Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is here. We will conclude the school year with our Farewell liturgy, which is scheduled to commence at noon tomorrow. The students will be dismissed following the liturgy.

The year has certainly presented us with challenges and unique situations to navigate, but it has also provided plenty of positive opportunities. What has been very evident is the unwavering support and engagement of all those within the Terrace Family. In both the good and challenging times, we have worked in partnership to ensure that the Gentlemen of Terrace could experience the best holistic educational opportunities possible.

Over recent weeks, I have announced several College, House and co-curricular student leaders. Today it is my pleasure to announce the Cultural Captains for 2022. They are all fine young men, and I am confident they will lead their respective activities with great distinction. I congratulate the following students:

Chess
  • Adrian Jesuthasan - Captain
Music
  • Eddie Heffernan – Captain
  • Lachlan Wood – Vice Captain
Debating
  • Thomas Nunn-Rutledge – Captain
  • Thomas Musgrave – Vice Captain

Congratulations to Year 12 student Ethan Lewin, who won the Best Art Film category with his film She's Going To Be Late at the recent Bond University Film and Television Awards. Ethan was also a finalist in four other categories.

While the students finish lessons tomorrow, I am aware that many will remain engaged over the Christmas holiday break through co-curricular training and camps. I wish all those involved in these activities the very best during the break. I also thank the many staff, coaches, parents and caregivers involved in these activities.

Next week, the staff will remain at the College to complete marking and reporting and commence preparations for the 2022 school year. Reports will be available online from 9am on Tuesday 7 December, and the Year 12 ATAR results will be released on Friday 17 December.

Finally, for this year, I thank all families for their contribution and support throughout 2021. I wish you all a happy, holy and restful Christmas. I am very much looking forward to reconnecting with you all in January 2022.

God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Deputy Principal | Mr Damien Fall

As we reach the end of another action-packed academic year, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all in the Terrace Family who have contributed so much towards making 2021 a success. Both in and out of the classroom, a great deal has taken place and been achieved thanks to the combined efforts of so many in our community. As always, I pass on the gratitude of all families to our dedicated and hard-working teachers who give so much of themselves to benefit the students in their care. I know they will enjoy a well-earned break. As will be outlined by Dr Carroll, several staff will finish their time at Terrace this week, and the entire staff look forward to farewelling them at the end of next week. Included are Mr Geoff Ludlow and Mr Peter Finch, long-serving teachers who enter retirement with a mix of excitement and sadness. I wish all our departing staff the very best, thank them for their contribution, and wish them well for the future.

A group within the Terrace Family who rarely receive the recognition they deserve is our non-teaching staff. This is a large group of staff, numbering around 100, and their contribution to the College is significant and incredibly diverse. Whether they work in administration, finance, book hire, the uniform shop, maintenance, IT, compliance, human resources, catering, development, sport, culture, archives, communications, sponsorship or any number of other important positions, they are the backbone of the College, allowing the teaching and learning process to go ahead smoothly. We thank these special people for all they do. Some will continue to work through the holidays, but I hope that each of our non-teaching staff gets some opportunity to have a break from the routines of College life. We are truly blessed to enjoy their personal and professional contribution.

At Valedictory, we said farewell to many families whose Terrace journey has ended as their youngest sons graduated. We wish those families well and assure them that they are always welcome at Terrace. For most families, who will be returning in 2022, I pass on my best wishes for a restful break and a Holy and Merry Christmas. I hope the holiday season is good to you and that it positions you well to commence the new year feeling refreshed. God’s blessings to all in the Terrace Family, and I look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Dean of Identity | Mr Terry Thompson

Advent

This Sunday, the season of Advent begins. With the beginning of the season of Advent, the Catholic Church starts a new liturgical year. The word Advent is taken from the Latin word, Adventus, meaning ‘the coming or arrival of a very important person’. Advent is the time in which we wait and prepare for the coming of Jesus.

