Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

As we approach the middle of Term 4, the delayed Ekka holiday this Friday will provide the Terrace Family with an opportunity to regroup and re-evaluate progress. The Year 12 students are already in exam mode, and the remaining students will commence their exams on 18 November. To put this in more concrete terms, exams for students in Years 5 to 11 will commence in just 14 school days. A continued focus on classwork, assignments, and study is critical.

It should be noted that not only is there much happening in the coming weeks on the academic front, but there are also several other significant College events to look forward to:

• TLG AGM
• ‘GT on the Green’ – Annual Long Lunch
• Sport and cultural pre-season training

Last week the College Foundation conducted its annual Giving Day – ‘One Day for Terrace’. In an extraordinary show of generosity and support, $426 029 was raised. This amount will provide sufficient funds to educate a young man at Terrace for as long as Terrace exists, or put alternatively, provide funds to educate 25 Edmund Rice Bursary students in 2022. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all who so generously supported this special campaign. I also want to acknowledge and thank the Development Office staff and the many parents, College staff and Old Boys who assisted on the phones during the 24 hours of the campaign. Thank you, everyone.

In last week’s edition of the Terrace News, I provided details about the College’s current Ministerial Infrastructure Designation application. Key to the College’s capital development in the coming decade is the provision of upgraded and modern facilities. The development of a new Year 9 centre at 184 St Paul’s Terrace will convert the existing Waterford building into a Cultural Centre and provide quality facilities for our expanding Music program. As was evidenced at the Celebration of Excellence last week, we have some outstanding talent among our students, and upgraded music facilities at the College will further benefit the entire student body. Despite some misleading communication from members of the public, any future capital development at Terrace are very much focused on an improvement agenda, as opposed to an expansion agenda. I believe this is a very important distinction to make.

Finally, this week, I invite members of the Terrace Family to our All Souls’ Day Mass on Tuesday 2 November, commencing at 7.45am.

Goodbye all

Last week, we farewelled the Seniors of 2021 before they commenced their external exams. A ritual in Term 4 is that the College Captains write a farewell speech to the College and present it at the final College assemblies. Last week, we heard from College Vice Captain Benjamin Chatwood. Listening to him was a timely reminder that every student who dons the red and black tie is unique, and every person brings their unique gifts.

Here is a snippet of his speech. Enjoy.

I remember a few years ago, a previous College Captain said in his final speech that he loved Terrace, and at the time I thought that was the cringiest thing ever. How could you love somewhere that gives you maths exams or detentions or homework? But standing in the same spot that he was years later, I understand what he meant. It's not the bricks and mortar that he loved and it's not even the uniform or the school colours, but it’s the experiences Terrace has given all of us and the mates we have made along the way. And for that same reason, I too can say, I love Terrace.

When I first got the job of Vice Captain I was filled with the normal range of emotions of happiness and excitement for the year ahead. However, the first thought I had was what sort of leader would I be? There’s always the sporty captain or the smart captain or the war cry captain, so I looked at my favourite captains across the years and wondered what sort of skipper they were. Maybe I could try to be like Joe Dwyer or Angus White or Dan Migotto (previous College Captains), yet I knew I couldn’t because at the end of the day I’m not them. I’m me. So, I set out this year not trying to be the best captain at war cries or the smartest captain or the most athletic captain or even the best captain, but rather the best version of me. And that’s when I realised that the best captains are the ones who were themselves and who were unique. I don’t think there are many other schools where you can play Firsts Volleyball while doing Debating and Future Problem Solving and that being seen as not only normal, but celebrated. And I think that’s one of the things I love about this school so much, you can be the best you there can be, so please do not waste that chance.

So, to the younger lads - if there’s anything I’ve told you this year, this is the most important – give everything a go, and don’t worry about what others think of you for signing up for something because most likely it won’t be a negative reception.

To the teachers and staff, thank you for putting up with us for the past eight years by teaching us, coaching us, setting up things for us and being good examples of what good human beings are, we couldn’t have gotten through this journey without you.

