Principal’s Message | Dr Michael Carroll

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

This week the Year 12 students sat the QCS test.  It was a demanding two days for the students, but as expected they were magnificent with their focus and application across both test days.  The College will be given preliminary results in early November.  My congratulations to the Year 12 students and to the many parents who contributed and assisted with the lunch on each day.  The boys were certainly well fed.

Last week the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) finals were conducted.  This year Terrace had two teams in the finals – 11.2 and 9.1.  Both teams have had excellent seasons to reach the finals.  The 11.2 team were defeated by a very strong BGS team while the 9.1 team defeated their BGS opposition and were crowned State Champions.  This placed the Terrace Debating program third in the state.  My congratulations to all debaters, their coaches, the Debating Support Group and the Debating Coordinator Mr Andrew Stormonth, on what has been an excellent season.

Last Friday Terrace went ‘Green for Conor’. Students and staff wore green clothing for the day to raise funds to support Conor Tweedy.  My thanks to all involved. I am very pleased to inform the Terrace Family that a total of $5100 was raised and this money has been donated to Conor’s appeal. Well done Terrace.

Tomorrow the TLG is hosting their ‘Terralicious Fashion Parade’ at City Hall.  I am sure that it will be a great day and fun will be had by all.  My thanks to the organising committee and the many helpers involved.  I am sure there will be plenty of photos posted on the College Facebook page over the coming days.

This weekend Mr Chris Ryan, Mr Mason Hellyer, Mrs Louise Cosgrove, Mr Andrew Stormonth and I will travel to Melbourne to be part of the EREA Congress.  Representatives from EREA schools and Edmund Rice educators from across the world will gather to reflect on ‘Charting New Horizons’, and so begin to develop the next phase of EREA.  Over the coming editions of the Terrace News, I will share some of my reflections from the Congress.

This Saturday will be the last home game of the GPS Rugby and Basketball seasons.  I wish all players, particularly our Year 12 players, the very best on their last game at Tennyson and the Terradome.

The exam season is rapidly approaching, and all students should be well into revision mode.  The next two weeks are critical in ensuring all the hard work has been worthwhile. Good luck.

Finally this week, I wish our Year 10 students all the best with their Immersion Programs. Students are in all parts of the world on different Immersions and on behalf of the Terrace Family, I wish them all a safe and enjoyable experience.

Have a great week.

God Bless.

Queensland Core Skills Test

On Tuesday and Wednesday our Senior students completed the two day testing of the Queensland Core Skills test. This test provides scaling parameters of final Senior results between both schools and subjects within schools. The results are not released until the Year 12 students have completed their year.

Our Seniors are to be commended on the effort and commitment made across these two days. Their focus and motivation to do well were outstanding and as I have quoted to the boys throughout the year, they deserve to do well.

Year 9

A reminder to Year 9 students that every Friday morning at 7.30am in the GT125 theatre, Mr Coman conducts Friday Roll Call sessions. This is a very efficient way of making sure you understand the learning required in your core subjects. I strongly encourage boys to attend these sessions.

NAPLAN results 2018

Due to an error in data transmission, the rankings of school NAPLAN results in the Courier Mail last week contained errors.

The correct rankings for St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace are:

Exams

Next week is the start of exams for many students. Many boys have worked very hard this term and these exams will be recognition and reward for this commitment.

Below are some strategies for successful outcomes in exams:

The night before the exam
  • Make sure you have checked and packed the required equipment.
  • Go over rules, dates or any other rote learning that is required.
  • Mentally list off every topic and key points in the topics that you have covered in the exam subject during the term.
  • Make sure you get adequate sleep the night before the exam.
On the day of the exam
  • Make sure you have a good breakfast.
  • On arrival at school do not get caught up in ‘panic conversation’ that could undermine your confidence.
  • Plan your strategy for time allocation prior to the exam.
  • Be positive and confident! If you have worked hard during the term this is the time when you deserve to be rewarded. Go into the exam feeling strong and confident – do not doubt yourself.
  • During perusal read the paper carefully. Use a highlighter to remind or make yourself aware of key points.
  • During the exam, be aware of the time. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to answer a question when you know how to do it!
  • Work hard for the whole duration of the exam. Check, check and re-check your work until it is time to hand in your paper.
Remember the 3 Ps
Prepare
Practice
Persevere