Advent is the time to slow down and wait with patience. This is a big challenge for us. With holidays just around the corner and exams nearly finished, we are tempted to hurry and get ready for Christmas. While it is important for us to be ready with gifts, we also need to be prepared in our hearts to receive the greatest gift, the gift of the life of Jesus.

The next four weeks is time for us to consider and share the messages of hope, peace, joy and love. Every day these messages are alive here at Terrace. When our young men put on the red and black tie, when we form friendships with others beyond our gates, when our families gather as House groups, and when we share time at Tennyson or in the schoolyard, we are being hopeful, peaceful, joyous and loving with each other.

Hope

The red and black College tie is a symbol of hope. As our young men put on their College tie each day, they commit themselves to do their best as Gentlemen of Terrace. They are committing themselves to be beacons of hope for others. When we are hopeful for others, and others fill us with hope, we are encouraged to do our best. Advent reminds us that the birth of Jesus is a sign of hope that God’s promises for each of us will be kept.

Peace

Our Eddie’s Van is a symbol of peace. Our College prayer that we pray at the end of each day asks, make our hearts so human that others may feel at home with us. Each morning, members of the Terrace Family volunteer to cook a hot breakfast and share stories with those less fortunate on the streets. By welcoming others into the story of Jesus, we are signs of peace for each other and our world.

Joy

The House we belong to here at Terrace is a symbol of joy. When we gather as House communities, we celebrate the joy that lies in spending time with each other and being present with one another. Advent is a time for celebrating the joy that lies in the birth of Jesus and his life example of walking with others.

Love

Our Celtic cross symbolises God as a loving presence in our lives. It is no coincidence that our large Celtic cross is placed at the entry to the College. Entering the College grounds each day and walking past our Celtic cross reminds us of God’s presence and his love for us. We are called to embrace our everyday interactions with each other as an opportunity to show love for others.

As we embark on the holiday season, I challenge you to bring hope, peace, love and joy to yourself and those around you in all that you do. I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and what it means for us to be welcoming this very important person into our lives. May the Terrace Family be blessed with hope, peace, love and joy this Christmas.

Lord, as we head into these holidays, we are reminded that it is a time to prepare ourselves for the Christmas season. In a world often consumed with material pleasures, may we remember the true message of the Christmas story and celebrate together in a spirit that recognises and gives thanks for the blessings we already have. It is a time of hope for our families, a time of peace within our homes, a time to show love for each other and a time of joy for the good news that is the birth of Jesus. May we reach out to those in need and strive to create a world that is just and fair. Amen.

Live Jesus in our Hearts…Forever.

St Joseph…Pray for us.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The Senior Valedictory held last Thursday was a very special day for the College community and the culmination of the Terrace journey for the Seniors. It was a privilege to enjoy the final gathering of the Seniors in College Hall, as they shared some words before being farewelled on College Assembly. This was followed by Mass at St Stephen’s Cathedral and dinner at the Convention Centre. It was a fitting end for our families, who have always supported their sons so strongly on their journey.

And so, we come to the end of another academic year. We started 2021, the 146th year of the College, hoping that the year might resemble the usual flow of activities and events. I am proud of how our 250 new students embraced the College throughout the year, showing a great deal of resilience and flexibility in their learning. As an institution based around developing strong, positive relationships, all members of the community have shared the responsibility of growing the atmosphere of care. As with any family, it would be unreasonable to expect a school year without some clashes and low points. Fortunately, the positive times have far outnumbered the negatives, and I would hope that most of our students can reflect on a year in which they have embraced the ethos of the College and made the most of every opportunity.

I am a firm believer in the adage that it takes a village to raise a child. The House system always has been a cornerstone of the pastoral care of students, and it relies heavily on the contribution of a range of influential adults. We are deeply indebted to the pastoral team: House Deans, Dean of Waterford Place, Program Leaders, Mentors, Counsellors, Identity and Maroon Staff whose efforts combine to form the young men we like to refer to as Gentlemen of Terrace. It is indeed a team effort, and we are fortunate to have such a quality group of people charged with the care of our students.

