Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

It is hard to believe, but the end of Term 1 is upon us and we prepare for the Easter break.  My thanks to the staff, students and parents for all that you have done to ensure Term 1 has been successful.  I particularly congratulate those young men who began their journey at Terrace this year.  I am sure that it has been a busy and full term; however, I compliment you on how positively you have conducted yourselves and grown to be Terrace Gentlemen.

Last Saturday, the final rounds of Cricket and Volleyball took place.  This completed a very busy and successful term of GPS sport.  I thank all coordinators and coaches across the various activities.  Thank you to the many parents and Support Group members who gave their time so generously.  

Congratulations to the many young men who participated in the various activities across the term.  Well done on how you represented Terrace and on how you performed.  Overall, the results were very good.  Terrace was placed third in GPS Debating, fourth in Rowing (1st VIII), fourth at Swimming, third at Cricket (1st XI) and second in Volleyball (1st VI).  Well done.

Easter is a significant time in the Church’s calendar as we celebrate the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.  Over the Easter period we are reminded of the importance of our Faith and that the Resurrection is central to our Catholic tradition. As a College Community, we will finish the Term with a simple but important Easter Liturgy.

During the Easter break there are a number of tours, training camps and clinics occurring in preparation for the upcoming seasons.  I thank those who have organised or are participating in these activities and wish all involved the very best.

I have no doubt that everyone is looking forward to the Easter break.  I hope the holiday period provides all members of the Terrace Family an opportunity to reflect, recharge and spend time with friends and family.  I wish you a happy and safe Easter and look forward to reconnecting in Term 2. A reminder that due to the Commonwealth Games, school will commence on Tuesday 17 April.

Best wishes to Mr Jamie Burgess who has been seconded to Hemmant Flexi School, a fellow EREA school for the remainder of this year on contract. We look forward to welcoming Mr Cameron McConnell, an experienced EREA teacher who will lead Mr Burgess’s classes for the remainder of the year.

Thank you to Mr Terry Cullen who has so ably acted as Property Manager while Mr Glenn Brown has been on leave. Mr Brown returns during the holiday break.  Unfortunately, he was in Cape Town watching the cricket when things went a little awry!

Congratulations to Mr Anthony Hayward and his wife Tamara on the safe arrival of their baby boy. A reminder that Mr Hayward will be on leave until Week 2 of Term 2. Thank you to Mr Andrew Stormonth who will act as Dean of Windsor House for this time. A reminder that Mrs Susie Cooper will lead Mr Hayward’s classes for this time.

Best wishes to Mr Clinton Mills of the Waterford staff who is getting married over the Easter break.

Welcome back to Mr Danny Bliss from our IT Team from his leave. Mr Liam Stevens will continue his contract as we continue the recruiting process after the departure of Mrs Jo Pacheco.

Best wishes to Mr Peter Whitehouse who commences his long service leave for the first four weeks of Term 2. We look forward to welcoming Mr Tony Nicita who will lead Mr Whitehouse’s classes during this time.

As the term finishes, my hope is that every student can finish feeling proud of his achievements, whatever they may be. Many boys have made a consistent effort across the term to balance their many and varied co-curricular commitments with their school work. I am continually impressed with not only the ability to balance all the commitments, but also the positive way our boys accomplish so much. 

At a graduation ceremony for post doctorate students at the prestigious university of MIT, the vice chancellor addressed the graduates stating - “I know only two things about you - one is that you have worked very hard to be here today and two - that you have faced many times when you have felt challenged and beaten but you have overcome the adversity and shown great resilience”. I am sure that many of our boys would similarly find this a statement familiar to themselves.

Reports will be available electronically next Tuesday via Parent Lounge. As we continue to emphasise to our boys, as teachers, our hopes and aims are that every boy can state at the end of term that his outcomes are the best that he could produce irrespective of the actual result.

Also, being sent electronically next Tuesday is a reflection sheet that I would encourage parents to explore with their sons. This reflections sheet will also be available via the College App.  This exercise is designed to encourage boys to analyse their strategies from Term 1 with the view to enhance or improve their outcomes from Term 2. Hopefully this is a very productive and valuable family activity.

This week our Year 12 students completed workshops in preparation for QCS.  Our boys are to be commended not only on their engagement across these two days after a busy term and exam block, but also for the practice paper results from earlier in the term. Our Senior students have started well in their preparation for this external testing.

Our Years 7 and 9 students also had workshops around numeracy and literacy skill building. These workshops provided boys with the familiarity and conditions around the external NAPLAN testing. Again, my congratulations on the engagement from our boys across these sessions, especially after a busy term.

