2020T1W1 Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

Welcome to the 2020 Academic year. I trust the Christmas and New Year holiday periods were relaxing and enjoyable.

I extend a special welcome to those students and parents who join the Terrace Family in 2020.  As we celebrate 145 years of providing a quality Catholic education in the Edmund Rice tradition, you are now part of the rich fabric we call the 'Terrace Family’.

Over the holiday period, College staff and others worked diligently to ensure the grounds and buildings looked cleaned and refreshed for the start of the year.  My thanks to the staff and the many Year 12 students who attended the working-bee last Thursday to put the finishing touches on the College grounds and classrooms.

Earlier this year, I sent my ‘beginning of the year’ letter.  Included in this letter were details regarding the new staff commencing at Terrace and the reorganisation of the College Leadership Team for 2020.  I take this opportunity to welcome our new staff, I am confident they will be great assets to Terrace, in and out of the classroom.

Over the first two days of this week, we have welcomed all the students back to the 2020 year.  The CLT also met with all year levels during this week.  A strong and clear message at these year level meetings was the importance of ‘starting well’ and ‘starting early’.  The holidays were a chance to rest and recharge, and now the discipline and organisation of school takes place.  It is important that all students start quickly and positively.

Over the holidays, many staff, students, parents and coaches spent time involved in the various camps, clinics, games and rehearsals.  My thanks to all involved in this important part of the College.  The GPS seasons will commence over the coming weeks and I wish all players the very best with the upcoming seasons.  I remind all players that it is important that we compete, but it is even more important ‘how’ we compete. The highest level of sportsmanship should characterise the Terrace sportsman.

Over the coming weeks, the College will host information nights for all year levels.  These nights allow parents/caregivers and a range of staff to connect, be updated on relevant information and form the connections between home and the College.  I strongly encourage parents to attend these nights.  The Terrace Ladies Group will provide some food and drinks at the conclusion of the Years 5, 6, 7 and 10 Information Nights.  I look forward to catching up with many of you at the evenings.

As you may be aware, health authorities across the nation are currently responding to the emergence in Australia of the Coronavirus that has emanated from China.

Please see attached information from Queensland Health that includes advice that if children become sick (e.g. fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, headaches, breathing difficulties) after having recently had links to Wuhan or the Province of Hubei within China, or in contact with someone who is a confirmed case, they should consult their GP or health provider without any delay (via phone in the first instance) and not attend school while unwell.

Health authorities have now provided the following additional advice:

  • anyone who has been in contact with any confirmed novel Coronavirus cases must self-isolate (self-isolation means staying at home and not accepting visitors) for 14 days following exposure;
  • travellers who have visited Hubei Province of China need to self-isolate for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province;
  • returned travellers who have visited China cannot attend school, childcare or TAFE for 14 days after leaving China including Hong Kong.

The College always follows the advice of public health authorities in these circumstances and we ask you to be especially aware of this current situation in the interest of public health.

Thank you for your support in relation to this matter.

Finally, I again welcome all our Terrace Family to 2020.  It will be an important year for our College as we celebrate 145 years. I am very much looking forward to our journey together.

Have a great week.
God Bless.

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

Deputy Principal | Mr Damien Fall

A very warm welcome to all in the Terrace Family as we commence another academic year. I trust that everyone was able to take some time to refresh and is returning full of energy for what promises to be a typically busy year at Terrace.

I am delighted to be assuming the position of Deputy Principal, a role that primarily encompasses all matters relating to the staff of Terrace. With in excess of 100 teachers and more than 200 staff in total, this is a complex organisation with plenty to consider in terms of HR, professional development and the pastoral care of staff. I feel incredibly fortunate to hold this position and I look forward to all the joy and challenges that the coming months will bring. Our community welcomes Ms Zoe Morgan back to the CLT as Dean of Communication after a period of maternity leave. Zoe has done a fabulous job in growing this area of the College and her return ensures the College’s communication will continue to be first class.