Finally, I would like to wish all our students and their families all the very best for a relaxing time over the Christmas break. I hope everyone in our community can take some time to recharge and refresh after a particularly hectic year. I look forward to a successful year in 2022.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

Congratulations to all students at the conclusion of the Academic year. This year has seen all students striving to be the best academically that they can be. This year, I have been fortunate enough to witness this student effort throughout the year - from the Scholars’ Assembly in Term 1, Academic Medal Assemblies, adapting to GTLearn@Home at different times, hearing the study strategies of students at the improvers' lunches, the perseverance of the Year 12 cohort as they grappled with their Senior studies, through to the informal academic conversations with students in the yard; 2021 has been an academic success.

My thanks must go to the three groups of people who build, nourish and maintain our academic culture. Firstly, the students for their commitment to their studies and recognition of academic success. To strive to be the best that you can be is a Terrace norm. This recognition is a fundamental aspect of our culture and will continue to be recognised and nurtured.

Secondly, to the parents and caregivers. Thank you for your support of your sons and the College academically through the year. Your encouragement, support, assistance, proofreading, and stability are essential to creating an environment where students can function at their best, both at school and at home.

Finally, the Terrace staff have again demonstrated a total commitment to ensuring students are provided with the learning environment, knowledge and skills to be the best that they can be. Teaching can be a challenging profession, especially in the current climate of profound educational change. The Terrace staff have ensured that the student is the centre of our decision making academically and pastorally.

The 2021 Academic year will conclude with the Semester 2 reports for Years 5-10 and the Unit 3 progress report for Year 11. These reports will be available on Parent Lounge from 9am on Tuesday 7 December. The 2022 academic year will commence with the availability of student timetables on the Student Café in the week before school begins.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and restful holiday.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

As the Waterford journey for our current cohort comes to an end, I hope the young men of Waterford look back fondly on their 2021 experience.

And what a year we have had. This year, social distancing and mask wearing have become household terms as we continued to navigate the COVID-19 landscape. This year has proven that rallying together through uncertain times and being a part of a community provided the connection and support that we all need and helped us keep a sense of normality. I hope your son felt that sense of community at Waterford in 2021.

Whether it was building new friendships, volunteering for service opportunities, exploring new limits on Immersion, or delving into new concepts in the classroom, I hope each student takes away something positive from their Waterford experience.

In the new year, your sons will be back on Main Campus, returning to their House. I am confident that the boy who left the Main Campus at the end of Year 9 looks a lot different to the young man who will start his Senior school journey in January. The physical growth is obvious. What I hope becomes more apparent is that your son is more outward focused. More appreciative of the privileges he is given. More conscious of others and how he views them. If you are witness to that, then the Waterford journey has been a success.

To our current Year 9 students, soon to be Waterford young men, I look forward to welcoming you on Friday morning and again in the New Year.

I wish each of you an enjoyable summer break, a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!

Best wishes.

Cultural Captains 2022

Congratulations to the following students who will assume leadership roles within our Terrace Culture program for 2022:

  • Captain of Chess – Adrian Jesuthasan
  • Captain of Debating – Thomas Nunn-Rutledge
  • Vice Captain of Debating – Thomas Musgrave
  • Captain of Music – Edward Heffernan
  • Vice Captain of Music – Lachlan Wood

We look forward to watching these young men work within our programs and grow as leaders.

Terrace Debating

On behalf of the Terrace Debating families, we would like to thank Mr Sonny Ali for his governorship of our program for 2021. Ms Aimee McLean will lead our program in 2022, and we wish her every success.

We are happy to announce our new Senior A coaches for 2022 – Mr Elliot Johnston and Mr Paddy Harten. Both of these gentlemen continue to bring a wealth of debating knowledge to our program. Elliot has been our Skills and Development Coach for several years and sits on the Executive with QDU alongside coaching with the State team. Paddy is well known at Terrace not only as an Old Boy and long time coach, but he is also the winning Year 9 QDU coach for 2021 and the President of the UQ Debating society.

