Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Welcome to Week 3. I trust the pupil free day on Monday provided some space for you and your family.

On Tuesday, the College officially opened the Mt Sion Wellbeing Centre.  It was a special day and provided an opportunity to thank the many people who played an important role in designing, building and shaping this magnificent building.  There was a very deliberate decision to retain the names of Mt Sion and Duhig Place in the new building. It was a privilege for the community to hear from Br Tony White, who was the College Principal when the original Mt Sion was built at Terrace. Br White explained how and why the name Mt Sion was originally chosen.  My thanks to all involved in ensuring the opening was so successful.

Today I am in Melbourne with two of our students, Ryan Wong and Ben Zhang and their families.  Ryan and Ben were awarded a prestigious prize in the Australasian Maths Competition.   There were only five students from Queensland awarded a prize. It is a great honour and a just reward for Ryan and Ben.  On behalf of all within Terrace, I congratulate both boys on their achievements.
Next week, the GPS Track and Field Championships will be held on Thursday and Saturday. Our athletes have been training well and are prepared for their championships. The team will be presented at a Spirit Assembly next week. However, it is my pleasure to announce the Captains of Track and Field for 2019:

  • Captain of Track and Field:  Ben McMahon
  • Vice Captain of Track and Field:  Daniel DiGiandomenico

Congratulations to Ben and Daniel.

The launch of the 2020 Swimming season is scheduled for this Friday. It is also my pleasure to announce the 2020 Swimming Captains:

  • Captain of Swimming:  Sam Voltz
  • Vice Captain of Swimming:  Sam Dutton
  • Vice Captain of Swimming:  Terence Siao

Congratulations Sam, Sam and Terence.

With Term 1 sports now in training, it is also my pleasure to announce the 2020 Rowing Captains:

  • Captain of Boats:  Fergus Cummins
  • Vice Captain of Boats:  Tom Daly

Congratulations Fergus and Tom.

Finally this week, I again remind parents and students that this term is rapidly unfolding.  Our Year 12 students have one more week of classes before exams commence and the remainder of the school has just over three weeks before exams commence. With assignments due during this time, the academic journey for Term 4 is intense, so a concerted and structured focus is critical. All students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 received their Checklist document last week, so work on revision can continue. Being well prepared in this short term is critical.

Have a great week.

God Bless.

Dr Michael Carroll

Deputy Principal | Mr Chris Ryan

Staff News

This week we have welcomed Ms Doreen Awabdy as the new Director of Development. She will continue the role of engaging with the Terrace Family around the work of the College Foundation in supporting capital works projects and the Edmund Rice Bursary. We look forward to her contribution to the life of the College.

We are currently undertaking a number of internal recruitment processes and have advertised externally for a full time or part time School Nurse and a part time position of Librarian-Digital Support. Please see the College website under About Us/Careers@Terrace if these positions are of interest. We are also recruiting for teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics and Health and Physical Education.

Congratulations to the following staff on their recent appointments to Senior and Middle Leadership positions:

Dean of Administration | Mr Charles Brauer
Dean of Waterford Place | Mr Luke Gribble
Coordinator of Accounting | Mr James Turner
Coordinator of General Mathematics | Mr Jim Allday
Coordinator of Health and Physical Education (Years 7 to 9) | Mr Devon Naeser
Coordinator of Music | Ms Melissa Herron

Congratulations to Mr Brauer on his significant leadership appointment to this inaugural role at the College. In particular, this new role will lead the facilitation of reporting, timetabling and daily planning and organisation. Mr Brauer brings his senior leadership experience to this role as well as a task-oriented and organised mind! Subsequently, as it is late in the year, Dr Carroll has advertised an Acting Dean of Identity for 2020 role internally. We thank Mr Brauer for his outstanding service to the community in this faith and mission role over the past four years.

Congratulations to Mr Gribble on his appointment as Dean of Waterford Place. This is a key role in the structure and philosophy of the College. Mr Gribble brings his strong experience as Buckley House Dean to this role, particularly as the foundation Dean of Buckley House. He is also a foundation member of the Waterford teaching staff and therefore understands the context and purpose of the initiative well.

