Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

This is the last edition of the Terrace News for Term 1, and I think it is fair to say that once again, we have faced a challenging term, with a delayed start for students, a period of online learning, mandatory mask wearing, flooding events and extreme weather evacuations. I thank our staff, parents, caregivers and students for how you have rallied together to negotiate the ever-changing school landscape. The Terrace Family has demonstrated admirable resilience in the face of all the challenges presented to us this term.

The Easter break will provide an opportunity for all of us to take a breath and enjoy some downtime. The College has focused on maintaining our usual routines as much as possible despite the current challenges. There will be a number of training camps and activities planned over the break. However, it is unlikely that these activities will be held at Tennyson. Further information will be provided to families by the Sports and Activities Directors involved.

Term 1 reports will be available online from Tuesday 5 April. Booking details for the Parent/Teacher Interviews will also be available following the release of the reports. These interviews will be held online on Tuesday 19 April and Wednesday 27 April.

Amidst our sometimes chaotic journey over the past weeks, it could be easy to forget the importance of the Easter season in our Catholic tradition. The death and resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday is at the core of our faith and was reinforced during our Easter Liturgy today. As we prepare to finish the season of Lent and move into Holy Week, it is timely to reflect on the importance of this time in our Church’s calendar.

Again, I take this opportunity to thank everyone for demonstrating such unity and resilience. Thank you to the many who have helped others affected by the floods, family tragedy or illness. Being a part of the Terrace Family has many aspects, but rallying to help those in need, being together and being supported truly characterises what is so special about the Terrace Family - one I am proud to be a part of.

I wish everyone a happy, safe and restful Easter break, and I look forward to a less disrupted Term 2.

Happy Easter.

Deputy Principal | Mr Damien Fall

As we close out what has been an extraordinary term, I would like to provide a few words of thanks and best wishes to all in the Terrace Family. Much has been said about the events that once again made world headlines and the tragedies that beset Brisbane in the early months of 2022. I pass my sincerest best wishes to all in our community, and I hope that our lives can return to normality for the remainder of the year.

However, rather than focusing on the negatives of Term 1, I would like to acknowledge the excellent work that has taken place at Terrace this year. Of most significance is the adoption of SPIRE as our Learning Management System. This initiative has been very well received by all in our community, which has already made a difference in our pedagogical practice. I would like to acknowledge the significant effort made by our staff to enable SPIRE to function and improve our planning and teaching methods. Sincere thanks to our staff who stuck to the task under what were, at times, trying circumstances throughout the term. I have no doubt our teachers are looking forward to a break over the Easter period. They deserve it.

I would also like to thank our parents and caregivers who walked with us on the sometimes-bumpy journey during Term 1. During recent weeks, our staffing has been stretched to its limit, but we have managed to continue delivering excellence in education. We have always enjoyed the support of our families. I expect the shortage of teachers in some teaching areas to be an ongoing issue, as it is in most schools. On behalf of all staff at Terrace, I thank our parents and caregivers for working with us as you always do, and I ask for your ongoing patience as we solve any staffing issues that arise.

A reminder that Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will occur in Weeks 1 and 2 of next term. Dr Carroll’s correspondence early next week will outline details of the two interview dates. With the departure of some teachers and several College events taking place, a small number of staff will be unavailable for some interview times. Dr Carroll’s communication will also indicate those teachers who will be unavailable.

I wish all Terrace students a restful time over the Easter break, and I hope our families have an opportunity to enjoy a break at what is the most significant time for the Catholic Church. I am looking forward to a less bumpy ride in Term 2.

Dean of Identity | Mr Terry Thompson

Pray for Ukraine

Peace is a precious gift, which must be promoted and protected … Never has the use of violence brought peace in its wake. War begets war, violence begets violence (Pope Francis)

At the beginning of Lent, on Ash Wednesday, we committed ourselves to others. As a Terrace Family, we are committed to strengthening our relationships with our House Friendship Groups and our Timor-Leste friends. As we continue on our Lenten journey - 40 days signifying when Jesus was sent to the desert by God and ending with his death on the cross on Good Friday - we are reminded in Matthew’s Gospel to practice three things during Lent – to fast, to give and to seek the Lord in prayer.

Today, we gathered in liturgy for prayer and reflection, to focus on the current events in Ukraine. While fasting and giving are significant during Lent, today staff and students focused on prayer and walking in solidarity with our friends in Ukraine.

This tragic event has shaken not only the people of Ukraine but the rest of the world. It has been a reminder to our world that peace and tolerance in our societies are something that we cannot take for granted. We need to continually seek ways to speak, advocate and be instruments of peace and tolerance.