Welcome to both Elliot and Paddy to the role of Senior A coach.

QDU Debating State trials

We had 144 students enrolled to participate in the QDU State Trials held at Terrace last weekend. Of these students, 17 represented Terrace – which was the most from any School or College – including some current Year 9 students.

Of the 17 Terracians, eight have been called back to be part of the top 48 debaters at these trials. Congratulations to the following students: Thomas Nunn-Rutledge (2022 Terrace Debating Captain and Senior A), Thomas Musgrave (2022 Terrace Debating Vice Captain and Senior A), Adrian Jesuthasan(2022 Terrace Chess Captain), Harry Walsh (Year 12, 2022 and Senior A), JoshSullivan (Year 12, 2022), Liam Cleary (Year 11, 2022 and Senior A), Jack Barends (Year 11, 2022 and Senior A), WillAmes (Year 11, 2022).

Senior Musical 2022

This week has seen the first round of auditions for leads for next year’s Senior Production. We are looking forward to staging our production in May next year. Add the dates to your calendar now as all shows sell out quickly – 4-7 May.

Year in review

Once again, we have rearranged and reorganised our Cultural program to accommodate the fluidity of the COVID situation. Our year started with Debating workshops, GPS and QDU Debating, Music camp, GPS Music Showcase, Music concerts and rehearsals for the Junior Musical and Jazz Night. Term 2 saw our Junior Musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, run for three sold-out nights in May. As the year progressed and lockdowns came into play, some of our debates and activities had to be postponed or cancelled. After missing the House Choir event in 2020, we were excited to return to the Pat Rafter Arena at the start of Term 3. Congratulations to Reidy and Kearney Houses, who took home the People’s Choice Shield and House Choir Cup. We also had students in the UN EVATT Public Speaking competition who progressed to the quarterfinals. The annual QCMF competition was held online this year. This meant that all our ensembles submitted their performances to be judged – and we came home with multiple medals. Terrace Chess engaged Gardiner Chess to coach our students this year as we strive to rebuild our program. Moving into Term 4 – the QDU season finally wrapped up with our Year 9.3 winning their year level in the QDU competition and Year 10.1 as runners up in their level. An excellent achievement for an extra-long season. Our percussionists have also had Australian level glory winning competitions over the past month.

Congratulations to all our students, staff, tutors and families for the success we have had in our Cultural program this year. Thank you to our families who leave the College in 2021 – your support and encouragement have helped grow our programs. We look forward to welcoming new families in 2022.

Due to popular demand, please enjoy Terrace's very own boy band in their performance of It's Gonna Be Me at the Celebration of Excellence.

On behalf of our team – we wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

Director of Music | Mr Derek Rose

Quote of the week

Music is what tells us that the human race is greater than we realise. (Napoléon Bonaparte)

Thank you for your support of Terrace Music throughout 2021, an amazing year filled with many wonderful musical moments and memories, which I hope will stay with the boys for years to come. I wish the Terrace Family a safe and Holy Christmas and New Year.

Year 12 Valedictory Assembly

Congratulations to both the Red Thunder Drumline and the Fanfare Team, who performed as part of the Year 12 Valedictory Assembly last Thursday afternoon. Thank you to Mr Matt Cocking and Mr Brad Esbensen for their ongoing dedication and leadership of their respective ensembles.

Year 12 Valedictory Mass

The Terrace Choir is to be congratulated on a fine performance last Thursday evening at The Cathedral of St Stephan as we farewelled the 2021 Year 12 cohort. It was a celebration of thanksgiving for all that Year 12 has brought to the College and was a very moving occasion. The Choir was supported by our talented Terrace String Quartet led by Ms Amy Phillips. I thank Mr Sam Hewerdine for accompanying the Choir and Mr Jacob Bradford, our Choir Director, who has done a phenomenal job throughout 2021 with our Terrace Choirs.

