Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

As we near the end of the first week of March, it is timely to remember that amongst the busyness of the school year, the successful balance between study, co-curricular, family and social time is very important.  At Terrace, there is a strong focus on participation as well as the academic journey.  Balancing these aspects of College life is challenging at times but effort to do so needs to be ongoing.  The College provides several different forums where the students are reminded of the need to have balance within their lives.  The College also provides several opportunities for supporting the student’s academic journey, including staff tutoring, study hall, Friday roll call and the provision of checklists for all subjects across the various year levels.  Working in partnership with students, staff and parents is key to establishing and maintaining the sense of balance that is needed.  If you have concerns regarding this aspect of your son’s journey at Terrace, I encourage you to contact the relevant staff.

This Friday night, Terrace swimmers will be involved in the GPS Swimming Championships at Chandler.  Our swimmers have been working very hard and will be very competitive tomorrow.  My thanks to the many coaches and parents who have assisted with the program this year and I wish all our swimmers the very best on Friday.

I thank the many parents who continue to drive carefully around the streets near school.   The safety of the many boys crossing streets, both in the morning and the afternoon is paramount, and your support in keeping them safe is critical. Unfortunately, there are still a small number of drivers parking across our neighbour’s driveways, stopping in the street for drop off/pick up and doing U-turns in Rogers Street.  Some of our neighbours are becoming increasingly frustrated with these parking behaviours and have indicated they have contacted Council, who will be monitoring and booking drivers in breach of traffic laws.  Please assist by being aware of and following all applicable traffic rules. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Finally this week, I draw your attention to two presentations being hosted by the College over the coming weeks - Game Quitters and Sleep Connection. These events will form part of a suite of presentations for both students and parents/caregivers examining issues that impact on young people.  I encourage your involvement in these and other presentations that the College continues to organise.  Details of both these presentations may be found on the College App.

Have a great week.
God Bless,

Dr Michael Carroll
College Principal

Deputy Principal | Mr Damien Fall

Sincere thanks to the large number of parents who completed surveys following our parent information evenings at the commencement of the year. We received a considerable amount of feedback, much of which will be used as we attempt to review and refine these evenings. We are blessed to have the level of parent engagement we enjoy, and we want such evenings to be the best possible use of parent time and a worthwhile experience. The College Leadership Team has had the opportunity to view and discuss the survey data and we have taken some valuable advice, so once again, thank you for your attendance at the evenings and for your feedback.

This Sunday is International Women’s Day and it calls to mind the important role that female staff play in our schools. Every interaction a student has with an adult is an opportunity for the formation of the young man. Our boys need regular interaction with and the influence of strong women, and we are fortunate that our students are taught, led, cared for and, when necessary, challenged by the wonderful women on our teaching and non-teaching staff. It is equally important that adult males in the school role-model respectful, appropriate masculinity.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data in the graph below clearly indicates the important role female teachers play in schools nation-wide. It is fair to say that education in Australia employs a high proportion of female teaching staff.

Single-sex schools invariably have a teacher gender balance that sees a higher proportion of their staff of the same gender as the students. At Terrace, we have approximately 45% female and 55% male teachers, which is comparable to many boys’ schools and allows students a wide variety of formative interactions with staff. Boys’ schools like ours still have a way to go in terms of women in senior leadership, but there has been clear progress since the early days when the College’s teaching staff were virtually all male. The Terrace Gentlemen are fortunate to enjoy the influence of our dedicated staff and we especially thank the women who have chosen a vocation in education. Our young men need you.

The thoughts and prayers of the Terrace Family are with Mr Will Marshall, our Head of Faculty: Languages, at a very sad time. Far too young, Will’s brother Michael sadly lost his battle with cancer late last week, leaving behind a young family. May perpetual light shine on Michael and may he rest in peace. It is sometimes easy to forget what is most important in life and tragedies such as this hopefully help us to remember what is most important to us. In the Lenten season, we pray for the wisdom to appreciate our good fortune and many gifts.

