Recent media coverage has given focus to two issues of particular relevance to us, specifically, child protection and safety, and the conduct of young men in society.

The first critical issue surrounds the importance of having appropriate Child Protection processes in place and ensuring that these processes are followed.  The safety of the young people in our care is our highest priority, and each of us within the Terrace Family has an important responsibility in enacting these policies and processes.  Our staff participate in annual Child Protection training to ensure an understanding of these policies, and, additionally, the College have staff appointed as dedicated Child Protection Officers. The second issue is around the responsibility we all have in forming young men.  While the academic educational experience is an important aspect of Terrace, of equal importance is the holistic education and formation of students. This formation includes supporting young men to understand how to make the right decisions, how to act with respect and humility and how they should conduct themselves in a range of settings and with a variety of people.  Terrace overtly promotes the formation of Terrace Gentlemen around the pillars of knowledge, wisdom and humility.  Staff, parents and students all have a responsibility to act in partnership so that this development can be both effective and growth providing for the students.  This formation is not static but rather is an ongoing and evolving process. It is also very important that this development responds to the changing influences on young people in today’s world. At Terrace, while an explicit Formation Framework exists, we are constantly examining how we action it in light of ongoing social change. It is not a fixed process that represents some ideological terminology but is active and overt within a student’s journey at Terrace. The appropriate ongoing formation of the Terrace Gentleman must remain a key focus for staff and parents moving forward. 

As we approach the halfway point of the term, it is an appropriate time to revisit the focus on the academic aspect of your son’s journey.  By this time, the assignment schedule is mounting up, particularly for the older students, and the workload is continuing to increase.  This weekend would be an appropriate time to take a moment to have a discussion with your son as to how he is going, whether he is up to date with assignments and revision, and whether he has been using the Checklists that form an excellent revision guide.  It is a time to refocus and take the study regime to a new level.

For our Senior students, the cycle is very different, with the Year 12 exam block commencing next Wednesday.  This is a new routine for the students who are part of the new QCE system, but both staff and students have been working very hard and they are well prepared for these important exams.

The GPS co-curricular program continues with Debating, Swimming, Cricket, Volleyball and Rowing underway.  The GPS Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 6 March and Year 10 and 12 students will attend this event.  The Head of the River is planned for Saturday 14 March, with Year 11 students scheduled to attend this event.

With both academic and co-curricular programs well underway, it remains very important that all students remain focused and that there is a balance between all these competing interests.

Finally, this week, as we mark Ash Wednesday, our attention turns to the period leading into Easter.  The Lenten period has differing significance for Catholics, with some choosing to fast, abstain from meat and perhaps to give something up during Lent.  While some factors have modified over time, the importance of the Lenten season remains paramount in our liturgical calendar.  As a College, each House conducted their own Lenten Liturgy on Ash Wednesday and our Lenten Appeal, currently underway, is another way in which the Terrace Family can engage in the Lenten journey.

Last Friday morning, our Dean of Students, Mr Damien Cuddihy and I hosted a breakfast for the 13 teachers who are new to Terrace this year. We regularly speak about the extensive Formation program that we provide for students, but it is equally important that we also offer our teachers formation experiences. It is essential that we help them to understand our wonderful traditions and what it takes to get the best out of our young men. Understanding our specific context and being a great teacher doesn’t happen by chance. The College is committed to helping our Terrace educators to be the best that they can be. The two goals of our meeting were to gain feedback about the starting weeks of the year, including early impressions of the Terrace Gentlemen, as well as an opportunity to further expand on the Pastoral program that is so important at Terrace.

It was extremely heartening to hear the feedback about early impressions of our students. Themes included good manners, maturity, a genuine interest in knowing the new teachers, a clear commitment to their studies and the hunger to be extended academically. While I often refer to the beginning weeks of the year as the honeymoon period, the early feedback from our newest teachers is extremely positive. We look forward to this continuing as the year progresses. Our next gathering of this group will include input from Dean of Studies, Mr Mason Hellyer, about academic matters and the reporting process. The College is delighted with the professionalism and commitment from our new teachers. We are pleased with their decision to join the Terrace Family.

