Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is upon us.  Much has happened since Day One on 22 January. Our year has been a full one; with many highlights, some sadness and much to celebrate.  I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Terrace Family for your valuable and important contributions to Terrace throughout 2018.

Last Saturday, the Terrace Family was in ‘full swing’.  The Conor Tweedy Long Lunch was a wonderful display of the Terrace Family (and beyond), coming together in support of Conor.  My thanks to the many people who contributed to making the day so successful.  In particular, I thank the Organising Committee for their exceptional work in coordinating the event.  On behalf of all within the Terrace Family, thank you and well done.

The staff will be at school next week finalising their marking and reporting for Semester 2.  The reports will again be distributed electronically and will be accessible from Parent Lounge from Monday 10 December.

As we journey towards the end of the 2018 school year, I wish to say thank you and farewell to those families and staff who are leaving Terrace.  To Mrs Julie Quinn, Mrs Judy Ariotti, Mr Paul Ianniello, Mrs Bronwyn Platz, Mr Andrew Ebrington, Mrs Nicole Kirsch, Mrs Susie Cooper, Mr Gary Stickley and Mr Cam McConnell, I say thank you for all that you have done for the Terrace Family over many years.  I also ask the Terrace Family to keep in their thoughts and prayers, Mr Mark Shori, a teacher at Waterford, who remains very ill in hospital.  We pray for Mark and his family.

Finally, as the Christmas period rapidly approaches and we, as a Catholic community celebrate the birth of Jesus, I wish all members of the Terrace Family a happy, safe and holy Christmas and look forward to reconnecting in 2019.

Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

College Dean | Mr Chris Ryan

Christmas Blessings

I wish the Terrace Family the Blessings of the Christ Child in the coming weeks as we await the arrival and birth of His joy and hope in our hearts. I pray that this Christmas is a special time for each of you as individuals and as family and that we return to the Terrace Family in 2019 with a renewed peace and energy for the building up of God’s dream here within our community. I extend my personal thanks to all who have supported me this year within the Terrace Family and personal well wishes to all for a wonderful Christmas season and time with family and friends.

Staff News

We wish Mr Ken Hainstock well for his long service leave for Term 1 2019, and look forward to welcoming Mr Padraic Gannon back to the College to cover for Mr Hainstock.

Mrs Bronwyn Platz, who teaches in our Exceptional Learners Faculty, has resigned from the College for 2019. Mrs Platz and her husband Brad are moving to Tasmania and we wish them well for this new adventure. The College is presently recruiting for this role along with the previously advertised positions of Careers Counsellor and Health and Physical Education teacher.

We wish Mr Deen Mewburn, one of our Year 6 teaching staff the very best as he and his family prepare for the arrival of a new baby in the coming days. We hope this new baby, one of several born within the Terrace staff community in 2018, arrives safely and healthily.

After the students have finished, the staff also have the opportunity for farewell rituals and there is a strong tradition of doing this very well within our staff. As noted in recent months, next week we farewell and wish every success and continued health and happiness to Mrs Judy Ariotti, Mrs Julie Quinn, Mr Paul Ianniello, Mrs Bronwyn Platz, Mr Andrew Ebrington, Mrs Nicole Kirsch, Mrs Susie Cooper, Mr Gary Stickley and Mr Cam McConnell. In the new year, we look forward to welcoming, Mrs Therese McGregor, Mr Gavin Clements, Mr Patrick Barker, Mr Sonny Ali, Mrs Rachel Walsh, Mrs Belinda Brown and Mr Innes Harriman and three new appointees that we have yet to finalise. We look forward to a positive 2019 and thank the Terrace Family for their partnership and support of our staff throughout this year.

Dean of Studies | Mrs Julie Quinn

Well done on the efforts of so many boys this week.

As we often discuss, it has been most inspiring to witness so many boys who ensured that they worked hard until the final exam. Like preparing for any event, it is always important that efforts in the final days do not wain.

There is no greater feeling or reward than finishing the year and leaving for holidays knowing that you have worked to your maximum capacity and given your very best.

