Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

By now I suspect we are all back into the term-time routine of homework, study, training, lunches and uniforms. Over the last two weeks I have had the opportunity to speak with all year levels across the school. I have been impressed with how the boys have returned from holidays and have commenced the term so positively. A positive and focused start is the key to a successful Term 3. The Parent/Teacher/Student interviews provide an opportunity to develop strategies for this term and in combination with staff tutoring, are ways of getting those small gains across each subject.

Tomorrow night sees the Annual House Choir competition take place at the Pat Rafter Arena. After a very successful evening last year, the Houses are primed for another great night of fun and entertainment. A reminder that there will be shuttle buses operating between Tennyson and the Tennis Centre to assist with parking. There will also be a number of food vans operating at the arena throughout the evening, however, no food is permitted inside the venue. The House Choir night is always a great evening, and I look forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow night.

As we continue to settle into the new building,  it is tremendous to see the way the students are exploring and spending time wandering through the new areas. The College will host its Open Day on Monday 19 August from 3:30-6pm. This event, whilst providing an opportunity for prospective families to view the College, will also provide an opportunity for exisiting families to see what is happening in your son’s classes and an opportunity to see the Mt Sion building up close. I encourage families to use Open Day to explore what is happening across the College.

The new Mt Sion building looks magnificent and is very practical for both staff and students. Many people have worked very hard to ensure we have such a tremendous facility. One group that has been key in supporting this project financially has been the College Foundation. A significant number of our families, past and present, contribute to the Foundation and are a major reason why the Foundation’s $10m+ 'Join the Journey' campaign, launched in 2017, is now at $10 517 596. This generosity, along with other campaigns such as Giving Day, has ensured that the College can provide quality facilities, as well as continuing to provide a Terrace education to over 20 students via the Edmund Rice Bursary program. My thanks to all who have contributed to the Foundation thus far. If we wish to provide a quality learning environment for Terrace Gentlemen, your ongoing support is critical.

Finally this week, please keep in your thoughts and prayers Mrs Mary Ryan (staff) whose sister Anne Stanton passed away last weekend.

God Bless.

Deputy Principal | Mr Chris Ryan

Renewal and College Open Day

This past week it has been a joy to see students, staff, parents and Old Boys visiting the new Mt Sion complex. The sense of renewal and connection to the fine history of the College is palpable. Mr Charles Brauer has been doing a wonderful job of re-educating the community about the significance of the name Mt Sion in the Christian story and the narrative of Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers. It is no accident that Br Tony White named Mt Sion, the administrative hub of Terrace in 1989, and we are proud to continue this tradition of naming our key governance and community centre after Mt Zion, the place where the earliest Christians gathered after the first Easter and the first school of the Christian Brothers. It is a strong and resonant reminder of our call to the Mission of the Gospel of Jesus and the Charism of Edmund Rice, and it is a privilege in these early days to see the people and relationships of the Terrace Family bring colour and life to the bricks and mortar.

This new life will be celebrated during the College Open Day on Monday 19 August from 3.30-6pm. We are expecting a bumper occasion! All current students, families, Old Boys and prospective families are most welcome to visit the College and to explore the renewed Duhig Place, Mt Sion, new Art rooms, new Engineering rooms and other refurbished classroom spaces. The new sense of arrival from the Rogers Street entrance and community space in Duhig Place will form the welcome hub of this event. All welcome.

Staff News

Congratulations to Mr Innes Harriman who has been appointed to the position of Acting Program Leader: Years 5 and 6 from mid-August until the end of this term while Mr Brendan Ganley is on long service leave. Mrs Kaylene Campbell will be joining the Years 5 and 6 teaching team during this time as well.

Mrs Mary Ryan’s sister, Annie passed away over the weekend after a long battle with cancer. Annie was a tremendous character and community person and Mary and her family will miss her greatly. May she Rest in Peace.

As noted in last week’s newsletter, Mr Gavin Clements unexpectedly had his much-loved father pass away in the UK over the break. Mr Clements remains in the UK supporting his family and organising his father’s affairs. As such, he will extend his leave to include Week 3 of this term. We thank Mrs Kaylene Campbell for staying on for this time and Mr Rob Sweeper who is taking Mr Clements’ Year 11 HPE class.