Dean of Students | Mr Damien Fall

Our Senior leaders chose the motto Shoulder to Shoulder as their theme for 2018 and subsequently challenged the entire school to bring this motto to life through their actions every day.  The motto is a call for all students to treat each other as brothers who support each other through thick and thin.  In recent days, there have been some wonderful highlights that clearly reflect the commitment so many boys have made to make this a reality.  Last Friday’s Green Day for Conor was a huge success, not only in raising funds.  The photo of Conor and a swarm of students in green at the spinal unit after school on Friday will remain a favourite snap from 2018.

The first Tuesday and Wednesday of September are well known among Year 12 students state-wide as meaning one thing – QCS.  It was inspiring to see the Seniors Shoulder to Shoulder against the common ‘foe’ over these two days.  They worked at capacity for each other and they should be proud of what they have achieved.  They could not have done any more to ensure that they worked together for the benefit of all.  Their attention now turns to the fast-approaching exam block as the year quickly disappears.  Well done Senior students.

We were overwhelmed with feedback after last Thursday’s Orientation evening for our 2019 Year 5 students; not about the facilities, but about the enormous positive impact of the Year 10 boys who have assumed the role of buddy.  Schools are relationship-based organisations and, while every relationship may not always work perfectly, people are the most important assets we have.  The concept of Shoulder to Shoulder has nothing to do with buildings and everything to do with people.  We look forward to our Year 11 students stepping up this Thursday evening as buddies for the 2019 Year 7 students.  We are grateful for the efforts of the older boys in helping to make the Terrace journey as smooth as possible for their young buddies.

This Saturday is the last opportunity in the GPS season for our young men to stand Shoulder to Shoulder at Tennyson as we host IGS in our final home fixture.  As always, an outward symbol of commitment to the College is to wear the uniform proudly.  A quick reminder that all boys staying to support the 1st XV are required to wear their full College uniform, including the white shirt.  It will be a nice way to close out Week 8 before we commence exams next week.

Food Bank Drive

A big thank you to all Years 5 and 6 families for their support of the Food Bank Drive this year. It was another incredible response in support of Food Bank’s goal of An Australia without Hunger. Close to 1500 items were once again donated.

Science Fair

A reminder to parents of Years 5 and 6 that our annual Science Fair will take place in the Campbell Centre on Thursday 14 September (final day of term). The morning will commence at 9am and conclude at 10.30am. All parents and family are most welcome.

Gerard Butler Shield

Our Year 6 students took part in the annual Touch Football match for the Gerard Butler Shield at Tennyson this week. Gerard was a student here at Terrace who lost his battle with illness as a Year 7 student in 1994. A rugby match is played in his memory and the boys once again played hard and fair. It had previously been a Year 7 contest, but we are now in our fourth year with Year 6 students as the leaders of our primary school. Congratulations to all classes on the spirit in which the games were played. Congratulations to the class winners for 2018 - Year 6 Red.

Young Terracian awards

Last week in our assembly, we gave Young Terracian awards to students in Years 5 and 6 who have been setting fine examples, creating positive habits and being a Terrace Gentleman around the College.

5 Blue – Lucas O’Kane and Harry Dalton 5 Gold – Rafe Johnson and Hugh Barrett 5 Red – Lachlan Cooper and Joe Becconsall 5 White – Oliver Nasser and Brandon Taylor 5 Yellow – James Wallace and Will Devine 6 Blue – Tom Coogan and Alex Richards 6 Green – On Camp 6 Red – Max Chan and Leon Sweeney 6 White – Adrian Chan and Elliott Quinn

In Years 5 and 6, we also recognise students each term who display qualities fitting of our founder through our RICE Award. Our recipients this week were, Willem CassadyFelix CampainAngus Wall and Orlando Tessarolo

With exam calendars in circulation, revision and time planning become important. Questions each student should be addressing:

  • Are my notes in together for each subject?
  • Have I visited the term outline and check list so that I am aware of the topics that will be covered?