I often use the term 'juggernaut' in referring to the complex beast that is Terrace. Once the year commences, there is no opportunity to ease into things – we need to hit the ground running. After less than five weeks, it is hard to believe the amount we have already crammed in. Most remarkable is the fact that Year 12 students commence exams in the middle of next week, a part of the paradigm that is education under our new QCE system. Our Year 12 teachers will be busily marking Internal Assessment items for these young men next week, before moving on with their next units of work. All other year level exams will be at the more traditional end of term, meaning we will have two exam periods this term.

Just Do It!

When you first see or hear these three words, you instantly think of Nike, the sportswear company. This slogan has become synonymous as the tagline for a range of products and athletes. However, these three words are not just a slogan. I feel they can be a powerful message.

For example, the alarm went off at 5am this morning (a sleep in for the rowers!) and I contemplated getting up and facing my training session. I would have rather slept in. We all often have that feeling where we would rather take the easy option. However, when these feelings occur, it is useful to disregard your thoughts and just go. I find that if I just get started on a task, in this case, just getting up, I can then focus on what I am doing. What felt like a drag before I got started, turned into positive feelings about what I was about to do.

It is Week 5 of the ten week term, assignments are upon us and exams are just four weeks away. We have spent the first part of the term getting to know new teachers and classmates; identifying new ways of working; getting organised; celebrating our academic achievements and talking about how we want to improve. However, the time for talk is over. Just Do It!

How? Take a small step first. Complete all your homework and start your revision now by doing some questions from last week’s work.  Read back over the notes you took two weeks ago, attend the staff tutoring sessions (timetable on the College App), log your study hours in your diary and ask your teacher for assistance.

For our Year 12 students, exams start next week. This new timing of the exam block reflects the assessment timings required for the new QCE system. Year 12 students began work for this exam block in Term 4 Year 11, when they commenced Unit 3. The Year 12 exam block will operate in the same way as a normal exam block, with students being only required at school for their exams.  Students may work at home or at school outside of exams. Depending on exam load, this presents an excellent opportunity for students to focus on each exam and also continue work on IA tasks due later in the term.

With a busy assessment period looming for all students, whatever you choose to do…. Just Do It!

Term 1 Week 5 means that we are well and truly up and running around the College with our classroom processes and expectations of the boys in the day to day life of the school. It is often the little things within a school that allow us to evaluate our effectiveness in maintaining a tone within the community that is conducive to enabling boys to be the best that they can be. You would have heard that phrase mentioned in a variety of forums recently as it is one aspect of our Terrace Gentleman Formation framework phrases. The four simple phrases within the framework that boys can connect to are as follows:

• Talk the talk and walk the walk
• One person can make a difference
• I am because we are
• Free to be the best that we can be

They are all accessible terms, that are often used on assemblies and in various communications to the community. Each one of those phrases can be used at any level within the College, and our challenge as an educational community is to keep finding ways to present these intentional messages to provide meaning and relevance in today’s society. 

At the Parent Information evenings, I informed parents that the College has developed a new Bullying and Harassment Position Statement, which can be found on the website underAbout Us/Policies. I want to reinforce the message to please open a dialogue with House Deans if you have any concerns with repetitive negative interactions between students. Talking to a House Dean about your concern doesn’t necessarily mean they will speak to the boys involved the very next day. We know that many of you hold fears that talking to the College will make things worse for your son. I can assure you that House Deans are experienced in dealing with these types of issues and understand the complexities that each scenario may present. House Deans can discuss with you a variety of options to facilitate a process to assist in resolving the situation. The key will always be early communication.  

