Dear Members of the Terrace Family,

Last Friday I attended the blessing and unveiling of the College Honour Board for the Malayan Emergency, Korean and Vietnam Wars. A number of Old Boys and their families attended the event in College Hall, as well as the Year 11 Modern History students.  It was a very special gathering as we acknowledged the sacrifice the Terrace Old Boys had made in these conflicts, including three men who lost their lives.  The Honour Board is a magnificent board and was very generously donated by Dr Dominic Katter (GT 86 - 90). My special thanks to Dominic for this generous gift.  I also wish to acknowledge and congratulate the College Archivist, Ms Bianca Anderson, for her efforts in leading this project.  It has been many years in the planning and came to fruition last week.  Congratulations to Bianca on this achievement and for the wonderful display developed in the College Museum that highlights the Vietnam War.

We are nearing the end of Week 8 and the Semester 1 exams commence next Wednesday.  The exam timetables have been published and students have this information.  It is important that a clear revision plan is established and that as exams begin, students are well prepared.  I have commented previously, but will emphasise again, the importance of students being rested prior to an exam.   A good night’s sleep, using revision notes along with the checklist, are all critical to success.  A tired student will not perform at his peak in an exam, particularly as the exam week progresses.

For those of you who have been at school during the last couple of weeks, you will have noticed the building program is progressing well.  Over the next week or so the slab for the ground floor will be poured and this will allow further construction on the upper levels to begin.  This will certainly allow us to see some significant progress.  I again thank parents and students for their cooperation in accommodating the disruption.  Please be careful when driving around the streets near the College as the work intensifies.

The concept of sustainability is a theme I have been sharing in recent editions of the Terrace News.  An additional initiative being adopted throughout the College is paper recycling.  It would be fair to say than an enormous amount of waste paper is generated at Terrace.  Paper recycling bins have been placed throughout the College in an attempt to collect this paper and present it for recycling.  This project is only in its early stages and the amount of paper being collected is relatively small. However, it is occurring and making some difference at our local level.

Finally this week, I congratulate all of the musicians who performed in the Norman Clarke Concert last Sunday and the Winter Concert held on the previous Wednesday.  The quality of the performances at both events was excellent and reflects the quality of the Music program at Terrace.  Well done to all involved.  I also wish to thank our long-time supporter of the Music program at Terrace, Mr Norm Clarke.  Norm is extraordinarily generous with his support of music at Terrace and on behalf of all within the Terrace Family I thank Norm very much.

School Officer’s Day

Our non-teaching staff play a key role in the culture and achievements of the Terrace community. Their expertise, commitment and generosity support the efficiency, productivity and pastoral climate of the school for students, staff, parents and Old Boys alike. Their roles extend through every domain of school life, supporting and enhancing our systems and work. School Officers contribute significantly to the faith, academic, pastoral, co-curricular, financial, commercial and organisational domains of Terrace and play an essential part in our community realising our holistic goals in forming the Terrace Gentleman. Our School Officers work with our teaching staff in partnership in realising the goal of forming young men of faith and learning in knowledge, humility and wisdom.

On Wednesday 13 June, we join school communities throughout Queensland in celebrating School Officer's Day in recognising the professional contributions and achievements of our non-teaching staff across their various roles. The staff community will gather for a special morning tea to mark this time, acknowledge our staff and thank them. 

Middle Leadership appraisals

Our appraisal process which supports the professional growth of our Heads of Faculty, House Deans and Program Leaders Years 5 to 10 hasd now concluded. A highlight of this process is spending time with each individual reflecting on their professional journey and the data collected from a wide range of professional peers. It is fair to say that we are blessed by the quality of both our non-teaching and teaching staff and equally so by our committed and talented team of Middle Leaders. It has been a pleasure to work with them in recent months as we have facilitated this process. I thank all of the staff involved who contributed to the process and our group of Middle Leaders who have engaged professionally in each phase of the appraisal and review.

