Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

Welcome back to the 2019 school year.  I hope that your Christmas and holiday time was relaxing and enjoyable.

On Tuesday we welcomed our newest members of the Terrace Family.  In Year 5, 135 young Terracians began their Terrace journey, along with 105 new students in Year 7 and 14 students across other year levels.  This year there are 1665 students at Terrace, 221 staff and 1306 families.  The Terrace Family is a large one and I take the opportunity to welcome all to the Terrace Family in 2019.

Over the holidays, building works and maintenance continued around the College. The Mt Sion project has continued to progress well.  The project remains on time and is due for completion by June 2019.  The disruptions around student movement, parking and student drop off remain in place.  I ask all families to limit the use of Rogers Street and Victoria Street for student pickup/drop off wherever possible.  Centenary Pool carpark remains the preferred pickup area for the afternoons.  This is a public carpark facility with many other users of the carpark.  With this in mind, I ask that parents do not park at Centenary Pool in the afternoon but rather continue to do the loop and follow directions of staff on car park duty.  If we can support these initiatives it will ensure smooth pickup and drop off times, as well as cooperating with our neighbours and nearby businesses.  I thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of this aspect of school operations.

Over the holiday period some staff changes have occurred. I detailed some of these changes in my letter earlier this year, however, I would like to provide some additional details regarding staff changes and appointments.

Ms Zoe Morgan, Dean of Communication, will commence her maternity leave at the end of Week 3.  As a result of this, there have been some people assuming Acting roles for the duration of 2019 to cover Zoe’s absence.

  • Acting Dean of Communication – Mr Damien Fall
  • Acting Dean of Students – Mr Damien Cuddihy
  • Acting Dean of Waterford – Mr Luke Gribble
  • Acting Buckley House Dean – Mr Anthony Baruksopulo

These changes commenced from the start of the school year and will be in place for the duration of 2019.  I congratulate all these staff and know that they will be very successful in their new roles.

Another area where some staff changes occurred at the end of 2018 and over the holiday break is in the Sport Office.  After a 17 year association with Terrace, Mr Damian Wright resigned his position as Director of Sport at Terrace at the end of November.  The timing of his decision necessitated the appointment of an Acting Director of Sport.  As previously communicated, Mr Tyron Mandrusiak has accepted this role for Term 1.  It is my intention to advertise the position of Director of Sport during Term 1 with the view of the appointment commencing at the start of Term 2.  Mr Brian Hastings and Mr Jonathon Roussetos both finished their contracts at the end of December and have also finished at Terrace.  To date no appointments for Football Coordinator or Strength and Conditioning Coordinator have been made.  Mr Mitch Edwards, who worked in the Football program in 2018 will initially assist in this area. Mr Jordan McDonald, who worked in the gym in 2018, will continue his work there for Term 1.  Further investigation of the possible structure and composition of the Sport Department will occur during 2019.

Over the coming weeks the College’s co-curricular program will officially commence.  During the Christmas holidays numerous tours, camps, clinics and trials occurred, involving many students, staff and coaches.  I thank and congratulate all involved in these activities. This weekend the GPS sporting season commences with over 1000 Terrace students competing in Swimming, Volleyball, Rowing and Cricket. The GPS Debating season commences next weekend.  I wish all competitors the very best and again remind players and supporters of the importance of sportsmanship and positive support of both Terrace and its opposition.

Term 1 has a number of important Information Nights, assemblies and other events scheduled.  The College calendar, along with the various communication platforms used by the College will detail these events, including times and venues.  I particularly draw your attention to the Information Nights scheduled over the coming weeks.  These are important evenings and I encourage parents to attend.  Parents and caregivers of Years 5 & 6, 7 and 10 are welcome to stay for the TLG refreshments at the conclusion of each of those respective Information Nights.

I trust the start of the school year has been a good one for you and your son/s.  This year will be an exciting year for Terrace and I very much look forward to our journey together.  The Year 12 students have adopted the motto All In and so I encourage you to join with them with the view to jumping All In for 2019.

Have a great week.
God Bless.

Welcome Back

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of standing on Treacy Court to welcome some of the new Years 5 and 7 students and parents as they entered the College for the first time. There were many excited faces and some nerves as they entered Terrace. For these young men and their parents the Terrace journey has begun. This first week has hopefully been a week of new beginnings, new friendships and new opportunities. For those of us who are ‘old hands’ in the Terrace journey, our role this week has been to welcome, answer questions and make our new Terracians as comfortable as possible.

For those students and families returning to familiar grounds, this week is about reconnecting and making the transition from holiday to school mode. To get back into the school day routine and to refocus and reset your academic goals for the year.