I wish all families a restful break and hope that it gives a change in the daily routine of school commitments.

Exams have been completed in the past few days and a number of other important activities have been a focal point for the final two days of school.  From an academic perspective, the completion of exams has allowed Year 12 students to spend two days completing QCS preparation, while Year 10 students have undertaken external aptitude testing.  The data from this testing allows us to monitor the academic progress of the boys in comparison to their natural ability.  Often, if a young man’s achievement is below what we believe he is capable of, it is an indicator of a pastoral need that we can assist with.  There is a strong connection between academic and pastoral progress and we should never view them as being independent of each other.

Students from Years 7 to 10 have also taken part in various presentations over the final days of term; these are part of our formation program and are key contributors to the Terrace Gentlemen we aim to develop.  Students from Years 9 and 10 attended a presentation from an organisation known as ‘batyr’.  Their focus is preventative education around the topic of youth mental health.  They presented the statistic that, in an average group of 30 adolescents, seven will experience significant mental health issues, but only two of them will actually reach out for help.  The boys heard real-life stories of presenters who have faced significant challenges in their lives.  Most importantly, they heard of the need to speak out and find help for themselves or someone else if they see warning signs.

Students from Years 8 and 9 heard Cam Adair from ‘Gamequitters’ speak about his experience as a recovered gaming addict.  His impact comes from being able to speak the language of gaming in a manner that students understand.  He does not completely oppose gaming, but gives advice about how to manage the incredible temptation that comes from games and to live a well-rounded life.  On Wednesday evening Cam addressed a large audience to share some thoughts and wisdom about gaming with parents of adolescent boys.  We were pleased to welcome a large number of parents from Brisbane Grammar School, who share a similar interest in what is a highly relevant topic.

Year 10 students also spent some time in activities and presentations from a company known as yLead, whose messages revolve around leadership and respectful relationships.  Finally, students from Year 7 attended a ‘Peer Power’ session titled ‘Leading a Legacy’.  Topics included the leadership potential of every individual and the need to embrace and welcome diversity.  In a few days, our formation program covered a wide range of topics that we view as being of great importance.  Parents often talk about their desire for their sons to become well-rounded young men and we feel that sessions such as those outlined above all add to their growth and maturity.  

I am sure all of our community are looking forward to a nice break over Easter.  I wish all of our families an enjoyable, happy and Holy Easter season.  I look forward to continuing our journey in Term 2.

Embraced, then betrayed

Our Catholic faith is embedded in infinite wisdom. It doesn’t get much better than the wisdom wrapped up in the story and message of Holy Week. The concept of being joyously embraced by others, only to be then betrayed by that same community, to then also be denied and banished, is as confronting today and it was confronting for Jesus millennia ago. 

How have you been confronted by betrayal, denial and banishment in your life? 

Articulating the story, meaning and theology of Holy Week and Easter to young people is challenging. Our Holy Thursday liturgy provided our Terrace Family with this opportunity by centering on the concept of betrayal, denial and the stifling of life:

We betray others when we refuse to listen. 
We deny others when we silence their voice. 
We stifle life when we turn our backs on supporting others.

Fortunately, the wisdom of the Easter story gives us hope and new life. Be it as offender or as sufferer of betrayal or denial, through the moment of Easter Sunday, Jesus rises within us, within our relationships and within our actions to make a difference for peace, compassion and justice for others.

Oscar Romero (Archbishop of San Salvador) committed his life to enacting the call of Easter. He fought tirelessly in his work as a human rights advocate and ally of social justice, particularly for the people of his nation, El Salvador.  His final words while presiding over his final mass form a fitting message for us to reflect upon on this Holy Thursday, as we prepare for the joy of Easter.

Whoever offers their life out of love for Christ, and in service to others, will live like the seed that dies…..May this immolated body and this blood sacrificed for all nourish us so that we may offer our body and blood as Christ did, and thus bring justice and peace to our people. Let us join together, then, in the faith and hope of this intimate moment of prayer…

The Good News of Terrace

Our final week of Term 1 is upon us and there has been plenty packed into Terrace’s busy life. We are in the traditional Passion Week leading up to Easter and the journey of Lent draws to a close.  Lent is a time for reflection and with our term results being sent during the holidays, it is important that we also reflect on how we have started our year and to build on our efforts from Term 1. 

For our Years 5 and 6 students the Lenten journey culminates with our annual Lenten Walk around Victoria Park and then onto our Lenten Fair. Our Lenten Fair has been a regular event and the student response to the school Lenten Appeal has always been impressive. Years 5 and 6 have raised funds to support teachers in Timor-Leste mission schools to be paid for the work they do.