Ms Manali Trevedi has been working on our IT Services team for the past term in a contract position has gained a continuing position with another organisation. We congratulate her and wish her well. We will recruit for this IT support officer role in the coming weeks.

The College is currently recruiting for the position of Director of Athlete Development. This Activities Coordinator role will work within our sports leadership team supporting development programs across all of the disciplines under the leadership of Mr Tony McGahan, the College Director of Sport. I also congratulate Mr Tom O’Malley who has joined this team on a full time 12 month contract as an Activities Coordinator, focusing on the administration of Basketball and Volleyball while Mr Sam MacKinnon is on a year of leave.

Edmund Rice Education Australia have also commenced the recruitment process for the new College Deputy Principal with applications closing on 1 August.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

Wednesday saw the first of the Parent/Teacher/Student evenings for this term. These meetings are an important juncture in a student’s academic pathway as progress is discussed. However, most importantly, it is the strategies for improvement that are the real ‘gold’ of these meetings. It is essential that each student is able to feel that he can achieve academically to the best of his ability.

Additionally, on Tuesday, PC Group Academic Mentoring commenced. This process occurs at the start of each term. Your son meets with his PC Mentor and reflects on his Semester 1 report and his academic process. Again, it is the strategies for improvement that evolve from these discussions that are most important.

However, strategies are just wishes if there is no subsequent action. Therefore, it is important that you continue the report reflection process by asking your son what the strategies were that arose from his mentoring meeting, discussing the strategies from the Parent/Teacher meeting, and supporting him in implementing those strategies now and through the term.

Term 3 has a number of events and academic parent information nights that will cover a variety of topics. Upcoming dates include:

• 31 July – Year 11 Extension subjects information evening – GT125 theatre 6-7pm
• 5 August – Year 10 subject selection evening – Campbell Centre 6pm
• 6 August – Academic Medal assembly
• 15 August – Year 12 QTAC information evening – Campbell Centre 6pm
• 22 August – Year 8 subject selection evening – Campbell Centre 6pm

Congratulations to the five Year 11 students who entered and excelled in the recent Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition - Kevin Ye (Participation), Matthew Cho (Credit), Patrick Gleeson (Distinction) and Justin Jeyarajah (Distinction). Special mention must be made of Yang Zhang who achieved a perfect score! Our congratulations again to these students.

Acting Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The annual House Choir night is being held tomorrow evening at the Pat Rafter Arena at Tennyson, with the first act starting at 6.30pm. House Choir is our biggest community-building event for the year with about 1400 students and wider families in attendance. I have really enjoyed watching the Houses prepare for the evening, especially the laughter and enjoyment you can hear during the rehearsal sessions. Congratulations to the Seniors in each of the Houses for the work they have done in preparing each House. They have been fantastic in accepting their responsibility in this area. Our vertical Pastoral Care system is an important component of our College and it is times like this that highlight the impact it has had on the College over the years.

I would encourage as many parents as possible to come along and be a part of the night. Adam Cox, in Cracking the Boy Code, discusses how our own positive emotions around boys' activities can often become “magnets” for them, prompting conversation and enhancing connections. It should be a really enjoyable show and our sincere thanks to the Performing Arts Support Group and Music staff for their assistance in planning and running the event.

It has been fantastic to have the Year 12s back on Duhig Place for morning tea and lunch. They have enjoyed spreading out in the winter sun this week. In fact, I think the whole school has enjoyed not feeling as though they are sitting on top of each other during the break times. The new Year 8 area on the Mt Sion rooftop will not be ready for another week.