State Honours Ensemble Program Primary

Congratulations and best of luck to George Barnes, William Caro, Max Elliot, Ben Fraser, Marcus Frawley, Alexander Gordon, Harry Hammermaster, Adrian Kuok, Douglas Lane, Matthew Lyons, Nicholas Morris and Chimeze Ngini, who have all been successful in their selection for the State Honours Ensemble Primary School Program (SHEP). This program connects the finest musicians from a range of schools into various ensembles.

Director of Sport | Mr Tony McGahan

Term 4 Sport

Term 4 was a busy and action-packed period for Term 4 sport, from our GPS Track and Field Championship to the preseason programs for Term 1 2022. This summary outlines what has been happening and what awaits over the December/January period.

Track and Field

The annual GPS Track and Field Championship was held at QSAC in Week 2. Track and Field isn’t the easiest sport to coordinate or coach, being the final GPS competition in an enormously busy year. Both Coordinator Mr Anthony Hayward and Head Coach Mr Werner Botha have done a fabulous job this season. You don’t always get validation for the work you have put into a project, but the efforts for the season were rewarded with the Senior Squad finishing in sixth place, the best result in eight years. The Junior Squad achieved their best outcome for the last decade, in third place.

Congratulations to all competitors for your effort and the collective display of support for each other that was evident throughout the day. Special mention goes to Track and Field Captain Griffin Kelly (First 1500m and second 3000m Open), Vice Captain Oliver Casey-Ryan (First 400m Open), and Lachlan Kennedy (Second 100m and 200m Open). These young men ran brilliantly in their respective races, and it was inspirational for the Terrace supporters to watch.

Cricket

The theme for the Term 4 Terrace Cricket program is Learning and Developing the Basics. With over 270 students actively involved in the program, our fantastic coaches are working hard, providing energy and effort into shaping the Terrace Cricketers. Each area of the game has specialist coaches teaching the best practice for that skill, providing the best possible chance for individual and team success for the upcoming 2022 GPS season.

Preseason Cricket continues to provide excellent match play opportunities, from the annual Powder Finger Cup, which the College defended for a record fifth consecutive time, to the inaugural St Joseph’s College Cup. The Beginning of the Baggy Black program was also a huge success, with over 135 boys participating, giving them the opportunity to meet new friends. The Specialist Clinics, High-Performance Camps and Christian Brothers’ Cricket week will keep the boys busy during the summer.

Rowing

The Rowing preseason program has started well, with all age groups recently trialling to give a snapshot of the shed’s ability. These crews remained the same for the BBC / BGS time trial hosted at Tennyson last Saturday. This competition is a great way to sign off on the Term 4 training, leading into holiday clinics and camps for several invited crews. The standard of several age groups has been impressive to date - through their commitment, attitude, as well as general ability in day-to-day training. I know all Seniors, Captain of Boats Bayley Clarke, and Vice Captains Angus Munn and Sam Allen are excited by the challenge ahead.

Swimming

Terrace Swimming has made a determined and successful start to the 2022 season, with great numbers of students consistently in the pool preparing for 2022. Continuing with our efforts through the Christmas holidays is imperative to our success in the new year. Training times over the Christmas holiday period are as follows:

Junior GPS Swimming Camp for 2022 Years 5, 6 and 7 born in 2010 | 21 January 2022 at the Terrace Pool, St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, Free Event

Congratulations to our Swimming Captains for the 2022 GPS Swimming season, Captain Felix Wilson and Vice Captains William Voltz and Ziggy Bickle. We wish them the very best for their final year representing Terrace Swimming in 2022.

The Terrace Swimming Support Group does an outstanding job supporting our swimmers to achieve their goals each season. Each Friday morning, the SSG prepares breakfast for our swimmers on the Mt Sion Rooftop, and they are always looking for parents/caregivers to volunteer to help with the breakfasts. If you would like to be involved with the SSG, please contact our Chairperson, Matthew Voltz (matthewvoltz@optusnet.com.au) or David Moore (davidmoore@remax.com.au) to register your interest.