We commenced the year last Monday with an induction and formation day for new teaching staff. As well as knowing the workings of Terrace, it is also important that staff also know and understand the Edmund Rice story that makes us who we are. We call staff to bring the charism of Edmund alive in their daily dealings with students. All teaching staff spent last week completing a series of important professional development activities covering topics including child protection, pastoral care, behaviour management and compliance, as well as faculty meetings in preparation for this week’s classes. We concluded staff week with a professional development day including addresses from Dr Lee-Anne Perry, Executive Director of QCEC, Ms Pam Betts, Executive Director of BCEC and Mr Joss O’Loan, a Terrace Old Boy and now a GP who runs a ‘Kombi Clinic’ that screens patients for Hepatitis C out of a Kombi Van. All three delivered powerful messages about the power of Catholic Education in transforming lives. As teachers, we are called to give our best in delivering the education that our young men are so fortunate to enjoy.

We congratulate Mr Devon Naeser from our teaching staff, who became engaged to his partner Kate over the holiday period. We also extend our best wishes to our Director of ICT, Mr Shaun Steadman, who became a dad for the second time this week when he and Juliana welcomed baby Lucas. We wish them well with the newest addition to their family.

While my focus is largely on staffing matters, I very much enjoy the relationship with our families at Terrace and I always welcome contact, should you require any advice or assistance. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch if you feel I can be of some help throughout the year. I look forward to another fabulous chapter of the Terrace story in our 145th year.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

Welcome back

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of standing on Treacy Court to welcome some of the new Years 5 and 7 students and parents as they entered the College for the first time. There were lots of excited faces and some nerves.

For these young men and their parents the Terrace journey has begun. This first week has hopefully been a week of new beginnings, new friendships and new opportunities. For those of us who are ‘old hands’ in the Terrace journey, our role this week has been to welcome, answer questions and make our new Terracians as comfortable as possible.

For those students and families returning to familiar grounds, this week is about reconnecting and making the transition from holiday to school mode, to get back into the school day routine and to refocus and reset your academic goals for the year.

From a practical point of view, Term 1 Assessment Calendars have been distributed to students. These calendars are an essential organisational tool for students and the first step on the path to academic success. Students should spend the time now to plan out their time, especially with respect to upcoming assignments. Additionally, during the first part of the term, students in Years 5-10 will spend time in Formation class, learning the process of how to construct a study plan, of which the assessment calendar is the starting point.

I spoke at our first assembly to the student body regarding the following four points to start the academic year:

• Presence – in class be ready to learn, be an active learner, work with your peers and teachers.
• Organisation – the goal this week is to complete a study calendar. Use the assessment calendar as your starting point.
• Persistence – Academic success = consistent effort + time. So, start ASAP.
• Resilience - students will have tough times throughout the year. It’s important for them to ask for assistance and ‘bounce back’ and be persistent.

I look forward to working will all students and parents to ensure the best academic outcomes from the year ahead.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

On behalf of the Pastoral Team at the College, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 2020 school year and especially to those who are new to the Terrace Family. While the rain is certainly much appreciated at this time, it would have been great if it held off another 15 minutes instead of coming down in the middle of the tunnel for our new students on Tuesday. I am sure it generated a laugh at the dinner table on Tuesday night for many of you.

The Pastoral Team at Terrace consists of the House Deans, Counsellors and the Program Leaders, who together with the teaching and support staff, aim to create an atmosphere of care that supports your son throughout his journey at Terrace. The underlying charism of an Edmund Rice education is the nurturing of positive relationships between those in our community. Our vertical pastoral care system and the year spent at Waterford aim to foster this working environment where our students can flourish. The Pastoral Care Group is the foundation stone of our House system and over time will assist your son to develop a strong sense of connection both to his House and to Terrace. I encourage you to contact your son’s Pastoral Care Mentor or House Dean if you have any queries or concerns throughout the year.

The first few days have demonstrated our Seniors commitment to their 2020 motto, Be the One. The energy that they have generated around the new Years 5 and 7 students is a most encouraging sign for the year ahead. It certainly makes an enormous difference for those young men who will, no doubt, be feeling a little nervous about the start of the school year.