The keys to success are, plan, check, revise and check again.

Director of Culture | Mr Matt Cocking

Music – National Selection

The following students have been selected to attend the Australian Honours Ensemble Program.  This program gives students the opportunity to work with their peers from across Australia to develop and extend their musical skills.
Congratulations to:

  • Scott Moran (Year 11) – Voice Tenor
  • Liam O’Connell (Year 11) – Voice Tenor
  • Alexander O’Meally (Year 12) – Voice Tenor

GPS Chess

This year has been one of our most successful seasons of GPS Chess in recent years.  Congratulations to all our students.  Currently, our Premier Team is ranked second on the ladder. With our penultimate round this week at home against Ipswich Grammar, we would encourage fellow Terracians to come and support our Chess team.

Debating

The Dethlefs-McMillan Trophy has been established to provide a platform for Terrace and All Hallows’ debaters to discuss social issues. This ties into the charism of both schools with the goal of encouraging students to gain a greater understanding and perspective of why social justice is so important. This year the debate was held at All Hallows’ School with a large turnout for this inaugural event. Terrace won the debate, represented by Alex Sullivan, Declan Hackett, Scott Moran and Darcy Border. The boys did an excellent job with kind feedback received from many attendees. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Youth Advocacy Centre and Murphy Schmidt Partners who kindly donated the trophy and have contributed to charities that are supported by both schools. Many thanks also to Ms Amanda Bell, coordinator of Debating at All Hallows’ School, who organised the event this year. We look forward to our next Dethlefs-McMillan debate which will be held at the start of the 2019 school year!

Theatresports

Thank you to Ms Emma Hatchett, Mrs Nicole Kirsch, Mr David Giles and Old Boy Mr Henry Bretz who coached and coordinated our Terrace Theatresports teams this year. Well done to the two Senior teams for making the state semi finals.  All our teams have now finished their seasons and we have once again set the groundwork for a great 2019 competition.

 Orientation Evenings

Last week the College hosted the Year 5 Orientation. A big thank you to the Red Concert Band, the Callan Red String Ensemble and the Terrace Youth Choir who performed as part of this event.

This afternoon the Black Concert Band and the Callan Black String Ensemble and will be performing on the Treacy House verandah for Year 7 Orientation. In addition, Vocal Soloists will be singing in the Chapel.

Celebration of Excellence

From this week, new members of the SWE started rehearsing in readiness for the Celebration of Excellence on 2 November. The musical component of this event brings together all wind, brass, percussion, orchestral strings and choristers together into the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

All musicians in Years 5 and 6 classroom Music, The Red and Black Concert Bands, Callan Red and Black Strings have all been asked to commit to memory the music to Carmina Burana. We ask families to encourage the boys to work on this at home. The results will be well worth the effort when we combine these musicians with the Celebration of Excellence Orchestra and Choir.

Young Conservatorium and Talkin' Jazz

Applications for the 2019 Young Conservatorium programs have now opened. All applications must be submitted online through their website, to browse through on what is on offer, plus enrolment information, please click here.

Director of Sport | Mr Damian Wright

With last weekend’s bye round, an opportunity was provided for quite a number of the boys and their families to refresh and recover from a busy term so far from their Rugby and Basketball commitments. Boys caught back up on their studies and completed their assignments and some sense of normality returned to family life. I hope everyone who had some down time enjoyed it.

I must admit that I am a massive fan of Jonathon Thurston and I watched closely all the fanfare and congratulations that were sent his way in the light of his final game of Rugby League career. “JT” as he is more readily known is a stand out in many regards to many people – his persona /smile /personality crosses many bridges and he is a man, that to me and many more, personifies everything that is good about sport.

