Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

This week the Year 12 students have been engaged with the QCS tests. It was two demanding days for the students. However, their approach and commitment across the days was extraordinary and I congratulate them for this. I also thank the Year 12 parents who banded together to provide lunch for the students. Your support and care for your sons is outstanding. This support was further typified by the ‘QCS Tunnel’ that was formed on Tuesday morning. The whole school was behind our Year 12 students. The Terrace Family has been alive and well this week.

Throughout this year, a number of Terrace students have represented Australia in a variety of activities. This list continues with Hughston Parle being selected to represent Australia in Chess at the FIDE World Chess Federation Under 16 Youth Chess Olympiad. Hughston will play Board 1. Congratulations Hughston on this outstanding achievement.

Last Wednesday night the Year 10.1 Debating Team secured victory in the QDU Grand Final. This is an outstanding result and on behalf of all within the Terrace Family I congratulate George Bozikis, Declan Hackett, Cyril Mathews, Scott Moran and Alex Sullivan on their success. Well done Gentlemen.

There are two remaining rounds of co-curricular activities this term. Both are home games and it would be an excellent way to complete what has been a successful season for Chess, Basketball and Rugby, by having good support at each of these activities.

As I noted previously, I begin my Sabbatical Leave as of this Friday. I return to the College on Monday 16 October. During my leave, I will be spending some time working with Edmund Rice International in Geneva as well as visiting the Christian Brothers in Rome, at the Vatican. I am looking forward to the opportunity to participate in these activities and visiting some very special places. As previously mentioned, Mr Chris Ryan will be the Acting Principal, Mr Damien Fall the Acting College Dean and Mr Damien Cuddihy the Acting Dean of Students during my absence. I wish them all the best with these roles, confident in the knowledge that they will do a very good job.

As this is my last Terrace News for the term, I do want to thank you for the strong support you have given during the term. It is always a busy time in Term 3. However, the support and commitment of the staff, parents and students has again ensured a successful term.

I wish our students the best in their upcoming exams and hope that all families will have a restful September break. I look forward to returning to Terrace in October.

College Principal

We wish Dr Carroll well for his study leave and look forward to his return in Week 3 of Term 4. I am looking forward to the privilege of acting as Principal during this time and thank the community for their support in advance. I take this opportunity to wish Mr Damien Fall well for his time as Acting College Dean for this period. It will be a pleasure to work closely with him.

Mrs Cathy McDonald, who works in the College Library, has returned from leave but will work two days a week for the remainder of this term. During this time we welcome Mr Callum Hornsby in a part time library aide role.

Ms Aimee Myatt commenced at the College this week as a Graphic Designer working on our various publications and documents. We welcome her for this year whilst Mrs Alex Ardourel is on maternity leave.

We also welcome back Mrs Anne Kirkwood to the Studies Office this week. This is especially good timing as Mrs Kirkwood does so much organisational work for the Queensland Core Skills Test Program. We thank Mrs Cath Gooley for relieving for Mrs Kirkwood while she was on leave and now Mrs Gooley transitions to relieving for Mrs Kath Wilson, Assistant to Dean of Studies, Mrs Julie Quinn while Mrs Wilson enjoys some annual leave.

Queensland Core Skills Test

On Tuesday and Wednesday our Senior students completed the two day testing of the Queensland Core Skills test. This test provides scaling parameters of final Senior results between both schools and subjects within schools. The results are not released until the Year 12 students have completed their year.

Our Seniors are to be commended on the effort and commitment made across these two days. Their focus and motivation to do well were outstanding and as I have quoted to the boys throughout the year- they deserve to do well. The theme for the Writing task paper this year was “what lasts”?

Year 8

A reminder to our Year 8 students that they must electronically lodge their two option subjects for next year. The relevant form must be printed and signed by the student and a parent and handed in to Mr Coman.

Year 9

A reminder to Year 9 students that every Friday morning at 7.30am in the GT125 theatre , Mr Coman conducts Friday roll call sessions. This is a very efficient way of making sure you understand the learning required in your core subjects. I strongly encourage boys to attend these sessions.