From a practical point of view, Term 1 Assessment Calendars have been distributed to students. These calendars are an essential organisational tool for students and the first step on the path to academic success. Students should spend the time now to plan out their time, especially in respect to upcoming assignments. Additionally, during the first part of the term, students in Years 5-10 will spend time in Formation class, learning the process of how to construct a study plan, of which the assessment calendar is the starting point.

I would particularly like to welcome a new member of the studies team, Mrs Loren Serafin-Huey as the new Program Leader: Years 11 and 12. The Program Leader will perform a critical role in working with Senior students in supporting their academic outcomes. In 2019, Loren will have a particular focus on Year 11 and the implementation of the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) processes at the College.

I look forward to working will all students and parents to ensure the best academic outcomes from the year ahead.

Acting Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

On behalf of the Pastoral Team at the College I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 2019 school year, especially to those who are new to the Terrace community. The Pastoral Team consists of the House Deans, Counsellors and Program Leaders who together with the teaching and non-teaching staff aim to create an atmosphere of care that supports your son throughout his journey at Terrace. The underlying charism of any Edmund Rice education is the nurturing of positive relationships between those in our community. Our vertical pastoral care system and the year spent at Waterford aims to foster this working environment, where our students can flourish. The Pastoral Care Group (formerly known as the Tutor Group) is the central pillar within our House system and over time allows your son to develop a strong sense of connection both to his House and Terrace. I would encourage you to contact your son’s Pastoral Care Mentor or House Dean if you have any queries or concerns throughout the year.

The first few days have demonstrated our Seniors commitment to their 2019 motto, All In. The energy that they have generated around the new Year 5 and Year 7 students is a most encouraging sign for the year ahead. It certainly makes an enormous difference for those young men who might be feeling a little nervous about the start of the year in a new schooling environment. The staff at Terrace are committed to maintaining high academic standards at the College. The establishment of routines and expectations around the College is a priority in the first term in creating tone that is conducive to learning and we ask for your support in this area.

By now, College calendars will have come home and I encourage all families to make themselves familiar with upcoming events, including special assemblies, information evenings, our Opening Mass and Year 12 Induction, co-curricular rounds and Parent/Mentor interviews. Terrace is a busy place and hopefully your son will have plenty on his plate this year. We look forward to our strong relationship with home continuing.

Best wishes for the year ahead.

Dean of Identity | Mr Charles Brauer

Where do we begin?

Treacy Court was a buzz of nervous energy on Tuesday morning, or as one young person described this morning – “nervous-citement”! Perfectly knotted ties, squeaky clean shoes, crisp shirts and stiff hats were the common attributes of our new Terracians who met with their Year 11 or 12 Buddy. Soon afterwards our newest Terracians were tunnelled in to the Campbell Centre, welcomed and sent forth on an exciting journey. Before long these same young men were audience to countless smiling faces, all keen on introducing themselves and sharing pieces of wisdom and advice.

Where would you begin if you had to describe the purpose of a Terrace education to a new member of our community?

This is a challenge I regularly face when presenting to various stakeholders. What is digestible and understandable for students, may not be for parents, and vice versa. As we peel back the important layers of our College’s purpose we become closer to discovering our core purpose. Above all, the heart of the Terrace experience is in the building of an atmosphere of care where relationships matter and where the person of Jesus Christ is present to us, in us and through us each day.

When Jesus began his ministry, he laid out his plan for the journey. It is known as ‘The Beatitudes’. On Tuesday morning, as we embarked on our journey together as a renewed Terrace Family, we offered all those gathered in the Campbell Centre the following prayer that reflects the essence of ‘The Beatitudes’:

Jesus, give us the wisdom and courage to be humble. . . in a world that glorifies power and fame.
Give us the wisdom and courage to cry. . . because we know you are with us always.
Give us the wisdom and courage to remain gentle. . . and to be mindful of the truth that all we have and know comes through you.
Give us the wisdom and courage to do what is right. . . even when what is right is not what is popular or easy.
Give us the wisdom and courage to be forgiving. . . because it is easy to forget what you did for us.
Give us the wisdom and courage to be pure of heart. . . even when we feel overwhelmed by uncertainty, fear or a need to be popular.
Give us the wisdom and courage to be peacemakers and friend makers . . in a world torn apart by bullying, gossip and violence.
Jesus, give us the wisdom and courage to serve our loving God by supporting one another to be and become the very best that we can be with you as our brother and guide.
Live Jesus in our hearts….forever!

I wish all members of our Terrace Family all the very best with commencing the school year together. May the year ahead we be blessed with the joy of friendship with each other.

Acting Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

'Respect', 'Excellence' and 'Unity' appear on the Waterford Place crest. These themes were unpacked as we welcomed the new Year 10 boys into the Waterford community and I am happy to say that the cohort has made a very positive start to the year on a number of fronts.