Prayers

We pray especially for the vulnerable and marginalised communities most severely impacted by war.

We pray for those with political responsibility - may they work for peace, not war.

We pray for the countries bordering Ukraine that are caring generously for their neighbours during their time of need.

We pray for Australia, that we may make a positive contribution to peacemaking in our world.

We pray for the Australian community, that we may open our hearts to the people affected by this conflict and keep them in our prayers.

We pray for ourselves and people everywhere: help us stand shoulder to shoulder with those who suffer, raising our voices in solidarity against injustice.

Lord, we pray that as our Lenten journey brings us closer to the season of Easter, we remember that Jesus is a way, a truth and life of peace. Strengthen us to be instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us bring love. Where there is hurt, let us bring forgiveness. Where there is disharmony, let us bring unity. Amen.

I would like to wish the Terrace Family a safe and Happy Easter break.

Live Jesus in our Hearts…Forever

St Joseph…Pray for us.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

We have come to the end of Term 1, and, as is often the case, it is hard to believe that nine weeks have disappeared so quickly. To our new families, congratulations on completing your first term. I trust it has been a positive experience. With all the academic, co-curricular, religious, service, formation, social, camp and retreat activities, a huge amount occurs in the space of a term. We know busy boys are more likely to be happy, healthy and successful. We feel that their needs are being well met by the range of activities offered.

Finally, the weather is showing signs of cooling off and it is, therefore, timely to give some warning about uniforms for next term. From the beginning of Week 3, all students will be required to wear their blazers to and from the College every day. They must remain in the blazer until the 8.25am bell to start the school day. Long trousers are compulsory for all students in Years 11 and 12. Younger students are permitted to wear long trousers, but they are not compulsory. The hat remains a compulsory part of the uniform as students travel to and from the College every day. Many thanks in anticipation of your support in ensuring blazers are ready to go in Week 3.

As part of our commitment to maintaining standards, we must sweat the small stuff. It remains a priority to have high expectations regarding matters such as personal presentation and uniform. I need to be very clear in saying that students must return to school in Term 2 with a haircut that meets our expectations as outlined in the College policy. We would not expect to need to ask students to have their hair cut when they return from holidays; part of the responsibility of families is to monitor this and ensure it is attended to before school resumes. I thank all our parents and caregivers in anticipation of your assistance with this important aspect of the presentation.

As we conclude the term, I would like to extend the best wishes of the College Pastoral team to the Terrace Family. I trust that all will have the opportunity for some time to rest and refresh while recognising the sacredness of the Easter season. The Cricket, Debating, Swimming, Volleyball and Rowing seasons are behind us, and Football, Tennis, Cross Country, and Chess are ahead, but as a Catholic School, Easter is our most important season. My very best wishes to all our families at this special time. I look forward to a highly successful time during Term 2.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

As we come to the end of the examination period, it is important to take time over the holiday break to reflect upon the term. Term 1 can potentially be a difficult term for students as they start a new year level or even at a new school. It takes time for students to settle and become comfortable. Terrace prides itself on the Pastoral focus provided to students at this time to ensure that students are happy and settled.

Early next week (Tuesday 5 April), you will receive your son’s Term 1 report. The results contained within this report will provide point in time data to indicate your son’s progress. This data is simply the starting point for discussions and reflection regarding a student’s progress.

While the individual subject result is an important indicator, reflecting how the result was achieved is a much more powerful message. A strong result will reinforce a student’s work ethic or positive change to study habits. A disappointing result will highlight the need to modify existing work habits and work ethic. It is vitally important that these messages are explained and reinforced.

To support the discussion you will have with your son, Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews will be held on 19 April and 27 April. These interviews are an opportunity to reflect on the Term 1 result and work with teaching staff to develop strategies to enhance academic performance. Booking times for these interviews will be through the Parent Lounge. Further information regarding this process will be available with your son’s report.

Waterford Place | Program Leader, Mr Joshua Kersevani

As the term draws to a close, it is hard to believe students have reached the halfway mark of their Waterford journey. This term has been full of disruption and challenges. However, to survive and flourish, we need to be able to adapt and recalibrate. Our gentlemen of Waterford have certainly demonstrated this capacity as their goalposts continued to change throughout the term.

During the past week, students have focused on exam preparation. It has been pleasing to see students take to the concept of active study, as outlined by Mr Luke Gribble last week. Students have also made the most of the generous staff support outside of scheduled lessons to further their understanding of class concepts through learning alliances with their teachers. As our young men continue their transition from childhood to adulthood, we promote accountability in their decision making. Over time, and with the support of adults, this decision making will become more stable and considered.

