etiquette classes | Thank you

Thanks to the mothers that helped with the Year 12 Etiquette classes to prepare the boys for the Senior Formal. Our Year 12 Terrace Gentlemen really appreciated brushing up on their table manners and making small talk and I think everyone involved had a lot of fun.

You are all invited to attend the September TLG meeting on Monday 4 September. This meeting is the last regular meeting this year with the TLG Annual General Meeting being held on Monday 9 October. At the September meeting we will be seeking to gather ideas for guest speakers and the TLG Mothers’ Retreat for 2018, so please join us and share your suggestions!