Professor Geoff Masters, current CEO of the Australian Council for Educational Reresearch, made the statement that the one purpose of assessment is “to establish and understand where learners are in an aspect of their learning at the time of the assessment.”

As a school we are at that point in the term where students are ‘formally’ assessed in order to ascertain where they are at this point in time with their learning, and to also report back to students and parents. Years 10-12 start their exams next week and the remainder of the year groups in Week 10. However, the information collected from the exam period is also used to inform and shape teaching and learning into the future. The data is used to track student performance, ascertain whether students are working to capacity and to highlight individual, subject and cohort strengths and weaknesses.

One of the most powerful outcomes of this reporting period is the Parent/Student/Teacher interviews early in Term 3. This is an opportunity to conference and to generate strategies to assist your son’s learning. Information regarding these interviews will be sent home in the coming weeks.

During this period of assessment, students will be under stress. I have reinforced, especially with the Senior students, that to feel nervous or anxious prior to an exam is normal. It is largely a physiological response and it should be recognised that it is okay to have some anxiousness. Dealing with this reaction is vitally important. Deep breathing, task focus and breaking tasks into smaller more manageable parts are all strategies that have been explained to the boys.

Another important aspect in dealing with exam block is to normalise your son's routine as much as possible, make sure he continues to exercise, is following a healthy diet and has enough sleep, especially the night before an exam. 

Exams are an opportunity to demonstrate what you know and to be rewarded for the hard work that has occurred through the term. All the best to all students in their exams.

This has been our last full week of classes before we move into exams, commencing on Wednesday next week.  This means we are well and truly at the business end of the term and the application and work ethic of all of our students should reflect a determination to perform to their capacity.  This fits with our call for each student to ‘be the best I can be’.  Holidays are approaching, but now is the time for hard work; holidays are best enjoyed when we know we have earned them.  I wish all of our young men the very best in the lead up to exams.

I am a huge fan of State of Origin football, so I very much enjoy this time of year and all of the excitement that surrounds the three games.  It is fascinating to watch the enthusiasm of the fans as they support their team in an almost tribal fashion.  The passion of the fans is a reminder to me of the fine line between being enthusiastic and being inappropriate.  I am sure most of us have sat at sporting fixtures and been annoyed or offended by the behaviour of someone nearby and wishing they would stop.  In these moments, the person in question is usually far more focused on seeking attention for themselves than on actually supporting their team.  

Unfortunately, human nature means that sometimes we can get carried away by the moment and behave in a  fashion that is different from how we would normally act.  No humans are better at getting carried away at times than adolescent boys.  One of our roles as a school is to support parents in teaching our young men about not crossing the line by behaving in a manner that is inappropriate.  This could be in the classroom, schoolyard, on the field, or when supporting.  I always say that our students are great, but not perfect, and that they will lower their standards if we allow them to do so.  As we approach the end of term, it can be tempting for students to lower their standards or to move into holiday mode before the hard work is over.  They regularly hear our words of encouragement about finishing as strongly as possible.

Work or Vocation?

How is a teacher in a Catholic school more than just a ‘teacher’? I am continually energised by my responsibilities with forming all members of our Terrace Family with respect to answering this question, including our teachers themselves. At the Week 8 juncture of the school term, with the marking and reporting piling up, it is with trepidation that I mention ‘teaching’ and ‘vocation’ in the same breath! However, a teacher in a Catholic school must never lose sight of the wonderful gift that their vocation is to the world, particularly our Terrace Family. Despite the urge to refrain from exploring this concept further during this busy time for teachers, amid the haste and noise is sometimes the best time to embrace perspective.

Early morning tutoring, House assemblies, Tennyson training, Tutor Group. These are all key settings whereby our teachers go beyond the call of duty. This seemingly extra work is not work at all. It is responding to the call of a Catholic school, enabling young people to develop wholly, ‘to have life and have it to the full’ (John 10:10). It is a vocation. In further exploring this notion, I came across the reflection below by Parker Palmer who is a renowned writer, speaker and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. As I read these words I was struck with the concept of vocation not centering on ‘doing’, rather, centering on ‘being’:

Vocation does not come from wilfulness. It comes from listening. . . That insight is hidden in the word vocation itself, which is rooted in the Latin for “voice.” Vocation does not mean a goal I pursue. It means a calling that I hear. . . I must listen for the truths and values at the heart of my own identity.