The staff at Terrace are committed to maintaining high academic standards at the College. The establishment of routines and expectations around the College is a priority in the first term in creating the tone that is conducive to learning, and we ask for your support in this area. By now, College calendars will have arrived home and I encourage all families to make themselves familiar with upcoming events, including special assemblies, parent information evenings, our Opening Mass and Year 12 Induction, co-curricular rounds and Parent/Mentor interviews. One special event coming up on the 19 February is the Year 8 Father/Son Evening. Information containing a link for bookings to the evening was contained in an email I sent out in mid-January. Terrace is a busy place, hopefully your son will have plenty on his plate this year.

We look forward to our strong relationship with home continuing. Best wishes for the year ahead.

Acting Dean of Identity | Mr Terry Thompson

Be the One

We welcome new families to the Terrace Family. Existing families, welcome back to the 2020 school year. I hope you all had a fulfilling Christmas with loved ones.

Last Friday saw our annual staff spirituality formation day at the Australian Catholic University Education and Leadership centre located next to St Stephen’s Cathedral. This venue was quite fitting, as Terrace was first opened by three Christian Brothers next door in the Pugin Chapel in 1875 before moving to Spring Hill in 1879. The theme for the day was ‘your voice as a teacher in a Catholic school’.

We were blessed with three extraordinary speakers in their own right, Dr Lee-Anne Perry - Executive Director, Queensland Catholic Education Commission,  Ms Pam Betts - Executive Director, Brisbane Catholic Education Commission and Mr Joss O’Loan - GT 2000 and founder of the Kombi Clinic (mobile Hepatitis C screening and treatment service).

Our opening reflection was based around the Parable of the Sower.

A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.  Still, other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Matthew 13: 3-8

In this parable, Jesus talks of a farmer who scattered seed in many different places and at different times in the hope of producing a good crop. During our staff reflection, we considered why the farmer sowed his seed in the first place and why he sowed the seed in different places and at different times. We also thought about ourselves as the farmer, and our role in sowing the seeds of our faith in our students - how we can be the voice as a teacher in a Catholic school.

I believe the farmer was quite deliberate when he scattered the seeds in many different places and during different seasons. Just as teachers will choose different times, places and opportunities to highlight our faith with our students. I also believe the farmer sowed these seeds in the first place because he trusted his skills to produce a good crop – just as we are up to the challenge to care for our students and embed in them a strong appreciation for our faith and a Catholic education.

Each staff member was provided with a packet of seeds as a symbol and reminder to continue to Be the One, to be the farmer, to sow those seeds for their students in 2020 and beyond.

We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise
Oscar Romero

As I move into this new role this year, I want to thank Mr Charles Brauer for his work as Dean of Identity over the last four years. Finally, a big thank you to the Terrace Family for making me so welcome in this new role. I am looking forward to what this year will bring to our community.

Live Jesus in our hearts…forever.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman

At times, commencing secondary school or a new school can be overwhelming for students, it certainly can be for parents as well. Large communities such as Terrace offer many opportunities to our students, this does mean that we work with very busy young men. At the core of this, we must always have the student’s wellbeing and academic progress as a priority.

In Years 7-9 we show students how to plan a weekly routine and to create a term plan for assessment. We do this in Formation class, which is one lesson per week. In this class we cover a balance of study skills, organisational skills and wellbeing topics.

Each week is a project in itself at Terrace and looking ahead can certainly help. Ensure that your son has the ‘Terrace wall planner’ up in his room with his weekly routine and assessment dates, so it is visible every day.

Year 7s find that they have a lot of homework early in Term 1, but then realise that working consistently in class can dramatically cut this down.

Please stay in touch with Pastoral Care Mentors, class teachers and House Deans if any issues arise.

The core of any successful school, team or organisation is hard work. Below are some key dates for parents/caregivers in Term 1. Please attend these events as Terrace has a wonderful relationship between school and home.

Term 1

  • Monday 3 February - Year 7 Parent Information Evening
  • Monday 10 February - Years 8 and 9 Parent Information Evening
  • Wednesday 12 February - Parent Mentor Interviews
  • Wednesday 19 February - Year 8 Father/Son night
  • Wednesday 4 March - ‘Gaming’ Parent Information Evening - guest speaker Cam Adair

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Here we come 2020!

Happy new year. Terrace Culture is excited for the new year and all that 2020 will bring. The Music Premier Ensembles and Debaters had their January camp, while the leads of this year’s production School of Rock met up several times to hone their playing, singing, dancing and acting. This year the students will play live onstage. As usual we are ready for a year of amazing experiences for our students.