Last Saturday saw the commencement of the Term 3 co-curricular program with Chess, Rugby and Basketball. We ask our students to set the highest standard for personal presentation and support at co-curricular events. I felt the supporters on the weekend were very good in this respect. However, one area in which I would ask for your assistance is by speaking with you sons about not back-chatting the referee. I am aware of a few situations on the weekend where this occurred in matches. In addition, I would like to remind everyone that all students need to be dressed in the correct playing gear on the weekend. If they are cold, they may wear the College tracksuit pants and Chinook. Formal school uniform needs to be worn if they wish to stay and watch the 1st teams play in Basketball or Rugby. This includes the white shirt and blazer.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

A Spirit of service

Service. We hear it spoken about a lot. In particular, it is the word we use intentionally here at Terrace when describing how we should be with others, both within and beyond our Terrace community. In our Terrace context, it is a word that can often be misinterpreted or greatly overused and undervalued. Within our faith and learning community, service has nothing to do with a master-servant relationship. Becoming servant for a day and meeting the material needs and wants of others is not the 'service' we aspire to enacting and instilling in our Terracians.

In our context, service is discovering each other’s shared humanity, our hopes, joys and struggles, and committing to 'serving' one another’s dignity in order for our shared humanity to become more fully alive. Although a somewhat complex idea to present to our young Terracians, modelling, encouraging and humbly recognising our young men when they truly 'serve' one another enables them to grow in understanding of the spirit of 'service' to which we aspire. At our recent year level assemblies, we have had the opportunity to launch our Service Award to publicly recognise our Terracians who have modelled a Gospel 'service'.

The notion of giving an award for acts of humility can seem somewhat contradictory. I agree! However, counter to this argument, and far more relevant, is the power of affirmation. By affirming our young men through public recognition, we are both forming the individual and our community. We are making a clear statement regarding our identity - who we are, what we stand for and what we won’t stand for.

Congratulations to the following Terracians who have been nominated by staff for enacting the spirit of service to which we aspire. Each have been recipients of an inaugural Service Award:

Year 7: Liam Bienkowski, Will Monckton
Year 8: Henry Gallo, Jonathon Vertullo
Year 9: Daniel Blatto, Blaise Delforce
Year 10: Tom Davis, Toby Mohr, Byron Jackson

I look forward to joining with our teaching staff in further modelling, encouraging and recognising our Terracians who commit themselves to “serving” one another’s dignity in order for our communal humanity to becoming more fully alive.

House Choir

With the biggest whole of College event happening this Friday night, it is important to let everyone know some housekeeping regarding parking around the venue.

• There is NO public onsite car parking at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

• The College will be hosting car parking at Vivian Street, Tennyson and providing a shuttle bus to and from the venue.  There is limited street parking in the proximity of the venue.

• In order to get everyone into the performances in a timely manner, please DO NOT drive into King Arthur Terrace. There will be traffic control in the surroundings streets and onsite and you will be turned away if you do not have a pre-allocated parking pass.

• Public transport is available – Yeerongpilly train station is a seven minute walk to the arena and passenger trains stop at this station.

• Buses are available on routes 104, 105 and 108. The closest Bus Stop is on Softstone Street, Tennyson. This is only a two minute walk to the entrance.

• Please follow all directions of traffic management staff and venue staff.

• Please enjoy the outdoor food trucks and atmosphere. Doors strictly open at 5.45pm.

For those in the Terrace Family who have not been to a House Choir event before, you are in for a treat!  The nine Houses are competing for both the House Choir Cup – decided by a panel of adjudicators; and the People’s Choice Shield – decided by audience votes.  $1 = 1 vote. There will be a change facility at the Eastern side of the Pat Rafter Arena.

To add to the “Eat St” vibe of the event, we have a variety of vendors who will be open from 5pm.

We look forward to once again having a capacity crowd cheering on their favourite House this Friday night.

House Choir Volunteer Help Required

As with any large event, House Choir would not occur or run smoothly without the assistance of a parent volunteer workforce.  We are looking for parents to assist both in the arena during showtime with running and collecting buckets for the People’s Choice Award as well as outside the venue with the drinks and chocolate stall, change table and raffle.  Please sign up via the link https://volunteersignup.org/RBRQE .  Whilst we have set times in the link and outlined roles, if you cannot commit to the whole time but would still like to help, please contact Nicole Hoffmann on TPAChair@terrace.qld.edu.au or 0417793583 and we will work through. No experience necessary for any role and full instructions provided. It is a great time to meet other parents on a fun-filled and action-packed night.

Chess

Congratulations to our Premier Board who won their first round match against Toowoomba Grammar last Friday night.