Mr Turner, Mr Allday and Mr Naeser have all been acting in the above positions throughout 2019 and we warmly congratulate them for being appointed in an ongoing capacity. Ms Herron takes on the leadership of classroom Music in 2020 and we congratulate her on this appointment. We acknowledge the wonderful contribution that Mrs Genevieve Claffey has made in this role over many years. Mrs Claffey decided to stand down from this role but retains her passion for classroom and instrumental music and will continue to contribute strongly at the College as a classroom teacher.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

The term is rapidly moving past us as we reach the end of Week 3. The due dates for drafts and assignments have begun to get closer. Our Year 12 students have received their exam timetable and have their final exam block commencing 6 November. For every student, the middle of the term is a time of pressure as assignments are due and exams loom. Therefore, it is vitally important to have a study plan that will allow a student to navigate through this period.

I have been reading Deep Survival by Lawrence Gonzales, an American author who examines the characteristics of those who survive and the common behaviours of those who have overcome adversity. While Gonzales mainly examines survival examples from external traumatic events like plane crashes and mountaineering accidents, he does relate what he has found to surviving everyday life.

At some stage this term, each student will feel overwhelmed with the work he needs to do. Therefore, from Gonzales I have adapted a number of his recommendations to survive the term:

  1. Perceive, believe – recognise the situation you are in and ask for assistance from parents, teachers, friends.
  2. Stay calm – with help a way forward can be found.
  3. Think/analyse/plan – get organised and break down big tasks into small ones.
  4. Be present – don’t put off what you can do today.
  5. Keep at it – consistent hard work is the key to success.
  6. Celebrate your successes – stuck to your plan? Well done, celebrate.

Every student can find their academic success. As parents and teachers, it is important to recognise and assist with point one, for without recognition there is no movement forward. For students, take the opportunities on offer – staff tutoring (check the App for details), Study Hall, Study Group. At the very least, listen in class and complete your homework.

At the Year 12 assembly last week I challenged the cohort to sprint through the finish line academically, not just fall over it, as it would be a shame to not capitalise on all the hard work and effort that has been placed into the first three terms; especially as the cohort is well placed for a strong set of OP results. However, all students can heed this concept as it is important to finish well, not only to reward the hard work of the year, but importantly to maintain progress into the next stage of their academic journey in 2020.

All the best for the weeks to come.

Acting Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The first two weeks have moved by quickly and the College has well and truly settled into its usual routines. We have held a number of events recently that encourage the boys to connect with both their House and wider communities. Xavier House held their annual breakfast in support of Yourtown at the Victoria Park golf complex last Friday. Yourtown does incredible work with young people through their counselling, education and employment services.

School TV this month focuses on “Blended families” in a series of short video clips found here.  Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, one of Australia’s highest profile psychologists, refers to the Brady delusion – the notion that everything’s going to be peachy and perfect. The reality is, there isn’t a step-family on the planet that actually works like that. Any family really.

Road Safety

Road Safety is always an ongoing concern for our community. While we have made some excellent progress this year in a number of areas, I need to turn the focus to our pick-up zones on Rogers St on the main campus and Quarry St at Waterford Place. We regularly witness a number of driver actions which increase the risk of injury to students. If you are picking up students from the College please take the following into consideration:

• Obey the two minute parking restrictions in the Rogers St and Quarry St Loading Zones.
• Remain in the vehicle at all times when in these zones and move forward as spaces become available.
• Do not perform U-turns on Rogers St or Water St as this significantly increases the risk of accidents during pick-up time in the afternoon.
• Do not double park to pick students up or to wait for a free space. Please do a lap of the block.
• If your son has a Learners permit and is going to drive home, the change-over would be best done at the Centenary Pool carpark area or down on Water St. It is a less complex situation for learner drivers to navigate.
• Please do not use the staff carpark as a thoroughfare or to pick up and drop off students.