I understand vocation . . . not as a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just beyond my reach but accepting the treasure of true self I already possess. Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfil the original selfhood given me at birth by God.

One possible sign that something is your vocation is - would you do it for free, even if there is no reward or social payoff?

Whatever may be your job, profession or career, if it resonates with the essence of a ‘vocation’ then you are very lucky. You are listening and responding to your inner-voice, your truer-self. In this setting you are ‘giving life and giving it to the full’, just as our teachers do each and every day within our faith and learning community. 

Our Terrace Family is blessed with teachers who honour their vocation as a teacher with giving life to our Catholic community, particularly with giving life to our Terracians. May we never take for granted the extra effort, time and care our teachers give to our community without asking anything in return. Another sign of vocation in action.

Krispy Kreme Donut Fundraiser

Next Tuesday 12 June and Wednesday 13 June the Terrace ERA for Change group will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts to raise funds forThe Asylum Circle, a community organisation dedicated to assisting newly arrived people seeking asylum in Australia. The Asylum Circle works collaboratively with key agencies to enable better service delivery and provide support for projects around Queensland which improve the quality of life for newly arrived migrants. Terrace has proudly linked with this organisation as part of our aim to support an inclusive and welcoming community in the lead up to Refugee Week.

This week marks the conclusion of our Blanket Drive and the response has been overwhelming. It was an amazing display of generosity once again by those associated. Many thanks to the students of Years 5 and 6 along with their families. As these mornings are a bit cooler, your support will be cherished by those receiving the blankets.

Week 8 at Terrace signals exam time, putting together a big term of work and finishing strongly. Revision booklets are in circulation with assignments coming to an end.

For our Year 5 students, this will be your second exam block at Terrace and we are sure that you will be better for the experience from last term - knowing the time that is required during each exam, and being aware that the revision and preparation before an exam is valuable to giving yourself the best chance at success. It is important as with everything that you attempt, to believe in your ability and to give yourself every chance by being active with your exam to the end of the allotted time.

At our Years 5 and 6 assembly last Friday morning, students from each class were once again rewarded for their exceptional efforts. This recognition demonstrated some great themes, such as being prepared, displaying initiative and developing engagement through each lesson. Congratulations to the following students:

This Tuesday morning, parents of 5 Green are most welcome to Tuesday morning Mass in the Chapel. This will be followed in Week 10 by 5 Blue and 5 Yellow combining together to celebrate the Eucharist. Mass will begin at 7.45am. Year 5 Red on Tuesday presented a reflective Eucharist celebrating the theme of being the best that we can be. 

As we finish off our Term 2 activities, we thank the adults who have helped us whether it be through sport, culture or in the classroom, your support is much appreciated and goes a long way. 

As always, each Friday morning, there is tutoring available for Years 5 and 6 students in the Treacy Centre. 

Theatresports

Congratulations to our two Senior teams who have progressed to the quarter finals of the Youth Theatresports Competition.  The first quarter final will be on Tuesday 31 July in the Edmund Rice Theatre.  More information will be communicated when it is received from the Theatresports organisers.

Commiserations to our Junior teams who were unsuccessful this year. “Thank you” to Ms Kirsch and Mr Giles for their leadership of these teams. 

Music to the Fore

Well done to the 400 musicians who performed at their respective concerts last week. The standard of the Norman Clarke Concert on Sunday was outstanding, with some great musical moments and solos performed by our students. For our 2018 Seniors, this was the last performance at this event for them and we know it will forever remain a memory.  We hope to see them back in the audience next year.