Best wishes to all in the Terrace Family.

Dean of Studies | Mr Mason Hellyer

At Tuesday’s College Assembly, we celebrated the Swimming team and wished them well for the GPS Championships at Chandler on Friday night. I used the swim team to highlight the following concept to students:

Success = consistent effort x time

The swimmers do not expect to turn up on Friday night, having done little to no preparation and expect to swim a personal best. They have been training consistently for months, working closely with their coaches, and have maintained focus and motivation. For our swimmers, because they are prepared, they can be confident that they will be able to produce their best performance at the championships.

Our Year 12 students are similarly placed. On Wednesday, they started their first exam block, with a number of Internal Assessment 1 (IA1) and diagnostic exams taking place over six days. This exam block examines work completed from Term 4 Year 11 up to this point. Our Senior students have also been preparing consistently for months and have been working closely with their teachers and are focused on the task ahead. They can be confident that they will be able to produce their best for each exam.

Academic Success = consistent effort x time

For our Years 5-11 students, there is still time for exam preparation. However, while exams are on the horizon, there are assignments due over the next two weeks. There must be a focus on both assignment completion and exam preparation. The best place to start exam preparation is via the checklist booklet to keep track of the consistent effort in the lead up to exams.

During this period of the term when assignments are submitted, it is timely to highlight the College processes for assignment submission and requests for assignment submissions. These processes can be found in the Student Diary (p129 for Years 5-9 and p131 for Years 10-12). The 10-12 policy can also be found on Parent Lounge.

Additionally, extensions for assignments can only be granted by the Dean of Studies, Head of Faculty or Subject Coordinator. If you have a concern regarding adherence to an assignment due date, please be in contact with your teacher initially. However, permission for an extension will need to be sought from a Subject Coordinator.

All the best for the week ahead.

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Cuddihy

Students today face challenges that did not exist when we were at school in terms of what is available to them online and within an instant. It is a powerful force. Many parents would have attended the Game Quitters parent seminar this week facilitated by Cam Adair. Cam also addressed our Years 5,6, 7 and 9 cohorts on Wednesday about a range of topics related to gaming, internet addiction and social media.

Cam has been connecting with our community for a number of years now, and we feel confident that he is a significant person in trying to get these essential messages across to our students about the online world and the pitfalls that adolescents can fall into. While many interesting concepts were presented on the evening, some of the key messages put forward by Cam include;

  • Prevention is better than cure. Do not take for granted that your son manages his gaming. Keep employing proactive measures to keep gaming in check.
  • Be conscious of managing your tech. addictions and the possible double standards you are modelling to your children.
  • Stay firm on game free days and be aware of binge cycles on weekends and holidays.
  • Understand what loot boxes are within games and the link they have to gambling and increasing the dopamine reward in players.
  • Keep searching for new pro-social activities for your children.
  • Rebuild the family unit and keep investing in sacred family time such as dinners and family activities.

Tomorrow night sees the first of our championship events for the year with the GPS Swimming at Chandler. It is timely that we remind our community that the dress code for supporting all co-curricular events is academic dress with the white shirt. Our Years 7, 10 and 12 students will be supporting the swimmers on this occasion. Next weekend, we have the Head of the River at Wyaralong Dam. Students have been asked to sign up at Student Services if they are attending.

Assistant Dean of Identity | Mr Chris Zammit

The ashes – a symbol of the fragility of our earth

As we enter the second week of Lent, we continue to be reminded of the commitment made on Ash Wednesday in the words heard when receiving the ashes: Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Throughout these six weeks in the lead up to Easter, we are called to be the best we can be, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a time of reflection and a chance to focus on the things that form us as a faith community.

The ashes distributed during last week’s liturgies are a reminder of our mortality and the sorrow of sin that comes with our humanity. During the forty days in the desert, Jesus himself was tempted by sin and asked to show his power and strength through divine works. Instead, through his humanity, he chose humility – one of the three pillars of the Terrace Gentleman. We too are asked to be humble in our actions with each other and in the choices we make during this time of sacrifice.