Volleyball

The Volleyball preseason program has been in full swing since Week 2. With solid numbers in all age groups. We have had over 250 boys involved in Term 4 Volleyball, including 150 in our participation program, the first time we have offered this in Term 4 for several years. Volleyball Director Mr Slater Asnicar has done an outstanding job planning and implementing the program.

With clinics scheduled, there are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in Volleyball over the holidays. Registrations are now open via College Events. Our 1st VI training squad have been working hard under the guidance of Coaches Mr Ben Bell and Mr Cameron Young and now look forward to testing themselves against some of the best schools in the state at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast from 6-10 December. The program extends its thanks to all Age Group Coordinators who have worked tirelessly throughout Term 4 and will continue through the holidays to prepare the boys for the 2022 GPS Season.

Support Groups

I would like to thank the following Support Group Chairs for their time, professionalism and caring approach to their respective programs and wish them well as they step down from their roles. We are fortunate to have such people take on such important roles in our programs, alongside all our volunteer families. I know our directors, coaches and most of all, our boys, are thankful and appreciative.

  • Terrun – Mr Declan Kelly
  • Rugby – Mr Anthony Kirk
  • Basketball – Mr David Hayes

Staff

In 2022 we farewell some long-term staff from the Cross Country program, with Mr John Hinch and Mr Damien Coman stepping down. Thank you, John, for giving 25 years as Coordinator and Damien for giving 23 years as Head Coach. In that time, Cross Country achieved nine premiership wins and ten shield season wins in a row, an outstanding result. The professionalism and caring manner you have brought to your time coaching, organising and mentoring Terrace runners is appreciated. Thank you for also continuing to be available to help the new people in charge for 2022. We also say farewell to Mr Werner Botha, who will be taking a new role with Moreton Bay Boys' College in 2022. Werner has been a great addition to our Sports program in Cross Country and Track and Field whilst also serving as a teacher for the last three years at Terrace. We wish him and his family the best.

Mr Ben Forster – Rugby Program Lead Doctor

With the graduation of Ben’s youngest son Harry in Year 12 this year, we sadly say goodbye to a dedicated member of the Rugby program. Ben has given 16 years to Terrace Rugby, many of these as lead Doctor. The time, care and follow up support for our young men and their families in stressful situations has been most valued. Ben’s understated and friendly manner makes him a significant loss to the Terrace community, but we have been fortunate to have him involved along with his wife, Annie. We thank you, Ben and Annie, and wish you both well going forward.

Seniors 2021

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all Year 12 boys who took part in Terrace Sport in 2021 and thank them for their efforts playing their respective sports at Terrace. These young men have represented the College well, some since 2014. The Terrace community is very proud of you, and in your final year, we want to thank you for pulling on the red and black for the last time.

Have a great December/January period. See you on the sidelines in 2022.

TLG

This year has been a very rewarding year and the TLG is thankful to have been able to focus on offering the Terrace community opportunities to reconnect and socialise again. We are very grateful for the support we receive from volunteers from our very generous community. We are all so lucky to be a part of a school community with such spirit and engagement.

Sponsorship

Back Red & Black

Terrace thanks all our generous sponsors in 2021. We are grateful to all those who chose to be First to Back Red & Black and joined the Back Red & Black sponsorship program during the year.

Anyone signing up before the end of December* will join that group and be recognised with a gold banner on the website and app (see below), as well as receiving two limited edition rugby jerseys (adult sizes). Particular thanks to the Sheehan family, who were the very first to support the program.

*Note you will not be charged before Christmas and can choose your billing cycle for 2022.

College Partners

We also take this opportunity to thank College Partners Nu-Pure and Stanbroke/Peter Augustus. Their generous donations of bottled spring water and quality meats support activities from Eddie’s Van (meals for those on the margins in our local area) to early morning breakfast for our rowers and game day crowds at Tennyson.

Event Sponsors

On behalf of the Terrace Family, we recognise the generosity of the supporters who helped make the Terrace Long Lunch such a fun event.