Finally, I would like to commend the supporters at the Senior A debating on Friday night. Both the Brisbane Grammar and Terrace supporters had the privilege of listening to two debating teams execute their high level of skill under the pressure and scrutiny of a large crowd. It was an impressive performance from both teams. Equally impressive was how both groups respected the environment with their support. Less impressive has been the reports that I have had recently about the use of bad language and not standing up for adults on public transport. This behaviour continues to be an area of concern for the College and one which we need to continue to focus on moving forward. Please continue to check in with your son from time to time to reinforce these messages. 

Beginning Your Lenten Journey 

Yesterday, Christians around the world celebrated the first day of the season of Lent through an Ash Wednesday liturgy. Lent is a period of 40 days signifying when Jesus was sent to the desert by God and ending with his death on the cross on Good Friday. Like Good Friday, Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence. It is a chance for everyone to stop and reflect on their own journey of faith. The Gospel according to Matthew speaks of three pillars of Lent:

1. Almsgiving - We are called to give all we can to people in need. That can be by helping or by sharing or by giving generously without the thought of receiving anything in return. 
2. Prayer – Prayer is not for show, but is a genuine time for reflection, for quiet and for connection with self, family, community and with your spirituality.
3. Fasting – Fasting means to go without and to let go of things that we do not need in our lives. It means to cleanse and to simplify. In reflection of Jesus’ time in the desert, we should feel vulnerable and challenged to go outside our comfort zone.

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you … But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you … But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:2-16

Staff and students at Terrace gathered in House groups to celebrate this significant day in the liturgical calendar. At each Ash Wednesday liturgy, staff and students were marked with the sign of the Cross on their forehead and spoken the words, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”. The ashes remind us to seek forgiveness; prepare to change ourselves in order to change our world; and to be committed to a world where all may know the joy of Easter.  “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” is an ancient blessing that tells us to turn away from selfishness and become faithful to each other’s needs.

Growing up in my family, we had a tradition of fasting during Lent. As a family we went without lollies and chocolate. Although somewhat trivial, my parents wanted this practice of fasting to imitate the example of Jesus who fasted for 40 days in the desert. 

Students are challenged to pray, fast or give to those less fortunate during their Lenten journey. With the support of their students, House Deans will be focusing on supporting their friendship groups during this time.

Lenten Prayer 

God who sent Jesus into the unknown, you gather us as the Terrace family to listen to your Word. You sent your Son, Jesus, out by himself where he struggled and felt pain. He was tested by evil and chose your path of love and light.
May we, who seek to bring the best of ourselves to the fore, come to the story of wisdom you have provided. But first, may we be prepared to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, to turn away from sin and to be faithful to the Gospel.
We ask that this prayer be heard through Jesus our brother, who walked in the desert so that we could come home to God.

Terrace Old Boy wins a Matilda Award

Thomas Larkin, GT - 2003 is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, an actor and a Co-Director of Brisbane-based theatre collective Myths Made Here.  He has over a decade of experience performing in notable productions such as Queensland Theatre Company’s Death of a Salesman, La Boite Theatre Company’s As You Like It and Sam Shepard’s True West. He is fast becoming a sought after voice artist who has worked with many high end corporate clients. Thomas’s industry expertise has also seen him develop an extensive portfolio as a teaching artist and as an acting coach across school, performing arts and corporate contexts. 

His interest in theatre began as a student at St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, though he planned to study physiotherapy after finishing school. 

I really fell for drama during my high school years at St Joseph’s College. I had a wonderful teacher, and this really gave me an appreciation of the role quality teachers can play in shaping futures and offering pathways to young people.

Debating King of the Hill - 2019 – 2020

We did it again! Well done to our debaters for winning 10 out of 16 debates last Friday night. I am sure you would have seen our proud Senior A through our social media just after they won the debate. We have a long and proud tradition of rivalry with Brisbane Grammar, who have a strong Debating program. With our 11.1 and 10.1 being victors on the night, we also look forward to a positive future.