You would have received correspondence recently that next Saturday 2 November is the annual GPS Track and Field Carnival at QSAC. Students wanting to attend this event as supporters need to register at the Sport Office so we can arrange buses.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

Mt Sion renewed

It was a pleasure to be joined by an array of special guests at Tuesday’s Blessing and Opening of our Mt Sion building. It was a wonderful community occasion which highlighted the continued commitment of our Terrace Family with honouring our past in order to build a bright and prosperous future for Terrace. A special moment during our liturgy was the reflection of Br Tony White, College Principal during the 1989 opening of the first Mt Sion building. Excerpts from Br Tony’s reflections are below. His words remind each of us of our opportunity to join together and continue to build a strong and vibrant Terrace Family.

Schools, periodically, become building sites with accompanying noise, dust, disruption and inconvenience…It was thus 30 years ago when we concluded a program that saw the Campbell Centre refurbished, the pool built, Duhig Place made available, the Celtic Cross installed and the first Mt Sion opened. These additions gave us the opportunity to try to immortalise some of Terrace’s precious history by lending some significant names to these new Terrace entities.
In 1988, the Chapel was converted to a staff area and a new Chapel facing Rogers St was built. Finding a name for the new Chapel was not so easy. I had recently been in Ireland and when visiting Edmund Rice’s first school in Waterford, discovered that in 1802, at its Opening, Bishop Hussey noted the resemblance to Mt Sion - a prominent hill in Jerusalem and suggested to Edmund that Mt Sion might be a good name for the new school. Edmund agreed and 186 years later gave us an opportunity to link Terrace - the first Queensland Christian Brothers’ School with Edmund’s first ever School and so we called the new Chapel Mount Sion.
We realised that the Terrace Family then and later would wonder how we arrived at this name and so, we took quite some time in choosing informed wording for the Foundation Plaque.
Mt Sion, the Biblical name for Jerusalem, was the Holy Place for the Hebrew People.
Mt Sion was the name for Edmund Rice’s first school in Waterford, 1802.
Mt Sion is the name for this holy place of St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, the first Christian Brothers’ School in Queensland, 1875
While thirty years ago, this dedication was intended for the then new Chapel, it is equally applicable to this new Mt Sion being blessed today. It is not the bricks or mortar that make a place holy. Rather it is the good works that occur in and from that place that sanctify it.
Those who trust in God are like Mt Sion. Nothing can move it, a rock-solid mountain you can always depend upon Ps 125:1

Acting Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

Last Friday, the Waterford cohort participated in the Your Choicez program. Facilitated by Mr David Kobler and the Year 10 teachers, this formation day wrestled with the question of “What is Manhood?”. The boys engaged in a series of discussions and stimulus information on the topic of masculinity and sexuality. A significant part of the day is allocated to the issue of pornography and the impacts that prolonged exposure to pornography have on the ability to form relationships as well as boys' perception of manhood. The feedback from staff, parents and most importantly, the boys, was that it was a very informative day that provided factual information to help answer the many questions that challenge young men today.

Over the weekend, ten boys from Waterford had the opportunity to participate in the second of the Head to Heart camps for the year, this time hosted by our friends at All Hallows’ School. It was a highly successful weekend and our sincere appreciation goes to the Edmund Rice Camps team for their leadership and guidance. This mentoring program connects our students with a group of boys and girls who struggle with mainstream day to day schooling. Throughout the weekend the boys were matched up with a little buddy with whom they engaged in a series of activities aimed at providing a positive social experience. I have no doubt the Year 10 boys would have been exhausted by Sunday after keeping up with their energetic little buddy.

Pleasingly, a number of boys have signed up for our ‘Homework Club’ on Wednesday afternoons at St Mary of the Cross school at Windsor. I continue to be impressed by the willingness of our boys to serve our wider community.