Now that exams have passed, students will spend their final two days of the term engaged in community and formation activities. Today, students have heard from Mr Tony Parsons from National Drug Awareness. Mr Parsons spoke to our young men about the legalities of illicit and prescription drugs, the consequences of illicit drug taking as well as discussing peer pressure (how to say 'no' in a high-pressure environment) and how to make the right decisions and stand by them. Undoubtedly this message comes at an important time. Tomorrow students will participate in a Leadership Program run by our good friends from yLead. The program aims to create a paradigm shift away from the leadership badge and towards the idea of positive influence through positive choices and actions. Both programs are again focused on making good decisions.

Students will also have the opportunity to gather and participate in our rescheduled Inter-House Swimming Carnival.

As we close out the term, I remind us all of the challenge given to our Waterford men – what kind of man do you want to be? I encourage you to continue this conversation with your son. In the words of leading psychologist Steve Biddulph, A successful and happy adolescence entails hundreds of conversations about what matters, who you are and what you stand for.

On behalf of all the staff here at Waterford Place, we wish you and your families a safe and restful break. We look forward to reconnecting again in Term 2.

The end of Term 1 sees us pivot to look towards our Term 2 and 3 activities – one being GPS Chess. We are lucky to once again offer a Masterclass to our Chess students with Australian Grandmaster Mr David Smeardon. Mr Smeardon will conduct a masterclass for our Chess students who have a rating of greater than 700. He will also be holding a simul at the completion of the day, playing multiple players simultaneously. This is a great learning opportunity for our students.

Masterclass details:
Date: Monday 4 April
Time: 10.30am
Venue: Room 5.6
in the Tony White Building.

Debating

Congratulations to the Church of England Grammar School Senior A team, who are the GPS Debating Premiers for 2022 and take home the Vicki Sargent Memorial Trophy.

We are very proud of our Senior A team –Thomas Nunn-Rutledge, Thomas Musgrave, Jack Barends, Liam Cleary, Harry Walsh, who represented the College as Gentlemen of Terrace. Sincere thanks to their coaches – Mr Elliot Johnston and Mr Paddy Harten – who guided them to second place.

Thank you to our GPS coaches, who steered our teams through the finer points of Debating this season. Our families appreciate your expertise and professionalism.

With the many changes to the original QDU schedule, students must check their emails from their coach and Miss McLean to ensure that they are at the correct venue on the correct date. Students and parents can also log on to the QDU website and check the CMS for team information.

Public Speaking

Miss Clarke has contacted students regarding the various Public Speaking opportunities available. Students should check their email or contact Miss Clarke for information.

Terrace Term 1 Public Speaking Workshop + 2022 Program

Term 1 Workshop Topic: Dare to speak out.

Thank you to the gentlemen who attended the Term 1 public speaking workshop.

Here is the Terrace Public Speaking Handbook with program information.

We have brilliant team coaches and gentlemen in the program and look forward to the opportunities ahead.

In the Term 1 workshop, we shared public speaking goals and what we would like involved in the 2022 Terrace Public Speaking program. All students are welcome to join, regardless of prior public speaking experience. It is a supportive atmosphere to develop skills. The next workshop will be in Term 2. We will have a competition during the year and promote public speaking events at school and external competitions.

The 2022 Secondary Schools’ Public Speaking South East Queensland competition is coming soon. All students are invited to participate. Click here for further information regarding the 2022 Secondary Schools’ Public Speaking South East QLD Competition.

Perseverance through adversity

Dreams, if they’re any good, are always a little bit crazy (Ray Charles)

This term has presented various challenges on so many levels. In recent weeks, students have reminded me how easy it is to lose sight of what matters and is important in our lives.

Each of us has our own struggles and aspirations. Ray Charles was certainly familiar with this. Blind from the age of seven, music was not an easy road for him to pursue. Charles persevered through adversity to become one of the most important pianists of his generation. His unique blend of gospel, soul, and blues music into a signature style, was no mean feat, coupled without the gift of sight.

Learning to read music in braille and play by ear helped me develop a good memory (Ray Charles)

Charles, who learned to read music via braille, an excruciatingly difficult process, was often referred to as a musical genius, a man who understood the medium in ways most musicians only aspire to. Perhaps this is why he became the musical icon we remember him as, despite not being able to see the piano keys in front of him.

Music to me is like breathing. I don’t get tired of breathing, I don’t get tired of music (Ray Charles)

If we each take a little inspiration from Charles’ story and apply it to our own pursuits, musical or not, imagine what we can each achieve?