Chess goes straight for the King

Four teams from Terrace Chess took part in the Term 1 Brisbane Secondary Inter-School Chess Competition on 25 February, hosted by Churchie.  The teams performed strongly and our Premier team consisting of Captain Yang Zhang (Year 12), Jonathan Hsu (Year 7), Jack Giufre (Year 10) and Joshua Alfredson (Year 9) finished second in the A division.  Another team comprising of one of our Junior A and three Senior A players came second in division B.  The students in this team were D'arcy Long (Year 12), Darcy O’Rourke (Year11), Adrian Jesuthasan (Year 10) and Max Chan (Year 8).  Well done to the boys and all our other teams for a great start to the competitive Chess season.

Congratulations to the Fanfare team under the direction of Mr Brad Esbsensen, for their performance at the Academic Assembly on Tuesday. 

Tonight, we have our first Chamber Concert for the year in the Edmund Rice Theatre at 6pm. This event provides select students and smaller ensembles an opportunity to perform in a more intimate concert setting, as well as providing performance experience for upcoming external music exams.

OneNote

Music at Terrace uses a Microsoft Office platform called OneNote. This software provides us the ability to keep attendance rolls and diary notes for instrumental plus Speech and Drama lessons. The students are provided a link via email (sent 31 January).

Students need to click on this link to access their OneNote file. This also provides parents the chance to see what students are working on. 

Instrument storage

A reminder again of the protocol to follow in storing instruments at the College. We still have a few cellists and violinists leaving their instruments in the port racks instead of the Music Centre.

Most importantly, no instruments should be left outside the Years 5 and 6 bag racks.

In an effort to help you manage the storage of your musical instrument when you arrive at school, can I ask you to do the following please:

• If you play either flute, clarinet or oboe, please keep your instrument in your school bag
• If you play trumpet, trombone, euphonium, alto/tenor saxophone, bassoon, violin, viola or cello, please store these instruments at the start of the day in room MU2, which is located in the Music Centre. The shelving is clearly marked.
• Please refrain from using your classroom bag racks (and walkways) to store your instruments. The chances of the instrument being stolen are high.
• Additionally, we ask that you do not leave your instrument in the walkways of the Music Centre.

Terrace App

A reminder that the Terrace App is used to store and disseminate information such as the Music and Speech and Drama handbooks, the weekly rehearsal schedule and event memos for performances. There will still be some information found on the College website, but it will be of a more general nature. 

Performance and workshop notifications are emailed via Parent Lounge and will be used to ascertain who will be attending performances and for roll marking. Could I ask that you respond promptly to these notifications as we use this information, among other things, to generate rolls and book transport (when applicable). 

Please keep in mind that it is expected that all members of an ensemble participate in all performances, but we understand that from time to time there may be circumstances that prevent attendance. If you are declining a performance, could you also please inform the ensemble director and cc music@terrace.qld.edu.au 

Finally, as these notices only go out to parents, could you please discuss the event with your son to ensure that he has the details entered in his calendar. You and he will be able to view the Event Memo via the Terrace App. Links to Parent Lounge will be mentioned in this Terrace News article as they become available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Music Department  music@terrace.qld.edu.au.

Cricket Wrap

Round 4 

Last weekend, Terrace played Nudgee College in the majority of fixtures, in addition to the number of supplementary games played. Tennyson and the Nudgee flats were back in full swing with chorus’ of appeals, celebrations and applauses being heard across the grounds, a pleasing sound to all following the recent poor weather. The games were played in great spirit, in what was a great celebration of cricket between the two schools steeped in great history and rivalry.
 
Terrace enjoyed successful results on the field winning 22 of the 31 games played against Nudgee. The 5A game resulted in a thrilling tie. This 73% win rate is a strong representation of the development of the Cricket program over time. In 1998, Terrace lost 22 of 22 games against Nudgee, and now, some 22 years later, is able to compete at a much higher level. 
 
There were some impressive wins by many Terrace teams for the round, none more so than the 6Bs who, thanks to a cameo by Luca Rochford, hit 23 off the final over including a four off the final ball to claim victory. Congratulations to Tom Stubbin from the 9As who compiled an impressive 118 not out. This was one of a number of great individual performances, including a significant amount of 50+ scores and three wicket hauls, in all age groups. Terrace won all of the B matches, and all but one C match played on the day, a testament to the depth of talent at Terrace. The 1st XI recorded an impressive bonus point win on Ross Oval as they start to build some momentum into their season.
 
