Captains' Corner | Max Van Balen, College Vice Captain
As my Terrace journey draws to a close, it’s hard to believe that eight amazing years have passed. It seemed like only yesterday it was 2017, and I was walking through the front gates for the very first time.
Having an older brother already at the school, I had a bit of an idea of what Terrace would be like. But, like most other kids, I had a glorified understanding of the sporting opportunities, the 142-year history of the 18,000 men that went before us, and, obviously, the rivalry of Terrace v Nudgee. Little did I know, this place would go on to mean much more than just sport, books, lessons and Inter-House rivalries. Instead, Terrace would become a second home.
Terrace has given me a truly special opportunity over the past eight years – not just through education but also through spiritual growth and important rites of passage. Being a part of the College community has played an essential role in shaping my identity and helping me discover my values and the person I aspire to be in the 'real' world.
From English classes to Formation lessons in GT125 and handball games in Duhig Place and Immersions, I have learned more and more about myself every single day and found out what makes Max…Max. I hope that your son’s journey at Terrace will be similar. I encourage all boys to recognise their moments at this school, even if they seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Each day at Terrace is special and is at the forefront of what makes you…you.
At the start of this year, Tom White mentioned wanting the 2024 Senior cohort to be seen as the kind grade. In my opinion, this statement holds. Boys, anything can happen in life, but my advice is always to be kind. Have empathy and show care, and I promise you will find a great deal of fulfilment and joy in your life.
Reflecting on my years at Terrace, I am so happy to have gained so much. From a greater sense of who I am to the lifelong mates I have made along the way and to being College Vice Captain for 2024, every moment has been a privilege that I do not take for granted.
I would like to thank my parents for sending me to Terrace. Without them, this journey would not have been possible.
Finally, thank you Terrace…for the most incredible eight years.
Forever bleeding the red and black.