For your information the doors at Waterford open at 7.30am in the morning and reception is attended until 4pm. However, if your son wishes to remain at school to study after 3.10pm they will need go to the Library on the main campus where there is supervision.

As indicated in Dr Carroll’s parent letter, students are not allowed to use mobile phones throughout the day and have been asked to keep the phones in their lockers upon arrival at school. Correspondence with your son throughout the day can be made through  Waterford Student Services (P: 3214 5400) or via email using your son’s school email address. Students can check email accounts frequently throughout the day.

The Year 10 Parent Information and TLG Welcome function evening starts at 6pm at Waterford Place next Thursday night. Please do not hesitate to be in communication early with your son’s Mentor or subject teachers if you have any questions or concerns with his learning. Likewise, please contact me if you would like to discuss any matters involving your son.

I hope 2019 is a very positive experience for your son.

Years 7 to 9 Program Leader | Mr Damien Coman

The start of any school year is a great chance to reset and set goals that are a challenge and then to pursue these with actions. We welcomed our Year 7s into secondary schooling with an Orientation program that included a tour, recording the main areas that students will need to know around the school, a library introduction, an IT readiness program and some introduction games with the staff from the Terrace Outdoor Education centre as Houses will commence camps from Week 2.

All students across Years 7-9 received a Terrace Planner and a checklist booklet at their year level assembly with the College Leadership Team in the first two days. Students will write their weekly plan and plot assessment dates in their Formation lesson once a week. This should be transferred onto the plan and placed up on their wall at home. The checklist booklet provides room for students to write notes and complete practise questions etc. to help prepare for exams. It is essential that boys consistently ‘chip away’ at revising subjects throughout the term.

Top students ensure that they focus in classes and strive to gain an understanding of the work from Day 1 Week 1.

I hope that students achieve their very best throughout their first term studies.

A reminder that the Year 7 Parent Information Evening will be held in the Campbell Centre on Wednesday 6 February. This is a night for parents, students do not attend.

Exceptional Learners

Challenge Program

These academic extension classes will start in Week 2.

The Maths Honours classes are once a week for Years 8-10 and Year 7 once a fortnight for Term 1. Parents/caregivers will receive an email if their son is eligible and then they need to reply via 'Tours/Excursions' on Parent Lounge.  Placements are determined on academic results and change at the start of each term.  An 'A' needs to be maintained and boys need to commit to the program.

The English Honours Program is three times a term and again based on an 'A' result and follows the same principles as Maths Honours.

The Future Problem Solving classes will also start next week, boys are encouraged to sign up in 4.4 as soon as possible.  These classes are also on a weekly basis with a team commitment.

There will be an information evening on Thursday 21 February at 5.30pm with a meet and greet followed by a 6pm start in College Hall.  This will cover the programs and provide an opportunity for discussion with program teachers.

Acting Director of Music | Mr Jan Hewerdine

Welcome to Terrace Music for 2019, both to students continuing in our program and new students who will be joining us for the first time. The year got off to a great start with our annual Music Camp, which was held last week at both Terrace and Brookfield. Under the leadership of Jack Gardiner (Music Captain) and Clancy Gundrum (Music Vice-Captain), this was a great opportunity for our Senior ensembles to bond and make great headway on repertoire for the year. By the end of the camp the groups were sounding very strong indeed, promising a great year ahead for Terrace Music. A new innovation this year at camp were two concerts that featured visiting professional groups and also featured some of our students. Our thanks to the dedicated Music staff for their work with the boys. For your forward planning, next year’s camp will take place from 20 to 24 January (TBC).

Congratulations to the Red Thunder Drumline who performed on Tuesday for the welcoming tunnel for the new Years 5 and 7 students and to the SWE and Red Thunder Drumline on their first performance of the year at College Assembly on Tuesday morning.

Year Five Classroom Music News

On Monday 4 February (Week 2) we will be handing out instruments to your sons.
In most cases, we were able to assign one of the choices nominated. However, it was not always possible to give one of the preferences. The aim is to find a balance between the need to provide a positive experience for the student; the availability of instruments; and, creating balanced ensembles. We ask that whatever instrument was assigned to your son, that they enter into the experience with an open mind. The choice of instrument is secondary to the overall journey of music making.

Lessons and Rehearsals

Music lessons, Speech and Drama lessons and all ensemble rehearsals, unless otherwise notified, commenced this Thursday in Week 1. You should have received an email notification of lesson times and ensemble involvement. If you have not done so, please contact music@terrace.qld.edu.au The ensemble rehearsal schedule is available through the Terrace App under Culture | Music.

Terrace App/Parent Lounge

A reminder that the Terrace App is being used to store and disseminate information such as the Music and Speech and Drama Handbook, the weekly rehearsal schedule, and Event Memos for performances. There will still be some information found on the College website but it will be of a more general nature.