Make sure you stay in touch with all things Culture on social media and Parent Lounge.

Australian Chess Federation results

I would like to congratulate the following on acquiring ACF (Australian Chess Federation) ratings.

  • Yang Zhang: 1577
  • Alex Ong: 849
  • Jack Giufre: 1077
  • Joshua Alfredson: 951
  • Ben Zhang: 698
  • Patrick Nix: Needs one more game to receive a rating.
  • Justin Jeyarajah: Needs two more games to receive a rating.

Since 2013 only three players from Terrace have achieved an ACF rating. This result is an impressive achievement. Likewise, Yang Zhang is now the second highest rated Terrace player since 2000, overtaking both Wen Zhang (2014-2018) and Fraser Young (2010-2014).

Congratulations also to the boys who competed at the 2020 Australian Junior Chess Championship in January at The Southport School.

Director of Music | Mr Jan Hewerdine

Welcome to Terrace Music for 2020 to continuing students in our program as well as new students who will be joining us for the first time. The year had a great start with our annual Music Camp which was held at both Terrace and Brookfield last week. This was a great opportunity for our Senior ensembles to bond and make headway on the repertoire for the year. By the end of the camp, the groups were sounding very strong indeed, promising a great year ahead for Terrace Music! Once again, we held a concert which featured a visiting professional musician and some of our students. We were also privileged to have as guest speaker Mr Michael Griffin who addressed staff and students on the topic of practice. Our thanks to the dedicated Music staff for their work with the boys. For your forward planning, next year’s camp will take place from 18 to 22 January (TBC).

Congratulations to the Red Thunder Drumline who performed on Tuesday for the welcoming tunnel for the new Years 5 and 7 students and the SWE on their first performance of the year at College Assembly on Wednesday morning.

Year 5 Classroom Music

On Monday 3 February (Week 2) we will be handing out instruments to your sons. In most cases, we were able to assign one of the choices nominated. However, it was not always possible to give one of the preferences. The aim is to find a balance between the need to provide a positive experience for the student, the availability of instruments and creating balanced ensembles. We ask that whatever instrument was assigned to your son, that they enter into the experience with an open mind. The choice of instrument is secondary to the overall journey of music making.

Music lessons, Speech and Drama lessons and all ensemble rehearsals, unless otherwise notified, will have commenced this Thursday in Week 1. You should have received an email notification of lesson times and ensemble involvement. If you have not done so, please contact music@terrace.qld.edu.au The ensemble rehearsal schedule is available through the Terrace App under Culture | Music.

A reminder that the Terrace App is used to store and disseminate information such as the Music and Speech and Drama handbooks, the weekly rehearsal schedule and event memos for performances. There will still be some information found on the College website, but it will be of a more general nature.

Performance and workshop notifications are emailed via Parent Lounge and will be used to ascertain who will be attending performances and for roll marking. Could I ask that you respond promptly to these notifications as we use this information, among other things, to generate rolls and book transport (when applicable).

Please keep in mind that it is expected that all members of an ensemble participate in all performances, but we understand that from time to time there may be circumstances that prevent attendance. If you are declining a tour, could you also please inform the ensemble director and cc music@terrace.qld.edu.au

Finally, as these notices only go out to parents, could you please discuss the event with your son to ensure he has the details entered in his calendar. You and he will be able to view the Event Memo via the Terrace App. Links to Parent Lounge will be mentioned in this Terrace News article as they become available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Music Department  music@terrace.qld.edu.au

A full list of each term’s events is included at the end of this article and will be updated as required. This list will contain a basic outline of each event with more detailed information being sent directly to those involved via the Parent Lounge.

Welcome to Term 1 Sport

On behalf of the Sports office I would like to welcome all families to another year of Terrace Sport.

Throughout the holidays, Term 1 in-season activities - Rowing, Cricket, Volleyball and Swimming have been putting the finishing touches to their preseason preparation for this week’s Round 1 competition and various lead up meets.