After exams have been completed this week, Years 5, 7 and 9 students have taken part in NAPLAN preparation. The gradual planning and preparation time is very valuable so that when NAPLAN comes in May, the students will be ready and familiar with what is involved. 

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students have been to Camp Maroon to experience the Terrace Outdoor Education Centre for the first time. Camp Maroon is an outpost but an integral part of Terrace life. Our Year 5 students were very excited as they faced new challenges. However, it was very rewarding with activities from canoeing and camping out, to rock climbing, and who could forget the experience of seeing rushing waterfalls and creeks. 

A very Happy Easter to all families. Wishing you a safe holiday period with your family and hopefully students will return re-energised for Term 2.

Congratulations to Brisbane Grammar School who are the overall GPS Debating Champions for 2018.  Terrace men tied for third.

QDU Debating

We are half way through round two and results so far this season have been mixed.  Congratulations to our unbeaten teams.  Please note – due to ANZAC Day, the Round 2 debates for Senior A and Year 8 will be on Thursday night as per the College calendar.

We Will Rock You

Senior Musical We Will Rock You Holiday rehearsals have been posted for the cast, crew and orchestra.  Students and parents - please ensure you check that you are using the most up to date schedule.  If there are any students who are not able to attend holiday rehearsal, please email as soon as possible to advise your absent days. Our costumes are certainly putting the “Rock” into this musical!  If anyone in our College community has the following items that we can use, we would be very grateful if you would drop them at the Cultural office: 

• Aqua, light blue or any surgical scrubs  x 2 sets 
• Stethoscopes x 2
• Men's leather look jackets - all styles
• Denim jackets and denim vests
• Men's business suits - 2-piece jacket and trousers

Our 2016 Senior musical, Pippin, sold almost 90% of tickets on the first day!  This was a massive achievement and we are hoping to better it for We Will Rock You. This year, our musical will be held at the Garden’s Point Theatre from 16-19 May.  Tickets will go on sale at 2pm on Thursday 26 April.  Further ticketing information will be provided in the next issue of the Terrace News.

Terrace Performing Arts (TPA) Fundraising 

The 2018/2019 Entertainment Book is a yearly fundraiser by the TPA.  Fundraising goes towards supporting Terrace students and their families.   To purchase and for further information, please click on the following link:  https://www.entertainmentbook.... .  Your friends and families may also use this link should they wish to purchase the Entertainment Book. Years 5, 6 and 10 students brought a book home yesterday. If you do not wish to purchase, you are under no obligation.  Simply return the book, unopened, with your son.  Years 5 and 6 – please return to the Cultural office.  Year 10 – please return to reception at Waterford Place. We appreciate that all families may not wish to purchase the Entertainment Book.  Thank you for your support. 

Theatresports 

We welcome Ms Emma Hatchett as the 2018 Terrace Theatresports Coordinator.  An email was sent by Ms Hatchett to all students who have been registered to participate in Terrace Theatresports. Training will start in Week 1 of Term 2.  The training schedule has also been posted to the App.

Chess 

The Terrace Chess Club continues to grow.  The success of our Club is dependent on each member.  Please check the App for training times for Club and GPS students.

Holiday Rehearsals 

Please note the change in rehearsals for the ANZAC and Pep Band.  Parents must go to Parent Lounge and click ‘Accept’ for their son’s events.  All event memos for Music are posted on the App.

Guest Speaker 

We have invited Mr Justin Nickerson to speak with our Senior students on Tuesday 24 April.  Justin is a leading motivational speaker as well as being formally recognised as the leading auctioneer across Australasia.  He is the only Australian to win the Australasian Auctioneer of the Year twice in the history of the award.  We would expect ALL Senior debating students along with all Years 10 and 11 debaters to attend.  Public Speaking, Toastmasters and Theatresports students would also benefit. Music students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will also be invited to participate.  An email will be sent to specific students with information regarding this event.

Part of the success of our Cultural activities can be traced to our Support Groups.  If you would like to be involved, meetings are outlined in the College calendar and on the App.  Our support group meetings start promptly at 5.30pm.

Over the holidays, we have a couple of workshops for the ANZAC band and Red Peppers Pep band being held at Tennyson. These workshops will be focusing on performance techniques for tightening up our marching and outdoor performances. Please ensure you have responded to these tour notifications and that you have let Ensemble Directors know if your son is unable to attend.

Please note an addition to the calendar below. The Terrace Jazz Combo will be performing at the Football Launch on Saturday 21 April 3.30-8.30pm at Tennyson. I ask all members to please respond promptly to the memo.