Results from Term 4 will accumulate with Term 3 results to produce a Semester result that will be used to determine academic medals.

Reports will be available from Monday December 10 on the Parent Lounge and will give outcomes from Term 4, Semester 2 and an annual result. Reports will also include comments from teachers offering strategies to enhance future results or to sustain current results.

Thank you Terrace for such a great journey, how blessed I have been to witness every day at work, for 24 years, where I truly enjoyed each day. It has been a privilege to have shared in the lives of so many wonderful young men and such a supportive community.

To steal a quote from Tim McGraw:

We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere.

I know that I will take a little from all of Terrace’s fine young men into my life’s journey ahead.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

When I went to school, the world was a far simpler place.  As a school student, I did not have access to computers, mobile phones, gaming consoles and the like.  While these devices bring great entertainment, they also come with their issues, as most parents will have experienced.  They present an ongoing challenge for both teachers and parents.  The latest devices that I would never have predicted to be a problem are the ‘Lime’ electric hire scooters that have suddenly appeared around the streets of Brisbane.  A number of our older students have started to use them to travel to and from school during the exam period, which causes us great concern for student safety.  In the interests of safety, students are not to ride these scooters as a means of transport to or from school.  I am deeply concerned that someone might make a mistake around the busy inner-city that leads to a tragedy.  While the school year is over, I want to get this message out now, so that students are aware of our expectations when the new year commences.  I would appreciate parents supporting us with this important safety issue.

As we close out another academic year, I would like to acknowledge the College Pastoral Team, who work hard in caring for and forming the Gentlemen of Terrace.  Their expert input into the pastoral care program has been invaluable and I feel extremely fortunate to be amongst the talent that exists within the team.  I thank all members of the team for their efforts and I look forward to them continuing their great work in 2019.  In particular, I would like to extend the gratitude of all in the community to Mrs Jo Tarlington whose dedication to the College is truly remarkable.  Student Services could not function as it does without Jo’s constant efforts.

The building program in 2018 has presented its challenges in a crowded school, thus we are very excited about the middle of next year, when a significant amount of space is returned to the students.

As we enter the holiday period, I am very conscious that an education at Terrace is a family effort.  It is very clear that many parents also look forward to the holidays as a well-deserved break from the routines of uniforms, homework, lunches and early morning training.  I want to thank and congratulate all of our parents on the way you support the partnership with school as a means of getting the best out of your sons.  You deserve a break and I hope the holiday period is restful.  All the very best to all members of the Terrace Family for a peaceful, happy and holy Christmas break.  I look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Book Hire Reminder

Your assistance is greatly appreciated in reminding your son/s to empty their lockers, clear their desks and return all text books to Book Hire by this Friday 30 November.

Any outstanding books should be returned no later than Friday 7 December. Please check the Terrace App for further details on books that should be kept for 2019 by current Year 11 students.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

What are we waiting for?

In our Church, Advent is the time to slow down and wait with patience. This is a big challenge for us. With holidays just around the corner, we are tempted to hurry and get ready for Christmas. While it is important for us to be ready with gifts, we also need to be ready in our hearts to receive the greatest gift, the gift of the life of Jesus.

This weekend the First Sunday of Advent starts. As we are not galvanised by school life for the Advent season, it is important for us to share the messages of Advent before embarking on holidays. The next four weeks is time for us to consider and share the messages of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Everyday these messages are alive here at Terrace. When our young men put on the Red and Black tie, when our families gather as House groups, when we form friendships with others beyond our gates and when we share time at Tennyson or at pick-up, we are being Hopeful, Peaceful, Joyous and Loving to each other.

Hope

The red and black of our College tie is a symbol of hope. As our young men put on their College tie each and everyday, they are committing themselves to doing their best with being a Terrace Gentleman. They are committing themselves to being beacons of hope for others. When we hopeful for others, and others fill us with hope, we are encouraged to be at our best. Advent reminds us that the birth of Jesus is a sign of hope that God’s promises for each of us will be kept.