Exams

Next week is the start of exams for many students. Many boys have worked very hard this term and these exams will be recognition and reward for this commitment.

Below are some strategies for successful outcomes in exams:

The night before the exam

1. Make sure you have checked and packed the required equipment.
2. Go over rules, dates or any other rote learning that is required.
3. Mentally list off every topic and key points in the topics that you have covered in the exam subject during the term.
4. Make sure you get adequate sleep the night before the exam.

On the day of the exam

1. Make sure you have a good breakfast.
2. On arrival at school do not get caught up in ‘panic conversation’ that could undermine your confidence.
3. Plan your strategy for time allocation prior to the exam.
4. Be positive and confident! If you have worked hard during the term this is the time when you deserve to be rewarded. Go into the exam feeling strong and confident – do not doubt yourself.
5. During perusal read the paper carefully. Use a highlighter to remind or make yourself aware of key points.
6. During the exam be aware of the time. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to answer a question when you know how to do it!
7. Work hard for the whole duration of the exam. Check, check and re-check your work until it is time to hand in your paper.

Remember the 3 ‘Ps’ – Prepare, practise and persevere.

Last Friday, Queensland Reds player Andrew Ready (GT 2010), spoke at the Gorilla Gathering about his time at Terrace. In his Senior year, Andrew played hooker for the 1^st XV and was also selected in the Australian Schoolboys team. The comment that caught my attention was his reflection on how he misses how much he enjoyed being around his friends at school. Whilst I know that travelling through high school can certainly have its rough patches, we can sometimes fall into the trap of focusing on what’s wrong with school rather than what’s great about school. When I walk through the yard at lunchtime or in corridors between lessons, I constantly come across group after group of boys who are laughing and really enjoying the pro-social interactions with those around them. The sense of community that Andrew was referring to is still very much alive and well at Terrace today. The QCS tunnel is another example of the genuine enjoyment that the boys get from supporting the seniors on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Likewise, the next two Saturdays are great opportunities to spend time enjoying some of the best that a school community can offer, either out at Tennyson or in the Campbell Centre supporting the Basketballers. The willingness of the boys to be a part of Terrace, whether it be a QCS tunnel or sitting in the grandstands cheering the 1^st XV, is a special aspect of school that can get overlooked on occasion. As the boys often say, ‘get around it’.

Put quite simply, values are those things that are most important to us here at Terrace. I often refer to Terrace as a values-based organisation; a place where our actions are heavily influenced by values such as respect, humility, commitment, honesty and courage. Our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, championed these values in all he encountered. As part of their formation as Terrace Gentlemen, our students regularly hear messages about the importance of living our values. This year’s College Captain, Ryan Gassman uses #18000strong as catchphrase for the College to reinforce the message that they belong to something bigger than themselves. As we journey through the year with our Seniors the milestones are gradually getting ticked off and certainly, this week has been one of the more significant ones. Well done Seniors.

Exams commence next week and I wish all students the best at this important time. Years 11 and 12 students commence exam block on Wednesday and Years 7 to 9 on Friday. I have spoken with these students about expectations during this time, including the need to meet our usual standards regarding punctuality and personal presentation. This is a busy time and the coming weeks will be critical in determining the outcomes of all students. I trust that all students are working hard to produce their very best.

Treacy House Friendship Group | Orange Sky Laundry

Orange Sky Laundry - the House Friendship Group for Treacy House - is the world’s first mobile laundry and shower service for the homeless. Founded in 2014, two Old Boy Treacy House captains, Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi, started the company in their first year out of Terrace. Orange Sky started with a single van in Brisbane and have since expanded across the nation with the support of Treacy House and many generous donators. The most recent addition to the fleet, “Laurie” is the flagship van of the Orange Sky Showers Initiative.

In support of our friends at Orange Sky, Treacy last week enjoyed their annual Treacy Fair. This initiative is part of our ongoing support of Orange Sky and offers each Tutor Group in Treacy the chance to create and run their own stall. The Treacy boys collectively raised just under $1300, contributing to our goal of $4000 this year. Mr Hawthorne’s Tutor Group, Treacy A, raised just under $500 with their ‘Lob a Choc’ game.