Last Sunday the premier ensembles performed at the Norman Clarke Concert. This important calendar event, which is held in Augustine Hall at Villanova College, was held in the presence of the Extra Curricular Music Program's benefactor Mr Norman Clarke, the College Principal Dr Michael Carroll and families. Many thanks to all participants, guests and the TPA who have made this prestigious event such a success. 

As we approach the end of term, could I please ask that students keep an eye on their lesson timetables and notify their Music/Speech and Drama teachers in advance of any absences related to class assessment. Most of our teachers are employed on a casual basis with teaching portfolios spread across multiple schools. Early notification of such absences will assist them in making the most of their time and ensuring your sons’ lessons are kept up to date. Whilst we have access to assessment calendars, some assessments are not always notified through this medium. We rely on students to inform us of potential clashes. Parental support in this area is appreciated.

To discontinue lessons, please email music@terrace.qld.edu.au at least two full weeks prior to the end of term (tomorrow Friday 8 June). Notification after this time will incur a full term’s fee for the following term.

As events are approved and posted to the Parent Lounge, you will be sent an email advising the name of the event, including the Event Memo, to check and you will be required to give a response regarding attendance. Congratulations

Congratulations to Saxon Crozier (Year 10) and Hugh Fidler (Year 11) who have been selected in the Queensland Under 16 AFL team.  The boys will be playing in a National competition this month.  Good luck to both the boys.

Two Rounds To Go

Term 2 activities are winding down, with two scheduled rounds to complete the Football and Tennis programs. A reminder to all boys that their commitment needs to be for the full season and easy options and excuses are not viable reasons when missing training and game time. 

This weekend Terrace travel to Ipswich and the final round will witness the last home game of the season for both activities. Please do not miss training due to poor time management of your studies or social activities.

Week 9 Assembly

A reminder to all boys that have represented Queensland or Australia in any activity over Term 1 and Term 2, that at the upcoming assembly on Tuesday you will be recognised by the school community. If you have not done so already, please register your name and activity at the Sport Office.

Holiday Camps and Trials 

Please keep a close eye out for holiday camps, trials and clinics that will be occurring over the upcoming June/July holidays. There is always something on to keep you engaged. These clinics and trials form part of your selection process for upcoming Term 3 activities.

Tennis Wrap

Round 7 of GPS Tennis for Terrace included matches against Brisbane Boys' College, Brisbane Grammar School and the annual Terrace Doubles championships. The ‘Bye’ Round was anything but a bye as the program was busy with tennis experiences right across the year levels. The matches against BBC and BGS were again highly competitive and provided brilliant match play opportunities. We have seen definite improvement in our players from the previous encounters and that is a great result. 

Thank you to the Terrace Tennis fraternity who came out and supported the championships. It was a brilliant day, full of fun and highly competitive matches. Having such a day in Round 7 of the competition was perfect - a little reminder about the reason one plays the game. It was a fantastic social day, which allowed for opportunities that wouldn’t normally occur. Congratulations to all the winners, runner ups and to all boys who entered and a big thank you to the families who came along and made this day a great success.

Play of the Day for the Year 5 boys against BGS was Harry De Sousa and Lucas O’Kane’s singles performance, with both taking revenge on the Grammar opponent this week with dominating performances, utilising coach feedback and the theme from group training very effectively. 

The Team of the Day was 5F for their supportive atmosphere, great communication in their doubles pairs and a great attitude on court towards their opponents and off court patiently waiting for their matches.

The Year 6 matches were also hotly contested with the Match of the Day involving Will Monckton. Grammar started the match playing a high standard of tennis, getting an early break and getting up 5-2. Although down in the match, Will saved countless short duces, fighting for every point and ending the match on a high winning 6-5. 

The Doubles Pair of the Day were Max Van Balen and Xavier Ryan. Both boys showed very high ability in the match using crossing, faking and I formation techniques throughout the match. Taking full advantage of the net, both boys were able to finish the point with both accuracy and finesse.