We thank Nudgee College for their hospitality on Saturday and for engaging in another high quality round of GPS Cricket. The program now looks ahead to Round 5 against Brisbane State High School in which the majority of the program will play in the supplementary draw.

The waters of Wyaralong Dam were covered with red and black as the GPS Rowing community celebrated the annual Terrace Regatta. It was a festive day for Terrace, with a high standard of racing across the board with many promising performances, which is setting up an exciting last few weeks of the season.

Volleyball Wrap 

Terrace had a solid weekend against BBC in Round 3 of the GPS season.

Terrace 1st VI hosted the reigning GPS premiers, Brisbane Boys' College. The boys were looking to bounce back after a somewhat disappointing performance against Toowoomba Grammar. This determination was rewarded with a 3-0 win after playing a clinical match, highlighting the offensive capabilities of this team.

The program overall had 8 wins and 14 losses.

The team of the week was the 11Cs who have kept their perfect season alive with an unorthodox 2-0 win demonstrating their unique skill set and determination to win.

In Week 1 of this term, Luke Ames, a student in Year 11 who many of you will know, spoke in his first Senior A debate (an extraordinary feat on its own) in front of 200 Churchie boys, Luke stood up not nervous, but proud. Luke answered the call he was given, and he faced his challenge.

I used to think school was a series of boring days that you had to get through until the weekend. But it was an old Kearney boy named Sean McInerny who made it clear that school was not only my profession, but a challenge and a test. Naturally, I answered with What are you talking about? He said Noah, in rugby when you face an opposition stronger, bigger and faster you don’t walk off, you rise to the challenge. Your assignment is the same. Your teacher is challenging you. They are asking you what have you got? They want you to enter the arena and fight to beat it. 

Life at Terrace is a series of challenges. Each student is challenged to perform in exams and assignments. Each student is challenged in Sporting and Cultural pursuits. Each student is challenged to be a person of compassion. Parents are challenged to spend long days at cricket, wake up early for rowing and support students in the millions of ways they do.

This year, many people will challenge us, and we will be called to answer that challenge. Be the One is about stepping up. When you are challenged to complete 2000 words by next week, rise to it. When you are challenged to listen to others and be considerate of others, rise to it. When you are challenged to face people larger, bigger and faster than you, rise to it. When you are challenged to memorise a piece of music, rise to it. And when you are challenged and called to come out on any Saturday to encourage your friends, you could Snapchat people at home, play games or you could answer the call and rise to it. 

Luke could have taken the easy option in Week 1. But Luke was The One at that moment. Luke conquered his challenge. The Terrace Family is amazing in its ability to support those going through challenges of all kinds. Good luck with all the challenges this year. Be the one to rise to them. Be the One.

Belonging… the week that was

Last week, I felt and saw what it is to be part of this amazing community we call the Terrace Family. All week I had been chasing my tail agonising over the details of last Saturday’s Terrace Rowing Regatta and Welcome Function at Gambaro’s that night. It was no small feat to pull off a day like Saturday out in the middle of nowhere. For those who have yet to experience GPS Rowing, it is held on a dam halfway between Boonah and Beaudesert, an hour away from Tennyson. There is a generator and a handful of toilets and that is it, everything else has to be brought in, each and every week. 

In true Terrace style we put on a spread to rival Michelin star restaurants. I had a list to fill of jobs that needed to be done on the prior Sunday, it was half empty. The word went out that we needed everyone’s help.  It was another all in event. I did promise there was a job for everyone and by the end of Tuesday the list was overflowing. Everyone giving their time and effort not just once, but in some cases all day long. At the end of the day everyone was exhausted but went home happy with the knowledge of a job well done. 