Perhaps the two of the greatest traits that stand out about JT is the man’s humility and level of sportsmanship. How refreshing is to see such a humble sportsperson. Someone who has achieved so much in his career and someone who has not allowed the accolades to change who he is. His authenticity is palpable and real. He is relatable because of his ordinariness and yet revered for his skill levels and achievements.

When addressing the young men of the Year 5 intake of 2019, I spoke of always portraying the best of sportsmanship at all times and to hold themselves up when faced with challenges. To all the boys who will wear the red and black, not only for the next two weeks, but in the future in any activity, the message has always been, and will be continually repeated, that to always play in the best of sportsmanship and to hold yourself, your colours and your school above reproach. Regardless of the result always be the better person and display admirable qualities at all times.

Sporting role models are often called into question. Perhaps if other sport stars modelled themselves on someone like JT a little more, then a lot of the unsavoury antics that are presented to our young men would not be present.

Last week, the Met North Track and Field trials were on at the University of Queensland and a number of Terrace athletes made it through to the State Championships to be held later in the year. It was a great representation with 16 boys getting through to states – the most for quite some time with some truly remarkable performances. Personal bests and top three placings were a plenty, but it was most pleasing to see the number of boys identifying with the sport and embracing the great opportunity to be coached by a stand out Track and Field coach in Ms Tatiana Grigorieva. I can only give one piece of advice – focus on your training and listen to your head coach. Track and Field will be run at the end of Week 4 Term 4. Get to training and give yourself the best opportunity to succeed. As always stated when it comes to the team events at championships – every place and every point counts – making a step up the results table is dependent upon every athlete – not the star athletes but every student’s performance – it is a true team event.

Good luck to all the boys who will compete in the final Track and Field meet this weekend on the Friday night before the holiday period and also to the boys competing against IGS this weekend.

The Weekly Wrap

Track and Field

Last week was a very busy week for our Track and Field boys with 29 students competing at Metropolitan North Championships and 60 competing at the BSHS Invitational Meet on Friday night.

We had some outstanding performances at the Metropolitan North Championships with 15 of our boys being selected to represent the Region and the State Titles later in the year.

Congratulations to these boys who were selected to be a part of the Metropolitan North Team:

Malachi Neill, Max Van Balen, Peter Ulman, Trevine Loos, Hudson Seefeld, Mali Dorante, Oliver Nash, Joe Maranta, Griffin Kelly, Oliver Seawright, Daniel Di Giandomenico, Keegan Sullivan, Xavier Watson, Declan Madden and Josh Watt

On Friday night we also had a number of great performances from the boys including: Archie Baynton (Shot Put and Discus); Tasman Bunkum (Shot Put); Max Phillips (Hurdles); Bernie King (Shot Put); Peter Ullman (100m and Long Jump); Dylan Ryan (Hurdles); Blake Porteous (Hurdles); Oliver Casey-Ryan (100m); Max van Balen (200m); Aaron Mathew (200m); Nicolai Wightman (200m); and Declan Madden (400m).

This week, Friday 7 September, BBC will be hosting the Invitational Meet at QSAC (4.30-8.45pm approx.) and we would like to encourage all of our athletes to attend. Terrace Ladies Group

Terralicious ‘18

There is much excitement amongst the ladies of the Terrace Community for Terralicious ‘18, which is on tomorrow in City Hall, starting at 11.30am. The Parade starts at 12pm sharp, so please be sure to get there in plenty of time to find your table before the show starts.

The online sales of the raffle tickets for the amazing prizes have now closed but you can buy tickets at the event tomorrow for $25. The black raffle gives you entry to the Hyundai hatch back prize, and the red raffle is to the gorgeous McKinney’s South Sea Pearl necklace. The other prizes will be drawn once the two main prizes have been drawn. All winners will receive either the voucher on the day, or a certificate advising to collect their prize from the College’s reception next week. Anyone not at the event who wins a prize will be notified by phone or email.