To the Seniors of 2021, thank you, it's been fun. Thank you for letting me grow up alongside you guys while we pull our shenanigans. I wouldn’t want to do it with any other group of lads. This year we really did Answer the Call. Thank you.

Commemorative Mass – 7.45am Tuesday 2 November - Chapel of The Holy Family. All welcome!

The concept of a herd mentality is a naturally occurring phenomenon in society. The feeling of the need to conform to societal trends can be compelling. This is highly visible in schools as the developing adolescent brain is very susceptible to these influences. We can all relate to various crazes at school (yo-yos, music, marbles, fashion, etc.), which can create a sense of connectedness to others. I believe that it is critically important that, as a College community, we have an acute awareness of the dark side of herd mentality. The boys have heard the term mob mentality used at various assemblies to describe our concerns about adopting undesirable behaviours that potentially occur as the tendency to diffuse individual responsibility for one’s actions happens when large groups gather. The sense of self-awareness often diminishes as they start to mimic what others are doing. We are all familiar with someone who in a one-on-one interaction is enjoyable, but when you engage with them in a group setting, they change significantly.

We will continue to challenge these behaviours at the College. I ask you to start a conversation with your son about his understanding of a mob mentality and where he sees this occurring at Terrace. Please engage with him - what he might do to avoid getting caught up in a situation where he decides to conform to the mob rather than having the self-awareness to maintain individual responsibility for his actions, be it at lunchtimes, in the classroom, online, at training, or on the weekends.

The end of this week signals the halfway point of Term 4 for most of the College. During the various year level assemblies this term, I have used one of Doc Rivers' (NBA Coach) team goals which promoted the need to 'finish the race'. This goal refers to the concept of committing to the task at hand, be it the training drill or the game that they are currently participating in. Our student body needs to have the same thinking for their school year. There is no guarantee that every moment will be easy and enjoyable. Still, our young men must maintain their enthusiasm and motivation and finish Term 4 on a high. Our job as teachers and parents is to support them as they do so.

At Week 4 of an eight-week term, reality starts to kick in. Assignments are due, and exams are on the horizon (three weeks away). The workload has been steadily increasing, and the need to revise is now a reality. Some advice for students:

• Those students who are organised and have planned their studies will now start to reap the reward of their earlier work – keep going, be persistent and stick to your plan.
• To those who have not planned or who have not started their revision – don’t panic! There is still time if you get to it now. The worst thing you can do is ignore your study and hope it will go away. Plan the rest of the term, start your revision with some extra work after homework is done, get help from a mate, tutor, teacher, parents/caregivers. There are lots of people here to help you, just ask.
• Attend staff tutoring sessions. These sessions are offered by our generous teaching staff. They are a great way to get assistance with that problem-solving question you can’t answer or that concept you don’t understand. Tutoring times can be found on the College App.
• Year 11 students can access Study Hall every morning and afternoon in 422.
• Be an active learner. Seek out assistance for the problems, questions, or concepts that you don’t understand.

Exam calendars will be available next week. This is an important document that shapes each student’s planning for the later part of the term. In Formation classes, students will spend some time incorporating this information into their study plans.

Our Senior cohort has commenced their external exam block. While the exams have been challenging, the initial feedback is that they are confident and have prepared well and know the College supports them. My thanks to all students who wished them well in the exam tunnel on Monday morning. Thanks also to the TLG for providing a wonderful lunch to keep the students going over the day.

Congratulations to Ben Zhang (Year 9) on his invitation to attend the 2021 Australian Mathematics Olympiad Committee (AMOC) School of Excellence. The principle purpose of the School of Excellence is to develop mathematical problem-solving skills and help identify the students who may become members of the Australian team for next year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). We wish Ben all the best.

It may be hard to believe, but we have just passed the halfway mark of Term 4. With this marker, we hope that our students are fully immersed in good study habits so that they can see the year through on a positive note. As we work toward the end of Term 4, I ask for your assistance encouraging your son to finish their Waterford journey well. Understandably this time of the year can bring many distractions, and the boys are looking forward to the end of the school year. Some boys are losing focus, and I chose to share some timely reminders of our expectations at our Waterford Assembly today.