Performance and workshop notifications are sent out as a Tour emailed via the Parent Lounge and this will be used to ascertain who will be attending performances and for roll marking. Could I ask that you respond promptly to these notifications as we use this information, among other things, to generate rolls and book transport when applicable. Please keep in mind that it is expected that all members of an ensemble participate in all performances, but we understand that from time to time there may be circumstances that prevent attendance. If you are declining a tour, could you also please inform the ensemble director and cc music@terrace.qld.edu.au

Finally, as these notices only go out to parents, could you please discuss the event with your son to ensure he has the details entered into his calendar. You and he will be able to view the Event Memo via the Terrace App. Links to the Parent Lounge will be mentioned in this Terrace News article as they become available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Music Department  music@terrace.qld.edu.au

A full list of Term 1 events is included at the end of this article and will be updated as required. This list will contain a basic outline of each event with more detailed information being sent directly to those involved via Parent Lounge.

Acting Director of Sport | Mr Tyron Mandrusiak

On behalf of the Sport Office I would like to welcome all families to another busy year of Terrace Sport.

I think it’s fair to say that our large participation numbers are second to none across all the sports offered in the GPS competition. Coordinating a sporting program this size requires a huge amount of support.  I would like to thank in advance all coaches, teachers and parents/caregivers for your support as we head into season 2019.

Students of all abilities are encouraged to compete in at least one sport. The elements of participation, fun and the pursuit of skill excellence and teamwork are the primary goals of the Sport program.

Parents/caregivers can support our Sport programs through dedicated Support Groups. Support Groups meet regularly, and all parents are most welcome to play an active role in supporting their sons and our programs. Meeting dates for these support groups are listed in the College Calendar.

Further information on Support Groups or our Sport program can be obtained by contacting the Sport Office on +617 3214 5230.

Finally, I encourage all students to pursue the sports on offer with commitment, courage, teamwork, healthy competition, integrity, fair play and good sportsmanship.

All the very best for the term ahead.

Captains’ Corner | College Captain, Oliver Seawright

As I began to write this brief update on Week 1 of 2019, there was a Terrace Year 7 student on his very first day of school, waiting for his parents to pick him up. The bell to signal the end of school had gone 20 minutes ago, but the boy was smiling because he was not waiting alone. Beside him was his Year 12 Buddy (who I later found out is the only person he knows at the school). The Year 12 student planned to catch the train home but didn't leave with his friends. Instead, he waited until the young Terracian had seen his parents arrive at the school.

That Year 7 student went home having had a successful first day at Terrace and was excited by the prospect of an 8.25am start on Wednesday morning at his home away from home for the next six years.

The first day of the year is about the students who wear the Terrace tie for the first time as well as the mixture of nervousness and excitement around Treacy Court. Tuesday saw the return to school of students in Years 5, 7, 10, 11 and 12 after what was hopefully an enjoyable and restful eight weeks of holiday. For many students, the first day at a new school can be overwhelming and stressful, but thanks to the warm welcomes from Years 11 and 12 students, the boys appeared to settle well into Terrace life. With the constant support of the Buddy program over the next few days and weeks, the Seniors hope to have established healthy relationships with all of our buddies and a good connection with the Year 5 and 7 cohorts.

Over the course of Term 1, there are many activities and co-curricular events planned as a means of bringing the new year levels together and helping form friendships amongst the boys. From the upcoming Swimming Carnival and Year 7 camps to 2019's first Gorilla Gathering, there is a multitude of events for the boys to get involved in, and begin to feel the unparalleled culture that exists at Terrace.

All in!

Terrace Performing Arts

The Terrace Performing Arts Support Group has welcomed a new committee for 2019 and I would like to thank Mrs Kirsten Carroll for her leadership of the group over the last couple of years.  This year guarantees to be a busy year in the Performing Arts space with the Junior Musical, Madagascar and two overseas Music tours (Singapore and Europe) along with a range of musical events – the Norman Clarke concert, House Choir and the Terrace Jazz Night.

Terrace is blessed to have a broad and strong cultural program and the ability to showcase these talents requires a community of support from teachers and parents alike.   The charter of the Terrace Performing Arts is to assist the Director of Culture and the Director of Music in their pursuit of excellence in music and culture.  We provide financial support through fundraising for musical and theatre equipment and tours as well as providing human resources for concerts (pre/post drinks), productions and events such as House Choir.

This coming Tuesday 5 February at 5.30pm, we are holding our first TPA meeting for the year in the Callan Centre to work through our upcoming events.  All are most welcome to attend – please don’t be shy.  If you are unable to make the meetings and would still like to contribute/volunteer (whether for an hour or a single event) please let me know as we are always on the lookout for assistance.  The TPA is a great opportunity to meet parents and involve yourself within the College as many of the events we support are held in the evening or on weekends.