We are most grateful to our major sponsors, Hyundai and McKinney's Jewellers, for their ongoing support of Terrace functions and fundraising efforts.

I am also very excited to advise that Brisbane City Council has contributed $10 000 towards our fundraising efforts which will go directly to Conor Tweedy. We are most grateful to the City Council for this. Remember that our proceeds of the day will go towards Conor’s rehabilitation and care, as well as improvements to the Wellbeing Centre. The more tickets we sell, the more support we can offer Conor, and of course the more tickets you buy, the better chances on winning a fabulous prize. Good news all around.

Tennyson canteen

This weekend we host Ipswich Grammar at Tennyson, with a number of supplementary games with BBC and Nudgee. Please sign on where you can to assist in the canteen and the BBQ using these links - BBQ link and Canteen link. This week we are asking Years 5 and 6 parents to please fill the volunteer spots for Saturday. Home bake is of course very welcome and most appreciated.

This Saturday is Margo Galloway’s last day on the job as Canteen Assistant. She is off to pursue her career in Speech Pathology now she is about to graduate. She has been a terrific team member in the canteen for the past four years and we have relied heavily on her. Please say a fond farewell to Margo if you get to the canteen on Saturday. We are excited to welcome our new Canteen Assistant, Clover McGahon, who will be at the canteen on Saturday receiving some valuable training from Margo before her departure. Please help Clover feel welcome if you see her.

Orientation Evenings

Last Thursday we welcomed incoming Year 5 boys for 2018 at their Orientation Evening and tonight we welcome the incoming Year 7 boys.   It is a real joy to see the excitement of these boys and their families. Our boys in Years 10 and 11 were clearly very proud to finally be amongst the big boys of the College and take on the responsibility of being a buddy to a younger boy looking for their guidance. Thank you to the ladies who came along and assisted us to welcome the families with refreshments and smiling faces.

QCS lunches

Our Senior boys undergoing QCS were given important refuelling thanks to the delicious lunches that were provided for them by mothers in their year group. There were bakers, cooks, donations and hands-on workers. It takes many hands indeed to pull something like the QCS lunches together – and an amazing team did just that for the boys. I know they would have been very grateful for your efforts. Thank you to all the families who helped make this happen, especially the Year 12 Coordinators: Suzie Gallagher, Gen Waldie and Nicole Hoffmann.

TLG meeting

Monday morning of Week 10, 17 September, is the end of term TLG Meeting. It is to be held in the Founders’ Room at 7.30am with breakfast and coffee and tea. Please come along to hear about the happenings of this term and what’s coming up in Term 4. The TLG meeting is a great forum for any other matters that parents might like to talk over, so if there is something that you feel would be good to discuss, please come along.

Care and concern

We continue to keep Conor and the Tweedy family in our thoughts and all look for some way we can help. With the meal roster being full until October, we can still contribute towards the fund that has been set up to assist in his rehabilitation and care https://conortweedy.com/donate... . Thank you to Dr Carroll for his updates on Conor’s progress, and to the Tweedy’s for their twitter updates. It is truly heart warming to see our caring community rally together and support this wonderful family at this time.

History of the Terrace Ladies Group

I have received some wonderful information on past TLG Executive members with a view to keeping a record of this in the school’s Archives. This is going to be a wonderful legacy, one that acknowledges some of the big milestones in the school’s development that our mothers have been involved in. If you can assist in providing names of friends or family members who have been part of the TLG in the past, please email Leisa Low on bllow@bigpond.com. We have the past 10 years sorted back to 2008, but before then there are many gaps in our timeline. Anecdotal stories would be terrific to receive as well.

TLG Correspondence

If you are not on our mailing list but would like to be, please email our Secretary, Rachel McGahon, on terrace_ladies@outlook.com. Please also ensure that you save this email address into your contacts as it may find its way to Junk Mail.