This Friday night will see our team playing away at BBC.  Please note the following information for our families: BBC has generously permitted the round to start early so our students can attend House Choir.  Therefore, the bus will leave the Chapel at 3.15pm to take the boys to BBC.  As indicated by email, a bus will take students from BBC to the Queensland Tennis Centre (QTC) at 6pm. If your son is not travelling on this bus, parents must sign him out by seeing Mr Herne as a roll will be taken. If parents have any questions, please contact Mr Herne via email: LiamHerne@terrace.qld.edu.au

Debating

The annual Debating dinner is tonight.  Thank you to the committee who have worked tirelessly to ensure this year’s celebration highlights the achievements of our Debating Program. Round 1 debates are on next Wednesday – good luck to all for their first debate!

Theatresports

For those not across this genre of activity, think 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' with students! One of our teams will be performing at Waterford Place on Monday night in the next round of the Youth Theatresports competition. A sea of red and black will certainly help the team.

Music

It is always good to see how our students progress in their musical and theatrical life at the College.   The link below is from our Middle School Musical in 2017 when we performed Shrek Jr. Enjoy!

Thank you to all musicians for your participation in all rehearsals in Week 1. It is particularly important that all rehearsals are well attended in the lead up to the QCMF in four weeks’ time. Thank you to the Red Thunder Drumline for their musical support at Saturday’s GPS Rugby match. The Terrace Rock Band and the Red Thunder Drumline combine forces to provide half time entertainment this coming Saturday along with special guests from Brisbane Boys College at the GPS Rugby match at Tennyson.

This week has seen the Music Department hit the ground running. Additional musical obligations include the Terrace Jazz Combo playing at the Victoria Park Golf Club tonight for the annual Debating Dinner and Friday sees us at the Queensland Tennis Centre for House Choir night.

The Weekly Wrap

Basketball Wrap

Terrace Basketball is on the rise in 2019, in what promises to be the biggest season for Basketball at the College in recent memory. This season, the program boasts a record number of participants with 452 students playing across a record number of 43 teams. The growing participation numbers in the sport points to the popularity and prominence of the sport at the College, which attests to the positive experience each boy has when he pulls on a Terrace Basketball singlet, as well as the strong sense of community within the program during the week and on game days.

 Round 1

Last Saturday saw Round 1 of the 2019 GPS Basketball season start in exhilarating fashion, as Terrace played fixtures against Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS), Nudgee College (NC) and Ipswich Grammar School (IGS) across four different venues. Terrace experienced a successful day on the court winning 17 of the 20 games played against TGS, highlighted by close victories in the 11A and 2nd V, and some dominant wins in the Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 age groups. Thank you to Toowoomba Grammar who both travelled and hosted games at the weekend. It is great to see the improvement and growth of their program which should help to make them a force in future years at the GPS level. It was most pleasing to see the majority of teams competing to the final play on the weekend, a trait that so often defines the results each weekend in GPS sport. This mentality was personified by Terrace 1st V Vice Captain David Eltima in the tense two point victory over TGS. With scores even and TGS on a fast break, David chased down the play to block an almost certain layup and swing momentum in Terrace’s favour in the dying minutes. All players are encouraged to compete like David on each play to proudly represent the school and to lead with their actions.

Round 2

This weekend, Terrace take on BBC in a vital round of GPS Basketball. All basketballers are asked to stay behind and support the 1st V at 12.20pm this Saturday in the Campbell Centre in the ‘Timor Round’. This weekend, the Basketball program is also celebrating the Year 10 age group, who will play all their matches at home at Waterford Place. A reminder that any student who is supporting the 1st V is required to wear his College uniform including white shirt at the game, with no sport or basketball uniforms to be worn.  Good luck to all basketballers representing the College this weekend as the program looks to build on its positive start to the season.

Rugby Wrap

Referees

Many thanks to all of our referees who officiated games last weekend. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated group of students, Old Boys and parents who ensure that the boys play in a safe and well structured environment. Once again, your support of all referees, both ours and our opposition schools is greatly appreciated.