The symbol of the ashes is particularly prominent as we reach the end of the most devastating of Summers, with historic loss of land, animal species and human life due to bushfires right across this beautiful country. The ashes on the foreheads of our Terrace Family came from the burnt lands in the surrounding areas of Maroon Dam, a special place in the journey of faith and formation of the Terrace student. They are a reminder of the fragility of all life and a call to do all we can to protect our environment.

Pope Francis describes sin as our wilful ignorance of the holiness of our planet, and for anything we do to hurt or diminish the planet in any way. Francis is unequivocal. It is sinful to diminish the planet in any way.

He reiterates in his encyclical Laudato Si – Care for our Common Home

We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it. We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of ethics, goodness, faith and honesty. It is time to acknowledge that light-hearted superficiality has done us no good. When the foundations of social life are corroded, what ensues are battles over conflicting interests, new forms of violence and brutality, and obstacles to the growth of a genuine culture of care for the environment.

Listening to the news this week, one might think that we are approaching the end times; from a global pandemic to a struggling economy and the fear and chaos that follows. However, Lent provides us with hope that as a Christian community, the actions we each take and the choices we make each day in the journey from sin to love, can unite us in faith and make real change in our world.

Dean of Waterford | Mr Luke Gribble

As Week 7 approaches, one of the key messages I will deliver to the boys at Waterford Place is that they will need to make a quick transition from an assignment focus to an exam focus. With drafts and assignments due over the following week and exams not far away, this transition needs to be well planned.

There is excellent evidence to support the correlation between an early start to the revision process and positive outcomes from upcoming exams. If the boys start the revision process too late and then try to cram for exams, this becomes quite stressful and often produces frustration, anxiety and disappointing results.

At the start of the term, every Year 10 boy was given a Checklist booklet that highlights what will be assessed and this allows them to work through every learning goal across each of the subjects being examined. The next few weeks will be a busy period for the Year 10s, but we are only a few weeks away from the Easter break, so they need to maintain the momentum.

One area of concern currently at Waterford is the obvious fatigue levels amongst many boys in the cohort. I observe the boy’s engagement in the Edmund Rice Theatre during College Assembly as well as at other presentations and get feedback from teachers in classrooms. There are far too many Year 10 boys falling asleep during the school day. Many boys are not getting enough sleep to be able to be alert and functioning at their best at school. I am aware that many boys have early starts for co-curricular activities, but this should not come at the expense of being able to function through the day. Many of the boys that are struggling to stay awake had no training in the morning.

This Friday night, the Year 10 boys will support the GPS Swimming team at Chandler. The boys will have plenty to cheer for with some elite talent in the pool. I thank Samuel Allen, Conor Foxlee,Felix Lewis and Xavier Stiles for volunteering to lead the Years 5 and 6 Terrace boys through the Junior program in the morning and then backing up for the Senior event well into the night. Next week brings another championship event with the culmination of the Rowing season at the Head of the River.

Best wishes to all our rowers.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Terrace Chess

Terrace Chess had another strong showing at the Somerville House High School Team Chess Competition this month.  The competition, which ran over two Friday nights, was well attended and saw our teams take on some of the schools we will compete against at GPS level later in the year.  Our Premier team - Yang Zhang (Year 12), Jonathan Hsu (Year 7), Jack Giufre (Year 10), Alex Ong (Yea r11) and Joshua Alfredson (Year 9) - came second in the top division, narrowly missing out on first by half a point.  Alex Ong (Year 11) and Justin Jeyarajah (Year 12) picked up medals for great individual performances throughout the competition.  Congratulations to our students who received awards as well as to all the boys who represented Terrace at the event.  Terrace Chess has had a great start to 2020!

School of Rock

Terrace students will have their levies added to their Term 2 College fees.  Please ensure you have the most up to date version of the schedule as it is constantly being updated and refined. Rehearsals are well underway with our students learning new moves and actions every day.  This behind the scenes vision from our 2016 production of Pippin shows a little of the action and passion from our students.