This week our Year 10s braved a cold winter morning to take on a strong BBC team for the second time this season in a bye match. The 10As looked to improve on their previous performance against BBC and fought hard to put pressure on the BBC 10A team. Going into the singles the boys rallied hard for each point, creating quite a spectacle for everyone watching.  The 10Bs had a fantastic day, showing real improvement thanks to all the hard work in training and clinched crucial doubles and singles sets to come out of the day with a win. The 10Cs started strongly with the doubles, showing off some impressive I formation but the BBC boys proved too good in the singles. Overall all the boys had a fun morning and enjoyed playing BBC as it was an opportunity to show their improvement from the season. 

In the Open matches against BBC, Charlie Tracey played very well and managed to clinch a 7-6 victory in the number one singles, while Nick McGill and Lachlan Marshall played well going down 6-3 in the first doubles against BBC's number one pair and managed to edge a 7-5 victory in their second doubles.

This week the program moves in to Round 8 of the competition against Ipswich Grammar School (IGS). IGS have two home venues and they include the courts at their playing fields at IGS Tennis Centre, Pearse Drive, Brassall and George Adler Tennis Centre, Ernest Street, One Mile. 

Please make sure you go to the right venue. We also have supplementary matches to add to our home venues of Ambi, Coops and Victoria Park. Terrace Tennis will be well represented around the Brisbane district yet again.

Some important information regarding the program as we move towards the final round of the season. The teams that are scheduled to play in Toowoomba are:  Years 5A and B, 6A and B, 7A, B, C, D and 8A, B, C, D teams.  Please make travel arrangements. 
We wish all boys representing the Terrace Tennis program the best of luck for Round 8.

Rugby Wrap

Season 2018 will once again see large numbers of boys wearing the red and black stripes. Many thanks to all those families who took the time to register. To ensure the season gets off to a smooth start please take time to read through the below checklist.

Clothing and Equipment

• Terrace jerseys, shorts and socks will need to be purchased before the end of term as we play NC in a trial on the Saturday before returning to school.
• Mouthguard (a fitted mouth-guard from a dentist is strongly recommended). 

Holiday Clinic

• Thursday 12 and Friday 13 of July at Tennyson at the below times: Please note there is no need to register as it’s an expectation that all boys attend. Only boys not attending are required to inform tyronmandrusiak@terrace.qld.edu.au

TERM 3 TENNYSON TRAINING SCHEDULE

A bus will depart Gregory Terrace at 3.15pm sharp travelling to Tennyson with training commencing at 4pm. Training will finish at 5.30pm with a bus returning to Terrace at approx. 6.15pm. Parents are welcome to collect their sons from Tennyson.

As we approach the end of Term 2, what originally felt like it was an eternity away is definitely starting to become well within sight. I remember my first day of Year 5, Mr Chapman referred to us as the Seniors of 2018 - a year that seemed well into the distant future.  

Now seven and a bit years later, the Year 12s are beginning to spend their last few months together as a cohort. With this the case, I can’t help but ponder as to what legacy our year will leave. If I am honest, I originally thought our success would be measured by premierships won and academic success in the classroom. I don’t know if being a Senior has brought a new dimension to my thinking but I can certainly assure you that my idea of success has changed considerably. 
 
I have seen success this year when I have witnessed the younger primary students staying around to support the 1sts fixtures. I have seen success when I was joined by Year 7 students in the Chapel on a Tuesday morning. I know when I leave the College in a few months, I will undoubtedly remain closely linked and I am comforted by the fact that the future leaders of the school will carry on the same practices and traditions that have been set in place over the past.  This school has been built from the stories and traditions over the last 143 years, 2018 is simply one small part of that story.

TLG Meeting

On Monday 18 June at 7.30am, the end of term TLG meeting is to take place in the Founders' Room. We will be going over the events of the term, funding matters, initiatives coming up and any other updates of note. All are welcome. We will have coffee and tea and delicious breakfast items. Please come along if you can manage it. It is a great opportunity to find out what’s going on as well as bring up topics you’d like to discuss. We aim to have the formalities over by 8.15am so we can enjoy some time together and not hold any one up who needs to get on with their day.