For those students who perform with our beginner and intermediate level ensembles, it is a requirement that they wear grey trousers for performances. This provides a more formal and unified look as opposed to a mix of trousers and shorts. The first big concert event for these groups will be the Winter Concert in Term 2. Trousers are available from the Uniform Shop in sizes from 8 to 18. Students who perform only as part of the Years 5 and 6 Band and Strings classes do not need to purchase trousers.

Please check the Terrace App and Parent Lounge regularly as this is where information regarding various events (see the list below) will now be published. As events are approved and posted to the Parent Lounge, you will be sent an email advising the name of the event, including the Event Memo, to check and you will be required to give a response regarding attendance. Event Memos will also be available through the Terrace App in Culture>Music.

Saturday was the final round of fixtures for the Cricket and Volleyball seasons and the boys in the Red and Black had a great weekend of results against their opponents from up on the range at Toowoomba Grammar.

Strong performances across all year levels and divisions were demonstrated, and Terrace walked away winning both programs as well as taking out the 1st XI Cricket and 1st VI Volleyball games.

In Cricket it certainly went down to the last ball with young Max Law hitting a single on the final delivery to secure a strong bonus point victory for the Terrace 1st XI. 

In Volleyball the boys had a strong three set victory – a clean sweep of their opponents in the Campbell Centre.

For both these flagship teams it was a podium finish for the year with the Cricket 1st XI recording third place overall and the Volleyball 1st VI recording second place on the premiership ladder.

Well done to both sets of boys for their commitment and performances over the entire season. 

This Thursday is the first of the Cross Country meets to be held this season - good luck to the boys who have signed on for this program and for this meet. Thank you to the parents who have been supplying breakfasts for the boys after training sessions – the variety and availability of the breakfasts is a great initiative and appreciated by the boys. Cross Country Camp will be held over the break from 11-13 April.  If you have not yet registered your interest for the camp you will need to do so ASAP. Details are available on the College App >Sport>Cross Country. 

Good luck to the 38 young men who will head off to England this Thursday for a Football Tour – comprising a First Squad and a developmental squad. The boys will play a number of games against regional selection teams as well as attend two English Premier League fixtures. It promises to be a great tour.

Sign On 

We have had parents asking why they are not receiving emails for respective sport programs moving into Term 2. On almost every occasion it is because the boys have not been signed on and so are not registered for that activity. If you wish to be kept informed then boys need to be signed on for the following activities through the Parent Lounge: 

• Tennis - Whole of program
• Football - Whole of program
• Cross Country - Whole of program
• Gymnastics - Whole of program
• Rugby - “A and B” program 
• Basketball - “A” program

Please note that the sign on for all activities is a term-by-term structure and does not automatically transfer over – you must sign on for that activity each term.

TLG Meeting Monday 26 March

On Monday, 26 March, we had the end of term TLG Breakfast Meeting. Thank you to Dr Carroll, Mrs Lea Walker-Franks (Director of Development) and Mrs Annie Forster (Cricket Support Group) for coming along as our special guest speakers. 

One of the main topics covered was the possibility of a large-scale event to be held in 2019. This is in response to the significantly reduced Government funding that will be occurring progressively over the next few years. A significant implication of the reduced funding is that co-curricular activities will be relying very heavily on fundraising in the years ahead. Accordingly, the College is seeking ways to boost fundraising opportunities and sees successes of events like the Gala Ball to be something we may need to undertake more frequently.  What form the proposed large-scale event will take has not yet been finalised, but there are a few ideas being put on the table, including a long lunch at Tennyson. 

Since this is an event that will benefit all Support Groups, it will require a broad cooperative approach from planning, to sourcing prizes and so on. The TLG, at this point in time, will be putting together a committee to assist and we will be seeking people outside our usual band of helpers who are active within their respective Support Groups and who are willing and able to contribute. As always, all help is greatly appreciated.

Minutes from the meeting will be circulated shortly to the people on our email data base. The minutes are a great resource if you are wanting to keep abreast of TLG activities but can’t make it to our meetings. 

Years 5 – 9 Mothers' High Tea

We have sold just short of 300 tickets to our Years 5-9 Mothers' High Tea. Places are still available, so please be sure to book soon if you intend on coming along and haven’t bought your ticket yet. Tickets are $55 each (plus a $2.30 booking fee) and can be bought through College Events page or via this link. Included in the price of your ticket are bubbles on arrival compliments of our hosts, Victoria Park, a traditional High Tea plus free entry into the pool of wonderful prizes. Victoria Park is also offering a cash bar with terrific prices on favourite beverages during the event and for those wishing to remain a while longer to enjoy a little more time together.