Last weekend, I joined a group of Year 10 volunteers at All Hallows’ for our second Head to Heart Camp for 2021. Our boys did an excellent job of providing a weekend respite for some young children that are not so fortunate. Their time, leadership and companionship for these children was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Ms Gibson and Mr Thompson for their time supervising this camp.

Another popular event at Waterford was the recommencement of the Kolega Café. Mr Shori’s Pastoral Care group and our Student Representatives helped fundraise for this great cause by selling iced coffees and egg and bacon sandwiches to the cohort. You are more than welcome to stop by and join us for a bite to eat at our next Kolega Café.

Another wonderful group of students has been generous with their time joining St Mary’s of the Cross primary school for their Homework Club after school on Tuesdays. This will continue for the next two weeks.

I am proud of how many boys in this cohort have embraced the service opportunities outside the classroom, and I look forward to our final few weeks of the Waterford journey.

Scams Awareness Week is coming up and we are urging all in our Terrace community to be aware and to stay safe online.

In 2020, Australians lost over $850 million to scams and made 444 164 scam reports in total to Scamwatch, ReportCyber, other government agencies, banks and payment platforms.

The theme for Scams Awareness week this year is “Let’s talk scams” and the ACCC and partner organisations are encouraging everyone to talk to their family and friends about scams, and get smarter with your data. For more information, go to https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/

Debating

Debating has once again been very strong at Terrace this year, finishing second in both the GPS and Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competitions. While we report Senior A premiership success, our depth of talent goes much further. With lockdowns and changes, the Senior competition wrapped up last night with two of our teams competing for the shields. We are very proud to announce our 9.3 team were announced winners of the Year 9 State Final! Our 10.1 team were placed second out of the 99 other Year 10 teams. After Senior A placed second last month in the state finals, last night’s achievements place Terrace second in the aggregate competition.

Congratulations to all our debaters, coaches and the broader Terrace Debating family. It is the strength and support in our program that allows our debaters to reach these heights.

Music

Our Music program has continued to grow from strength to strength under the leadership of Director Mr Derek Rose. We congratulate the Red Thunder Drumline who competed in the Australian Drumline Eisteddfod and were awarded first place in the test piece, second place in the own choice, best Tenor section, runner up to the National Grand Champion and Year 12 student Alex Smith was awarded the Australian Tenor Drum Champion for his solo.

The 1st Percussion Ensemble also competed at a national level entering the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod, and we are awaiting results. In addition to the above, eight students within our program have received their AMEB Grade 8; two Certificate of Performances; Sebastian Wright achieved fourth place in the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod Drum Kit A Grade solo, and Liam Tse also placed third in the two mallet marimba B Grade, first in the four mallet marimba C Grade, first in the concert snare B Grade, second in the timpani C Grade and a bronze in the Drum Kit A Grade.

Last night the Terrace Jazz Combo performed for the Barrett House/Strong Women Talking Dinner held in Duhig Place. It was an enjoyable evening, and we highly commend the Jazz Combo on a fine performance - a true example of how boys rise to the occasion to be exemplary ambassadors of the College.

Congratulations to Year 9 student Caden Rieger for his outstanding sporting achievements. Caden was selected in the Queensland State Volleyball team and went to the Nationals in March. Caden was also selected to play in the Queensland State Hockey team.

TLG AGM

Monday 8 November, the TLG AGM takes place. This year, our Vice Presidents of Hospitality, Treasurer and Secretary will be retiring after two years of dedicated service. If you would like to consider taking on an official committee role or know someone who would be perfect, please email the TLG@terrace.qld.edu.au. All retiring committee members will mentor the new office bearers through their first year.

Two people usually share this role. The VP (Hospitality) is the first port of call for all events requiring the traditional TLG hospitality. Duties include:

Next Step is a statewide post-school destination survey of all students who complete Year 12 in Queensland. Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year's students will be invited to complete the Next Step survey in March 2022