As a further fundraiser for our House Friendship Group, every Treacy student was given the mission to assemble a collection of toiletries – necessities in life which most of us take for granted. This was a practical fundraiser so the Treacy men can see the direct affect their contribution has on our homeless friends. These toiletry bags go together with the successful launch of the Orange Sky Showers Initiative, and are a great way for Treacy House to help their community.

Members of Treacy House also participated in the annual Bridge to Brisbane on Sunday. The aim of this initiative was to raise awareness for Orange Sky Laundry by pushing mobile washing machines along the 5km course. It was an excellent opportunity for the boys to promote this wonderful organisation to the public.

‘Five-second’ moments spent with our young men can be so critical to building meaningful relationships. Past Terrace staff member, Brother Damien Price, states that ‘a one-size fits all’ approach just does not work when you step into the space that is the world of boys. He recommends that if we want our boys to engage and to be challenged we as educators, teachers and parents need to set aside time to build up an understanding of the ‘world’ of each student. Finally, when we are reminding boys of being mindful of right choices and when they have created a positive outcome through their choice, the behaviour not the person is the focus of our interaction.

Tonight, we welcome our newest members to the Terrace family with our Year 5 Orientation Night. It is a nervous time at first until they meet their buddies. We also offer a big welcome to our new families to Terrace. Not only is it a big first year for your son, but also hopefully the beginning of a rewarding association with the Terrace Community.

A big thank you to all Year 5 and 6 families for your support of the Food Bank Drive this year. It was another incredible response in support of Food Bank’s goal of An Australia without Hunger. Close to 1500 items once again were donated.

A reminder to parents of Year 5 and 6 that our annual Science Fair will take place in the Campbell Centre on Thursday 14 September (final day of term). The morning will commence at 9am and conclude at 10.30am. All parents and family are most welcome.

Last week in our assembly, we gave Young Terracian awards to students in Year 5 and 6 who have been setting fine examples, creating positive habits and being a Terrace Gentleman around the College.

With exam calendars in circulation, revision and time planning becomes important. Are my notes in order for each subject? Have I visited the term outline and check list so that I am aware of the topics that will be covered?

Plan, check, revise and check again are the keys to success.

As a very busy Term 3 for Culture draws to a close, I thought I would take the opportunity to recap the year for Culture so far, it has been a highly successful year for Terrace Culture and one we can be very proud of.

Debating

This year has been very successful for our debaters with our largest number of debaters in several years. The highlights for Debating:

• 57 Teams in GPS & QDU - totalling 230 boys from Years 5 – 12 debating for Terrace.
• Equal 2^nd in the GPS competition.
• The 10.1 team are the current state QDU champion debaters.

Chess

The following are our Chess highlights:

• There are 80 boys who have represented Terrace in Chess.
• Our Chess Vice Captain, Hughtston Parle, is the current Under 18 Australian Champion will play for Australia at the World Youth Chess Olympiad in India later this year.

Theatresports

Another successful year for Theatresports which is also growing in popularity.

• Four teams in the Youth Theatresports Competition.
• Two teams are in the Grand Finals.

Public Speaking

Our Public Speakers have proven themselves winners in various competitions throughout the year. The highlights include:

• Year 8 student Luke Ames was the runner up of the 2017 Rostrum Youth of the Year Queensland Competition.
• Year 11 Student Charlie Parer was the runner up Australian Champion for 2017 Auction Idol.
• Year 12 Student and College Vice Captain William Cook won the Best Speaker trophy at the Lions Youth of the Year competition.

Mooting

• From 76 teams nationwide, our Mooting team were awarded 2^nd place at the Bond University National High School Mooting Competition.
• Two of our speakers, Xavier Clark and Connor Wright were awarded with Individual Oralist Award.

Musical

The 2017 Middle School Musical “Shrek Jnr” sold out in two days and saw 50 boys perform to an audience of over 400 members of the Terrace Family.

Speech and Drama

Our speech and Drama program is also growing from strength to strength.

• A total of 75 students participated in Speech and Drama tuition.
• Year 12 student, Fergus Gregg has completed Grade 7 examinations and was awarded the highest mark in Queensland.
• Old Boy, Tom Loudon (GT 2016) – Highest mark in Australia in for his CBCA in Voice and Communications.