Medical room

Thanks to Dr Ben Forster and his team of parent doctors along with the staff from twelve9teen sports physiotherapy who will once again oversee our game day coverage. The medical room plays an important role on game day ensuring our boys, along with our opposition are in safe hands. The coverage starts from game one and finishes at full time of the 1st XV game. We have sports aids, physiotherapists and doctors on hand to assist with all injuries.

BBQ parent helpers

It has been agreed by the Rugby Support Group that certain age groups will be asked to provide the resources for at least one home game each year. In some years when we have bigger crowds (e.g. Nudgee) extra help will be needed. Many of you will have experienced a similar system in junior club Rugby. Depending on the number of volunteers, we are asking parents to provide a minimum of one hour per season to contribute back to your son’s involvement in the Terrace Rugby program. This weekend the Open and Under 16 parents are asked to assist. Please click on the link: Volunteer Schedule Links

Team Man of the week

A weekly Terrace Team Man is selected by the coaching staff during the GPS season. This is in recognition of any player who makes an outstanding contribution to their team both at training and in a game. Congratulations to all boys on their selection for Round 1.

Confidence in Contact

I am pleased to say that the good majority of our boys have undertaken the Confidence in Contact training over the last two weeks. Please see the attached Confidence in Contact document which outlines the purpose and history behind it.

Confidence In Contact

Captains’ Corner | Vice Captain, Tom Burns

Throughout these first two weeks of the term, I have found myself struggling to begin the term with the same diligence and attitude I finished the first semester of the year with. As I sat at my desk, pondering why this was the case, instead of actually doing any work, I quickly realised this seems to happen every year at the beginning of Term 3. In speaking with some of my mates, many of them have also struggled to ‘kick into gear’ in what is undoubtedly one of the busiest terms of the year. Traditionally, it has always been a common occurrence that students find it hard to keep up the momentum after a long break in the middle of the year.

However, we only have to look around us to see what has happened to our school over this long break to find inspiration to jump into the second half of the year with renewed vigour and a fresh attitude. The start of Term 3 saw the opening of the Mt Sion building and ultimately the start of a new chapter in Terrace’s story. The new building has given a fresh face to Terrace whilst improving many familiar facets of the College, such as Student Services, Campus Ministry, and Student Counselling. For the students, the fresh face of Terrace provided by the new building is able to be viewed as a fresh start to the term with a revived motivation to participate in all aspects of student life, both study and co-curricular. In a new environment, we can be inspired to change our old bad habits and adopt new ones that, just like the new building, will only help our journey as a student.

Finally, seeing such an amazing investment in the future of the College is a timely reminder of the purpose of our school journey. Years after we have gone, the building will still be standing and we will all have moved to pursue different career paths, but students like us will still be on the same path that we are on today. They will still be making use of the great opportunity we have all been given to discover not only our desired career paths but who we are as people. And so, with that, I encourage all students to go All In, use the new building as a source of inspiration and begin Term 3 with a renewed vigour and determination, and as a reminder of the purpose of our school journey.

God Bless.

Why volunteering is good for your health

Friendships can have a major impact on your health and wellbeing, but it is not always easy to build or maintain friendships.

Good friends are good for your health. Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friends prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer needed companionship too.

During your Terrace journey, we try to encourage opportunities to build new friendships and foster those you currently have. One of the ways of doing this is by using parent volunteers to help at sporting and cultural events.

Don’t worry if you have not volunteered before, nothing we do is rocket science, so yes you will be able to help and contribute no matter your previous experience. There is always a job for everyone.

Each weekend your son/s will be involved in one or more school activities. In order to provide for these activities, it requires the effort of many volunteer parents. With this in mind, I would encourage you to volunteer at your son/s activities. Sadly, due to low volunteer numbers, sometimes it means those who do volunteer are often stuck doing so for longer than they would like.

The age-old saying many hands make light work is so true. Even if it is only for 30 minutes prior to a sporting match, your time and effort in making our school hum is appreciated.

On that note, I would like to thank all those parents who will volunteer over this very busy next few days from the Annual Debating Dinner tonight, House Choir tomorrow night or at Rugby, Basketball and or Chess.

We can never thank you enough for giving up your time and helping out, but we can provide fun, laughter, good times and most of all friendship. If you would like to volunteer, please see the links below.

Enjoy your weekend.