Holiday Workshops

Director of Sport | Mr Tony McGahan

If we have learnt anything over the last couple of years, it is that we must be prepared for change. Term 1 delivered that change, and again the Terrace Family rose to the challenge. Your efforts and commitment to your individual sports and the broader program are appreciated.

The participation rates continue to be extremely high, with over 1150 boys competing for the College in Term 1. While the weekly playing rounds for our competitive sports was not complete, our students have come away with some solid results for the 1st Teams in the Term 1 GPS sports season.

  • Cricket – 1st XI finished second
  • Rowing – 1st VIII finished fifth
  • Swimming – The Senior team achieved their best result at a GPS Championship since 2007, finishing fourth. Our Junior team’s commitment and diligence paid off with third place.
  • Volleyball – 1st VI finished fourth

This term, we farewell two long time members of Terrace Sport. Rowing Director Mr Brendan McGrath has resigned after eight years of directing the shed to move into the corporate world. The Rowing community had the opportunity to congratulate Brendan for his service at the recent end of season lunch; I add my thanks to that. Brendan has been an incredible Rowing Director; he has also been a dependable part of Terrace Sport in general. Mr Dwayne Hoy is stepping down as 1st XI Cricket Coach after 11 years. Thank you, Dwayne, for your service to Cricket. We wish both Brendan and Dwayne well.

Term 1 competition sports

Cricket

All players were provided with as many opportunities as possible to represent the College during the Cricket season. Fortunately, the Terrace Cricket program was able to complete its disrupted season, which included the Term 4 preseason program and Holiday Clinics. It has been a strong year in which over 530 students were given fantastic cricketing opportunities. Congratulations to the 3rd XI, 11C, 11D, 9C and 8C, who were undefeated, and the 11As and 8As, who won premierships.

Thanks must go to all in the program, including students, coaches, parents and caregivers and the Cricket Support Group. We are fortunate to be a part of a great community, and the community must continue to support one another. Thanks again for your participation and support of the Terrace Cricket program.

Rowing

Through the turbulent last few weeks, the 100th GPS Head of the River was held at Wyaralong Dam. This culminated in many weeks of training off trailers and at external venues while Tennyson was re-established.

There were many highs and lows throughout the regatta, with the program placing in 17 out of 25 races on the day, with the majority coming from the Year 9 and Year 10 cohorts. Congratulations to the Year 10 2nd Quad, Year 10 4th Quad, Year 10 8th Quad, Year 10 10th Quad, and Year 9 10th Quad, crowned Head of the River Champions.

Swimming

Despite the many challenges presented across the season, Terrace Swimming has finished with one of our most successful results in recent years. Our Senior team competed at the 99th GPS Swimming Championships on Thursday 10 March, at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre (Chandler) and finished in fourth position – the best result at the GPS Championships for the College since 2007. • Jack Moore – Boys 15 Years 50m Backstroke (28.99)
  • Isaac Wilson – Boys 16 Years 50m Breaststroke (32.16)

The 9th GPS Junior Carnival was held for the first time at Nudgee College on Thursday 17 March. Again, our students demonstrated just how much the diligence and commitment to their training had paid dividends, finishing in 3rd position. There were several outstanding performances on the day, with the highlight being our 12 Years 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay team (George Stewart, Max Sheppard, Gilby Lynch and Oliver Bowater) establishing a new College and GPS record in this event for the third consecutive year – an outstanding achievement by these young men.

Best wishes to our Terrace swimmers who have qualified for the Australian Age Championships being held 11– 18 April in Adelaide – we look forward to hearing more great results in the coming weeks.

A reminder to all swimmers that Swimming continues in Terms 2 and 3 for those that would like to continue through the cooler months. Sign up is available via Parent Lounge – please speak to Mr Wooldridge or the Rackley staff if you would like more information.

Volleyball

The Volleyball program concluded the season on Saturday against Toowoomba Grammar School. The day was a resounding success for Terrace, winning 19 of 21 GPS games against TGS, including a clean sweep in the Years 7, 8 and 9 age groups. The 1st VI recorded a nail biting 3-2 win in an epic game to secure a fourth place finish.

The program would like to thank all players, parents/caregivers, coaches, managers, referees, coordinators and our wonderful Parent Support Group for their efforts in an incredibly unique and challenging season. A special thank you to our Head Coach Mr Cameron Young for his tireless work ensuring all teams were well looked after despite the disruptions. Enjoy the winter sports, and we look forward to seeing everyone back in Term 4.