Music

Our Music program has also had a very busy year with tours and concerts for all involved in Terrace Music.

• Over 600 students are enrolled in our Music Program.
• At the QCMF held this term, 29 ensembles performed. This was the second largest music program in over 130 schools competing.
• A group of 47 students travelled to the Music For All in America over the June/July holidays.

Chess – Round 8

The penultimate round for Chess is this Friday against Toowoomba Grammar at Terrace. A large crowd of Red and Black will certainly lift our team. Please come and show your support.

As the term begins to wind down, I would like to thank all our musicians for the efforts they have put in so far this year. In the next edition of this report, and in the next few weeks, I will begin advertising the program for Term 4 and posting Event Memos.

Tonight, our young musicians will be out in force with the Red Concert Band, Callan Red String Ensemble and Terrace Youth Choir performing for the Year 5 2018 Orientation evening. This weekend will see the Red Thunder Drumline performing at the Rugby for the second time this season. This will be their penultimate performance for the Rugby season and on the following weekend they will be joined by the Terrace Rock Band.

Congratulations to the Terrace Jazz Combo for their performance at College Assembly this week. Next week, the Red Thunder Drumline and Terrace Rock Band will be performing for the final College Assembly for Term 3.

The Jazz Music Institute (JMI) is opening auditions for entry into their courses for 2018. Auditions are available by appointment from September 2017 through January 2018. To find out how to apply for JMI courses, visit their How To Apply page

Talkin’ Jazz will be holding a performance workshop, for interested students, at the Brisbane Jazz Club during the September school holidays. This is always an exciting opportunity for those who have a strong grasp of their instrument and are interested in learning more about jazz. More information can be found by clicking here.

Track and Field

A record number of boys attended the Metropolitan North Regional selection trials last week at the University of Queensland. A good number of boys qualified on the Metropolitan North team and will go on to compete at the upcoming Queensland Secondary Schools State Athletics Championships in late October. Well done to all the boys who attended, with many recording stand out personal bests in a variety of events. Those who applied themselves at training showed great improvement in their performances.

Special mention to Declan Madden (Year 11) who competed in the Open Triple jump and produced a personal best, jumping over a meter further than his previous best in 2017.

Nick Beall (Year 12) also produced an outstanding performance in winning the Open 100m comfortably and backing this up with a personal best in the 200m to gain silver.

Oliver Seawright (Year 10)not only won the Under 16 - 1500m in what was one of the most exciting middle distance races of the Metropolitan North Trials, but also eclipsed a longstanding record which was set back in 1999. Oliver also finished with a silver in the 3000m.

Track and Field Meet #2 – BSHS

The Track and Field program entered more athletes at an early season meet than previous years, with over 70 boys making the effort to attend and compete against our associated schools. Coach Grigorieva was blown away by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the boys, and was extremely pleased with the boy’s efforts.

Performing in racing conditions, under pressure enhances an athlete’s development. Giving your best at training is great, but having the opportunity to give your best with competitors from associated schools and rehearse your race strategy coupled with race execution is the ideal path for improvement.

Keep note of your distance and time – identify the athletes around you and see if you can get one step ahead of them.

A lot of good athletes will identify mini battles/competition s within their events. If you’re coming 7^th, try as hard as you can to come 5^th and if you get there, get to 4^th.

I love watching the track races where you can see those boys who can identify their place and then set themselves a small personal goal to get one place better, then another, then another. The great Sebastian Coe – Olympic Gold Medalist – raced in exactly this manner. He would make every placing a personal challenge to better his opponent – every place mattered, every position mattered. In the end, he would find himself near the top of the pack and from there he could make a choice – his destiny was in his hands.

One of the most outstanding features from the Track and Field Meet on Friday evening was the leadership shown by the Seniors. There is a lot to do at a Track and Field meet and the Year 11 and Year 12 boys certainly stood up and took the lead. Peer leadership – boys mentoring and leading has the greatest impact upon the boys. Great to see! So, let’s aim for more from the top this Friday evening.