At Waterford, we are encouraging the cohort to finish the year strongly and to ensure that they are best prepared for the Senior schooling journey that commences next year. The discussion in our gatherings has shifted to the immediacy of the short school term ahead and the current assignment tasks and up-coming exams. We have spoken about having ‘Senior school’ behaviours in the classroom as well as at home in our homework, assignment work and revision.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

With the pupil free day on Monday, we took the opportunity to have our Music Placement Day.  This is a very important process for the Music Department who use this day to not only meet the incoming Years 5 and 7 students, but to listen to them play and therefore place them in the correct ensemble so they are starting their Terrace Music journey from the very first day.  Next year will see the biggest intake of students in these year levels, making this day a very important date in our College calendar.

We have found that this day is a great bridge for the incoming students and music staff to judge the standard – and for the incoming students to know the level of practice and commitment needed to be a member of one of our ensembles.

Thank you to our Engagement Crew of current students and staff who interacted with the parents and students.  The informal setting of a handball court certainly puts people at ease, enabling them to ask questions they might feel embarrassed to ask at other opportunities.  If you have questions regarding the Music Placement Day, please contact Terrace Music via email music@terrace.qld.edu.au or telephone: 07 3214 5273.

Congratulations to Max Mackley and Tom White in Year 7 who participated in the UN Youth Voice Competition and won a spot into the Semi-Finals which will happen on Sunday at Indooroopilly State High School.

Trials for the 2020 Terrace Debating teams started on the weekend with 50 students vying for our top teams.  Trials will continue this weekend.  Thank you to our Debating Coordinator, Mr Andrew Stormonth for organising these trials.

The Interschool State Chess Championships were held at Terrace over the weekend.  With approximately 400 people attending, it was a wonderful showcase for Terrace and our newly opened Duhig Place area.

Our team did really well, considering they entered at the last minute and missed the first round.  However, our final results were quite pleasing with two wins, two draws and a loss.  Thank you to our Chess Coordinator, Mr Liam Herne, for facilitating this two-day event.

Director of Music | Mr Jan Hewerdine

Welcome to Week 3

Congratulations to Hayden Long who entered a musical work for solo piano into the Middle School ASME Composition Competition, gaining second place.

On Monday, we ran our annual placement for incoming Years 5 and 7 musicians for 2020. I am delighted to say that we have a lot of wonderful new musicians and singers coming into the program.

On Tuesday, the College held a Liturgy of Blessing for the new Mt Sion building. Our sincere thanks to the Terrace Choir and the Waterford Soloists for supporting this auspicious occasion.

Tonight, we hold our second Chamber Music Concert in the Edmund Rice Theatre. Along with our top soloists from the College, we have special guests from J Percussion, featuring two of their many fine percussion ensembles.

Celebration of Excellence

The Celebration of Excellence looms large for the department. Next week we will be running rehearsals at the College for the Celebration of Excellence Orchestra, Choir and Soloists each morning from 7-8.15am. These rehearsals are critical to the success of the evening. I ask that all members attend these as a priority.

A crucial component in managing performances and sending out information is through the Parent Lounge. Can I ask that families please respond to requests in Parent Lounge promptly? This provides us with rolls and information so as to best manage equipment, personnel and transport.

Music Practice Hall

A new initiative, Music Practice Hall was rolled out for Wind, Brass, Percussion and Strings on Monday.  We had a fair turnout for this time around. This is held in the Music Centre, from 3.15-5pm on Mondays. I ask that you actively support this so that we can roll it out more fully next year and support the boys in attaining quality practice habits.

For those students who are working towards AMEB exams, a reminder that Music Practice Hall on Monday afternoons 3.15-5pm is an excellent opportunity to work on your pieces and receive assistance with the aural component of the exam.

Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, James Hurst

One of my fellow Vice Captains, Tom Woodrow has a habit of taking selfies. Whenever he is out with his friends or at a sporting event, he loves to take selfies. I particularly noticed this last week, when we were walking up to the Treacy Centre to greet the 2020 College Captains.