Peace

The tais cloth of Timor-Leste is a symbol of peace. Our College prayer that we pray at the end of each day asks us to invite others to be our friends. Not just any friends, but friends who use Jesus as the model of friendship. This year we have continued to strengthen our relationship with our friends of Timor-Leste and of each of our House Friendship Groups. By welcoming others into the story of Jesus, we are signs of peace for each other and our world.

Joy

The House we belong to here at Terrace is a symbol of joy. When we gather as House communities we celebrate the joy that lies in spending time with each other. By spending time with each other we are being present to each other. Being there for others. Laughing with others.  Encouraging others. Advent is a time for celebrating the joy that lies in the birth of Jesus’ and his life example of walking with others.

Love

The Celtic cross on our crest symbolises God as a loving presence in our lives. It is no coincidence that our large Celtic cross will soon return and be placed at our new Rogers St gate. The Celtic cross reminds us that our everyday interactions with each other are an opportunity to care for others.  By caring for each other, we are a loving presence to each other.

I truly hope the upcoming Advent season allows you to answer the “Why are we waiting?” question. Let us know that at the centre of the gift pile this Christmas are the gifts of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. May the holiday period bless you and your family with these gifts.

The Good News of Terrace – Our Year 6 Terracians celebrating their End of Year Mass with their families.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Damien Cuddihy

The 2018 Waterford cohort has finished the year exceptionally well and should be congratulated on what has been an excellent year across a multitude of areas. The year spent at Waterford traditionally witnesses a great deal of change in the life of a young man. It is sometimes difficult to notice these changes when you are in day to day contact with an individual, but as I have often said, the House Deans on the main campus always comment after their entry to Year 11, on how a significant number of the boys have developed socially and emotionally since Year 9.

On behalf of the Waterford staff I would like to thank both the parent body and the students for your support throughout the year. We have enjoyed the journey with your sons throughout the year and wish you all a safe and enjoyable Christmas and hope the New Year brings a refreshed approach to the challenges of the new Senior schooling program.

Years 5 and 6 Program Leader | Mr Brendan Ganley

With only one day remaining to the close of the 2018 school year, excitement is in the air. Today our Years 5 and 6 students enjoyed a day at Wet ‘n Wild. This was a great occasion for our youngest men to finish off the year, especially after a busy Term 4.

This week we celebrated the end of 2018 with our annual Year 5 and Year 6 masses in the chapel. It was a wonderful, prayerful occasion to reflect on how far each student from Years 5 and 6 has grown and matured over the course of the year.

Congratulations must go to the young men of Years 5 and 6 for the enthusiasm and dedication with which they challenged themselves to achieve individual goals. Our Year 6 students will now move into secondary education having gained especially from the learning experiences of their primary school years.

Many thanks to the Years 5 and 6 core teachers, Mrs Maryanne Costi, Mrs Kitty Hopton, Ms Jane Williams, Mrs Victoria Holt, Mr Nick Gill, Mr Darren Brown, Mr Deen Mewburn and Mrs Donna Compton. You have been outstanding in your professional approach to the learning tasks and with your desire to challenge these young men to strive for success.

Finally, to the families of Years 5 and 6, I wish you the best for the Christmas holiday period. It is time to share with family and friends and hopefully it is a time to stop and enjoy the peace and joy that the Christian message brings. We move into the First Sunday of Advent this weekend as a time to prepare and to play our part to bring new hope and joy to our world.

Merry Christmas and see you all safe and enthusiastic for another great year at Terrace in 2019.

Conor’s Long Lunch

Last Saturday, at Conor’s Long Lunch, we witnessed an incredible outpouring of community support for our friend Conor, as well as enjoying the most remarkable gathering of people sharing affection and their generosity. The Gregory Terrace Family, and the “extended” family that came along to join in were astonishing in the way they came together as a group and supported our own. I know the day was a huge success in every way, not just in raising valuable funds for Conor’s rehabilitation and ongoing care, but in community building. We are all so fortunate and extremely grateful to be part of this wonderful school.

Congratulations and thank you to the amazing team who put Conor’s Long Lunch together. Everyone I talk to says it is one of the best events they have been to.