Cross Country

The 2017 Australian Cross Country Championships descended on the City of Wollongong last weekend with the Kembla Joggers welcoming the nation's best distance runners to their purpose-built cross country facility. Terrace was fortunate to have our 2017 Cross Country Captain, Nick Erzetic representing Queensland in the Under 18 men’s division.

Wollongong provided the perfect setting for extremely fast and great racing and a very successful end to Nick’s incredible commitment to school Cross Country, which commenced as a Year 4 student. Nick finished the Under 18 - 6km event in 12^th place (6^th place for the 17 years’ competitors) and a bronze medal in the team’s event, with Queensland finishing 3^rd.

Athlete Development

Term 3 has yet again seen further evolution within the Athlete Development Program. This term saw the continuation of the ever popular Yoga and Pilates sessions which have proven to be an integral part of the Program. As always, our Rugby and Basketball teams have had a great uptake with the injury prevention results proving the success of the program. It was also fantastic to see the introduction and application of our Swimming and Track and Field sports into the Athlete Development Program with high volumes of athletes noted during each of these sessions. So far in 2017 we have managed to implement Athlete Development training programs across all GPS sports with the goal to have all athletes involved in a year round strength and conditioning program to further increase their development and sporting performance.

Although Term 4 seems to be the winding down term of the year, it is contradictory to the Athlete Development calendar. Term 4 sees the greatest volume of athletes participating in specific preseason and in season sporting programs. These programs include Volleyball, Cricket, Swimming, Football, Rowing and Track and Field. We also see the continuation of our yoga and pilates sessions as they play an important role in complementing our strength and conditioning programs. These sessions are open to all students wanting to participate in core strength and stretching sessions and are located in room 5.2 of the Brother Tony White building.

Please familiarise yourself with the Term 4 Gym timetable below. As illustrated, it is a very busy term and as always punctuality to each session is important in order to achieve the maximum benefit of the program.

QCS was on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. It’s weird to think that after almost a year of preparation the real deal actually happened! However, in spite of a few nerves, I felt quietly confident. Not because of my own ability – I didn’t learn to tie my shoe laces until Year 4, but because of the dedication that every boy in Year 12 has shown. From Friday afternoons to public holidays, we’ve really given our all. It’s all well and good to pat ourselves on the back for working hard, but I think that most of the praise should go to Mrs Quinn and all the staff who have been so committed to our success. Mrs Quinn, some would say the best QCS coach in Queensland, went above and beyond for us, organising world renowned writing coach, Dr Ian Hunter to give us multiple workshops. To Mrs Quinn, we say thank you. Thank you also to Mrs Anne Kirkwood and Mrs Rhonda Curry, who worked tirelessly to make sure every boy was equipped with the right stationery and that we had all the required materials to have workshops. To the support staff, we say thank you and to the Maintenance Department who have set up the Campbell centre countless times.

QCS is a team effort. Clearly, we are incredibly lucky to have the best team around. Every Year 12 student feels incredibly grateful to be a part of the Terrace Family. We are 18 000 strong.

Year 5 | 2018 Orientation

If you have a son starting at the College in Year 5 next year, please come along this afternoon to the Year 5 Orientation being held from 5 – 7pm. I am sure even our “old” families will find out something new and interesting about the College. Drop by and say hello to the TLG members and grab some light refreshments. The TLG Spring Luncheon fundraising event is on tomorrow, Friday 1 September at Hillstone, St Lucia. We are very excited about it and hope this beautiful sunny weather holds out.

Year 12 QCS

Another cohort of Year 12 Terracians completed their QCS tests on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Well done to the boys and once again, a big thank you to the Year 12 mothers who provided lunch for the boys to keep their energy and concentration levels up!

TLG meeting | Monday 4 September

You are all invited to attend the September TLG meeting, on Monday 4 September. This meeting is the last regular meeting this year, with the TLG Annual General Meeting being held on Monday 9 October. At the September meeting we will be doing a wrap-up from the Spring Luncheon and seeking to gather ideas for 2018 TLG meeting guest speakers and the Mothers’ Retreat, so please come along and bring your suggestions.