Just to make sure we really knew we were alive, last Saturday night approximately 250 Terrace mothers celebrated a new year. We gathered at Gambaro's at 6pm (I did have time to go home and wash the mud from my feet and legs and put on a dress) to celebrate friendships old and new. I challenged each and every woman in the room to speak to at least two new people that night and by all accounts that was blown out of the water. 

It was an uncomplicated night with a little 80s music playing in the background (sorry ladies, that was my doing) while people mingled and shared some of themselves with those around them. As I stood at the door greeting everyone, I had a bird’s eye view of the stairs and I could tell the seasoned mothers laughing and joking as they arrived and also the first time nervous mothers who were not quite sure they wanted to be there. I joked about being welcomed to 250 of your closest family and friends but I meant every word I said. 

During your time at Terrace you will laugh with, confer with, lean on, party with and cry with at least some of these women. Knowing you can turn to other mothers (who probably have the same concerns or emotions as you do) and be respected for your opinions is a gift that keeps on giving. 

In closing, I would like to acknowledge my tribe who came around me (this is where I get goose bumps all over) and supported me in what was a crazy week and to those who went the extra mile. I say 'thank you', it didn’t go unnoticed. I love this community of ours, there is nowhere else like it.

TLG Welcome Mass - Parents and Sons

Next Tuesday 3 March, we would love to see you at our annual Welcome Mass. Mass starts in the Chapel of the Holy Family at 7.30am with coffee and delicious breakfast style items served afterwards in the Founders' Room. We welcome anyone, including your sons, who would like to attend from our community. Mass will be finished by approximately 8.15am. 

We are very lucky to have the College Choir led by Mrs Bernadette Debattista with Mr Brad Esbenson accompanying on his trumpet.  This is a lovely spiritual way to connect with other families and staff at Terrace.  I do encourage you to attend if you can.

Years 5 – 9 Mothers' High Tea

Planning is well underway for the Years 5-9 Mothers’ High Tea event to be held on 27 April at the Victoria Park Golf Club. Tickets are $55 each, which include a complimentary glass of bubbles on arrival and your chance to win the wonderful main lucky door prize or one of the lucky draw prizes for each of the five year levels coming on the day. More details on the prizes will be coming over the following weeks, with invitations being emailed before the end of term. For those who would like to linger longer, we have been able to secure the beer garden at the venue afterwards.

Terrace Cookbook special

For those parents new to the school, you may not be aware that Terrace has a great practical cookbook. This is a book every Terrace gentleman should not leave home without. The recipes are gathered from present and past mothers and include a huge array of family favourites. It has become a staple in many of our homes, not just for the practical aspects to what is offered inside, but also because it is truly a beautiful book. We currently have a special running on the cookbooks to mark the commencement of the year. Cookbooks are $25 each, with a current bundle offer of $30 for a cookbook and a Terrace Red and Black tea towel. Terrace to the Fore - celebrating 145 years

This year will mark our College’s 145-year Anniversary and, in celebration, the TLG will  hold an Anniversary Ball on 6 June 2020 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday 12 March 2020. For families new to Terrace, this event is held every five years and is always a night to remember.  This year’s Ball will focus on the Terrace Family and our College’s long history of sending Terrace Gentlemen into the world to make their mark. The TLG are currently seeking one or two people to help with the pre-planning of the ball, in particular a graphic designer willing to offer 8-10 hours of time. Volunteers will also be sought to assist on the night.  Look out for the Volunteer Sign Up forms, which will be issued in April/May.  If you are interested in helping coordinate this fantastic event, please email Anna Wright (amwright1@optusnet.com.au) or Libby Baynton (libby@orbitcapital.com.au). There are still spaces throughout the electronic Parent Directory on the Parent Lounge.  I am sending out another reminder to parents to sign on. Please log onto the Parent Lounge, update your details and share if you are happy for others in your various year levels to contact you if the need arises (e.g. accidental bag swap, lifts to training, invitations etc). This is also crucial for our year level coordinators.