Support Group meetings

Thank you to these parent groups who work tirelessly in the background to aid our programs.  If you would like to be involved, please contact Mrs Nicole Hoffmann (TPAChair@terrace.qld.edu.au ) or Ms Cate Clifford (DSGChair@terrace.qld.edu.au) .

Staying in touch

To keep in touch with all things Cultural, we would suggest you download the Terrace App and follow us on Twitter (@GTCulture) and Instagram (terrace_gtculture) to ensure you don’t miss a thing.   If you have any photographs or video that you would to share, please tag us.

Director of Music | Mr Jan Hewerdine

Congratulations to the Fanfare team under the direction of Mr Brad Esbsensen, for their performance at the Swimming Presentation Assembly on Tuesday.

A huge call out to our musicians and singers who performed so ably at last Thursday’s Chamber Concert in the Edmund Rice Theatre. The standard was uniformly high, especially considering how early in the year this performance comes up.

Apple and Grape Festival

This Saturday sees musicians drawn from the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Black Concert Band and the Red Thunder Drumline performing as a marching band at Stanthorpe, for the Apple and Grape Festival. Along with the Marching Band rehearsals in the term break (Tuesday and Wednesday 14/15 April) this event provides an opportunity to galvanise our collective marching skills.

If any students are leaving the program, parents/caregivers need to notify the Music department two weeks prior to the end of term (Thursday 26 March).

OneNote

Music at Terrace uses a Microsoft Office platform called OneNote. This software provides us the ability to keep attendance rolls and diary notes for instrumental plus Speech and Drama lessons. The students are provided a link via email (sent 31 January).
Students need to click on this link to access their OneNote file. This also allows parents the chance to see what students are working on.

Instrument theft

Theft of instruments is a common problem, either from bag racks or unsecured lockers.

  • If you play either flute, clarinet or oboe, please keep your instrument in your school bag
  • If you play trumpet, trombone, euphonium, alto/tenor saxophone, bassoon, violin, viola or cello, please store these instruments at the start of the day in room MU2, which is located in the Music Centre. The shelving is clearly marked.
  • Please refrain from using your classroom bag racks (and walkways) to store your instruments. The chances of the instrument being stolen are high.
  • Additionally, we ask that you do not leave your instrument in the walkways of the Music Centre.

Terrace App

A reminder that the Terrace App is used to store and disseminate information such as the Music and Speech and Drama handbooks, the weekly rehearsal schedule and event memos for performances. There will still be some information found on the College website, but it will be of a more general nature.

Performance and workshop notifications are emailed via Parent Lounge and will be used to ascertain who will be attending performances and for roll marking. Could I ask that you respond promptly to these notifications as we use this information, among other things, to generate rolls and book transport (when applicable).

Please keep in mind that it is expected that all members of an ensemble participate in all performances, but we understand that from time to time there may be circumstances that prevent attendance. If you are declining a performance, could you also please inform the ensemble director and cc music@terrace.qld.edu.au

Finally, as these notices only go out to parents, could you please discuss the event with your son to ensure that he has the details entered in his calendar. You and he will be able to view the Event Memo via the Terrace App. Links to Parent Lounge will be mentioned in this Terrace News article as they become available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Music Department  music@terrace.qld.edu.au

A full list of each term’s events are included at the end of this article and will be updated as required. This list will contain a basic outline of each event with more detailed information being sent directly to those involved via the Parent Lounge.

Round 5

Round 5 saw the majority of the program playing games in the supplementary draw, with 18 games played against Brisbane State High School. The supplementary draw is a vital part of the GPS competition, providing valuable and quality competitive fixtures each week for teams that don’t match up against other opposition. While these games fall outside of the GPS competition, they offer players an opportunity to play against an older age group team, or a side from a higher division, something that will fast track skill development and allow teams to challenge themselves against stronger opposition.