For us, this marked the ending of our cCaptaincy. However, seeing the next Captains announced was not a sad event. While we have loved our year, and wish it wasn’t ending, we understood it was time for new leadership. We rejoiced because the College would be revitalised by fresh, innovative Captains. We knew that Dan, Anton, Pat, Noah and Sam would be exemplary leaders, and so we were excited to hand over our duties to them. There was also a bit of excitement that, finally, we wouldn’t have to write Captains’ Corners! Oli, Tom (x2), Angus and I shared a moment of quiet euphoria that ‘we had done it’. That afternoon, Tom took a selfie with me.

It had been exactly 365 days previously that we were standing on the steps of Treacy Court looking out at a school that had given us so much, and that we would be giving to for the next year, just after being announced. I remember my mates coming up to me, congratulating me with a big grin on their faces. I remember the other Captains, ecstatic, pondering their next 12 months. I remember sitting, when the celebrations had died down, being absolutely content. That afternoon,Tom took a selfie with me.

One of the fondest memories of my year was the Basketball premiership game. In the last game of the season against IGS, we were behind the entire game. Then the 1st V dug deep and bled the red and black. When we won, the entire Red and Black army stormed the court and I felt proud of our team and of our school. That afternoon, Tom took a selfie with me.

Yesterday, Tom sent me all the selfies he had taken with me since the beginning of our captaincy. There was a selfie after our first BBQ for the Year 10s, after our first war cry practice, at the end of each term. He sent a photo of us in the car on the way home from school and he sent a photo of the end of a very difficult Chemistry exam.

You may be wondering why I am talking about this. Simply, because of a famous quote: you don’t miss the place, you miss the people. Selfies are often lampooned as bastions of narcissism or vanity, but when I look back at those selfies, I don’t look at myself. I look at the people around me. I remember how I laughed, how I cried, and how I felt absolutely devoted to the College. When I walk out of those gates in three weeks’ time, I am going to remember the joy I shared with so many fellow Terracians. For me, those selfies serve as a reminder that I was surrounded by incredible people, and as a reminder of the times I spent with them.

Enjoy your time at this College, smell the roses, and take some time to remember the people around you, because they make this school.

God Bless.

The VP (Hospitality) is the first port of call for all events requiring the traditional TLG hospitality. Assistance for larger events is supported by volunteers. Duties include:

  • Coordinate and manage all the hospitality at TLG functions (e.g. Masses, welcome morning teas, information evenings and orientation evenings).

  • Coordinate, order and manage the Track and Field Carnival.
  • Coordinate and manage the Staff Christmas lunch.

Being thankful

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to lose track of how amazing life really is. Just a few short generations ago we didn’t have most of the mod cons we take for granted today. We should be grateful for being alive today.

To quote William Arthur Ward

Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.

It is easy to focus on the negative; this is just human nature. It takes a conscious effort to remember how good we have it.
It is not always easy to notice the good - practicing gratitude can provide a small resting place for hope to flourish in our hectic lives.

I challenge you today to feel grateful for the things in your life that have not gone wrong.

In return you may notice increases in physical and mental wellbeing which in turn increases energy levels. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could teach this to our young gentlemen? How different the world would be?

Win, win all round I say.

Parent Volunteering in the Terrace Shop

During Term 4 we are welcoming our newest students to the Terrace Family and we need your help! We would love the assistance of current parents in the shop as each new student is fitted out in his Terrace uniform.

It is a lovely tradition to have current parents volunteer in the shop during this time. It gives new families an opportunity to meet other parents and ask those everyday questions in a friendly and welcoming environment.

It doesn’t matter if you have not volunteered with us before – we warmly welcome everyone who is a current Terrace parent! We will be here to help you and will give you a quick cheat sheet for the fitting process.

We will attend to the uniform fittings from Week 1 Term 4 -  Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8.30am to 2.45pm. On 29 and 31 October, we will need assistance until 5pm. There are two families booked at a time, therefore we need two volunteers for each fitting.

If you are interested in helping us, please put your name down to volunteer via the following links:

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We both look forward to welcoming you.