• Rowing: Camps at Bundaberg, Grafton and Boonah plus internal testing and training.
• Cricket: Tours to Perth and Adelaide. Cricket clinics. Christian Brothers' cricket week. Various trials and training.
• Volleyball: Internal trials and training
• Swimming: Training plus a camp at the Sunshine Coast.

Thank you to all families, boys and coaches who have made themselves available for training over this period, in preparation for the start of the GPS fixtures and the upcoming championships.  It is not always easy to juggle sporting commitments with family needs at all levels. Your time and commitment are appreciated.

As well as these in-season Term 1 sports, our Term 2 sports start preseason with Cross Country, Tennis, Gymnastics and Football preparation.  Please read the individual details around sign on and training commitments.  Please note in-season sport takes precedence over preseason training.

Students of all abilities are catered for, supported and encouraged to compete in the Sports program. The elements of representing Terrace - playing with your mates, teamwork and discipline - allow for each young man to create their own experience here at Terrace.

Support Groups

Parents/caregivers can support our Sport programs through dedicated Support Groups.  Support Groups meet regularly, and all parents are most welcome to play an active role in supporting their sons and our programs.  Please check the College calendar for dates.

Parent Lounge

Participation in the College Sport program is growing and will continue to do so due to the quality of the programming that allows for all levels of participation and quality of coaching across the individual sports.  With around 1200 students participating each GPS weekend in sport, the flow of communication to this number of families is extremely important in keeping everybody informed. It is vital to ensure sure you sign-on electronically via Parent Lounge for in-season and preseason activities offered each term.

Attendance at training

I would ask that all boys commit to their attendance at training and present ready for their games, home or away and lead-up meets. Representing the College is something to be valued. Being a team member who can be depended on entails sacrifice and commitment, no matter what level or activity.

Uniform

Please be aware that all Directors, Coordinators and coaches have been asked to monitor training and playing uniform.  We want to ensure we are representing the College and ourselves on and off the field with the highest standards.

Communication

To remain up to date, please download the College app and select to receive notifications for the selected activities of your son/s. You will find updates, training schedules, team lists, playing schedules, game/meet locations and further information under the individual sport.

Please note we are moving away from ongoing email communication, with the College App the main source of communication.

If you have any questions please refer to the College app or contact the Director or Coordinator of that sport.  Anything further please email Terrace Sport sport@terrace.qld.edu.au

Have a great Term 1 in Terrace Sport.

College Captain, Sam Dutton

When I was a new Terracian in Year 5, I was influenced and inspired by the men in the years above me. Today I am still inspired by the men who have now left this great College to chase careers and endeavours they have challenged themselves to pursue.

Though not a Terracian, there is another man who has impacted my life, especially when I doubted myself or needed inspiration.

That man’s name is Kurt Fernley. You may know Kurt for his wide beaming smile or for his achievements as an Australian wheelchair racer who has won two gold medals at the Paralympics. You may also know of his incredible exploits to commit himself to crawl all 96-kilometres of the Kokoda track. Completing the journey in 2009, Kurt endured over ten arduous days of crawling. This achievement was an incredible challenge that many still don’t complete.

After reading his book at the age of ten, I was drawn to his commitment to challenge himself and inspire others.

To me, he epitomises what it means to be a Terrace Gentlemen; to inspire and try your best.

I know he may not have walked through these gates, but his values are the values we celebrate at Terrace. For those of you who have only just set foot into this College, in the coming weeks and months you will become accustomed to the term 'Terrace Gentleman'. For those of you who have been at the College for longer, it becomes evident that putting those values into practice underpins the culture of this College.

This phrase, coined by Br Kearney in the 1950s, is carried by the spirit of students around the College today; modelling the values that define Terrace.

We all have the chance to carry the spirit of the Terrace Gentleman every day, just like Kurt Fernley, Be the One to inspire others! You have the power to Be the One. Be the One to help a student find their class. Be the One to have a chat with someone new. Be the One to smile in the corridors. Be the One to stand up on the bus and Be the One to thank your teacher and coach for their time in helping you learn.

I look forward to meeting all the new Terrace Gentlemen who no doubt, like Kurt, are up for the challenge to take on new learnings and inspire others at and beyond Terrace. You determine how you can Be the One

Have a great first week.