The weekend’s supplementary games raised the team’s level of performance to match the opposition’s standard. Particular praise must be given to the 7 Gold team who defeated the BBC 7Ds, while the 5Ds and 6Ds also recorded victories against higher division sides. There were two hat tricks over the weekend with Sam Daugalis claiming one in the 4th XIs win over BBC and Harrison Klatt (6C) going one better and taking a double hat trick, four wickets in four balls.

In the fixtures against BSHS, Terrace was able to record their fourth consecutive winning day of the 2020 season, winning 62% of games against the traditionally strong State High program. The 2nd XI recorded a convincing victory in their fixture with Callum Walsh claiming impressive figures of 6/18, as did the 11As, thanks largely to a century from batsman Jack Manly. The 10Cs continued their undefeated season defeating BSHS by 97 runs.  Once again, the B teams were impressive, only dropping one game across all age groups. State High were able to claim victory in a low scoring 1st XI fixture that sees the team facing a must win game this weekend against Churchie to stay in touch with the competition leaders.

Each week the program recognises the individual efforts of players that take wickets and score runs. On Saturday, the difference in many of the matches were the small but meaningful efforts that often go unsung such as a diving save, hard running between wickets or excellent support from the sidelines. These team-first plays are what the Terrace Cricket culture is built on, and we congratulate those boys who meet this standard every week.

In Round 6, Terrace plays Anglican Church Grammar School in the majority of games in the annual Pink Stumps round, a GPS initiative which aims to support the McGrath Foundation.

Terrace had a very successful weekend hosting Brisbane State High School for Round 4 of the GPS season. Please see below for details.

The Terrace 1st VI hosted a big BSHS team. The boys continued to impress as they put on another thrilling performance. The 1st VI demonstrated their athleticism and game awareness with a variety of offensive options, which resulted in a 3-0 win.
The program overall had 15 wins and two losses.

The team of the week were the 11Bs who have continued their four game winning streak. They put on a clinical display, highlighting their offensive capabilities. The 11Bs dismantled their opponents 2-0.

We look forward to travelling to Anglican Church Grammar School next weekend for Round 5 of the competition.  Please remember to check your notifications on the Terrace App for all information surrounding training times and game days.

TLG Welcome Mass - Parents and Sons

On Tuesday 3 March TLG Welcome Mass was held in the Chapel of the Holy Family. For the many mothers, sons and grandparents who attend I would like to say 'thank you' for sharing in this extraordinary morning. I know you all went away with either goose bumps and or a tear in the eye after mass. I would like to thank Fr Gerard Hall and all those behind the scenes who made the mass possible. The Terrace Choir under the direction of Mrs Bernadette Debattista were accompanied by Mr Brad Esbenson on trumpet and this year the Waterford String Quartet also joined us with Ms Amy Phillips.

The message of the day was to be more loving, gentle, forgiving and thoughtful in our actions, reminding us that our actions are what connects us all.

Terrace Cookbook and Tea Towel

For those parents new to the school, you may not be aware that Terrace has a great practical cookbook. This is a book every Terrace gentleman should not leave home without. The recipes are gathered from present and past mothers and include a huge array of family favourites. It has become a staple in many of our homes, not just for the practical aspects to what is offered inside, but also because it is truly a beautiful book. We currently have a special running on the cookbooks to mark the commencement of the year. Cookbooks are $25 each, with a current bundle offer of $30 for a cookbook and a Terrace Red and Black tea towel. Please email Kirsten Carroll on dpklcarroll@gmail.com if you would like to purchase one. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. I have a set for each of my three boys for when they move out of home.

Family Directory

There are still spaces throughout the electronic Parent Directory on the Parent Lounge.  I am sending out another reminder to parents to sign on. Please log onto the Parent Lounge, update your details and share if you are happy for others in your various year levels to contact you if the need arises (e.g. accidental bag swap, lifts to training, invitations etc). This is also crucial for our year level coordinators. If you have any queries on how to update your details on the Family Directory on the Parent Lounge, again, please email Mrs Sam Mills samtonymills@gmail.com.
